Jerry Nadler calls Trump ‘a dictator’ during Senate impeachment trial

.

New York Rep. Jerry Nadler called President Trump a “dictator” during the fourth day of the Senate impeachment trial.

“He is a dictator. This must not stand,” said the Democratic House impeachment manager. “That is another reason he must be removed from office.”

Nadler, 72, argued that the president seeks to be “all-powerful,” asserting no president has ignored congressional demands or subpoenas like he has. He concluded by arguing that not impeaching Trump would endanger the ability of Congress to check the power of the presidency. “He is the first and only president ever to declare himself unaccountable and to ignore subpoenas backed by the Constitution’s impeachment power.”

Democrats in the House of Representatives filed two charges of impeachment against Trump, one for obstruction of Congress and the other for abuse of power. No Republican in the House voted to send the charges of impeachment to the Senate. Democrats accuse Trump of abusing his authority by pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate his political rival Joe Biden during a July 2019 phone call.

Trump has repeatedly slammed the Democrats over these accusations, claiming his call with the foreign leader was “perfect.”
