On Wednesday, former FBI Director James Comey sat before the Senate Judiciary Committee via video link (thanks to COVID) and proceeded to deliver his best Sergeant Schultz performance to date. Over his nearly four hours of testimony, Comey’s most common response to questions was a complete denial of knowledge: “I know nothing about…,” “I don’t know,” “I don’t recall,” “I don’t remember,” “I only know what is in the public record,” “I can’t answer that,” and “That doesn’t ring a bell.” You get the picture.

What Comey did know was that he was “proud” of the “overall” way the FBI handled the dubious Crossfire Hurricane investigation in the Trump/Russia collusion hoax. “I think the overall investigation of the Russia interference and whether Americans were associated with it was conducted in an honest, competent, and independent way,” Comey asserted. That may be true, but only of the rank-and-file agents who serve honorably and wondered what the heck was going on with leadership in that investigation.

In a telling exchange that exposed Comey’s duplicitous nature, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) asked regarding Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s damning findings, “So, in your view, 17 mistakes and lying to the court is competent and honest?” Comey denied the charge. “I don’t believe he concluded they were lies to the court. There were significant failings with how the Carter Page FISA [application] was prepared and renewed.” Cruz then countered that FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith pleaded guilty to changing information in the FISA application, which Cruz called “a fraudulent document [that] was then used as the basis for a fraudulent submission to the FISA court.” Cruz asked, “Do you believe that is honest and competent?” Comey demurred, “I don’t believe you offered an accurate summary.”

What was gleaned from Comey’s obfuscating testimony? That he was either an incredibly incompetent FBI director or a liar, which is made all the more intolerable by his self-righteous, condescending attitude. As Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) observed, “With all due respect, you don’t seem to know anything about an investigation that you ran.”

What does Comey know? Well, he’s certain the Russians must have something significant on President Donald Trump, even after all the partisan investigations have turned up absolutely nothing. “I have never felt that way about an American president, and I don’t know whether the Russians have something over President Trump, but it’s difficult to explain his conduct, his statements, in any other way,” Comey said. He then claimed, despite evidence to the contrary, “A nation that does not have America’s best interests at heart wants to reelect Donald Trump. Let that sink in.”

The more we learn of Comey, the more it becomes evident the man is one of the worst swamp creatures Washington has produced. His self-righteous condescension aside, this is a man whose view of truth is more akin to that of a wax nose — easily twisted to comport with his own elitist preferences rather than a reflection of the facts. That he was the nation’s top law man should send a chill down everyone’s spine. No wonder Trump fired him.
