The Patriot Post® · Should Wray Resign?

FBI Director Christopher Wray needs to go.

At least that seems to be the sentiment among a growing group of deeply frustrated agents. As Fox News reports, “An attorney representing FBI whistleblowers reportedly said some agents are calling for Director Christopher Wray to be ousted amid criticism of the Mar-a-Lago raid and the bureau’s handling of the Hunter Biden investigation.”

We can certainly empathize, given the gravity of what these truth-tellers have revealed to Republican lawmakers. Earlier this week, hyper-partisan agent Timothy Thibault was finally shown the door. But do we really want Chris Wray’s resignation?

No, actually, we don’t. Bear with us.

Let’s stipulate first that if putting Anthony Fauci in charge of the nation’s COVID response was Donald Trump’s worst personnel decision, then promoting Chris Wray rather than bringing in a reformer from outside the bureau was his second-worst decision. But if Wray goes, then Joe Biden Susan Rice and Barack Obama get to appoint his replacement. And given that the FBI director serves for a 10-year term, we’d be stuck with a hard leftist in this vital post until at least 2032. That’s a long time. That’d take us to the end of Ron DeSantis’s second term as president, or the end of his first, depending on whether Trump runs and wins that second term — the term that was unceremoniously snatched from him in The Irrefutably Rigged Presidential Election of 2020.

It’s fair to wonder how much worse a straight-up leftist would be than Wray, who’s a Trump-hating Bush-appointed Comey “Republican.” And it doesn’t get much worse than helping to rig a presidential election — which is precisely what it appears the FBI did under Wray with its efforts to suppress the Hunter Biden story on social media.

And maybe we’ve missed it, but we don’t recall hearing a peep about reform from Wray. More than 20 whistleblowers have come forward in recent weeks, and we’ve heard zero vows for reform from the director. Whiskey Tango…

Further, when Wray gets in front of Republican senators, he’s pure smarm. He’s Claude Rains. He’s Captain Renault. He’s shocked — SHOCKED — to learn that there’s gambling going on in Rick’s Café. In that respect, Wray seems worse than a Democrat. Because we actually expect something from Wray. We actually expect him to uphold Rule of Law. And that’s no doubt why he’s been so disappointing. We’d expect bias and corruption from a leftist director, but not from a guy who calls himself a Republican.

On June 7, 2017, Trump announced his appointment of Wray to succeed the disgraced James Comey. In doing so, Trump called Wray “a man of impeccable credentials.”

If we’ve learned anything these past few years, though — and especially these past few weeks, as one whistleblower after another beats a path to the offices of Congressman Jim Jordan and Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson — it’s that Wray’s once impeccable credentials are now thoroughly, well, peccable.

Still, he’s the devil we know. And a hard-left social justice warrior with a 10-year hunting license would be immeasurably worse.

The FBI is rotten at the top, up there on the seventh floor of the J. Edgar Hoover Building. We know it to be true. We need to hold their feet to the fire — but we need to be careful what we wish for.
