The Authenticity of a Life

I watched in horror last week the clips of Lawrence O'Donnell’s interview with Herman Cain. The gist of O'Donnell’s questioning centered on his belief that Mr. Cain is not a “real” black because he was not getting his head cracked open for the cause. It is Mr. O'Donnell’s belief that he is capable and comfortable sitting in judgment of how another man has lived his life.

President Obama has several speeches in which he references our “collective salvation.” The idea is that your salvation is tied to mine. This is a decidedly Progressive mantra. It is also very dangerous.

Jefferson had the notion that as long as the way you lived neither picked his pocket nor broke his leg, you should be able to live any way you choose. Our Constitution is purposely constructed in such a way as to insure the primacy of the freedom of the individual. How far have we fallen from this idea when a white man can go on national television and tell a black man essentially that you have not lived the way you are supposed to?

Who among us wants this job? Who among us thinks they are capable of doing this job? This collective ideology among Progressives is presumptuous and misguided at best. It is about as far away from our Constitution as you can get. From this mindset springs forth the idea that governments can spend exponentially more than they collect in taxes. After all, there are additional things the governments of the world want to do in order to insure social justice. The presumption is that these men and women are capable of accurately defining that justice in the first place.

The Constitution was established in such a manner as to protect us from ourselves. The Founding Fathers were well aware that man, left to his own devices, would succumb to his fallibilities if allowed. One of the major protections is that people in elected office who are arrogant enough to sit in judgment of others cannot permanently alter our system without the consent of the people. Never has this protection been more precious than in this environment when a talking head can attack a man who, by any metric, is a huge success because he self determined his own path despite the objections of the collective.
