Gratitude and Thanksgiving

The genuine spirit of Thanksgiving.

"I do recommend and assign Thursday ... next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be." --George Washington (October 3, 1789)

Harvest of Plenty.

My family will be celebrating this Thanksgiving in the mountains of Tennessee with family and friends, and in warm homes with plenty. We are blessed far beyond any measure of what we deserve.

Though no day of the year passes without expressions of gratitude to my Creator for His provision, I sometimes take blessings for granted. Most often my lack of gratitude stems from preoccupation with the challenges I face as an individual, and concern for those we face as a nation.

I welcome this Thanksgiving week as an opportunity to pause, step back, and reflect upon how blessed we really are.

One of the maxims by which we strive to live in our home, "Live third person, serving God first, others second and ourselves third," is supported by the fact that whenever we lose ourselves in selfish preoccupation, we can assuredly find ourselves through serving others. It is in that service that we lift the veil of vanity and rediscover God's purpose for our lives.

One of the ways God has richly blessed this humble servant is by allowing me to serve Patriots across our nation and around the world. Along with my Patriot team, I am honored to share the burden of defending our inheritance of Liberty with pen, though our swords are always at the ready. We are grateful to stand with you, among millions of other Patriots, steadfast in that defense.

To put our national Day of Thanksgiving into proper context is to consider it as emanating from the Hand of Providence. With this in mind, I invite you to take a moment and read about the The History and Legacy of Thanksgiving, and the proclamations for those that followed.

Thanks be to God

For a fine perspective on our great history, I encourage you to view "We still hold these truths" from my colleague, constitutional scholar Matt Spalding.

To promote a better understanding of Thanksgiving among the young people in your life, introduce them to our Thanksgiving Quiz.

For inspiration, you might read the text of My Beautiful America, whose author is a fellow Tennessean, Charlie Daniels. Better yet, listen to the song from this great Patriot.

Tell us for what you are thankful!

I humbly thank you for the privilege of serving as editor and publisher of The Patriot Post. On behalf of your Patriot team and our National Advisory Committee, I wish you a peaceful Thanksgiving, and God's blessings to you and your family.

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the LORD is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations." --Psalm 100:4-5

I leave you with the words below from America the Beautiful by Katharine Lee Bates.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassion'd stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness.

America! America!
God mend thine ev'ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for heroes prov'd
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country lov'd,
And mercy more than life.

America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine.

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears.

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.

Q.) For what are you thankful?

A.) The sacrifice that God the Father offers us in His Son Jesus Christ who redeemed us from eternal death if we only accept and believe.

I am thankful to have lived 78 years in a country that allowed me to be a good/profitable/happy as I want to be as long as I don't encroach on others. I thank GOD Himself for providing this great land for us.

I am also thankful for those who are working diligently to help us SAVE the country and glad that I have the opportunity to support them with my limited funds.

I am thankful to my God that I survived the horrible

experiences of World War II and came home to my dear

family and friends. I give thanks every day for my wife and five children, and many grandchildren (14)and great grandchildren (15) and for being allowed to survive to a distant age (88) in good health. I

pray constantly for our deployed youth in harm's way. May they tolerate the lonley days and nights of

distance from their loved ones.

I am thankful for The Patriot Post and the men and women who work at sending its message out across our land.

I am thankful for the men and women in our armed forces, who serve in harm's way to protect those of us here at home.

And, I am thankful for those righteous men and women who work in our government and who follow the precepts of the US Constituion as they perform their duties. I am especially thankful for the many employees of the Veterans Administration who work on behalf of those who have served our country.

May God bless America!

I am truely grateful for so many things that it is nearly impossible to list here. Primarily I'm grateful for my Christianity and the sacrifices made for me by the Lord. After that everything is inconsequential, except that somewhere near the top of that list should be a country like America and elsewhere my conservative nature which unfortunately for me came late in my life.

Thanksgiving Prayer

Robert A. Hall

www.tartanmarine.blogspot.com

Heavenly Father, Lord God of Hosts, we ask Your blessing on this food and on our family and friends about to partake of it. We thank You for a country where each person is allowed to seek You in his or her own way, free of a state-imposed theocracy which works to the benefit of the theocrats and against the people’s liberties. We thank You for Your bounty, ever aware that there are so many people throughout the world who live under systems of oligarchy, tyranny and statism who thus suffer from hunger, privation and a lack of freedom. We ask that You put charity in our hearts to help the less fortunate of our own volition, and not through coercion.

We thank You for the foresight of the founders of this great Republic, who gave us a free-market, capitalist system where property rights are protected, allowing the accumulation of wealth, which has given tens of millions of Your people Freedom from Want since it was establish out of the smoke and suffering of battle. We ask Your protection and care for our free economy and our free society that future generations may share in Your bounty and blessings.

Father, we seek Your blessings on our troops and our veterans, those young people who give all, often even their lives, to protect the freedoms You have bestowed on us, from those who make a perversion of God, a catechism of power and a religion of the state. Return our guardians safe to their families, comfort the wounded and, when they must sacrifice all, take them into Your Grace for eternity. They are truly the one percent, who shame their contemporaries who want to receive without toil from the efforts of others. We thank You for sending them to protect us and to serve as an example of the better angels of our nature.

We know, Father, that our people and our country have not been perfect. Nor have we who petition you on this day of Thanksgiving been without sin and flaws. We ask Your blessing and guidance on those who would make our nation better and freer and more prosperous and to make us better people. We ask that You turn Your face against those who would destroy freedom and prosperity, whether they disguise their lust for power as being in Your name or the name of “social justice” and secular government. Put up Your hand as a shield against those who would enslave Your people to government to toil for those who traded power for unearned largess.

We ask, Father, that You preserve this great Republic and its free institutions, including the freedom for people to keep what they earn by their toil and by taking the risks that advance prosperity, free from the fear of confiscation by thugs on the street or thugs in government. We ask this in Your Name, not for ourselves, who have already enjoyed wonderful lives in this blessed country, but for our children, our grandchildren and all future children, that they may enjoy the blessings of liberty and Freedom from Want that we believe are gifts from You and thus the rightful inheritance of Your people.

Amen.

"Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law."

It struck me that the rule of law is mentioned here...I never saw that before. We should confirm our liberty in LAW (not feelings or opinions).

Proclamation 106 - Thanksgiving Day, 1863 October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.

In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans. mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this 3rd day of October, A. D. 1863, and of the Independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

As I read your words, it reminded me of what I was taught in Sunday School as a child. Real Joy comes from putting JESUS OTHERS YOU in your life in that order. At 83 years of age, I can attest to the fact that this DOES bring JOY, and PEACE, in our own lives, as well as the lives of the recipients.

Thank you for your beautiful email, reminding us of

the true meaning of Thanksgiving, and of all the blessings God has bestowed upon us.

I pray that those many of us who dearly love our great country, will pledge to each do all he or she can to return our country to its former glory.

We must obey our Constitution. We must forge peace

through strength. We must demand that our government

spend a great deal less than it takes in. We must

make a concerted, serious effort to defend our bor-

ders, and I could go on and on.

This Thanksgiving, let's vow to make this country as good for our children as it was for us, always

remembering that tyranny can be less than a decade

away, if we don't guard against it.

I would like to add one more thing to GDC comment.

One of the things that makes me mad is that the colonist came to this country to get away from religious persecution, yet when they came over to this country they insisted that the Native American’s change their way of prayer to the creator to Christianity. That to me of just plain wrong. I am a Christian but I much rather follow the way the Native Americans honor the creator than I do my own religion. They have ALWAYS thanked God for everything they have and if it wasn’t for the Native Americans none of the colonists would have survived.

I am thankful that the good Lord has allowed me to survive for my 71 years of life and for my loving wife and my entire family.

I am a little doubtful on how things will be after the government gets done taking my Navy retirement to pay for my Free health care I was promised during my 20 years of service. Living on S/S and my retirement will not surfice if I end up paying for TFL AND Tricare Standard (my wife is only 57) so I will have to pay for both,if they get their way. It will take over a month of my retirement therefore I see bankruptcy in my future.

Even with what might come, I am still thankful for what we have. We will still have our love for each other and our 8 living children (1 dec.), 23 grand children and 5 great grand children.

Grateful for opportunity to honor the Patriot Post!

A WAR CASUALTY’S CHALLENGE TO AMERICANS!

11:15 pm, 10/16/2006, when compiling a Military Honor Roll for a Veterans’ Day Memorial Service, thoughts came as from one who gave “the last full measure of devotion” in defense of Freedom’s Cause.

Grieve not for me, I gave my all to answer Freedom’s duty call;

I shielded home and loved ones’ life from battle’s din and bloody strife.

I learned that freedom is not free; there is a price for liberty…

Eternally vigilant all must stay to keep encroaching wolves away,

Some robed in clothing of a sheep, deceiving those inclined to sleep.

And watchmen look the other way, neglecting there to watch and pray.

I gave my life for Worthy Cause, to do again I would not pause,

To stay the tide of slav’ry’s flow. To nowhere else can free men go;

In all the earth there is no place – no shelter for the human race –

No bolstered fortress to defend if in defeat this War should end.

So rise, good people, take your place, stand up for right, and by God’s grace

You’ll stem the tide, extend the Light; press back the dark of evil’s night!

I'm grateful for the existence of wisdom and the inheritance of it. It is this inheritance that we witness, manifested in the likes of Mark Alexander, and many others in the conservative ranks. This wisdom serves as our spotlight, to reveal Liberalism as it plots against morality, from the darkness of shadows. This wisdom serves as a scale of justice, with which we can measure the bankruptcy of Liberal ideas. Without wisdom, ignorance would rule, Liberalism would prevail, and destitution would result.

And I'm grateful for people like Mark and his staff, and any and all other conservative protagonists. They are our modern day Paul Reveres, sounding the warning alarm about the immoral liberal subterfuge that threatens the nation on a daily basis. They are our champions, our front line generals, leading us into battle, to save our nation, and our souls. Give us the strength to join their ranks and fight.

morning glory

I'm thankful I was born in American. I'm thankful I've never known hunger, homelessness, or oppressive despair. I'm thankful for my family, my home, my job, my personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I'm thankful for the hope that springs eternal deep within my soul. I'm thankful God provided me with a born-again spouse who loves me, pampers me, and provides for me. I am thankful for my Godly heritage. I'm thankful for the legacy left me by generations of Christians before me and the courage of American soldiers who have, are, and will fight to keep us safe. I'm thankful that when things look the darkest that I know in whom I have believed, and the hope of glory abides in our Lord Jesus Christ.

I am thankful for God's gracious gift of salvation and his Word that through study and application gives us meaning, purpose and definition for our lives.

I an thankful for my wife who is likeminded in Christ so that we may encourage one another in our growth as well as setbacks.

I am thankful to be living in a free nation with a history in freedom second to none and for the warriors who protect us

I am thankful for the Word of God that tells us that a nation remains free because of the believers in the land who continue to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ". If the believers fail the nation losese it's prosperity. This insight helps me to focus on doing whats right and not being distraught on the bad that I see (and hear. "As goes the believer, so goes the nation"

Gratitude is paramount to a happy life. Willingness to place others before self is an indication of humility. Service and sacrifice on behalf of others is virtuous. Only these will produce a society capable of understanding, preserving, and living with liberty. May the God who created this republic, preserve its character and give strength to her advocates. Blessings of gratitude and thanksgiving to all.

I am thankful for my wondrous wife, ,without whom I am nothing. I am thankful for my children, grown strong and straight. I am thankful for my Grandchildren, who's promise is so bright. I am thankful for our home, the woods around us, ,their smell on a day after the rain. I am thankful for the deer my wife & I watch each day, and the squirrels, those thieving little pirates who steal my walnuts. Most of all, I am thankful for being born into this, the greatest nation on Earth, and having been able to raise and teach my children here.

Well .... not really knowing what I was going to write, I read JB Hoffman's comment about the loving, selfless care he provided for his dear wife of 58 years. There are allot of great comments here, but, I think I will give thanks, for having been privileged to read his. Can't stop the tears from flowing. JB ... I wish you the very best this Thanksgiving . And ... as always, a stunning essay by Mark.

The rhetorical question, "Tell us for what you are thankful" is too inclusive to remember all that He has blessed upon me. The Lord's biggest blessing is something we all have received, the gift of His only Begotten Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our Savior's sacrifice assures us of an afterlife, if we can only endure to the end, LIVING His gospel.

I am blessed to live in a nation that allows me and mine to enjoy our freedom of choice. To cut short the answer, all else is simple, my family, friends and liberty. The Patriot Post helps us retain our liberty along with our troops around the world.

Mark, what a useful "maxim" to share with us - "Live third person, serving God first, others second and ourselves third" - to thwart selfishness. I intend to remind myself of your words daily - "It is in that service that we lift the veil of vanity and rediscover God's purpose for our lives." I gladly sent my support for your Year-End Campaign.

RE: GDC One native American to another. Allow me to quote you:

The Indians (Native Americans) shared their food with the Christians only to be murdered and have their land taken from them by the very Christians they saved. The Indians have no reason to celebrate Thanks Giving.

I am with you but like as I've told clan (Shining Shield Clan) that was then, this is now. You don't like Christians, I can't belittle you but we all need to learn from history and not lump all of them into one category. REMEMBER OUR 10 C0MMANDMENTS. For the rest of you, it would behoove you to follow them for they can also be found in the Bible.

Treat the Earth and all that dwell therein with respect

Remain close to the Great Spirit

Show great respect for your fellow beings

Work together for the benefit of all Mankind

Give assistance and kindness wherever needed

Do what you know to be right

Look after the well-being of Mind and Body

Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater Good

Be truthful and honest at all times

Take full responsibility for your actions

Thanks for the words to America the Beautiful. But if you want a truly thanksgiving prayer for our Nation, please see the last verse of the Star Spangled Banner. We need all the prayers we can get, and this verse is certainly a thanksgiving prayer to God, not the imperative demand that God bless America:

"O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war's desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."

Why I strayed, I will never know, but I did and lost a beautiful wife because of it. I am now miserable and alone but for you Lord, I remain alive. I pray for wisdom to now why I survive. I want to be a witness for you Lord. I know I think, my time is short on this earth but I pray for many who continue to spread your word. I include the Patrioit Post on my list. I am truly thankful that, to date, God has not treated this nation as He did Sodom and Gomorrah. Judge Robert Bork's book "Slouching Towards Gomorrah" details an alarming look at our direction. I am thankful for a loving God, who gives us grace and mercy in spite of our sins. I am very grateful to Patriot Post and other patriots who are attempting to bring this nation to its senses and back to God. Most especially I am thankful for those who are laying down their lives for us every day through the military. I'm just grateful that things are as good as they are and not as bad as they could be.

Just getting a chance to read your essay. I had a wonderful blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends. God has been good to us. What a contrast your essay, full of thanks to God, and Mr Obama's Thankgiving message this year!! His seemed to be another campaign speech and he didn't mention God one time! He said the very first Thanksgiving was a 'celebration of community'... I guess I could expect no less from a community organizer!

The first Thanksgiving proclamation issued by an American President since the days of the Founders was on 4 Sept 1862. Some time later, the northern leader emulated the practice.

*****************************************

Richmond, VA

4 Sept 1862

On the very day on which our forces were led to victory on the Plains of Manassas, in Virginia, the same Almighty arm assisted us to overcome our enemies at Richmond, in Kentucky. Thus, at one and the same time, have two great hostile armies been stricken down, and the wicked designs of their armies been set at naught.

In such circumstances, it is meet and right that, as a people, we should bow down in adoring thankfulness to that gracious God who has been our bulwark and defense, and to offer unto him the tribute of thanksgiving and praise. In his hand is the issue of all events, and to him should we, in an especial manner, ascribe the honor of this great deliverance.

Now, therefore, I, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States, do issue this, my proclamation, setting apart Thursday, the 18th day of September inst., as a day of prayer and thanksgiving to Almighty God for the great mercies vouchsafed to our people, and more especially for the triumph of our arms at Richmond and Manassas;

and I do hereby invite the people of the Confederate States to meet on that day at their respective places of public worship, and to unite in rendering thanks and praise to God for these great mercies, and to implore Him to conduct our country safely through the perils which surround us, to the final attainment of the blessings of peace and security.

Given under my hand and the seal of the Confederate States, at Richmond, this fourth day of

September, A.D.1862.

This is as fine a tribute to Christmas and the American way of life I have ever read. It touches on everything important to us all and really leaves nothing out. Without freedom ,which come from God, nothing else would matter. Without courage and the Grace of God we would have been the best nation in the world. Many have died for freesom so we could be free and many more would die for freedom rather than live under the yoke of tyranny. The Lord has see that we have the materials and the brainpower to keep our country. Do we have the courage?

Happy Thanksgiveing because of the Lord providing so much for us. Our cups truely runneth over.

I am thankful that I am a child of God, with Jesus as my Lord and Savior and thus will live with Him forever in His Heaven. And, thankful that I live in a country where I am free to worship Him wherever and whenever I choose without thought of reprisal or punishment. I still live in a country where I am free to be whatever I choose, to come and go as I please, to be successful in my chosen occupation, speak out against my government without danger of prison or death, read what books I choose, spend my earnings as I choose, be as successful as I am willing to work to be. I fervently hope that my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will have the same freedom!!

Lord, thank You for all that I have and all that I don't have. Thank You for the small things as well as the big things and thank You for giving me the gift of faith which allows me to trust in You. Let me be an instrument of Your will in this world and may we always understand that it is Your will which is to be done, not ours. Help us to live our lives according to Your plan and give us the courage and desire to help out our brothers and sisters as you have demanded us to do. And lastly, thank You for our free will, so that our love for You is not that of slaves, but rather of children who know and understand our Father in Heaven.
