Joe Biden’s immigration crisis recently came under scrutiny thanks to the thousands of Haitian migrants camped under a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. The shocking scene served as a public demonstration of the reality of Biden’s malfeasant immigration policy, which amounts to de facto open borders, no matter how repeatedly Biden or his handlers insist otherwise.

Seeming to confirm this reality, Barack Obama weighed in: “We’re a nation-state. We have borders. The idea that we can just have open borders is something that … as a practical matter is unsustainable.” That term “unsustainable” was the exact same one recently used by Biden’s own Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas when he was caught speaking off the record after touring the U.S. southern border.

No wonder ABC News cut that “open borders” part from the televised interview.

So, was Obama — the same man who warned a fellow Democrat back in 2020, “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f*** things up” — simply throwing shade at Biden in an effort to distance himself from his former vice president, whose approval rating is tanking? Not at all.

The fact of the matter is that the current border crisis is as much Obama’s as it is Biden’s. Obama might even be more to blame than Biden. Donald Trump’s border policies were primarily to reverse Obama’s. By reversing those reversals, Biden has simply acted to reestablish his former boss’s border and immigration policy.

Let’s take a trip even further down memory lane. Back in 2006, Senate Democrats including Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Barack Obama all voted in favor of the Secure Fence Act, a bill that secured funding for the construction of 700 miles of fencing along the U.S. southern border. The purpose of the border fencing was explicitly to stem illegal immigration.

So, what changed? How did Democrats move from being pro-border wall to becoming so anti-border wall that they treat law enforcement as some kind of inhumane crime? The answer is Obama. During his presidency, Obama recalibrated the Democrats’ policy on illegal immigration. He changed the discourse on immigration and border security from a law-and-order issue to a humanitarian one. Adhering to the wishes of globalist ideologues, Obama reframed the debate by calling for comprehensive immigration reform, which was simply code for the full legalization of illegal immigrants.

Fast-forward to the present, and Obama is playing the same game. The rest of his comments bare this out. “Immigration is tough,” he says. “It always has been because, on the one hand, I think we are naturally a people that wants to help others. And we see tragedy and hardship and families that are desperately trying to get here so that their kids are safe, and they’re in some cases fleeing violence or catastrophe.” Obama set up his moral imperative argument, with the implication being, America has an obligation to accept these migrants lock, stock, and barrel.

He then gets to the real motivation for acknowledging that the situation is a mess: “The question is now: Are we gonna get serious about dealing with this problem in a systemic way, as opposed to these one-offs where we’re constantly reacting to emergencies? And I think that’s something that every American should wanna put an end to.” The “systemic way” is, of course, legalization and full citizenship rights, the end goal of which is to produce more Democrat voters.
