Evidently, no lessons were learned from previous school attacks. Following the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, that was the conclusion of a father of a victim of the 2018 school attack in Parkland, Florida. Andrew Pollack, whose daughter, Meadow, was killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, said that this most recent atrocity was “avoidable.”

Pollack called on parents to “go to their local school districts, get involved, see who’s on their school boards, and see if they’re taking school safety seriously.” He added, “There’s no reason in 2022 to send your child to a school that doesn’t take this school safety serious[ly].”

In Fairfax, Virginia, parents at a recent school board meeting expressed frustration with the lack of greater security in their district’s schools. “I absolutely think that we have to have more security at school,” stated a member of the parents group Virginia Mavens. “We have banks, we have large corporations, our very own members of Congress have armed guards, we have police officers on guard protecting them. Why not our children?”

Another Fairfax parent agreed: “Having that armed presence that knows the building, knows the population, knows the lay of the land, is invaluable.”

While politicians express their angst and anti-gun groups lobby these same politicians to pass laws further infringing on Americans’ Second Amendment rights, practical solutions aimed at defending schools from these attacks are seemingly considered as only secondary solutions at best. “I know there’s been conversation about hardening schools,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “That is not something [President Joe Biden] believes in.” Maybe that’s because Biden is busy “believing” in other nonsense like firing guns into the air or through closed doors and spouting baloney about 9mm guns.

Simply put, it’s hardly politically expedient to call on schools to implement systems of armed security, but it is practically the best immediate response.

Schools need to be turned into hardened targets to deter these loose canons. As the old adage states, it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun. While it may seem overwrought to post armed security guards at schools, the reality of this world is that evil exists and evil people will seek to take advantage of the defenseless.

The source of the evil is ultimately in the hearts of those who would seek to murder the innocent, so attempting to blame it on access to guns — as if the mere existence of firearms caused this evil — is to embrace a falsehood. Thwarting these evil individuals’ access to schools via armed security is a much more feasible and justifiable action than banning certain firearms.
