Another preventable tragedy recently occurred in the city of Chicago, where an illegal alien from Venezuela attacked and murdered in cold blood an 18-year-old Loyola University student.

Sheridan Gorman, originally from Yorktown, New York — a town steeped in Revolutionary War history — was a bright and hopeful freshman studying business in one of the largest financial hubs in the U.S. She was also a member of the college Christian organization Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ).

In short, Gorman was a young lady full of life and promise, trying to enjoy life in a big city.

In the early morning hours of March 19, Gorman and her friends were walking out to the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach, just north of Loyola’s Rogers Park campus, to see the northern lights and take a picture of the Chicago skyline.

Gorman and company had a reasonable expectation of safety in this area. It’s on the north side of Chicago, after all. Nevertheless, the group was approached at the end of the pier by a masked gun-wielding man. The assailant then shot and killed Gorman as she was running away.

On Saturday, a young man, Jose Medina-Medina, was arrested in connection with the murder. Medina is an illegal alien from Venezuela who was let into the country in May 2023 by the Biden administration. Within a month, he entered Chicago. We know this because he was arrested for shoplifting at a Macy’s on State Street in June 2023.

Not only was Medina facing a misdemeanor charge, but there was also a warrant out for his arrest — one that is apparently still outstanding. Great job, Chicago.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times:

Video captured Medina walking from the beach into a building in the 6800 block of North Sheridan Road, according to an arrest report. He wore all black clothing and a mask and had a “distinct gait.”

Police recovered black clothing and a .40 caliber handgun inside Medina’s apartment, prosecutors said. The gun matched the shell casing found at the shooting scene.

Is the mainstream media reporting on this incident? Not really. ABC, CBS, and NBC have devoted only a scant couple of minutes to the story.

Why are they avoiding it? Because this senseless murder is Laken Riley 2.0. Gorman was an innocent college student killed by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, just like Riley.

Remember, Venezuela literally emptied its prisons and sent them our direction during the Joe Biden years because of his open-border policies. Venezuela’s thuggish and illegitimate president, Nicolás Maduro — whom President Donald Trump had the guts to apprehend earlier this year — was hoping to inflict mass chaos on the U.S. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas let that chaos happen while the media helped gaslight the country into believing the border was secure.

The Leftmedia is clinging to testimony from one of Gorman’s friends to spin it into a narrative. “It didn’t seem like it was intentionally targeted toward any of us,” that friend said. “It seemed like he was there for a reason, and we were just [in the] wrong place, wrong time. I’m guessing, because there was not another shot after that. It was just one.”

“Wrong place, wrong time” is what the headlines read, yet Gorman and her friends were in a place where they had a reasonable expectation of safety. The only person who was at the “wrong place, wrong time” was Medina. He shouldn’t have been in our country in the first place.

Some Democrats will admit this. For example, Chicago Alderman Ray Lopez correctly observed that this horrific killing was “100% avoidable.” He went on to explain, “All immigrants are not like this individual. Many, overwhelmingly, want to be good future Americans. But when we have individuals like Jose Medina-Medina, who don’t care about assimilating, don’t care about our customs, and don’t care about American human life, then they must be dealt with in a very specific and unalterable way.”

Perhaps mass deportations courtesy of ICE?

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman posted this in response to Gorman’s heinous murder: “As a father, I grieve for Sheridan’s parents for this unspeakable tragedy. This was a failure of not holding criminal migrants accountable and not protecting the public — and another tragic reason why I was the Dem lead on the Laken Riley law.”

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, on the other hand, decided to — you guessed it — blame President Donald Trump. A statement from Pritzker’s office admonished, “The Trump Administration needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts.”

Note: Illinois is a sanctuary state.

Violence has a deep-seated tradition in Chicago — and it’s because Democrat leaders don’t actually care. Gangbangers kill each other along with innocent people on a regular basis. Giving Democrats more money to fix a problem they have no intention of actually fixing is not a solution. Pritzker personifies all the leftist clichés rolled into one: Blame Trump and give us more money!

Unfortunately, Sheridan Gorman’s death is a matter of poor policy. Her parents realize this, declaring in a statement:

When systems fail — whether through release decisions, lack of coordination, or unwillingness to act — the consequences are not abstract. They are real. And in our case, they are permanent. This case must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of both state and federal law. There can be no gaps, no shortcuts, and no second chances that put others at risk. Accountability must be complete.

What a heartbreaking ordeal. Please lift the Gorman family up in prayer.
