The Patriot Post® · Why Disarming Cops Is a Bad Idea
MSNBC’s Ed Schultz recently entertained the idea of disarming law enforcement in order to eradicate police officer-involved shootings. “[T]here are places on the face of this earth that there are police officers that don’t carry firearms,” he pointed out. The idea is preposterous for a myriad of reasons, including the old adage to never bring a knife to a gun fight. America was reminded of this last week when police officers in Ferguson, Missouri, were ambushed by Jeffrey Williams, a 20-year-old male who presumably sought to avenge the deaths of fellow blacks at the hands of policemen. Williams was apprehended over the weekend by armed police personnel, not officers “carry[ing] nightsticks [with] the authority to arrest,” which is what Mr. Schultz endorses. Otherwise, the assailant might still be roaming the streets with additional police casualties on his watch. Given this, would Mr. Schultz care to revise his statement? Probably not, because, in the minds of intellectual elitists, reforming our cultural deformities will perpetually be less important than advancing agenda-laden talking points. In reality, ceding common sense to political expediency is far more dangerous than any perceived racial animosity.
