The Right Opinion
Black and White Standards
The Washington Post (10/25/2012), in giving President Barack Obama an endorsement for another four years, wrote, "Much of the 2012 presidential campaign has dwelt on the past, but the key questions are who could better lead the country during the next four years -- and, most urgently, who is likelier to put the government on a more sound financial footing." The suggestion appears to be that a president is not to be held accountable to his promises and past record and that his past record is no indication of his future behavior. Possibly, the Washington Post people believe that a black president shouldn't be held accountable to his record and campaign promises. Let's look at it.
What about Obama's pledge to cut the deficit in half during his first term in office? Instead, we saw the first trillion-dollar deficit ever, under any president of the United States. Plus, it has been followed by trillion-dollar deficits in every year of his administration. What about Obama's pledge of transparency, in which his legislative proposals would be placed on the Internet days before Congress voted on them so that Americans could inspect them? Obama's major legislative proposal, Obamacare, was enacted in such secrecy and with such speed that even members of Congress did not have time to read it. Remember that it was Rep. Nancy Pelosi who told us, "But we have to pass the (health care) bill so that you can find out what is in it." What about Obama's stimulus packages and promises to get unemployment under control? The Current Employment Statistics program shows that in 2008, the total number of U.S. jobs was more than 138 million, compared with 133.5 million today. As Stanford University economics professor Edward Lazear summed it up, "there hasn't been one day during the entire Obama presidency when as many Americans were working as on the day President Bush left office."
While Obama's national job approval rating is a little less than 50 percent, among blacks his job approval is a whopping 88 percent. I'd like to ask people who approve of Obama's performance, "What has President Obama done during the past four years that you'd like to see more of in the next four years?"
Black support of politicians who have done little or nothing for their ordinary constituents is by no means unusual. Blacks are chief executives of major cities, such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Washington, Memphis, Atlanta, Baltimore, New Orleans, Oakland, Newark, Cleveland and Cincinnati. In most of these cities, the chief of police, the superintendent of schools and other high executives are black. But in these cities, black people, like no other sector of our population, suffer from the highest rates of homicides, assaults, robberies and shootings. Black high-school dropout rates in these cities are the highest in the nation. Even if a black youngster manages to graduate from high school, his reading, writing and computational proficiency is likely to be equivalent to that of a white seventh- or eighth-grader. That's even with school budgets per student being among the highest in the nation.
Last year, in reference to President Obama's failed employment policies and high unemployment among blacks, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., who is chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said, "If Bill Clinton had been in the White House and had failed to address this problem, we probably would be marching on the White House." That's a vision that seems to explain black tolerance for failed politicians -- namely, if it's a black politician whose policies are ineffectual and possibly harmful to the masses of the black community, it's tolerable, but it's entirely unacceptable if the politician is white.
Black people would not accept excuses upon excuses and vote to re-elect decade after decade any white politician, especially a Republican politician, to office who had the failed records of our big-city mayors. What that suggests about black people is not very flattering.

Walter, another excellent column! One question, though, in the first paragraph you quote the WP editorial "...who is likelier to put the government on a more sound financial footing." This must be a mistake - wouldn't the WP mean to say "who is likelier to put the nation...?"

"What has President Obama done during the past four years that you'd like to see more of in the next four years?"
-- Well, I suppose the "free cell phone lady" would be the poster child: Obama gives "free" stuff to buy votes. The Romney plan would provide the same folks dignity through a job which would enable them to get the same "stuff", but with the fruits of their own effort.
They're obviously too blind too see for the most part. That's why we need election reform.

Walter: This is why I read your columns FIRST when I log onto the Patriot Post. Sanity. Straight shooting, even if it hurts. One could only hope that the black community as a whole would read this column with an objective eye and reflect on it. Results matter, not race.

"most urgently, who is likelier to put the government on a more sound financial footing." The fact that the WP says this with a straight 'face' while endorsing Obama is quite illustrative of how much kool-aid they've had.

When you have one generation after another of blacks on welfare it has become a way of life. We had a black tax commissner who stole over 2 million dollars from the county and when this person was caught the blacks were up in arms crying racism. Even when it was proved that the money was taken illegally they still supported the person. When folks started looking at who was not paying property taxes or were behind on their taxes it seems that most of the big-name supporters were way behind in their taxes or had paid none at all. I could cite more instances where blacks have abused their positions and everytime racism is cried. I guess in their minds stealing and cheating is alright as long its another black.

Of course it is, just as murder and other violence is largely shrugged off if they are "black-on-black" crimes, whereas a similar crime committed by a white against a black would not only be loudly denounced (as it should) but protested as a so-called "hate crime" as well.
American whites are still expected to feel guilt over slavery that was ended (by whites) 150 years ago, but current-day slavery in Africa and the Middle East is ignored since it is not being perpetuated by whites. The outcry over the situation of blacks in South Africa ended when white rule ended, although the standard of living for SA's black citizens is still poor. And were Robert Mugabe's outrages against his people being committed by a white president, the world would be in an uproar.
George W. Bush was correct when he decried the "soft bigotry of low expectations." Liberals expect little achievement and respect for law from blacks and Hispanics, and ignore assaults against Christianity committed by Muslim Arabs, because they feel that only they and their guilty white leftwing elite friends are capable of civilized, responsible, adult behavior.

Thirty years ago I was serving as an economic development officer for the city of New Haven, CT. I asked a group of black business men and women, why it was that after the previous thirty years of Democrat control of the city, and their own acknowledge personal distress caused by the anti-business policies of those Democrat administrations, that they could continue to support Democrats running for office. The looks I received in reply amounted to the same looks I might have received if I ask such questions as "Why air?" or "So what about the Sun?" Totally blank expressions!!! How dare I ask such a questions! The answer might as well have been, "Of course we only vote for Democrats! What else is there?" Totally beyond my comprehension why this stubborn reverence for a party that has marginalize an entire segment of our population for decades. As some of the other writers here have suggested; Democrats and their followers have a mental illness or are permanently adolescent. RJA

Mr. William's makes a very significant point and one difficult to understand. Why are black people so tolerant of ineffective government? Despite spending at rates 2 or 3 times that spent on the white community, the problems persist. It can only be understood as the wrong solutions. Those who think the people employed in the "Poverty Industries" have no real incentive to solve anything might just have a point. As long as there is unlimited taxpayer money to support the cronyism and corruption no solution will be found. The real question is how long will it take for the American people to get wise to the scam.

Human beings suffer from original sin, including sloth. Sloth is the choice people make between getting off their butts and burning some calories in a constructive enterprise, or sitting on their rear ends, all comfy, while welfare checks and other freebies float in. The downside of accepting the freebies and welfare is the total loss of self respect, which ultimately degrades into maintaining no standards of any kind for any reason, activity or behavior. You have to be better than the thing you are condemning, and it is hard to be better if you are the problem. As with any subsidized activity, reality takes back seat to comfort. Subsidies are a lot like virginity at college, they tend to not last very long in the control of those who see little advantage otherwise. Lyndon B. Johnson knew the weakness of humans, the general condition of blacks in the early 60s, (not wealthy, just getting by) and knew he could buy hundred of thousands of votes by giving blacks some little birthday presents, like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which has had the effect subsequently of re-enslaving blacks economically, politically, and morally. Who are you going to vote for, the guy who gives you stuff for your vote, or the guy who wants you to get off your ass and make yourself proud of your work, accomplishments, and worth? There will be no cure for the various blights suffered by blacks today until this vote buying scheme is brought to a permanent halt. Blacks will be far better off if and when they get off the dole, race relations will improve exponentially, and this country will become wealthier and more moral by a factor of five. I grew up in the deep south, and remember the 50s and very early 60s when every black between the ages of 14 and 70 worked for a living, owned their own vehicle, often owned their own house, and got along with whites in a system of mutual respect and concern. LBJ and the democrats killed that relationship, that black pride in constructive endeavors, and now we have huge crime, huge hopelessness, and the worst race relations this country has ever had, including during slavery. The Democratic party and all its members are the new slave owners, and have enslaved probably 90-95% of the blacks in this country. The blacks must correct this themselves. How? By refusing to vote Democratic in exchange for the freebie trinkets the democrats hand out.

The white people think they are so much better than any other race, why is that? Maybe this is all you know, since you've never had to experience hardship, words of discouragement or just dirt. God will judge you people because of this!

Double standards, really???????????? Nothing to see here, move along. It is so sad to see and read this. I ask myself, as a white male, how can this happen? Isn't there a potential Pulitzer Prize winning journalist out there, who could write about all those failed cities and school districts, and like Eric Holder say, " We have been too afraid to talk about Race." Oh, I am sorry, then that would be considered Racist. The plantation system continues, it just isn't in the fields anymore. It's in the inner cities of America, and only just a few blocks from Obama's Washington address. Where do Obama's kids go to school, I forget. I hope it isn't on a voucher system.

To Bo from Texas, Excellent commentary. I agree entirely. Voter extortion for a few crumbs off the table of welfare, food stamps, and all the other supposedly helpful handouts from the Democrats. There appear to be no mirrors in this sad state of entitlement thinking. Just like Obama, it isn't my fault, blame someone else. Deep down inside, one knows if one is being a lazy slug living off the system. They internally rationalize it, blaming the man or the system. But, they know deep down, it is their own lazy fault. So in displaced anger, they take it out on other people through drugs, violence, out of wedlock children etc. It is a self-perpetuating tragedy.
