"The Declaration of Independence [is the] declaratory charter of our rights, and the rights of man." --Thomas Jefferson

The principal author of our Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, understood that, though Liberty is "endowed by our Creator," it is difficult to maintain among men. "The natural progress of things," he wrote, "is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground."

Indeed it is. We boldly threw off a monarchy in the American Revolution, but today countless bureaucrats under the command of a pack of hardcore Socialists have assumed the throne.

Jefferson also understood the consequences of Socialism: "Were we directed from Washington when to sow, and when to reap, we should soon want bread." But 234 years after the signing of our Declaration of Independence, Beltway politicos, most of the "Democrat" variety, insist that we must conduct ourselves, in matters large and small, according to their will -- and would have us believe they know better than we. Indeed, they have so effectively institutionalized this deceit that their electoral lemmings fall in behind them in lock step.

That subservience is an affront to our hard-won heritage of Liberty, and an insult to those generations who have defended it.

On July 4th of 1776, our Founders, assembled as representatives to the Second Continental Congress, issued a declaration stating most notably: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. ... That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government..."

In other words, the Founders rightly affirmed that because our rights are inherent by Natural Law as granted from our Creator, as such they can't be arbitrarily alienated by those who believed that the rights of men are gifts of government.

Our Founders publicly declared their intentions to defend these rights by attaching their signatures to the Declaration between July 4th and August 2nd of 1776. They and their fellow Patriots pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor as they set about to defend the Natural Rights of man.

At the conclusion of the American War for Independence in 1783, our Founders determined that the new nation needed a more suitable alliance among the states than the Articles of Confederation. After much deliberation, they proposed a Constitution, which authorized a very limited central governing authority and reserved all other rights to the states or the people. Our Constitution was adopted in 1787, ratified in 1788, and implemented in 1789 as subordinate guidance to our Declaration of Independence.

Since that time, generations of American Patriots have laid down their lives "to support and defend" the Essential Liberty enshrined in our Constitution. I would note here that their sacred oath, the same one I have taken many times in the service of our country, is not in support and defense of a so-called "living Constitution," an adulterated version of our authentic Constitution. It is under such perversion that Socialists in the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches have advanced their statist political agenda.

Statism, or Progressivism as promoted by contemporary American Leftists, has as its objective the establishment of an omnipotent central government authorized to be the arbiter of all that is "good" for "the people." Statism also confers upon the state ultimate control over the most significant social manifestation of individual rights, that of economic enterprise. Witness our current government's efforts to assert ever-greater control over heretofore private enterprises such as the automotive, health care, financial and energy industries.

Socialists endeavor to undermine our nation's founding principles in order to achieve their statist objectives, under which all associations among individuals ultimately augment the power and control of the state. The final expression and inevitable terminus of such power and control, if allowed to progress unabated, is tyranny.

The word "tyranny" is derived from the Latin "tyrannus," which translates to "illegitimate ruler."

Leftists in all levels of government, who, by definition, have deserted their oaths to support and defend our bona fide Constitution, are thus as illegitimate as the rules they implement.

Thank God there is a strong resurgence of demand for Essential Liberty and the Rule of Law across the Fruited Plain; a rebirth of the understanding that limited government is essential to Liberty; and a resounding call to take control of our national destiny and reset its course for the shores of freedom.

So how should we observe this 4th of July, the 234th celebration of our Declaration of Independence?

On July 3, 1776, Founding Patriot John Adams wrote to his beloved wife, Abigail, on this very topic:

Yesterday, the greatest question was decided, which ever was debated in America, and a greater, perhaps, never was or will be decided among men. You will see in a few days a Declaration setting forth the causes which have impelled us to this mighty revolution, and the reasons which will justify it in the sight of God and man. ... It ought to be commemorated as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this Continent to the other from this time forward forever more. You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will triumph in that Day's Transaction.

Today, we face ominous threats to our American heritage of Liberty, unfortunately more so from enemies within than without, and I would offer that we should commemorate this Independence Day, first and foremost, with "solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty," and with a rededication to the principles of Essential Liberty and restoration of the Rule of Law.

On December 19th of 1776, with the American Revolution well under way, Thomas Paine wrote, "Let it be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, we came forth to meet and to repulse it. ... I call not upon a few, but upon all: not on this state or that state, but on every state; up and help us; lay your shoulders to the wheel; better have too much force than too little, when so great an object is at stake."

And so it must be, today.

Reflecting on the Declaration shortly before his death on July 4th, 1826, the 50th anniversary of our founding, Thomas Jefferson wrote, "This was the object of the Declaration of Independence. Not to find out new principles, or new arguments, never before thought of, not merely to say things which had never been said before; but to place before mankind the common sense of the subject, in terms so plain and firm as to command their assent, and to justify ourselves in the independent stand we are compelled to take."

It is entirely fitting that Jefferson's fellow Patriot and longtime correspondent would also draw his last breath on that very day. But before he passed, John Adams offered these words of reflection: "[W]hat do we mean by the American Revolution? Do we mean the American war? The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the minds and hearts of the people; a change in their religious sentiments, of their duties and obligations. ... This radical change in the principles, opinions, sentiments, and affections of the people was the real American Revolution."

And Adams's last public words serve as an inspiration to us all, a toast to Liberty: "Independence forever!"

Libertas! And let us all say, Amen.

At first glance, in my email, I thought I was reading something that Alexander Hamilton might have written, in his day. THEN, I see who the real writer was, and the references to Jeffersonian-ism made much more sense.

I totally agree. The question becomes: How do we erradicate the damage done by the Hamiltonians throughout our History (oh, and the John Marhsalls, as well)..?

Do we actually have any Representatives in Office, anywhere, who are ready to eliminate THE FED, or quit over-spending FIAT currency?

Money was always meant to be the tool of the People. It was NEVER meant for the People to be "slaves to money" as teh Banking Cartels have achieved after the (silent) Revolution of 1913.

Can anyone answer my question?

The Progressives use language as a weapon. They contol context with it. We could start using Democratic Replublic in place of Democracy.

We could use Progressive and Conservative in place of Democrat and Replublican.

This would stop some o the circular double-speak and confusion the talking heads use to "muddy" evry conversation that keeps the "coolaid" drinmkers drinking.

De-centrailization down to the county seat level is the ANSWER. 50% all taxes paid locally...20% to Stateas for state infrastructure and security... 30% to National Government for national security and national infrastructure.

If Kagan's nomination goes through and she becomes a lifetime Federal judge we who value freedom, the constitution and all of the liberties that are inherent in that short, common sense document, will pay dearly as she moves her Statist philosophy forward.

Like Thomas Jefferson said before he died we must get fed up with this bastardization of America and become compelled through heart and mind to all stand up for the freedoms and the inalienable rights as stated in our Constitution.

The people of this GREAT Nation need to wake up while we still have some Life, Liberty, and some means to Pursue Happiness left. The Government in power now (and in the past) are in the take away mode. The present Government must be voted out while we still have the means to do it. If they continue on the path they are on, it will be too late. We are being made SLAVES of those in power, in Washington. It's becomming like the Company Store, like the song-16 Tons. You owe your soul to the company store, but in this case, you owe it to the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. I hate feeling like this, but I feel thankful that my being over 70 years old, I won't see the final distruction. BUT, I feel sorry for my children, their children, etc...plus all of the next generationS. May GOD Bless and keep them safe, during and after the take over of a once Great Nation. Everything being done in Washington today is preparing this Country for a takeover by those in power or some other nation, wait, maybe they are the same.

These elected(?) individuals are certainly not conducting business, for the betterment of Americans. Foul-mouthed Biden talks to citizens as if they were serfs. I'd love to have him say something like to me, so I could show him a few things that I learned in the Marine Corps, before being shipped to Vietnam, which was a choice that I made by volunteering and requesting duty in Vietnam.

This is just more of the same from this administration and black leaders. The men were video taped wearing black suits and wielding clubs outside the polling station.

Perhaps Obama, Liberals and the black congressional caucus believe this is just another example of the "white Man" out to persecute another poor, unfortunate black man.

If this had been white men wearing white suits and holding ropes, does anyone believe this would have been left alone and not garnered so little media attention?

When will blaming the white man cease, claims of persistent discrimination end, and the demands reparations end. Let’s remember that slavery happened many generations ago by people who all of us had no association with.

Please allow for the expression of some frustration. I loathe the progressive, left of left statists currently empowered to cripple our economy, trample on our liberties and enslave our proginy as much as anyone could. But I refuse to forget that under neo-conservatism, compassionate conservatism, theocratic altruist conservatism, the seeds were planted, indeed fertilized for the weeds we see displayed all around the idea and ideal of American individual rights and a constitutional republic. Without conservative republicans believing they could grow government a little less expansively, pass laws for compassion sake irrespective of their violation of posterity's individual rights (think social security enhancement, medicare expansion, TARP, bailouts, etc.)instead of being the champion of individual rights, we would never be in the mess we find ourselves in today. In other words, blame first and foremost republicans who have ceded the principles and premises to avowed statists! Who is more corrupt- a statist vulture who clearly espouses a desire for power over all our lives or a republican conservative wolf who espouses freedom, constitutional values and individual rights but compromises these values at every turn and with every vote? Would conservative men of honor and integrity ever compromise their values and vote for bailouts time and again.? Ask them to explain what qualifications a Kagan personifies to rule on constitutional matters at the Supreme Court. Until we learn to vote for the man and not the party, for the defenders of liberty and individual rights and not those that have paid only lip service we remain sheep, puppets, slaves, and whiners.

This, in my opinion, begs the question, who in the democrat party will put liberty, freedom and the Constitution, as it was written, over their party? Who will dare go against their leaders? As one example, look how obama's health care bill became law. Dems were coerced, bribed, begged and dragged in Christmas Eve, until they all gave in to the pressure. And which party is it that is leading us into socialism and even marxism? You site the Supreme Court and Kagan. Which party chose her and eagerly offers this very typical activist lib for the position? As a matter of fact, which party gave us barrak obama and all the luggage he carries? As for me, I will never, let me repeat that for emphasis, NEVER vote democrat because, while the candidate may well come into the race as an honorable person, that candidate will still end up under the thumbs of the pelosi's the reid's, the sorros's and the emmanuel's of the democrat party. I understand that everyone wishes to see this country turned around in a peaceful manner, but it wouldn't hurt, especially on this particular 4th of July after the recent affirmation of the second Article of the Bill of Rights by the Supreme Court, for everyone who has the yearning for a return of the Republic to arm themselves by following the currently dictated laws of their State to obtain a handgun and a concealed carry permit, where necessary, and let the statisics be the warning for those who would have our freedoms.

Please be sure to get proper training as dictated by common sense and for your own security. This move on behalf of yourself and your families will make a strong statement to the statists who seek to make you a slave.

After you've done that, join your local shooting range, or fish and game club. The more you know your fellow gun owners the better off you'll be in case the manure hits the fan. You will also meet some very nice same minded folks that enjoy their freedoms like you do.

I am 69 years old. I remember this country when we did not lock our doors....when we trusted all of our neighbors and friends and enjoyed a safe and good life. Families were the heart of America. We loved our country and our friends and enjoyed the trust and safety that was America.

Today our government has overwhelmed the people. We no longer really have a say in what is happening. The debt we now carry will impact our grandchildren and their children for generations. At my age, I imagine if I contract a serious disease I will not be able to get the care I could have gotten before Obamacare. I truly believe that there will be restrictions on what healthcare I can receive due to my age. What is not taken into consideration is that I worked for 36 years, paid into Social Security and Medicare, only to have it become a matter for "overview" and "judgment" by people that were not even alive when I worked my life away for 36 years, one day at a time. What has happened to the America I loved and was proud to be a part of? I am still totally proud of my country.......I am just appalled at what has happened to it during the last 18 months and where it will be at the end of 2012. The President speaks of Islam as though it is his religion. I believe it is his religion. He rallies for people of that faith and speaks of the beauty of that religion. Should we have a President with this persuasion? We still have no proof that he is a US citizen. I believe he was born in Africa, as members of his family have stated, and should be removed from office due to this alone. I fear for the America I was born into. I know we can never go back to the 1950's when life was a walk in the park. We went to the doctor and paid $10 or $12 dollars for our visit. There was no health insurance back then. I realize with sophisticated medical treatment today the cost is out of sight. But much of that is due to the cost of paying for all the people that need treatment and cannot pay for it. Obamacare says it is designed to fix this problem. It is not! We will still have the horrific costs of health care years after Obamacare is in effect. I am sickened at what has happened to my America. Obama campaigned on "change" but never really let us know the "change" he had in mind. I have family members that voted for him and now refuse to discuss his agenda or anything about him. I think they realize their horrible mistake in trusting this man. He has turned the tables on America with his praise of Islam, telling us the beauty of the call to worship in the Islam religion. He speaks the Islam words perfectly. Why are we not up in arms over this? Am I just over-reacting about Mr. Obama and the rest of the world thinks everything is A-OK?

Tell me how the rest of you feel about the things I have brought up here. Am I totally out of line, or do I have some fellow Americans that feel like I do.....we have been betrayed by a very classy, slick, politician that does not have America in his best interests?

No courts or grand jury hearings, courts of inquiry, or trials by jury should be held the day before or on Election day. However, a random pool of jurors should be called to serve for the Monday and Tuesday of election week- to serve as poll workers. Monday would be used to take the votes of these poll workers, train the poll workers in the proper procedures for verifying the identity & eligibility of each voter, & security of the ballots (return to paper) & assigning each juror to a polling place. Two sheriff deputies should be assigned to each polling place for protection of the legal process.

In my Cassel's Concise Dictionary, it gives the word "principle" as a NOUN only and the word "principal" as an adjective, likely the one you were searching for.

But my research of history tells me that Thomas Paine wrote the Declaration of Independence which Thomas Jefferson later wrote out in his own hand. So Jefferson re-wrote Paine's words . . . does that make an author, much less the "principal" author? Perhaps a secondary author with a fine handwriting?

If Jefferson were a principaled author, he would have directly acknowledged Paine as the source of his writing of the D of I.
