After 11 months, the investigation into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign has failed to find anything incriminating against the president. Even some Democrats have acknowledged there is nothing there.

But as we saw during last week’s hearing with fired FBI Director James Comey, Senate Democrats kept asking questions about obstruction of justice. That was the signal that the Left moved the goal posts and replaced the original cause of the investigation with a potentially criminal offense.

Late Wednesday, The Washington Post surprised President Trump with this birthday present: “Special Counsel Is Investigating Trump For Possible Obstruction Of Justice.”

One can only speculate on how frustrated the president must be. Thursday morning, President Trump tweeted, “They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phony story. Nice.”

The pattern that has existed since the beginning of the Trump administration continued with the publication of this story. It was obviously leaked by people within the Justice Department, if not members of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team.

We know this because the Post reports that the five people who leaked did so “on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.”

This is yet another obvious attempt to hurt the president and, I would argue, prevent the president from implementing his agenda. The only obstruction I see is the Left’s obstruction of Trump’s agenda.

On a stage in New York, they are killing a Trump-like Caesar with dozens of stabs of a dagger. In Washington, leftists in the deep state are killing Trump’s agenda with dozens of leaks. And when he fights back, they accuse him of obstruction of justice.

Several senators pointed out to James Comey the various leaks that came out of his investigation. Comey conceded that a New York Times story with a very damning headline about “multiple Russian campaign contacts” was “dead wrong.” He also conceded that he was a source of at least one leak to The New York Times.

Yet, as Sen. Marco Rubio noted, “The only thing that’s never been leaked is the fact that the president was not personally under investigation.”

We know that Comey told the president three times that he was not under investigation. We know that the president asked him to “please announce that so the cloud could be lifted.” For whatever reason, Comey refused.

Think about that. The former FBI Director Comey was perfectly happy to let an innocent man get smeared by the media, to let false stories impugning his character hang out there. I suspect this gross sense of injustice is what led President Trump to fire Comey.

Trump Goes to Hospital

President Trump had planned to enjoy a quiet celebration of his birthday with family Wednesday night. Instead, he went to the hospital to visit Rep. Steve Scalise and his family.

The president noted that Rep. Scalise, who has undergone three surgeries, was “in some trouble,” but expressed hope that he would recover quickly and that his sacrifice might bring “some unity to our long-divided country.”

24 Hours Later

Twenty-four hours later, I am not only more cognizant that the congressmen dodged a bullet but that America dodged a bullet.

Had Rep. Scalise gotten up Wednesday morning and for whatever reason not gone to the practice, America would have witnessed the worst political violence in decades. It was Scalise’s security team that prevented a massacre.

Had Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner not been there protecting Scalise, we would be burying a dozen Republican congressmen. The blow to the body politic and the possibility of any return to normalcy would have been buried with them.

It was nice to see that Democrats invited their Republican colleagues out for a drink Wednesday night. It is good that the congressional baseball game will take place last evening, raising money for good causes. But at the end of the day, it’s not a baseball game or a drink together that will solve the problem.

The problem is that the Left is committed to identity politics and to demonizing conservatives.

Conservative Christians are compared to terrorists, labeled the “American Taliban.” Multiple Democrat officials have repeatedly said that if Republicans reform or repeal Obamacare, people will die.

When Donald Trump withdrew from an absurd climate agreement, Tom Steyer, the Left’s biggest donor, said Trump had committed a “traitorous act of war.” John Kerry accused Trump of making children sick.

This “rule or ruin” impulse runs deep within the progressive movement.

Have people already forgotten that dozens of Democrats boycotted President Trump’s inauguration, refusing to acknowledge the process by which we peacefully transfer power in this country?

Has it already been forgotten that the Left hired professional protestors to disrupt Trump rallies, causing fights in order to create the false narrative that Trump supporters were violent Nazis?

We have commented before on the word the Left chose to define its approach to the administration — “resistance.” That is not a name associated with American politics, but the choice was no accident.

The Resistance was the name given to those who fought the Nazis in occupied Europe. The progressive Left today thinks Trump is Hitler. The resistance engaged in sabotage. That is what the leakers are doing. The resistance went out and shot people. That is what James Hodgkinson did Wednesday.

Until the leaders of the Left start condemning the growing extremism in their movement and end the demonization of conservatives, Christians, pro-lifers and entrepreneurs, Wednesday’s violence may be only the first taste of a very bitter cup.
