Here’s a brief history of the Democrat response to the coronavirus:

  • Walk the busy city streets telling us there’s nothing to worry about

  • Downplay the idea of masks

  • Lockdown the country for “15 days to flatten the curve”

  • Refuse or delay every attempt to reopen

  • Mandate masks everywhere, even outdoors where the virus doesn’t spread

  • Mock and sow doubt about the vaccines simply because Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed played into their development

  • Blame the president for every COVID death

  • Use all the mayhem Democrats caused to defeat Donald Trump in 2020

  • Claim credit for Trump’s vaccines

  • Cajole and shame people before eventually mandating that everyone get the vaccines they politicized a few months earlier

  • Censor and ban unapproved discussion about the vaccines or forms of treatment

  • Require masks for the vaccinated even after saying vaccination was the way out of the pandemic

  • Lie about the pandemic being one of the unvaccinated

  • Suddenly learn that cloth and surgical masks do next to nothing, but stand by them anyway

  • Absolve the president of any blame for a single COVID death

Do you sense a pattern? We sure do — Democrats say or do whatever they think politically benefits them. This long ago stopped being about anyone’s health or legitimate science.

The latest from the Biden administration is what Fox News medical correspondent Marc Siegel, M.D., calls “Operation Snail Speed,” which he says “is not bringing us either therapeutics or tests in a timely enough manner to fight omicron.”

He’s talking about the administration’s slow and inadequate effort to focus on treating rather than preventing COVID. Last March, Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion economic “stimulus” package meant to provide money for COVID relief. Yet The Wall Street Journal editorial board notes that “less than 1% of the spending was allocated for therapies.” The result, the Journal says, is “persistent treatment shortage and countless preventable deaths.”

This week, says the Journal, the administration “ordered another 600,000 doses of GlaxoSmithKline and Vir Biotechnology’s monoclonal antibody,” and a week ago “it increased its order of Pfizer’s antiviral Paxlovid by 10 million.” Last summer, the administration ordered 1.7 million doses of Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics’ antiviral molnupiravir before increasing that to 3.1 million in November. It has refused or minimized other treatments, such as GSK-Vir’s monoclonal that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis went around the administration to order for his own state.

With high numbers of cases and hospitalizations, why is the administration so stubbornly focused on forcing vaccinations rather than working for treatments? Omicron has proved to evade vaccination — even after a third shot — more readily than other strains, though infection tends to be far more mild than the Delta variant last summer. Why not focus on treatment? Why not give natural immunity its due?

Go back and read the list at the top of this article. Treatment and natural immunity don’t boost Democrats politically.

The Journal’s editors put it this way: “Had the Administration ordered more treatments sooner, more would have been available this winter. The Trump Administration’s Operation Warp Speed accelerated vaccine development and production by placing advance orders so a supply would be available as soon as the FDA approved a vaccine. President Biden could have done the same for treatments but didn’t. Instead, the Administration has focused relentlessly on masking, testing and vaccines with therapies as a fourth priority.”

Joe Biden has failed his own test. Americans shouldn’t have to rely on a president or his administration for our health, but presidents do play a big role in modern life. Regardless, we should learn to live with an endemic virus.
