Dueling Distractions

Just before he left for vacation, President Obama invited the GOP to commit political suicide, urging the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to get behind the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill. “There are a few differences here and there, but the truth of the matter is that the Senate bill has the main components of comprehensive immigration reform that would boost our economy, give us an opportunity to attract more investment and high-skilled workers who are doing great things in places like Silicon Valley and around the country,” Obama said. “So let’s go ahead and get that done.”

Just before he left for vacation, President Obama invited the GOP to commit political suicide, urging the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to get behind the Senate’s comprehensive immigration reform bill. "There are a few differences here and there, but the truth of the matter is that the Senate bill has the main components of comprehensive immigration reform that would boost our economy, give us an opportunity to attract more investment and high-skilled workers who are doing great things in places like Silicon Valley and around the country,“ Obama said. "So let’s go ahead and get that done.”

Yes sir, let’s get that done. Let’s take the focus off ObamaCare, with all its attendant failures, and the outright lawlessness of administration that unilaterally changes the parameters of its “signature achievement” whenever it feels like it. Let’s “boost our economy” by adding 11 million low-skill, under-educated worker to a workforce where the participation rate is already at its lowest level since 1978, and more than 91 million Americans have dropped out of the labor force altogether. Let’s have even more people competing for the low-paying, part-time jobs that comprised 75 percent of the total number created for the entire year.

What could possibly go wrong?

And though I hate to keep repeating myself, how do we know we’re talking about 11 million illegal aliens, and not 20 million, or 30 million? Because the media says so? That would be the same media that as recently as last Wednesday admitted that they have a liberal bias. The same media that characterized the out-and-out lie Obama told the nation – over 30 times – as "something that was wrongly stated with good intentions, in this case perhaps, to make the complicated simple for public consumption" as the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette insisted, or an “incorrect promise,” as the New York Times declared.

I’m betting the reality that there might be far more illegal aliens making a mockery of the rule of law than currently acknowledged would “complicate” the hell out of the immigration debate. At the same time, there isn’t a shred of doubt in my mind that the American left would more than willingly tell the public a “noble lie” to further their agenda. When the only rule for implementing one’s ideology is “by any means necessary,” the first casualty is the truth.

Americans are now well aware of the reality that ObamaCare was built on a litany of misrepresentations, half-truths and outright lies by an administration that routinely kicks the Constitution to the curb, the most egregious manifestation of which is to eliminate Congress from the loop wherever it deems fit. They also know there are legions of useful media idiots who will defend this overt corruption every scurrilous step of the way, even as they sacrifice whatever remnants of decency and integrity they had left to do so. So let’s do a little mental exercise and substitute the words “comprehensive immigration reform” for the word “ObamaCare” and ask the simplest of questions:

How many dim-bulbs in the Republican party actually believe an administration that has made selective law enforcement its primary method of governance, wouldn’t engage in the exact same cherry-picking when it comes to comprehensive immigration reform?

“I think that John Boehner will conference with the Senate," said Harry Reid in interview with The Hill. "Why wouldn’t he? He’ll have a lot of pressure from his members now that the election is getting closer. Some of his members are in very marginal districts where they need to do something on immigration.”

Really? Like what? Alienate the same core constituency that stayed home on election night in 2012 ,when Milquetoast Mitt couldn’t dislodge an administration mired in scandal, even as it presided over the weakest economic recovery since WW2? Take a stone cold winning issue like the failure of ObamaCare and bury it under the folly of accommodating the same people who have made an utter mockery of the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act? That bill granted outright amnesty to 2.7 million illegals, in exchange for a crackdown on businesses who hired them, and strict border control.

Today, more than four times the number of illegals (at least) are demanding to be accommodated, the Chamber of Commerce is squarely behind the newest effort, and the border remains a sieve – to the point where Border Agents have allegedly been ordered to stand down. "It doesn’t matter whether it’s drugs, bodies, or how large the group is, our agents are being ordered to stand down by Border Patrol management,“ said Shawn Moran, Vice President of the National Border Patrol Council. "I have received reports from our agents in every single sector from San Diego to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas that they are receiving these orders.”

And there are actually Republicans who think comprehensive immigration reform is a winning issue for their side?

The GOP has definitely earned its “Stupid Party” nickname, but are they really that stupid? Some of them undoubtedly are. But what this particular issue reveals is far more disturbing. It reveals that when there’s a choice to be made between standing with the American public and standing with their fellow Washington elitists in the Democrat party, there’s really no choice to be made at all. It’s the Ruling Class and its progressive-dominated agenda first, and the American public last. You give us cheap votes, we give you cheap labor, we dress it up for media consumption and it’s done, done and done.

These elitists would like us to forget that in 2006 – when the economy was still booming – it was the uproar from the American public that derailed comprehensive immigration reform the last time it was foisted upon us. Their media allies are doing their damnedest to convince us that the public has undergone a sea change since then. Yet if you look at an actual Gallup poll on the issue, you’ll see that Americans overwhelmingly support the provisions contained in the 1986 law, as well as reforming legal immigration, and the chance for illegals to get on some pathway to residence or citizenship after they’ve met certain conditions.

Bet the farm that one of those conditions is getting to the back of the line behind those who legally endeavored to enter our nation and follow our laws. Put an equal amount of money down on the idea that those who have committed additional crimes on top of being here illegally, are persona non grata – period.

Naturally, you won’t hear about any of that. What you’ll hear is what a boon it will be when millions of illegal aliens “come out of the shadows” and take their “rightful” place in American society. You’ll hear all sorts of promises regarding business crackdowns, border security, etc, etc. And every one of them will be  as sincere and truthful as this:

“So let me begin by saying this to you and to the American people: I know that there are millions of Americans who are content with their health care coverage – they like their plan and, most importantly, they value their relationship with their doctor. They trust you. And that means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what. My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: Fix what’s broken and build on what works. And that’s what we intend to do.” –Barack Obama, June 15, 2009.

Like I said, substitute “comprehensive immigration reform” for “ObamaCare.” For the “most transparent administration in history” it doesn’t get any more transparent than that.
