Madisen Hallberg, a Portland State University graduate, returned to campus to record her performance of the national anthem, which she was not able to sing at graduation because the university was closed. In her solo performance, she was joined by a stranger who heard her singing. That was professional opera singer Emmanuel Henreid.

Of the resulting duet, Henreid said, “It heals and connects,” adding, “It is the same instrument with the same amount of love, joy, healing, and peace, and the way that we use that gift is empowering.” He further noted, “When you collaborate with someone … the most important thing you can do is listen to them. … That applies to all of life. Make sure you listen louder than you speak.”
