First things first: There’s no truth to the rumor that young Kamala Harris shot up through the ranks at McDonald’s thanks to a romantic relationship with her supervisor.

Contrary to The Babylon Bee’s normally spot-on sleuthing, they’ve conflated San Francisco and Willie Brown with McDonald’s and Mayor McCheese.

Sarcasm aside, nor, it seems, is there any truth to the rumor that Harris ever worked at McDonald’s at all. As The Washington Free Beacon reports:

Harris’s work at McDonald’s, which allegedly took place at a franchise in the California Bay Area the summer after her freshman year in college, is a recent addition to her carefully curated life story. For decades, Harris never mentioned it, not on the campaign trail nor in two books. It’s absent from a job application and résumé she submitted a year after she graduated from college. Third-party biographers did not write about it. Not until Harris ran for president in 2019 and spoke to a labor rally in Las Vegas did she mention the job.

Why on earth, you ask, are we wasting our time on such a triviality? It’s a good question. And the answer is simple: Because it’s a little lie that reveals big things — namely, that hard-left Democrats from radical backgrounds will go to great lengths to impress upon the American people that the opposite is true.

Remember, Kamala Harris is a Bay Area progressive of Jamaican-Indian descent who grew up in Canada and whose ancestors were slaveowners. And like Barack Obama before her, she grew up in a single-parent home in which the absentee father was too busy being a Marxist to bother with his duties as a dad. Low-information Democrats might be blissfully unaware or unconcerned about her radicalism, but history has shown us what happens to our nation when we allow ourselves to be beguiled by a phony narrative.

Remember how they sold Barack Obama to us? Take a look at his White House bio: “His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.”

Values from the heartland? A middle-class upbringing in a strong family?

We can scoff all we want, but it worked.

Given Harris’s equally radical upbringing, she and her propagandists have been very busy of late fabricating her Middle America bona fides by trotting out a new TV ad that begins, “She grew up in a middle-class home. She was the daughter of a working mom. And she worked at McDonald’s while she got her degree.”

The language of her ad sounds eerily like the Obama ads of yore — the ones that told us he hailed from Middle America, from some small town in Kansas, rather than from Hawaii by way of Indonesia. The former sounds quintessentially American, while the latter sounds, to use a word that Harris’s VP nominee, Tim Walz, seems fond of throwing out at Republicans, weird.

Similarly, Harris’s upbringing is also weird, though increasingly common in Democrat circles: like Obama, she’s the product of a “working” mom and a deadbeat dad. In other words, a broken home.

The McDonald’s thing is meant to endear Harris to everyday Americans. But it sounds like it might be a big fat lie. Republicans should be mindful of running this story into a birth certificate-type trap. But this seems like it’d be easy to verify.

As the Free Beacon adds: “It is possible that Harris did indeed work at McDonald’s in the early 1980s. But the absence of that detail in public records and her campaign’s coyness and refusal to provide any further details raise questions about what is now a foundational narrative. … The job goes unmentioned in both of her memoirs, published in July 2010 and January 2019. … Two biographies written about Harris make no mention of the job, either. A 2021 memoir by Stacey Johnson-Batiste, Harris’s lifelong friend who grew up with her in California, does not mention McDonald’s anywhere in the text. Dan Morain, who authored ‘Kamala’s Way: An American Life,’ told the Free Beacon he was ‘not aware’ of her job at McDonald’s.”

Again, this might seem like a little lie, but it would say something big about Harris’s character.
