40th Earth Day Birthday
· Thursday, April 22, 2010
"By exclusive property, the productions of the earth and the means of subsistence are secured and preserved, as well as multiplied. What belongs to no one is wasted by every one. What belongs to one man in particular is the object of his economy and care." --James Wilson

It's that time of year again -- that time when the northern hemisphere will be warming, as it has for millions of years, except during ice ages.
Since most of the world's industrial capacity and economic wealth is located north of the equator, this means that the now-perennial onset of global warming hysteria is about to sprout into full bloom.
On 20 April 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) founded "Earth Day" in order to launch an annual "teach in" about conservation and environmental concerns.
Of course, conservation is not a bad word -- it even shares the same root word as "conservative." Indeed, our family makes every effort to use energy and resources wisely. The "waste not, want not" principle is good economic practice.
However, the Left's motives for "Earth Day" don't stop at educating folks about conservation and environmental preservation. Those objectives provide cover for a much more sinister purpose -- using ecological concern to justify all manner of government regulation and intervention.
It's no small irony that Nelson founded "Earth Day" on the centenary of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin's birthday, as it was the impetus for creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
Nelson modeled his anti-capitalist protests after anti-Vietnam War demonstrations of that era, and the so-called "environmental movement" he helped spawn has devolved from a pack of unwashed adolescent peaceniks and malcontents into a slick, influential and well funded cadre of Lefty politicos. (This would be the same movement that protested against nuclear energy, which yields no carbon dioxide as a byproduct of energy production.)
Nelson's cadre has managed, by way of the EPA, to implement an enormous hidden tax burden on the American people -- more than a trillion dollars last year -- in the form of runaway environmental regulations, which surreptitiously increase the prices of products and services.
The grand potentate of the modern envirofascist movement is ignoble laureate Albert Arnold Gore, the man whose global warming histrionics and globe-trotting "green technology" promotion have likely made him the world's first "carbon billionaire."
Gore and his bishopric of eco-theologists have amassed a large and growing cult of earth-worshiping Gorons, lemming-like adherents to his teachings on the end times ahead.
Gore and his socialist ilk use this cultish devotion to create a central authority over industrial production in the West through mechanisms like the Orwellian Kyoto Treaty.
It must be noted, though, that when Earth Day was gaining popularity back in the 1970s, there was growing concern that another ice age was on the horizon.
Comrade Lenin Cleanses the Earth of FilthToday, the Gorons contend that the earth is heating up, and global warming is their ruse for insisting that transnational governing authorities, a global EPA if you will, must be established to control the global economy.
Christopher Horner, Senior Fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, aptly describes Gore as "green on the outside, red to the core," noting that his environmental concerns are a thinly veiled subterfuge for his socialist agenda.
Earth's climate is changing, of course. It always has, and it always will. Mean global temperatures might, in fact, have trended upward, even though many climatologists are now suggesting that the planet might be in a 10- to 30-year cooling trend.
However, Gore and company have twisted the facts to fit their agenda. Witness the recent "Climategate" e-mail scandal at the University of East Anglia, one of the world's most influential (some would say nefarious) climate-change research units. Were global warming really "settled science," its proponents wouldn't need to fudge the numbers or conspire to keep conflicting research out of peer-reviewed journals.
Commenting on the misuse of science to support political agendas, Harvard's Dr. Malcolm Ross concludes of such folly, "Freeze or fry, the problem is always industrial capitalism, and the solution is always international socialism."
Make no mistake; those who are attempting to enact global mandates are advancing, first and foremost, socialist economic agendas under the guise of concern for the global climate. The implication for liberty, in those few pockets of the world where it still exists, is ominous.
Gore's left-hand man, Barack Hussein Obama, has managed in the last month, to gain control of 17 percent of the U.S. economy (health care) in addition to the 15 percent of the economy already fully under control of the central government.
Now that hotter temperatures are in the seasonal forecast, prepare for efforts by Obama and Gore to supplant the remaining 68 percent of the economy by way of renewed hyperbole about global warming.
In March, some group of politicos on the White House Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force issued this report: "Climate-change impacts are pervasive, wide-ranging and affect the core systems of our society: transportation, ecosystems, agriculture, business, infrastructure, water and energy, among others... Climate change already is affecting the ability of federal agencies to fulfill their missions."
That would be the remaining 68 percent of the economy not yet fully nationalized.
In a 40th anniversary Earth Day dispatch from Vice Prevaricator Joe Biden, (BF-D) (subject line "Ramping Up for Earth Day"), he announced the redistribution of "$452 million in Recovery Act 'Retrofit Ramp-Up' awards."
Speaking to a group of his sycophants, Biden said, "I wonder what sometimes our constituents think when we come up with these names: The 'Retrofit Ramp-Up.'"
While I do not exactly consider myself a "constituent" of the Obama administration, I can tell you what I think of the "Retrofit Ramp-Up": Exactly what you are thinking if you are a Patriot taxpayer.
Perhaps the Ramp-Up will be as successful as the myriad of other such boondoggles.
For example, according to The Washington Times, in March "the Government Accountability Office [GAO] released a report on a $300 million Department of Energy program designed to promote commercial products that boast fashionable 'green' credentials. A team of GAO investigators with an uncharacteristically fine sense of humor submitted 20 bogus products to the department and walked away with Energy Star certification for 15 of them, including a gasoline-powered alarm clock."
The Times' editor concluded, "GAO deserves credit for illuminating the careless attitude that sets in when the greens start spending other people's money. After all, when it's being done in the name of the environment, liberal thinking is that there's no need to measure a policy's costs against the alleged benefits."
For his part in the charade, Obama released an Earth Day video in which his teleprompters claimed, "Through the Recovery Act, we've invested in clean energy and clean water infrastructure across the country. We are taking the necessary steps to keep our children safe and hold polluters accountable."
Ah, let's "invest" for the children.
Bottom line: Human activity does affect the climate. Every time you exhale CO2, you increase the concentration of that minuscule greenhouse gas in the atmosphere, but if you want to make a positive impact upon the environment, don't hold your breath. Roll up your sleeves and promote liberty and free enterprise, because, per capita, it is the free nations of the world that have the cleanest environments, and those with Socialist governments that have the worst.

Mark, great article. Our local station, KMOX 1120 AM had Mr. Leon Kolankiewicz on, he worked with Sen. Nelson, and he began an attack on the message of Earth Day, that one of the points had to do with human overpopulation. I couldn't stand to listen anymore and turned it off, but in this guy's mind, to celebrate Earth Day apparently most of the world should just end their own lives!

Your essay on Earth Day was spot on, as is every essay and every issue of Patriot Post. It reminded me of what I think every time I hear some Leftist going on about "planting a tree" for the Earth or some other cause.
Excuse me, but to plant that tree, didn't it have to be dug up from someplace else? They aren't adding anything to Mother Earth, they're just moving something from one place to another! A perfect example of feel-good action with no real impact.

"Those objectives provide cover for a much more sinister purpose -- using ecological concern to justify all manner of government regulation and intervention."
I agree pursuit of their goals would increase government, but I do not see proof that the sinister objective is increase in government. Hard to take it seriously when accusations come out of nowhere.
"he helped spawn has devolved from a pack of unwashed adolescent peaceniks and malcontents into a slick, influential and well funded cadre of Lefty politicos"
I was there for the first earth day, I rememeber what the kids looked like. The "unwashed" adjective is pointless and generally untrue. It does not further the arguement; it is off-topic and abusive.

Planet Earth has survived Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere at concentrations of about 7,000 parts per million. The Earth didn't burn up then ... and life flourished. There were MORE species then than there are now. The Carbon Dioxide concentration in the atmosphere today is less than 400 parts per million ...It takes 10,000 parts per million to even be 1% of the total atmosphere ... It has LITTLE to do with the temperature of the earth. Water vapor is a GREATER greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide ... should we TAX that too so we'll have fewer clouds and less rain? They've made Carbon Dioxide the boogy man BECAUSE if you control that, you also control ALL ENERGY sources ... plain and simple.

So we know for a fact that the "northern hemisphere will be warming, as it has for millions of years, except during ice ages," do we?
Do we have temperature records from millions of years ago? Do we have photos of the multiple ice ages? These are hypotheticals.
Given that we don't have the records to prove these things, perhaps it would be more scientifically accurate to say that the "northern hemisphere will be warming, as it has for all of recorded history."

Earth Day? Hmmm, must have missed that in our local celebration of Cylinder Appreciation Day. On April 22 every year we pay tribute to the glories and advancements of society due to the invention of the internal combustion engine.
As a means of determining ones dedication to this day, we have devised the CAI - the Cylinder Appreciation Index. Simply count up all of the cylinders in every working and utilized internal combustion engine in your household. If your CAI meets or exceeds your age, you are a good CA Patriot. If you fall short, we recommend an immediate trip to the nearest Hummer dealership to purchase a H-1 or H-2 while you still can.
Sincerely,

If supporters of the "climate change/global warming" agenda were serious about reducing co2 emissions they would volunteer to hold their breath for 24 hours in honor of earth day. I suspect that on the day AFTER earth day the problem would be solved!

I wrote my first article disputing the "Greenhouse Effect" in 1989. I have written several since then. My last one "Cap & Starve" points out that everything on this planet REQUIRES carbon dioxide for its existance. Another points out that the energy our nation uses anually is equivalent to the amount of energy from the sun falling on an area of the earth of less than 2000 sq. miles in the same time frame. I have also pointed out that volcanoes cause more than half the polution on this planet. (Example: Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii puts out 1500 pounds of elemental mercury per DAY.) I fear that environmentalists will cause the largest famine that this planet will ever see.

Thank you for your succinct essay on "Earth Day." What a farce the environmental movement has become. What perhaps once upon a time started out as a legitimate concern for preservation and conservation has morphed into something entirely different, as you outlined in your excellent essay.
I pray that Americans are finally starting to wake up to the truth that "environmentalism" has absolutely NOTHING to do with saving the environment. It's now all about money, power, control and, ultimately, destroying these United States.
God Save America

Has anyone ever thought about where our supply of fresh water comes from? Our glaciers and ice caps are fresh water in cold storage. As more babies, (human, plant, and animal)are born, more fresh water is needed. The Earth warms enough to provide that needed water. The demand for fresh water is growing faster than Mother Nature can provide.
Another thought,, Could it be possible that the Earth is warming from the inside, rather than from greenhouse gasses? Earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions are probably changing the gas vents of the Earth and possibly allowing the hot molten core to escape to the surface. Just a thought.

Good article with good points, sadly tainted with the pointless name calling. Gorons? Come on.... with all the information and misinformation floating around out there, is it any surprise that people draw misinformed conclusions? I am sure many of these people genuinely care about the concept of preserving our Earth's ecology and are not interested in or thinking about how that can serve as a springboard to more government in our lives. Suggesting they are somehow members of a cult is not going to help reach people who do not share our viewpoint.

I usually agree with all that y'all say and do at The Patriot. I do, however, disagree with the opening sentence:
"It's that time of year again -- that time when the northern hemisphere will be warming, as it has for millions of years, except during ice ages."
The first 2/3rds is fine, it's all this nonsense about millions of years and ice ages that concerns me, because I know that the Patriot is run by Constitutionally conservative Christians and I find no evidence or implication in the Bible which points to the earth being around for millions of years or for ice ages.
Well, keep up the good work as y'all help to defend life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness.
And remember to pray for Obama, not just Psalm 109:8 all the time but also along the lines of 1 Timothy 2:1-3.

You all would do well do note that the Earth is NOT your mother. Our creator is God who made nature. Why are we ashamed to say so and substitute the silly euphemism?
Blind obedience to the "earth being around for millions of years" mantra prevents you from finding truth. Repeating false information millions of times only benefits politicians and frauds.
That being said, I agree, Al Gore and his ilk are all frauds.

I remember the first "Earth Day." I worked in an office building across the street from McPherson Square in Washington, D. C. A big rally was held there. When the rally ended and the people who want to save the planet left, the beautiful park was literally covered with trash. Their walk did not match their talk. So much for "Earth Day."

But FIRST, we must create a groundswell, as follows:
A Congress of career politicians will NEVER allow us to constitutionally term limit them by an amendment. But... WE CAN IMPOSE term limits on them in Congressional elections (‘2010, 2012, 2014......):
1. Never reelect your Congressman or Senator.
2. Always vote, but only for the strongest challenger , regardless of party .
If Congress has not passed a term limits bill by 2014, repeat this in 2016, 2018....
Our only intelligent choice is to NEVER REELECT anyone in Congress!
The only infallible, unstoppable, guaranteed way to get a truly new Congress, AND a new politics, is NEVER REELECT ANY INCUMBENT! DO IT EVERY ELECTION until term limits is ratified. In other words, don't let anyone serve more than one term until Congress passes a term limits bill!
NEVER REELECT ANYONE IN CONGRESS. DO IT EVERY ELECTION! ... until we ratify term limits.

I must object to the application of the term "ignoble laureate" to Al Gore. The Ignoble Prize is a real aword given to scientists and researchers "whose work cannot or should not be reproduced" by the publishers of the Journal of Improbable Research/Irreproducible Results. These individuals are typically characterized by an outstanding sense of humor at their own expense, or by research into highly specialized subjects. For example, one laureate was honored for his paper on "emergency management of the acute zipper entrapped ..." (valuable research, but not amenable to a randomized controlled trial). These characteristics are in sharp contrast to Mr. Gore, who has no healthy sense of humor that I can detect and apparently wouldn,t recognize scientific research if it bit of his nose.

Well, if people want to buy in a "Big Lie" and cause humans a lot of grief for nothing, go ahead and do the cap and trade thing. This whole thing is a fraud from the get go. Take a look at the Coral Ridge Ministries and Answers-in-Genesis 48 minute flick for free at http://www.answersingenesis.org/PublicStore/product/Global-Warming-A-Scientific-and-Biblical-Expose-of-Climate-Change-DVD,5733,229.aspx
or from my webpage at

Also, we need to stop accepting the old age rhetoric without saying anything about it. There is plenty of evidence that shows that there was only one ice age that happened after the global flood of Noah’s time. Now that was a global climate change event to get excited about.

Any truth to the rumor that AlBore was going to fly to Iceland on a private jet to sue the volcano to stop putting out ash? And that the EPA issued a cease and desist order to the volcano? If these are true, then they worked as the volcano is emitting less ash. Good thing the volcano was stopped or we me have the same results as when Krakatau exploded, there was snow in New England in the summer. Maybe this is the answer to glbore warming.

I would say, Time for another TEA Party, but we have had plenty of those. The liberals look at the Tea Parties as a bunch of fringe folks doing a pep rally on an archaic view of Freedom. Lets drop the Tea and wake up and smell the coffee. If we just have pep rallies and do nothing else our rights and liberty will be lost for our lifetime and the lifetimes of our children and grandchildren. I do not avocate armed insurection, but, if there is to be a fight for our freedom in our cities and towns to regain what has been stolen, let it be today and let it be now and let it be me that pays the price of liberty for our future generations. I care not what course others may take, as for me "GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!"

After reading many of the good articles that you publish, and after having done an extremely intensive and extensive amount of research regarding the history of this once great Republic and the income tax, the only solution is to vote out ALL incumbents and demand that ALL replacements be demonstratively, controlled by the limitations and restrictions of the Constitution.

Sure, the world changes temperature. Other climate characteristics change, too. There are sedimentary rocks in the high altitude Rocky Mountains. There are petrified bamboo in the 3500 foot plus altitudes in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandle regions. There are mastodon elephant remains in Alaska. There are garnets and diamonds in Arkansas and South Carolina, evidence of terrible heat and pressure changes in the earth at those places.
I have seen and handled these, every one. Each of these are evidence of climate and geologic changes that far surpass anything Mr. Gore is worried about, or for which he falsifies science and data.
Certainly, none of these resulted from the impacts of humans or their use of carbon-based fuel. I don't think that humans are a threat to the earth by any means of any major consequence.

To those of you who still think the earth is not as old as millions of years, I suggest you look at the results of carbon dating. Go ahead and believe the Bible if you must, but if Columbus had thought the world was flat, we would be hundreds of years in the past by now. The climate changes, has changed and will continue to change, despite anything we do. I am for a clean environment and conservation, but not at the cost of an advancing population and technologies.

Sure we do. Much of the earth's climatic history is preserved for our study in the ice caps. Areas in which we have been taking core drillings from for decades. We have a very good record of the "warming and coolings". So your objections are ignorance, at best.

The quote from James Wilson is excellent, but don't overlook the second sentence. "What belongs to no one" is an apt description of the the air that we breathe--a very valuable resource that is not and cannot be parceled to each "man in particular." "Wasted by everyone" is what happens to air and other common resources unless someone organizes and arranges to secure and preserve from wasting by everyone as they seek to maximize the "economy" that they can enjoy from the resources that belong to them exclusively.
The environmental movement is mostly about building understanding that air, public waters, etc. "belong to everyone" and that everyone needs to take care of these valuable common resources. In a democracy, we count on government to act for everyone, both individually and collectively. There are, as you note, questions about the likelihood and level of potential future damages from global warming and about the justification for limitations on Carbon emissions. There is, however, no doubt that we shall all suffer much from wasting of precious common resources if we rule out the possibility for government to sometimes limit or prohibit actions that are great for individual's private economy but bad for the broader public good.

Anyone who thinks humans can change the temperature(warmer or cooler) has not been paying attention to MOTHER NATURE. Doesn't anyone remember the saying "Don't mess with mother nature"? She always has, and always will be in control of the temperature. I recycle and conserve energy as much as possible, and encourage others to do the same. But no matter what I do, MOTHER Nature will reign supreme in all matters concerning temperature!

So, Mr. Gore has decided to turn around Former
President Carter's "Global cooling" senario....
During his Presidency, we were going to be an Iceberg half way thru the middle of the U.S....remember the pictures of New York City looking like an iceberg in the 1970's? I do.
Additionally, the stupid light bulbs are a fire
danger to any home never mind the Mercury in them!
Poor Gore...does he ever get it right...No!

In the IPCC report that makes the claims of global warming, it does not include any of the underwater volcanoes. That's something like 85% of all the volcanoes on earth. They don't include them because they don't know how to properly test the ammount of co2 they emmit. So, how can they narrow it down to as little of a thing as your breath, cows or cars. I think they should continue gathering data befor they tax and change our entire way of life.

Thanks for another clear and concise analysis of the current threats against individual liberty continuing to flow out of the cesspool 30 miles down the road from my home in Baltimore.
By the way, given your contacts with quality T-shirt manufacturers, how about getting one to produce a new design for your store? You can write me down for at least 5. Here's my suggestion - a slightly overweight man, with a cigarette in his mouth, adding salt to a deliciously juicy hamburger. The caption... "My Body, My Choice." Oh wait, forgive me, that only applies when destroying the body of an unborn child.
Keep up the great work.

Too bad they can't concentrate on what we could all can do:recylcle and be thrifty with our resources. Get rid of those plastic bags cloggng up beaches and killing fish and never decomposing if not recylcled in to useful things like park benches!

Well, it's all our fault. You see we elected this fraud. The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the presidency. It will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to an electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails us. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president.”
