[Jesus said] “Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one’? So they are no longer two but one. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder.” —Matthew 19:4-6

Jesus was referring to Genesis Chapters 1 & 2, which also tell the couple to be fruitful and multiply. Thus, this concept of marriage is actually a Judeo-Christian concept. And yet, this lame-duck Congress has decided to pass legislation that would not only redefine marriage but that also threatens religious freedom. It repeals the Defense of Marriage Act signed into law by President Bill Clinton and requires states to recognize marriages enacted in any other states, including same-sex marriages or polygamy. One has to wonder about the commitment any of these legislators have to their faiths since, according to Pew Research, 89% of members of Congress identify with a particular faith or religion. 86.5% identify as Christian or Jewish. Remarkably, considering the anti-religious, anti-life, and anti-family legislations passed in recent years, over 30% identify as Catholic. You would think that such a group would have some understanding of God’s plan and would endeavor to facilitate it. And yet, here we have another policy being instituted that will undermine the family and society.

Some, including President Joe Biden, are trying to present the concept that “love is love.” However, in the sense of faith, love is looking out for the good of others. If you are truly looking out for the good of others, then you try to keep them from harm. And if you are a person of faith, you understand that sin is harmful. In the three main religions represented by members of Congress, homosexual acts are sinful. This is NOT a hateful position; it is a loving position. Just as a pro-life policy looking to save the lives of both the mother and the child is a position of love for both, as well as society, since abortion harms the social fabric of a nation.

Led by the “party of science,” this administration continues to deny biology (when I went to school, biology was a science subject), virology (now we are “learning” that masks are useless against COVID — although many studies previous to the “pandemic” showed this), and physics (such as the energy grid and what drives it), among others. Our politicians and elites continue to insist that there are more than two sexes, that gender is fluid, that abortion is not killing a human being (although most abortionists will admit that it is), that transgender-affirmation drugs and operations are reversible, and homosexual relations are normal (even though a homosexual couple, by itself, cannot procreate).

Consequently, as a nation, we are sinking into moral decrepitude. We are destroying the family, the basic unit of society. We decry the violence occurring around the nation, acknowledging that one of the problems is the decline of fatherhood, yet do nothing to restore true manhood (not macho-hood) in our society. Deep inside we know that we are heading in the wrong direction. Almost three-quarters of the population in recent surveys says that. Some cannot point to a particular point or issue that is the problem, but we all know there’s something wrong. We have this deep sense of knowledge because, as the Vatican II document “Gaudium et Spes” tells us: “In the depths of his conscience, man detects a law which he does not impose upon himself, but which holds him to obedience. Always summoning him to love good and avoid evil, the voice of conscience when necessary speaks to his heart: do this, shun that. For man has in his heart a law written by God; to obey it is the very dignity of man; according to it he will be judged.”

We ignore our consciences and try to numb them but cannot avoid the consequences of doing so. As Fr. Robert Spitzer, Ph.D, tells us: “We have compromised and even numbed our consciences and have allowed our desire for autonomous freedom to eclipse our adherence to objective moral norms that call us to the highest levels of justice, charity, committed love, and the common good. The result, as noted above, has been a steady decline, not only in religious commitment and moral/ethical commitment, but also in emotional health, family stability, and social harmony marked by significantly increased rates of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, familial tensions, homicides, and suicides.”

We are like the woman in the Bible suffering from hemorrhages for 12 years, who went to several physicians who took all her money, but still she only got worse. She could only be cured by touching Jesus. And that’s the lesson for us today. Society can only be cured by turning to God.
