Tragedy to Triumph, Democrat Style

Do targets incite violence?

Federal Judge John Roll, a Republican recommended for the bench by Sen. John McCain and nominated by President George H. W. Bush, was among six citizens murdered by a psychopath in Tucson on Saturday. Democrat Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was among 14 wounded, and her recovery prospects are promising.

These deaths and injuries are an incalculable tragedy, and equally so are the deaths and injuries of thousands of other violent crime victims each year.

Rep. Giffords is a moderate Democrat and a self-described "strong supporter of the Second Amendment." That notwithstanding, the Democrat Party has already undertaken to convert the Tucson attack into political fodder for "gun control" and "hate speech" legislation, and a "national conversation" with the objective of silencing conservative political speech.

A gun did not commit the assault in Tucson, as the Left would like you to believe; the perpetrator was a mentally deranged 22-year-old, Jared Lee Loughner, who chose to use a gun rather than some other method to orchestrate his mayhem.

What do we know about the motivation of this killer?

Former classmate Caitie Parker described Loughner as "left wing" and "a pothead." Though Loughner listed Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and Marx's "Communist Manifesto" among his favorite books, it is unlikely that these Leftist texts, or any other Leftist political propaganda, drove him to mass murder.

According to his friend Bruce Tierney, Loughner fixated on Giffords after she was confused by a question he posed in a previous public forum about government manipulation of grammar. "How do you know words mean anything?" he asked.

Her confusion was understandable.

Though there is not a shred of evidence linking Loughner's actions to political rhetoric, Democrats seized the day by invoking Barack Hussein Obama's Rule 1 from former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste."

Obama and his histrionic sycophants are taking a page from Obama's political prophet, Saul Alinsky, author of "Rules for Radicals." Alinsky defined how to use a tragedy for political gain: "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. The opposition must be singled out as the target and 'frozen.' ... One acts decisively only in the conviction that all the angels are on one side and all the devils on the other."

As a "community organizer," Obama practiced Alinsky's maxim to "first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act. An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction and discontent."

The first order of business for Obama and company was to target Sarah Palin -- specifically a political map from her SarahPAC website that identified vulnerable Democrat districts with crosshairs. One of those districts was Giffords' 8th Congressional District in southern Arizona.

Liberals argued that such imagery contributed to the violence in Tucson.

It turns out, of course, that Democrats have used much more inflammatory graphics, such as a "Heartland Strategy map on the official Democrat Leadership Council's website, which identified "enemy lines."

Then Democrats went after conservative media commentators like Rush Limbaugh and websites like PatriotShop.US, accusing us of inciting violence with "hate speech."

When asked if the Tea Party movement is an instigator, Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) said, "For a while, you've been feeding this hatred, this division ... you feed it, you encourage it. ... Some of the extreme right wing has made demonization of elected officials their priority."

However, a quick search of comments by Democrat leaders and liberal media talkingheads reveals a hefty strain of hypocrisy. Of course, were it not for double standards, liberals wouldn't have any at all.

Obama: Trading shots

At a Democrat fundraiser, Obama had this to say about countering his Republican adversaries: "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun." He identified Republicans as "hostage takers," later saying, "I don't want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry. I'm angry!" I didn't consider any of this to be hate speech, just a clarification of how seriously and how far Democrats are willing to take the political fight.

Recently, Joe Biden remarked, "If I hear one more Republican tell me about balancing the budget, I am going to strangle them." Biden didn't mean that literally, of course, and yet we're being asked to believe that Sarah Palin "crosshairs" map was somehow an incitement for the targeted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords.

In a New York Times op-ed this week, former Demo Rep. Paul Kanjorski declared, "It is incumbent on all Americans to create an atmosphere of civility and respect in which political discourse can flow freely, without fear of violent confrontation." This would be the same Rep. Kanjorski who had these words for a then-Florida gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott: "They ought to have him and shoot him. Put him against the wall and shoot him."

Ah, yes, "civility and respect."

Subtlety from the Left

A few other rhetorical examples: From the official Democrat Party website: "The Democratic National Committee plans to target Republican John McCain." From the website of Former Demo Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, "Once again, the Republican Leadership has launched an attack on working families. The target this time is one of the cornerstones of protection for American workers." From the website of Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), "It Really Is Time For Americans To Take Up Pitchforks."

OK, I actually agree with McCaskill!

Headlines from Leftmedia sources: "Democrats Launch Website Targeting 'Republican Lies'" (Washington Post); "A coalition known as Americans United for Change is targeting Republican senators" (NPR); "Obama administration officials said they were targeting Republican Senators" (CNN); "Dems Play Hardball: Target Republican Senators" (Huffington Post); "In the meantime, Obama will continue to target Republicans" (CBS); "I have to tell you, Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebody's going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he's going to explode like a giant blimp" (MSNBC's Chris Matthews).

The Media Research Center has compiled numerous other violent threats issued by high-visibility liberals against conservatives.

No doubt clueless as to these many examples of Leftist "incitement," the celebrities piled on: "Hanoi Jane" Fonda, who infamously posed on an NVA antiaircraft gun only yards from where North Vietnamese prison guards were torturing American POWs, summed up the situation thusly: "Progressive Arizona Rep Gabrielle Giffords is shot. In her ads, Sarah Palin had her targeted in a gun site (sic). Inciting to violence." Thanks for your input, Jane.

Oh, and there was another Leftist celebrity who chimed in this week. Fidel Castro wrote in an op-ed, "The Tea Party, constituted by the most reactionary and politically backward elements of society ... in the midst of the crisis and disappointment over the promises that Obama has been unable to fulfill, will take the country into the abyss."

You know when a communist dictator and Socialist Democrats are on one side, you want to be on the other!

Speaking of Leftist op-eds, consider how The New York Times opined on two tragedies.

In 2009, after Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 30 others at Ft. Hood, all the while yelling "Allahu Akbar," Times' editors wrote: "In the aftermath of this unforgivable attack, it will be important to avoid drawing prejudicial conclusions from the fact that Major Hasan is an American Muslim whose parents came from the Middle East. President Obama was right when he told Americans, 'we don't know all the answers yet' and cautioned everyone against 'jumping to conclusions.'"

This week after the Tucson attack, that same Times jumped to this conclusion: "It is legitimate to hold Republicans and particularly their most virulent supporters in the media responsible for the gale of anger that has produced the vast majority of these threats, setting the nation on edge. Many on the right have exploited the arguments of division, reaping political power by demonizing immigrants, or welfare recipients, or bureaucrats. They seem to have persuaded many Americans that the government is not just misguided, but the enemy of the people. ... Now, having seen first hand the horror of political violence, Arizona should lead the nation in quieting the voices of intolerance, demanding an end to the temptations of bloodshed, and imposing sensible controls on its instruments."

Never let a serious crisis go to waste.

Crisis response, Part 1: Pennsylvania Demo Rep. Robert Brady is proposing "hate speech" legislation outlawing "language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a member of Congress."

Crisis response, Part 2: California Demo Sen. Barbara Boxer says, "I believe we should look at sensible gun laws again. Now, I'm not saying that these sensible gun laws would have stopped this killer..."* (Huh?)

Crisis response, Part 3: New Jersey Demo Sen. Frank Lautenberg announced that he is working with New York Demo Rep. Carolyn McCarthy on legislation that would ban the manufacture and sale of high-capacity magazines like those used in Tucson. According to McCarthy, "My staff is working on looking at the different legislation fixes that we might be able to do and we might be able to introduce as early as [Monday]."

Bottom line here is that liberal politicos will not be content until citizens are restricted to all but single-shot flintlocks. And then they will undertake to outlaw flint!

Since alcohol-related auto wrecks kill far more Americans than sociopaths with guns, perhaps McCarthy and Lautenberg will soon be out with legislation requiring a five-day waiting period to buy a beer, and of course, no hi-capacity six-pack purchases will be allowed.

Oh, did I mention that alcohol is a determinant in more than 70 percent of violent crimes?

For the record, I fully support your individual right to possess, transport and consume alcohol, but I also support the notion that you have an individual responsibility in society not to endanger others by driving in public after using it. If you do, the consequence should be swift and harsh. But outlawing alcohol will not stop its consumption, any more that prohibition did so, or the prohibition on drugs does so today.

Some quick facts about criminals who use guns: The annual murder rate per 100,000 people on the European continent is 5.4, while in the United States, it is 5.6 (Bureau of Justice Statistics). However, if you're not involved with the drug or gang subcultures, your chances of being murdered drop to par with the more "civilized" Western European nations, about 1.5 per 100,000.

As for Leftist attempts to disarm Americans, no amount of "gun control" will stop criminals from committing violent crimes against innocent men, women and children, though, arguably, gun restrictions can increase the violent crimes.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000. The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

Facts notwithstanding, the Left seizes on tragedies like Tucson in order to advance their political agenda, which is a sham and a shame. Their gun safety proposals have nothing to do with safety and everything to do with disarming Americans. Fortunately, for the moment, the Second Amendment in our Bill of Rights still provides something of an obstacle for Leftists like Boxer and Lautenberg.

Liberals are predisposed to blameshifting. Rather than addressing issues such as the stark social entropy engendered by their Socialist policies, Democrats would rather blame inanimate objects like guns.

Violence is a cultural problem, not a "gun problem."

Ronald Reagan once said, "We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions."

Indeed.

Please join us in prayer for all victims of criminal violence and negligence across our nation, and for their families. Let us also pray for national leadership that upholds the fundamental notion of individual liberty and its necessary coefficient, individual responsibility.

*Footnote: At a televised news conference this week, Boxer held up for the cameras and distributed to reporters an enlargement of a small image from the humor category of PatriotShop.US, a "Liberal Hunting Permit" campaign sticker. Boxer claimed it could incite violence, so her solution was to expose millions of people to this "dangerous image" likely none would ever see otherwise? I suppose that is as logical as her use of the Tucson tragedy to call for new gun control laws, even though in the next sentence she admits, "I'm not saying that these sensible gun laws would have stopped this killer." One might also argue that her name is associated with a blood sport, that it might inspire violence, and she should change it!

We've been telling you for YEARS that our children are being systematically and constantly exposed to images of violence and sexuality and immorality that may numb them to human suffering and/or distort their ideas of the difference between right and wrong. Suddenly, NOW, you say that images DO contribute to violence?

So seeing Sarah's political crosshairs on an Internet website page took a teetering brain and shoved it right over the edge of reason, then the fact he had a GUN - which is attributable to lack of strong gun control laws - enabled him to go kill someone? PULL-EEEZE...

...so this means that if any of us sees a picture of a donut, then the person who publishes the photo of that donut is ultimately responsible for us arming ourselves with the means to fatten our children, right? And it would never have happened, had we not had ACCESS to the donut, right?

If you people would look at statistics, you'd see that the above imaginary (and wildly ridiculous) scenario makes JUST ABOUT as much sense as saying that stricter gun control prevents crime.

After working with police and courts for 35 years of my adult life, I can tell you that if a deranged person or a criminal with deliberate intent to eliminate another human life, is bent on doing so, they will STEAL a weapon...and if a gun isn't available, knives, clubs, bats, axes...well, the list is nearly endless...ANYTHING can be used or obtained that'll do the job. Robbing decent people of the right to defend themselves and their homes and property, has always resulted in more intrusive government, and less protection for the innocents.

PS: How come nobody is airing the fact that one of the murdered in AZ was a Republican judge????? So much for poor Sara Palin's crosshairs being to blame, eh?

I mean seriously, when are you Dems gonna get REAL and stop jerking us all around? If you want our trust and respect, start doing something to EARN it.

I must applaud the tenacity of the liberal left. They have their talking points and ideology. No matter what, they will stick to them. Truth nor logic enter into their conversations.

Personally I get very frustrated when FOX News tries to interview a liberal, no matter what question they spew what they were sent in with. They really believe that We The People are stupid.

They should pay attention to what happened 11/2/10. The lame stream media, though still influencial has been neutured.

Strange place to put a lever safety, Mr. Ramirez.

Macabre though it may be to consider, I can only imagine how the Tuscon shooting would have played out had the law-abiding citizens present been armed as well.

To my understanding, a recent development in Arizona law provides the ability for citizens to carry concealed firearms without a permit, one of the few states in the Union to do so, and open carry, though I'm sure would arouse suspicion, is also technically legal, even without a permit.

I would contend that neither looser nor stricter gun laws are, enacted by themselves, an adequate method to prevent gun violence. This psychopath, Mr. Laughner, did what he did with the confidence that nobody would be able to challenge him, despite the ease by which an Arizona citizen can obtain a weapon. Perhaps, then, we must not only make it easier for law-abiding Americans to arm themselves, but we must also encourage them to do so.

"...Being necessary to the security of a free state," indeed.

It is interesting that with every article about Representative Gifford's attempted murder, the more moderate she becomes. I have seen clips of her secure-the-borders speech, and I am told that she is pro-gun.

Yet the two past full years, 2008 and 2009, that the Club for Growth has rated her, she earned a grade of 12 (out of 100) for her votes on bills that are growth-related. That compares with Pelosi and Sestak who each had a 7; Stupak (MI) at 13; and even Left-winger Kucinich (OH) scored a 28. Could it be that Giffords doesn't vote as moderately as she speaks?

The irony may have escaped some, but not all: the "polarization" to which BHO refers and to which he calls for an end, is nothing more than the product of his own radical leftwing ideology. In all things there must be balance; the extreme right is created to offset the extreme left. If BHO were more to the center, the offset would not be so far to the right.

owes Sarah Palin and the American people a profound

apology for their unwarranted, empirical and

unfounded remarks and reactions to Tuscon over the

past five days. The very people who hold the

microphones are the ones subscribing to this

despicable and divisive behaviour.

As I wrote on so many sites yesterday; the real issue and the primary topic of discussion, should

not be gun magazines and plastic shields, but rather

the importance of healing and repairing a failed

mental health care system, which in fact was

promulgated upon this nation by Democrats many

years ago, allowing people like Loughner to remain on the streets. So, now it's time, my fellow Americans, for everyone and especially our legislators to concentrate on the state of our mental health laws, so as hopefully to avert another Loughner from carrying out his sick vengeance on innocent people.

Sen. Barbara opined that "it should not be easy for a killer to obtain a gun...".I know that my reaction will fall on deaf ears, but has the Senator considered that, at the time Jared Loughner purchased the gun, he was not a "killer". That being so, in her mind, we all become potential killers, and since we can't distinguish between those who are and those who are not, we must of necessity, confiscate every one. I have news for the Senator, such action would in no way come close to solving her perceived problem.

In the wake of the tragedy, I have been calling on friends and family to spread the idea that we should all return to civil discourse and forswear the ugly rhetoric which characterizes our "news" media. It is possible to disagree and do so without ugly, hateful words.

God Bless all of you at the Patriot Post for your hard work exposing the lies of some of our "leaders" and "representatives". May you continue your work for many years to come, or until Jesus returns for the church.

Excellent points! However, Americans (particularly those claiming to be Christians) need to figure out that according to the Bible there is no such thing as God-given inalienable rights (including Second Amendment rights), but only God-given immutable responsibilities. Children clamor for their rights, adults look to fulfill their responsibilities.

Until then, Congress will continue to use such isolated shootings (individual irresponsible firearms use) to whittle away the Second Amendment "rights" of responsible users.

Instead, Christians need to recognize that their inalienable commission to bear arms in defense of themselves, their families, and their neighbors comes, not from the Second Amendment, but from Yahweh and His perfect laws and altogether righteous judgments (Psalm 19:7-9). I suggest that the person who gunned down Rep. Giffords should have his name erased from public memory.

The person who bombed the federal building in Oklahoma City did so for his own selfish reasons and to make a name for himself. I heard shortly afterward that there was a movement to abolish his name from public memory, to assign all memory of him to the trash bin of history. I think that was an excellent idea at the time, and I think it would be a good idea in this case.

This kind of person wants to see his name in public, splashed all over the news media. He is trying to draw attention to himself, and this is the best way he can think of to do it.

Since he was captured alive, he should stand trial for murder and then promptly be executed. There should be no thought given to an "insanity" plea. This man is not insane; he knew exactly what he wanted to do, and he did it.

Keep all mention of him out of the news media, except to announce his date with the executioner. That, I think, would be a fitting punishment for him, to know that he will be promptly forgotten; that essentially, he never existed.

You will notice that I have not mentioned the name of either one of these two persons. Keep the innocent victims in your thoughts and prayers, but let the names of the perpetrators of these heinous criminal acts be forever banished from polite conversation.

I couldn't agree with you more, Sir. At this point in time, and after the mid-term election losses, the Democrats are grasping at straws and blaming their adversaries for everything from hangnails to cheap booze. They remind me of some of our gossip mongers here where I live. These people have to have their gossip fix everyday or they aren't comfortable. If there are no bits to spread around and chat about, they will make something up. How pitiful that is. I remember Walt Kelly's Pogo commenting on what was wrong with the United States: "We have met the enemy and he is us." I can see going to Tucson to comfort the relatives of the fallen, but to turn the so-called Memorial Service into a media circus, and at the taxpayers expense was a bit much. Many will say I am insensitive, really? I think I am reasonable. And to blame guns for the event in Tucson is foolish beyond the pale. People have come forward now after the fact, with all sorts of tales about the shooters instability and ravings. Why didn't they blow the whistle on this guy beforehand, so that something could have been done to prevent it? I am a firm believer is "Love thy neighbor as thyself," but if the neighbor has a problem, get him help, don't ignore it and then blame something else after the fact.

Why did we have a political circus in Tucson?

It seems to me that a 5 minute talk from the East Room would have been in keeping with the recent tragedy. The circus was an insult to the dead, the wouunded and the families of both. Quiet, worshipful services in local churches would have been much more in keeping with the dignity of the citizens of this nation.

Our politicians should be ashamed to have allowed such an event, spent so much money just to give Mr. Narcissus (Obama)another photo op and an additional platform for his "eloquent words"!!

While the debate over correcting our course in this regard can be done with respect and 'civility', I am convinced that by 'civility' the left really means we should shut up and accept their deleterious actions. Great article! I vividly remember Hanoi Jane. I guess I'm telling my age here. I served three years in the U.S. Army just after that infamous Hanoi visit. Veterans were angry then and they are still angry to this day. Hanoi Jane has no idea how much REAL harm she caused. Some sick people in the liberal left may still consider her some kind of hero. Actually, one of the young men who took the suspect down did have a concealed handgun. He was in the store at the time, came out when he heard the shooting, and said had the assailant still been shooting, he would have killed him on the spot. Unfortunately, there was nobody next to the assailant with a concealed weapon, ready to end the mayhem.

The day we take away the right to own and bear arms is the day we announce to the world that the United States is available for invasion by our competitors, and our people are at the complete mercy of the government (elected or not). Don't think it can happen? It can. We do not conscript our military, only those who volunteer are trained to use firearms so only a small fraction of the US population can be relied upon to be proficient with organized military skill. The rest have to learn on their own. I learned to shoot with my father and brother before my military service and am a legal gun owner and avid hunter today. Most Americans learn this way, not in the Military. Owning guns and knowing how to use them in not just about personal self defense, it is about the rest of the world knowing who they are dealing with. We are Americans, we have guns, and we know how to use them. Let that fact stand as the best deterrant to our potential enemies, and serve to enable our citizens to continue defending their own. Sure, there are other countries where every home is allowed to keep a rifle. Even in Iraq every citizen can keep an AK-47 for protection, but they rarely know how to use it effectively. Every American should know how to handle and fire a weapon safely. Some may choose not to, it's a free country. They can line up with the rest of the sheep and wait it out while the patriots carry their share of the responsibiity to defend and protect this country. History is full of examples of what happens to entire societies incapable of defending themselves. Let not the actions of one lunatic dictate the future of our rights to own and bear arms.

The writings of Paul in Romans 1 and 2 are the Biblical source for the Christian belief about self evident truth. Paul uses two Greek phrases that correspond to the concept of being self-evident.

In Romans 1:19 the words "phaneros en autois" mean "evident in themselves" and in Romans 1:20 the words "tois poiemasin nooumena kathoratai" mean "by means of things that are made are understood, being clearly seen".

Paul written of in the scriptures uses both phrases in the context of what men know naturally by natural revelation, apart from the special revelation of Scripture. The apostle makes it clear that this is a general revelation through nature and through man's conscience. It is a revelation only of the first principles of truth and morality.

This revelation comes upon men from God despite man's darkness and sinfulness. Its knowledge does not originate with man, but is a gracious endowment from man's Maker. All men know it naturally, both through conscience and through observing the natural order.

The Declaration of Independence proclaims its rights theory with the words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

These were rights ordained by God in the constitution of the universe, the Holy Bible. Whether or not the British acknowledged them was irrelevant because these rights were "self-evident" - clear and certain.

Twentieth-century society has lost its foundation for an understanding of "rights". Most see rights as a matter of politics where the government can create and take them away. There is a great deal of talk about "human rights" and "civil rights" but the concept of "unalienable rights" is all but lost. This situation signals a crisis in modern political thought and threatens Western freedoms, since the concept of rights is "theory dependent".

America was founded on "unalienable rights"- those that man may not unconditionally sell, trade, barter, or transfer without denying the image of God in himself. "Inalienable" is another word for eternal, unaffected by the passage of time without beginning or end under any circumstance. It implies that there are moral absolutes. Today, the rights theory of the founding fathers is routinely traced to secular tradition. Why should Americans care that the Biblical roots of our culture have been exchanged for a wholesale commitment to the prevailing secular philosophy? A major difference is that secular philosophy is based on notions of power, whereas Biblical politics is based on concepts of authority. In the secular view, nothing is ever impermissible because no lines are drawn that cannot be crossed.

The American Revolution is not over. The ideals enshrined in the Declaration for which the founders fought and died - ideals of law, justice, equality, liberty, and inalienable rights, self government- are barely understood in America today, much less in the rest of the world. The American Revolution was more than a contest with England. It was and is a war to defend a vision about law, rights, justice, and the God-given dignity of man. The vision was inspired over time by the words of the Holy Bible and the teachings of Christianity but applies to all men everywhere regardless of their faith.

One thing that I understand and respect, however, is that one of the cornerstones of this nation is there is no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. I do not think there is any group forcing anyone to believe Gods truths and wisdoms, so why are those progressive ideas trying to force people NOT to believe the values and mercies presented by the God of Israel?

If any expression of Christian faith is really that offensive, then one could consider carefully; does one deserve the freedoms created by Christian faith in the United States - regardless of whether or not they were born here.

Hood and mention their accomplishments and interests in the same fashion that Obama did Loughner's victims. Obama had little to say about the Ft. Hood incident at the time and has said nothing since. His speech about Loughner and his victims was mere political theater, for all practical purposes his speech finished the issue as far as he's concerned. A slight disagreement with Robert the Bruce: to erase the name of the monster who perpetrated the Tuscon carnage would be a significant error. If this were the right thing to do, then few people alive today would know the murderous capabilities, and horrifying accomplishments of a Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini or Mao. We all need to be aware, and stay aware, that there are seriously screwed up people in the world from whom we MUST be able, and willing, to protect ourselves. I do agree that Mr. loughner need to be arraigned, tried, and, if found guilty, sentenced and executed quickly, and very publicly. Based on the evidence found, to allow this man to escape his due punishment, via the "insanity plea", would be a travesty. However, to erase the knowledge of his existence, and his heinous crime would be a far greater one. Like all his ilk, who exist only to spread misery, suffering and pain, we MUST be ever aware thet we have a responsibility, both individually, and as a people, to protect ourselves and our way of life from them all.

Maybe while searching through Jarod Loughner's personal belongings, authorities will find "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky. Alinsky was a left-wing radical and a legendary Chicago rabble-rouser.

In this book he lists thirteen rules which radicals must use to subdue their opponents in order to kill open and honest debate. Here are three of them:

Rule number 5: Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage.

Rule number 8: Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose.

Rule number 13: Pick a target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

Saul Alinsky trained his acolytes in highly agressive techniques of community activism. Alinsky also mastered the art of scape-goating or displacement of rage.

Senator Boxer might recall that the largest U.S. mass murder (excepting the 9/11 attack), was the arson of Happy Land night club in New York City, in 1988. A drunk customer (yes, alcohol was involve) who had been thrown out of the club earlier, murdered 87 citizens by arson in a fire started with a fifty cents worth of gasoline and two matches. Last I checked, gasoline and matches are much more accessible than Glocks and high-capacity magazines.

In my opinion, Loughner never intended to survive this attack. He failed in his attempt at "suicide by cop".

With this said, a lesson that must be heeded is the vital necessity for all of us to maintain situational awareness. Pay attention to what's going on around you. Live life in a "yellow alert" situation. It's easy to Monday Morning Qauaterback, and I certainly wasn't there, but I think it very likely that a lot of folks at this event were very distracted. They probably had their cell phones out and were taking photos and texting about their meeting with Rep. Gifford. Laughner, either by luck or by design, was able to approach without being identified as a threat by anyone in the crowd. He was able to exploit this situation to work his evil plan.

To everyone who is calling for stricter gun laws in light of the tragedy in Tucson, may I offer this little tidbit: If guns kill people, then pencils misspell words, cars drive drunk, and spoons make people fat. Remember: Hold the person accountable for their actions, not the means they chose to utilize their actions!!! Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Guns are an instrument of self defense an not meant to be in the hands of nut cases. If gun control were an answer, how would you people keep guns from getting in the hands of criminals through the black market. If the people that wish to be shot up by burglars, rapist, gang violence that runs ramped, people which chose to hold you up for what little money you have for their next fix. By all means be their target, but don't expect my family to suffer because you like living in dangerous times. People who carry concealed go through rigorous background checks, and in some states must prove proficiency with a hand gun. A hand gun is only a tool just as a tire iron, a knife, a skill saw, a chain saw, a hammer, and the list goes on and any of the recently mentioned can be just as deadly to you or your family. Think about it very carefully and realize that anything in the wrong hands can be deadly to you and your family. At least a hand gun and proper training puts you and your family to a better advantage than having nothing. The mind is a terrible thing to waste, and the life of a family member by an idiot and you watching and could have done something is even a worse thing to waste. You people get real remember that even Law Enforcement around the country are having furloughs’ and cut backs, and some running 12 hour shifts with limited manpower and takes sometimes and hour to get to you in the county. Tell me that the home evaders don't have a chance to succeed unless stopped by your or a family member.

I do have one concern though, and I think there are many who would agree.

It is of this talk about the term "surveyors symbol", in reference to the crosshair symbol that was used on Sarah Palin's website last year during the election.

There is nothing wrong with using a crosshair symbol, when pointing out an area, or an opponent.

It is a symbol that has been used by many, for a many number of instances. Democrats have used this symbol the same way.

Sarah Palin has no reason to feel a sense of shame for a symbol used, and any metaphor that she used in order to get her message across in order to defeat an opposing "idea".

This "surveyors symbol"..."crosshair"...is nothing more than a mincing of words..."tit for tat"..."splitting hairs"...and it sounds more like someone trying to cover up what it actually is, and using the term "surveyors symbol", is a copout.

It is a symbol to mark a point of reference...a place...a target point. Nothing more, nothing less.

Had Palin placed a picture of Gabrielle Giffords with a crosshair across her face...(which I don't believe she did...and I honestly cannot see her doing so)...then maybe people could knock Palin around a bit for her tactic.

I hope that many here, will take this into consideration when talking amongst friends. And when given the chance, correct someone when they try to say "...it wasn't a crosshair, it was a 'surveyor symbol'...", whether it be amongst friends, or written by a journalist or commentator.

In times past, when common sense and sanity prevailed, there would not have been almost 24/7 coverage of this horrific slaughter. There would be no speaking to the mother and father of their murdered nine-year old the day after her murder. There would be no using this tragedy as political fodder.

In other words, humanity, common sense and sanity are sorely lacking in our culture of death, destruction, and delusion.

May God help us to revert back to being humans rather than mere animals with little use of our brains.

Didn't read all the posts so my apologies if this idea has already been proposed. I heard Bill O'Reilly suggest an expanded U.S. Marshall force with one assigned to every Representative or Senator at these type of public events. Why pay for this service when carry permitted volunteers would show up for free. And the perps would never know who or how many would be there. He would be so obvious in checking out all attendees for possible concealed weapons that he would be easy to spot for those with weapons.

First suggestion in the hat for a name.... how about "Second Amendment Angels". I know someone can come up with a better one... let's hear them.

This was a very long response to your article, so I may have missed it somewhere. As has been pointed out previously, the gun is an inanimate object. It does not and cannot, function without manipulation by a person. That being said, the graphic of the weapon is a GLOCK semi-automatic pistol. The only safety on a GLOCK is the person holding the weapon. There is virtually no other way for the weapon to be fired unless the trigger is "pulled" as has been tested and tested and tested. I carried one for the final 16 years of of my 23 law enforcement duties. In fact, I had the trigger mechanism replaced on the 'factory' shipped weapon due to the extreme (in my use) pressure required to discharge it. I understand the reason for the stronger pressure is to avoid accidental discharge by 'reflex' pressure caused by a sudden outside influence, i.e. auto backfire, dropped can etc. I just seen the graphic and immediately recognized it as being incorrect.
