Perhaps President Obama was reading press reports on the Occupy crowd when he concluded Americans are lazy. How better to describe an alleged movement that refuses to take responsibility, demands respect, demands immediate action with no thought to consequence, and complains of the consequences of their own personal deliberate decisions, e.g. accept student loans to study curricula incapable of providing them with gainful employment outside academia. Granted, there may have been some sincere objectors to the abuses of the New York financiers, which is credible, but the bulk of the movement now consists of anarchists, hippies, and bums, but I repeat myself. They conflate Wall Street with corporate America, those who trade paper with those producing desirable goods and services. They demand a statist solution when statist policies, favoritism, and corruption have paved the way for the status quo. I saw a comment but failed to get the attritbution: "They don't know what they want, but they want it now." These are the victims of the public education system, inculcated with the liberal mindset of multi-culti Marxism-lite, taught that America was founded by evil capitalists and slave-traders, that American exceptionalism is a myth, and that nirvana can be achieved by submission to the state and its allure of cradle-to-grave security in exchange for liberty.

I thoroughly enjoy your columns and usually you are spot on. However, you are incorrect in your analysis of the use of the tank poster. This symbolism is actually tied into Revolutionary Organization 17 November - a Marxist-Leninist terrorist organization in Greece that is violently opposed to imperialism and capitalism and NATO and the United States; an active terrorist group during the 1980's. This group which goes by N17, (look familiar?) also murdered the CIA station Chief and two US Navy attaches in their bloody history. Make no mistake, the people behind this are not ignorant, the symbolism and the date that this is to take place is no coincidence. The Greek military crushed a student rebellion with the use of tanks and a number of students were killed, hence OWS portrayal of not just one person but many standing behind him, not one tank but many behind it.

If you let the government pick winners and losers, it makes sense that the winners will be a minority. In this case, you can make a pretty good argument that the government favors unions, some well-connected corporations and banks, and other pernicious groups like AARP over the rest of us.

These protesters are so ignorant of true history and conditions of mankind under the kind of mob rule in the past, they have indeed become "useful idiots" to the destructive elements in America. There will never be a perfect government nor society, but the American "experiment" in a democratice republic is the closest thing civilization has ever seen.

Hey, Maxine, you seem to have some secret knowledge about the "the goals of the protesters." Care to fill the rest of us in, because this nonsense has been going on for 2 months and heck if I know anyone who knows what these people want.

I am a member of the 99 percent. In fact, I am one of those folks whom you, President Obama, claim is suffering at the hands of the rich. I just want to take a moment to ask what that means? My husband lost his job June 3rd, less than a month after my son was diagnosed with cancer. Because we had great insurance from his previous job and COBRA allowed us to keep it, and unemployment benefits kicked in allowing my husband to seek new employment, we weathered that storm. We weathered the storm of the previous year as well, when my husband lost his 20 year bank job due to the collapse of bank profits from a fiasco begun during, not the Bush administration, but the Clinton administration, when the democrats pushed for easier access to loans by people with bad credit. Because it was a slim year for us in 2010, we had ZERO tax dollars withheld from our paychecks, yet received $5000 from the federal government when we sent in our return. Who gave us that money? The 1%, that's who. I am so grateful to the 1% for continuing to deliver the goods when the rest of us are scraping by. Even though relatively speaking we are currently considered "the working poor", my family enjoys a lifestyle heads and tails more luxurious than those of a generation before, because of the advancements made by people who invest in advancements - the 1%. Finally, I want to state boldly that those who hold to constitutional conservatism, who believe in states' rights, individual liberty and the democratic(which includes electoral college, thank-you-very-much!) process make up a vast majority of that 99% the tiny group of rabble-rousers claim to represent, and they do not represent us at all. If we fall as a nation, it will be at the hands of those in OUR number who have become lazy, complacent, apathetic and who take for granted their freedom. Thank you for letting me "occupy" your time for a moment.

If the self-described "99%ers" want to know the real crux of the problem they're protesting, they have only to look in a mirror. THEY are the army of knee-jerk radical-wing-Democratic Party voters, supporters and promoters that embrace corrupt and irresponsible governance, silence and demagogue all reasonable voices, and violently oppose all efforts toward feasible solutions.

These people should be occupying the schools that they attended to get their tuition back, they are more stupid than the Hippies of the 60s.

I know a lot of the Occupy Wall Street Protesters have socialist blood in their veins. They don't like anything capitalist in nature. They don't like profits. They see profits as unfair, because they don't have any. Their resentment is soul-deep.

However, we shouldn't disregard or discount them. There might be some validity to their protests. To many, Wall Steet looks and acts like a monopoly. The business is populated by a select group of individuals, with select credentials. The rules of the game aren't generally known by the public, and there's a common perception that, outside of executing trades for clients, they bring very little added value to the economy, and their work doesn't justify their compensation.

Monopolies invite corruption and foster inequity. If corruption in the industry justifies reform, then the Wall Street Protestors deserve our attention, and society's action.

We can protest Wall Street greed all we want, but we mustn't let that distract us from the real culprits: government. Obama and his socialist cronies would like nothing better than for these Occupy Wall Street protestors to distract us from the fact that legislators have given themselves the permission to profit from insider trading, which is a crime for everyone else. Obama would love for us all to forget about his bailouts and Obamacare. There's just too much to list. Reread Michele Malkin's piece in this past Monday's Patriot Post. That's more aggravating fuel for the fire.

I'm from a small town in NC. During an earlier time when fire-bombs were being tossed in cities across the country, our police chief met a large group of demonstrators who were threatning arson. He assured them that free speech was welcome but if firebombs were thrown "You'll be picking up dead bodies off the street". There were no firebombs thrown here! We need a thousand more like him.

Yours is a touching story but it aptly illustrates the essential American problem that Liberalism may not have caused, but certainly is aggravating. And that problem isn't the 99% you're part of; that problem is the roughly 50% that you may be part of.

Every day of every year, almost 50% of our population works, or doesn't work, but is absolved from paying any federal tax, because their incomes are deemed to be too low. Some even get subsistence payments, as you said you and your husband received. It's the Liberals who persistently create and enhance entitlement programs, not to fix a problem but, in my opinion, to increase government dependency. And it has worked. That 50% number wasn't always 50%. It's a number that used to be much smaller but has steadily risen over decades and decades.

I'm not blaming you and yours. By your description, your husband has a work history. That's wonderful but so do the 1%, and so do all kinds of other percentage groups, excluding some of the bottom 50%. The progressive tax rate system and these various entitlement programs have fostered a giant dependent class in America, and it's growing. Obama and the Democrats want this to happen because even though the bottom 50% are absolved from paying taxes, THEY ARE STILL ABLE TO VOTE. AND KNOWING FULL WELL WHERE THEIR MEAL TICKET COMES FROM, HOW DO YOU SUPPOSE THEY DECIDE TO VOTE???

Liberalism is all about a bleeding heart in places like houses of worship, but it's all about power in the political arena. Liberal politicos say they want to help the poor but all they ever do is to tax the rich. The Liberals' only solution to "poverty" is the immorality of income redistribution.

I'd rather see America with a much more robust economy so that your husband would have little chance of getting laid off. I would rather see a more equitable wage scale in America, so that the bottom 50% can not only support their families but can pay their fair share of taxes to boot. I'd rather see the bottom 50% being proud to pay their taxes and concerned about how much they're paying and where it's being spent - so they have a clear idea of how they should vote. I'd rather see them have a vested interest in the taxes they pay, instead of seeing them cast their votes over spending initiatives that tax other peoples' money.

But we don't see any ideas like these from Obama and the Democrats, do we? All we get from them is the same playbook: let the rich make their money so the government can steal it away from them and redistribute it. And let that bottom 50% get bigger and bigger and the top 50% get smaller and smaller (so the tax takers outnumber the taxpayers), and we (meaning Democrat-controlled government) will be in charge of it all, as if we were kings. We can make ourselves rich in the process because who can go against us?

Obama and the Democrats make legality out of immorality. This is the classic road to socialism. The USSR had a constitution too, but socialism devalued it down to the worth of the parchment upon which it was written, and nothing more.

And after all this, does anyone really wonder whether Obama is a socialist?

I was ten years of age when the horrors of the attack on Pearl Harbor took place. Even without TV I could imagine the destruction, but even I was able to find in my heart the defense of our land being begun.

30 years of Reaganomics has destroyed the country. Before Reagan, we had continued high GDP growth and less than 1 trillion total deficit. If only we could undo the damage of 'trickle down' we would all be better off. Glad to see the country has woken up and people are protesting the greed of the so called Capitalists. America is sliding in all areas now. Healthcare, National Debt, income inequality, crime, education, etc. Europe leads us in most categories, but we should all fear the so called evil Socialism. Yea, France is better than us in all the above mentioned categories, but we should fear them. Maybe we should try to be MORE like some of the European countries. Mr. Alexander missed another important point between "Tank Man" and the occupiers. The lone man who stood against the tanks was peaceable. And, contrary to what the "occupiers" seem to think, they do not have a right to just assemble. They have a constitutional right "PEACEABLY to assemble." There is a great difference between the 2 concepts. Oh, and while I'm at it, Occupiers, there is a difference between "free speech" and "camping out"!

Mr. President: Free enterprise and liberty cannot be seperated. You cannot have one without the other. Financial markets must have regulation or greed will corrupt them. Politicians must be regulated or greed will corrupt them. People must be governed or greed will corrupt them. My point sir is simple, use a common sense approach to government and regulation, don't over burden or over reach your authority, and let free enterprise, free markets, and personal liberties work together. We've never had free enterprise. The 1% and welfare recipients are both taken care of by the government. Who bailed out the banks and wall street the last go around and who got screwed? I don't like the occupiers but I do think they've started a conversation in this country about how corrupt and greedy our government, wall street and large corporations are. Lobbiest buy government. The whining crybabies at the various "Occupy" protests who act like they have the right to do whatever they please will learn, either sooner or later that the piper has to be paid. It may well be a painful and expensive lesson for them all. They're just lucky that the police are so well trained and have sucked it up so far. As so often among ill-considered and un-educated "revolutions" against those who have either abused their power or positions, the OWS'ers have not clearly identified their "targets". They paint with a broad brush in the language of class warfare and therefore lose what focus and power they could have brought to the fight. "Wall Street" is not the culprit - certain sectors within Wall Street are: namely the investment bankers. Exposing and fighting the collusion and corruption among the investment bankers, Congress, the White House (both parties), and the regulatory (watch dog?) agencies would be a cause worth engaging in sadly, a never ending cause.

The Constitution provides for the replacement or approval of the House of Representatives every 2 years,the replacement or approval of a third of the Senate every two years but the President every four years. During four years a President can cause much trouble. The present one has threatened to change or remove the Constitution by speech, in writing and by actions with Executive orders. The only protection we have is placed in the hands of the Congress by means of Impeachment. I suggest all of us contact our Representatives and suggest that action be taken as soon as possible. The basis of impeachment is high crimes and misdemeanors. There are plenty of both and time is runniing out.

No one owes you a thing! Go work for what you need/want. Or don't complain if/when your stuff is stolen. After all, you are the ones who think everything should be re-distributed.

I was there during the Watts riots, I was pulling trailers out of buildings that were being looted, after it was over, I noticed that there were no jobs for people to go to, no stores left for people to shop at, and for many years after, no businesses were willing to locate there, so go ahead and burn down New York, while you are about it, why not Los Angeles, Chicago, San francisco, Oakland, and of course Washington, when you are through, where are you going to buy food, clothing, and other necessities of life?
