“Our obligations to our country never cease but with our lives.” —John Adams

Patriots, today is the 151st anniversary of the first Decorations Day, now Memorial Day remembrance, when Congressman (and later President) James Garfield addressed more than 5,000 families of fallen military personnel at Arlington Cemetery. We set aside Memorial Day to honor the service and sacrifice of generations of our Armed Forces Patriots who perished in battle (and more broadly all Veterans now departed) — those who “supported and defended” with honor the American Liberty enshrined in our Constitution.

As I contemplate the current state of national patriotism on this Memorial Day, I would offer this advice to those who genuinely want to demonstrate their gratitude to all those who gave the last full measure and paid the highest price for the Liberty we enjoy, and to likewise thank active duty and veteran military service personnel for our freedom, which they have and continue to defend at great cost: Strive to be, first and foremost, American citizens worthy of their sacrifice.

To that end, I invite you to read our tribute to fallen American Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen.

On Memorial Day, flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, your local time. Please join Patriots honoring veterans across our great nation by observing a moment of silence at 3:00 p.m. local time for remembrance and prayer. Finally, extend a personal word of gratitude and comfort to surviving family members who grieve for a beloved warrior.

NOTE: Our office will be closed Monday, May 27th in observance of Memorial Day. The Digest and Snapshot will resume publication on Tuesday, May 28th.
