One of the Left’s primary attacks against conservatives and Republicans is to assert without any evidence — actually, often with evidence to the contrary — that their actions and policies amount to a threat against democracy. The charge is as hyperbolic as it is backwards, but that doesn’t stop Democrats and Leftmedia pundits from regularly voicing the asinine claim.

Yesterday’s vote by House GOP members to oust Liz Cheney from her third-ranking leadership position provided yet another opportunity for leftists to run to their fainting couches, dubiously insisting that Republicans are an “existential threat to democracy.”

As we have previously noted, Cheney sealed her own fate with her refusal to back off countering Donald Trump’s claims about a stolen election, as well as her continued vehement and vocal opposition to Trump himself. She frustrated a majority of House Republicans who recognize that Trump is still a major leader in the party and who want a unified focus on countering Joe Biden and the Democrats’ radical agenda, not relitigating the 2020 election.

Interestingly, on the issue of the election, Cheney and Trump are a lot alike in being strident in their positions. Trump is strident in his certainty that without massive voting fraud he would have won. Cheney is equally strident in her certainty that there was no significant voter fraud (despite legitimate questions over states dubiously changing voting rules that allowed for massive and ill-regulated mail-in voting). She insists any questioning of the election results is tantamount to “spreading destructive lies.” It’s the “my way or the highway” challenge, and unfortunately for Cheney, Trump has a much larger group of supporters.

Retired Navy Seal and Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw, who has been sidelined from the House for several weeks due to medical procedures on his one good eye, weighed in on the issue by bemoaning the Republican division. “I’m very grateful to be outside that particular drama because it is just drama. It is all self-imposed drama, it is self-imposed division. Frankly, I’m sick of it. It is the only way that we lose in [2022] and the presidency in [2024]. The only way we lose is this BS, self-imposed drama.” He added, “There’s both sides of it, OK, it comes from the Trump loyalists, and it comes from the anti-Trumpers, and I don’t believe that I’m in either category. I’m not part of this undying loyalty cult to Trump, and I’m certainly not part of some anti-Trump cult either.”

However frustrating the GOP division might be to conservatives, those most “upset” by Cheney’s ouster were the aforementioned Democrats and Leftmedia. The Washington Post laughably implied that Cheney was a victim of “cancel culture.” Does the paper even know what that term means? As Stephen Kruiser at PJ Media observed, “She wasn’t canceled. She didn’t lose her job, she merely lost her management position because she let her colleagues know in no uncertain terms that she’s in this for herself. Be a team player if you want to be in charge.”

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki responded to the news by repeating the “democracy is under threat” trope: “Our democracy was attacked and six people lost their lives. It’s disturbing to see any leader, regardless of party, being attacked for simply speaking the truth.” Wait, who’s interested in “speaking the truth”? Certainly not Psaki with her false inference that it was Capitol rioters who were responsible for those six deaths, when in fact the only individual to have been killed in direct connection to the riot, Ashli Babbitt, was shot dead by a still-anonymous Capitol Police officer. Even Psaki’s “facts” are tainted with lies.

Finally, leave it to CNN for the most over-the-top comment. Dana Bash, the news channel’s chief political correspondent, claimed, “This is existential, not just for the GOP; it is existential for democracy. This country needs a viable, two-party political system, at least, to exist, and that is on the brink and in danger of collapsing.” Funny given CNN’s tireless work for 40 years to destroy the GOP.

The reaction by Democrats and the Leftmedia serves to reassure Republicans that ousting Cheney was the right move. Herding cats ain’t easy, but it’s the challenge GOP leadership always faces because, unlike goose-stepping Democrats, Republicans are generally committed to individual opinions and Liberty.
