In 2014, Hollywood released the inspirational hit movie “Unbroken.” The film, directed by Angelina Jolie and based upon a book of the same name, told the compelling and true life story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete and World War II vet. However, the film stopped short of telling Zamperini’s whole story. At the time of the movie’s release, evangelist Franklin Graham, whose father, the late Billy Graham, played an important role in Zamperini’s life, observed that the film had left out the “most important part of the book” — where Zamperini recounts his return home and his coming to faith in Jesus Christ in 1949.

Well, this weekend the rest of Zamperini’s story is hitting theaters. The movie, titled “Unbroken: Path to Redemption,” picks up right where the first movie left off. This film tells how Zamperini met his wife, sought to return to compete in the Olympic games, and struggled with PTSD, eventually leading to him becoming a Christian.

Zamperini’s son Luke, who is this film’s executive producer, explained, “This film explores [my parents] struggles with [dad’s] demons. His PTSD was manifested by these horrendous nightmares that began while he was still in the prison camp.” Zamperini noted that the film depicts how his father was saved from his self-destruction through an epiphany of faith, and was then able to forgive his abusive Japanese captors.

It is refreshing that a different studio, director, and cast were willing to produce a movie that tells the rest of Zamperini’s incredible story.
