Count Your Blessings

"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." --Thomas Paine

We call the primary gathering place in our home "the warm room" because at its center hearth is a woodstove. This room is where we gather in the evening after the day's tasks and our family dinner.

This past Sunday night, my family surrounded me in our warm room, each of us doing something that we enjoy. I was reading, my wife was checking e-mail, and my oldest son was bantering with my daughter while their little brother was assembling his latest Lego creation.

It was the first day of Thanksgiving week, but giving thanks was not really on my mind. I was content just to relax with my family after a good meal.

Then my cell phone chimed. I was piqued by the interruption, mostly in anticipation that when that phone rings on a Sunday night, there's usually something seriously wrong somewhere that requires my attention.

To my pleasant surprise, when I answered, a familiar voice, although faint due to the satellite connection, was on the other end. It was an Air Force friend stationed in Bagram, in the Parwan province of Afghanistan, calling to say hello and provide an update on his status.

Needless to say, he is far away from his family, who will be without him for Thanksgiving and probably Christmas. And yes, his call prompted immediate gratitude on my part for the casual and cozy evening that I was enjoying, with my family, in the comfort of our home.

The next morning, I returned from a meeting to my SUV, parked on a city street, and found in the dust between the Navy Jack on the rear window and the "Support Our Troops" magnet on the bumper, someone had scrawled, "World Peace!" I am quite sure that the author was misguidedly implying some contradiction between pride in our military forces and achievement of world peace.

Undoubtedly, the poor soul who soiled his pinkie to leave that message has never taken an oath to support and defend our Constitution, much less undertaken any action to that end at risk of personal injury or death. Thus, what this anonymous peacenik fails to realize is that nobody wants world peace more than our front-line soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines -- the very warriors fighting for that peace.

I am grateful for our uniformed Patriots, who, like my friend in Bagram, are defending liberty in places far away, so that we may live in peace at home, and I am grateful for their families, who bear a great burden with their loved one's absence.

But, as I contemplate our national day of Thanksgiving, beyond gratitude for my immediate blessings, I am greatly concerned about the trials that we, as a people, now face in the wake of the most recent, and unprecedented assault upon our Constitution. For I am certain that the resulting collectivist government policies, left unchecked, will smother our free market system and our legacy of liberty.

You know the story of our First Thanksgiving, the three-day Pilgrim feast of 1621, after nearly half their company had died during the preceding winter. (I have posted an Account of the First Harvest Feast and Thanksgiving for those of you might like to read it to your families before the Thanksgiving meal.)

What you may not know, however, is that, in an effort to improve production at Plymouth Plantation, a collectivist policy was implemented in 1622 which almost destroyed the remainder of the settlement.

Plymouth Colony's governor, William Bradford, recorded in his history of the Colony that, to forestall another failed crop season, he would allot each family a plot of land, and mandate that "all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" must be forfeited to a common storehouse in order that "all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock."

In theory, Bradford believed that this would be good for the Colony since each family would receive equal share of produce without regard to their contribution.

Unfortunately, then as now, collectivism works only in theory.

Bradford wrote that his plan failed because it undermined the incentive to produce, noting that it "was found to breed much confusion and discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort."

After the abysmal results in 1622, Bradford wrote that the Colony leaders contemplated "how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop."

They then decided to trade their collectivist plan for a free market approach, and in 1623, Bradford wrote, "This had very good success, for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been by any other means the Governor or any other could use. ... Instead of famine now God gave them plenty and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many. ... Any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day."

As a direct consequence, the Colony celebrated a much greater Day of Thanksgiving in 1623.

The conclusion was obvious. Given liberty and incentive to be industrious, their Colony thrived. Indeed, by 1624, production was so abundant that the Colony exported corn back to England.

And for generations since, to the extent that men have been set at perfect liberty to establish free markets, to produce goods and services without having profits seized for redistribution, our nation has thrived.

Yet once again, our governors are implementing collectivist policies of the sort that failed in 1622 and have failed many times since, giving credence to the aphorism, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

My fellow Patriots, never in the history of our country has there been such an acute, coordinated and vicious assault upon our rights and upon the structures established to protect those rights. From individuals, to state governments, to federal institutions initiated at the dawn of our Constitution, nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is sacred to the leftists currently controlling our nation's capital.

But take heart, for as George Washington wrote in the darkest days of our American Revolution, "We should never despair, our Situation before has been unpromising and has changed for the better, so I trust, it will again. If new difficulties arise, we must only put forth new Exertions and proportion our Efforts to the exigency of the times."

Of such exertions, Washington wrote, "It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favors."

So it is that on Thanksgiving Day of this week, we are called upon to pause and take respite; to acknowledge the divine intervention of our Creator in the affairs of this great nation; to recommit ourselves to obeisance of His will; to express our gratitude and give Him all thanks and praise for the bounty which He has bestowed upon us.

We yet live in the land of the free, the home of the brave, that shining city on a hill, and for it, we humbly implore that He protect us and grant us much favor in our coming struggle to re-establish The Rule of Law over the rule of men.

For that and for each of you, fellow Patriots, I am grateful!

Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

After reading your publication several weeks ago, my colleagues and I decided to step up.

We put together 'ConstitutionOath.com' - take the oath, become an oath giver.

It's a simple oath - only to the Constitution - not to any commanding officer or person.

We're proud of what we've done - we've had a couple dozen sign ups - but we are expecting this to take off. We're doing it out of our own pockets - but that's ok. 3 generations have served in the US Army - we feel it's an investment well worth making.

Any comments or shoutouts would be appreciated!

Thanks again - and Happy Thanksgiving.

As I sit down with my loved ones to enjoy our Thansgiving dinner my pryaers and thoughts go out to the young men and womenf=offering up their lives to furtrher our liberty As a WWII veteran with almost four years of service and six major cam-paigns I,m not asshamed to sasy that I cry for our young who are sent home to their families only to return asgain to the battlefield. Jit's horrendous and (I say damn you! damn you to those in the WH and Congress dithering and partying and putting out youth in harm's way, not caring one whit; filling the air with liesand corrupting our nation with debt and an apotheosis of hate and moral decay.

It is surprising to me that, in this time of war, there are still some who can speak of how horrible war is - while sitting with their latte or hamburger. From the safety of the home front, the only such consideration should be as prelude to planning for the return of those who are immersed in that horrid crucible.

I cannot get out of my head when, recently, a person told me how terrible they think war is - as partial excuse for not supporting the troops; not half an hour later I read (I cannot recall where) that the only thing more terrible than war is the unwillingness of free men to consider anything worth a war. Those who think that freedom is not worth fighting for are not worthy of the blood shed by Americans fighting to defend it.

I cannot even hope that their chains sit lightly upon them, but I hope most fervently that all memory of our shared heritage is forgotten!

Thank you for your 11/25/09 patriot post about your friend in Afghanistan. May God bless him and all his fellow soldiers and families. My son has just left a few days ago for Iraq. We are very proud of our son. It is so unfortunate people are so uneducated and unappreciative of the sacrifices of the few for the many. World peace is such a vague, ambiguous term. I wonder if they understand what they mean.

Reading the recent article by Brian W. Walsh & Hans A. von Spakovsky of the Heritage Foundation concerning the use of the tax code and the criminal enforcement powers of the IRS for all who refuse to buy the soon-to-be mandated health insurance makes me think that this is, at the least, a 21st century version of the Stamp Act. I can only hope it will be resisted with as much fervor as was that measure in its time. The very idea of such an act even being proposed shows not only a total ignorance of the Constitution, but also a complete disregard for individual liberty; just as was the case in the eighteenth century, its passage will again be time for resistance by any means available.

I weep for all those who are now in harm's way, fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and I pray for their safety. Their families are lonely at home but strong and resolute. I would like to thank them today for giving the rest of us the gift of peace. We would never be able to repay you for all your sacrifices. I know the pain of a spouse who leaves for Iraq or Afghanistan. I also know how it feels to live in some part of the world that even time has forgotten, representing the U.S. Let's not forget them this Thanksgiving.

May God bless all of our soldiers and their families!

I've been outside the US since 1996 but I still display the flag I carried with me through nearly 30 years in the Army. Today, for Thanksgiving, I'm in Kharkov, Ukraine. The country only shook off the yolk of communism in 1992 and they still have teething problems with a free market economy and personal freedom. When I listen to my Ukrainian friends complain about democracy and how it hasn't improved their lot, I remind them that they are free say what they want, do what they want, and fail if they don't do the hard yards. They complain about politicians and corruption, and I give them this web site to read. If there's a PC handy, I log on and bring up the Patriot site. A few issues of the Patriot is a world class introduction to what it takes to gain and keep your freedom. I won't have Thanksgiving today, except in my heart, but I'm sharing the bounty of the American political philosophy, like the Apostle Paul in his journeys, to anyone who'll listen. And there are lots of folks here who will. Keep up the great work. Reminds me to remember where I came from even if I never get back.

I was thinking this morning of the title to this message on the Patriot Post, "Count Your Blessings". Of course, this is the name of an Old hymn of the American Church. The words are so good and may prove to be a blessing to someone today.

When upon life's billows

You are tempest tossed

When you are discouraged

thinking all is lost

Count your many blessing

Name them one by one

And it will surprise you

What the Lord has done.

So amid the conflict

whether great or small

Do not be discouraged

God is over all

Count your many blessings

Angels will attend

Help and comfort give you

To your journeys end.

Count your Blessings

Name them one by one

Count your blessings

See what God has done

Thanks be unto God for His bounty to us as Americans.

AS HE WAS WITH OUR FATHERS

"But while, in imitation of our pious Forefathers, we are aiming at security of our liberties, we should all be concerned to express by our conduct their piety and virtue, and in a day of darkness and general distress carefully avoid every thing offensive to God....

Let every attempt to secure our liberties be conducted with a manly fortitude, with that respectful decency which reason approves and which alone gives weight to the most salutary measures.... "

Perhaps the problem is identified ....

This is an interesting observation. Draw your own conclusions.

Johnny Carson nailed lawyers with one of his how cold was it? jokes! It was so cold that lawyers were running around with their hands in their own pockets!!

This is very interesting! I never thought about it this way. Perhaps this is why so many physicians are conservatives or republicans.

The Democratic Party has become the Lawyers Party.

Barack Obama is a lawyer.

Michelle Obama is a lawyer.

Hillary Clinton is a lawyer.

Bill Clinton is a lawyer.

John Edwards is a lawyer.

Elizabeth Edwards is a lawyer.

Every Democrat nominee since 1984 went to law school (although Gore did not graduate).

Every Democrat vice presidential nominee since 1976, except for Lloyd Bentsen, went to law school.

Look at leaders of the Democrat Party in Congress:

Harry Reid is a lawyer.

Nancy Pelosi is a lawyer.

The Republican Party is different.

President Bush is a businessman.

Vice President Cheney is a businessman.

The leaders of the Republican Revolution:

Newt Gingrich was a history professor.

Tom Delay was an exterminator. Dick Armey was an economist.

House Minority Leader Boehner was a plastic manufacturer.

The former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is a heart surgeon.

Who was the last Republican president who was a lawyer? Gerald Ford who left office 31 years ago and who barely won the Republican nomination as a sitting president, running against Ronald Reagan in 1976.

The Republican Party is made up of real people doing real work, who are often the targets of lawyers.

The Democrat Party is made up of lawyers. Democrats mock and scorn men who create wealth, like Bush and Cheney, or who heal the sick, like Frist, or who immerse themselves in history, like Gingrich. The Lawyers Party sees these sorts of people, who provide goods and services that people want, as the enemies of America. And, so we have seen the procession of official enemies, in the eyes of the Lawyers Party, grow. Against whom do Hillary and Obama rail? Pharmaceutical companies, oil companies, hospitals, manufacturers, fast food restaurant chains, large retail businesses, bankers, and anyone producing anything of value in our nation. This is the natural consequence of viewing everything through the eyes

of lawyers. Lawyers solve problems by successfully representing their clients, in this case the American people. Lawyers seek to have new laws passed, they seek to win lawsuits, they press appellate courts to overturn precedent, and lawyers always parse language to favor their side. Confined to the narrow practice of law, that is fine. But it is an awful way to

govern a great nation.

When politicians as lawyers begin to view some Americans as clients and other Americans as opposing parties, then the role of the legal system in our life becomes all-consuming. Some Americans become adverse parties of our very government. We are not all litigants in some vast social class-action suit. We are citizens of a republic that promises us a great deal of freedom from laws, from courts, and from lawyers.

Today, we are drowning in laws; we are contorted by judicial decisions; we are driven to distraction by omnipresent lawyers in all parts of our once private lives. America has a place for laws and lawyers, but that place is modest and reasonable, not vast and unchecked. When the most important decision for our next president is whom he will appoint to the Supreme Court, the role of lawyers and the law in America is too big. When lawyers use criminal prosecution as a continuation of politics by other means, as happened in the lynching of Scooter Libby and Tom Delay, then the power of lawyers in America is too great. When House Democrats sue America in order to hamstring our efforts to learn what our enemies

are planning to do to us, then the role of litigation in America has become crushing.

We cannot expect the Lawyers Party to provide real change, real reform or real hope in America Most Americans know that a republic in which every major government action must be blessed by nine unelected judges is not what.. Washington intended in 1789. Most Americans grasp that we cannot fight a war when ACLU lawsuits snap at the heels of our defenders. Most Americans intuit that more lawyers and judges will not restore declining moral values or spark the spirit of enterprise in our economy..

Perhaps Americans will understand that change cannot be brought to our nation by those lawyers who already largely dictate American society and business. Perhaps Americans will see that hope does not come from the mouths of lawyers but from personal dreams nourished by hard work. Perhaps Americans will embrace the truth that more lawyers with more power will only make our problems worse.

The United States has 5% of the world's population and 66% of the world's lawyers! Tort (Legal) reform legislation has been introduced in congress several times in the last several years to limit punitive damages in ridiculous lawsuits such as spilling hot coffee on yourself and suing the establishment that sold it to you and also to limit punitive damages in huge medical malpractice lawsuits. This legislation has continually been blocked from even being

voted on by the Democrat Party.

When you see that 97% of the political contributions from the American Trial Lawyers Association goes to the Democrat Party, then you realize who is responsible for our medical and product costs being so high!

From individuals, to state governments, to federal institutions initiated at the dawn of our Constitution, nothing -- absolutely nothing -- is sacred to the leftists currently controlling our nation's capital.

No, you forget abortion "rights," gay marriage "rights," special rights for minorities, and wealth redistribution aka "welfare." THOSE things are quite sacred to the Left.

Since March of 2008 I have kept an extensive log regarding Obama, his past (what is known that is), his promises (that became his lies), his sudden and unexplained rise to power that he has abused beyond comprehension. Each day brought me more offenses and more anger.

I (and all Christians) have been called to pray for our leaders with the knowledge that God has placed each of them into positions of power for His glory. This is a very tough nut for me to crack... One night two weeks ago I was tossing and turning, embroiled in seething anger towards Obama and could not pray or find rest. An unaudible thought (obviously not mine) said, "I love Barack Hussien Obama. And I died for him."

My anger drained from me. I realized that I in my natural state continues to sin against my Lord and I am no better (or worse) than Obama. Having said all of this may I pose a question regarding how we (nation and individual) fit in His plan? Is it possible that we are going at this wholeheartily in the wrong direction? Could it be that the short-falling (Greek: hamertia) of our nation has already doomed it into the history books? Should we then spend our time, efforts and whatever wealth we have towards spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the uninformed? Is not the individual soul and spirit of each of us far more important to our God than a paltry nation that will ultimately be swept aside by Him at the final part of the End of Days?

So much for brevity... I welcome all thoughts if any find the questions worth pondering and answering. I pray that God will continue to bless us all with the knowledge and grace of Christ. Ron.

With all due respect, Ron Dickman, our country is not a "paltry nation" that will be swept away at the end of days.

We have the best nation on the planet, we built it, and I refuse to accept defeat just because you say, we will all disappear in the end anyway. You may believe in the 2012 Mayan predictions but I don't. And it is not o.k. for Obama to destroy our country, we will not allow it, there are millions of us who did not vote for a hopey-changey communistic lifestyle or a fundamental makeover of our country. Nobody asked him nor empowered him to do it. Liberals just elected him president to carry on the traditions of our republic, end the war, and get more freebies. We did not give him carte blanche to re-make America. So, Ron, wake up from your lethargic state and fight.

Mr. Dickman, the Scriptures are not on your side. We are to pray for those in authority over us if they are good, if they are evil, we are to pray for God to restrain them (He uses humans according to law and that is the Constitution) Romans 13:3.

Our Fathers, "Put their hands to work and their hearts to God." So we must, too.
