The Foundation

"No man can well doubt the propriety of placing a president of the United States under the most solemn obligations to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution." --Joseph Story

Liberty

President or monarch?

"We live in a Constitutional Republic. The President's job under the Constitution is to enforce the laws made by the elected Congress. His job is not to create new laws and enforce them all by himself. His job is as magistrate under the Constitution, not as Caudillo. He is not the law. He is supposed to enforce what Congress decides. The BP behavior is reminiscent of how, immediately after assuming office, Mr. Obama, with no Congressional authority or administrative allowance, simply made a phone call to fire the head of GM. When I called the White House press office to ask under what law or regulation Mr. Obama was acting, I was told he did not need a law. If the government put a lot of money into GM, it could call the shots at GM, I was told. But under what authority, I asked. 'None needed,' was the final answer. ... The same goes for Mr. Obama's demand that BP pay the lost wages of oil and gas workers suspended from work because of the moratorium on Gulf of Mexico underseas drilling. There simply was no legislation allowing this kind of specific demand. Mr. Obama's demand was in the nature of a threat, more than a Constitutional act. ... [T]o create specific enactments and actions without any authority -- now Mr. Obama's specialty -- is so at odds with the law of the land that it terrifies me. These are not the acts of a teacher on Constitutional law. These are the acts of a big city boss or a third world dictator." --columnist Ben Stein

For the Record

"Were the British Empire that fought the War of 1812 still around, America might be looking at a War of 2012. Instead, a rattled BP appears willing to fork over much more money than it will owe, including money for 'lost wages' due to the president's own panicky moratorium. BP obviously invited all of this through its gross incompetence, but what if the same 'lost wages' standard applied to the Obama administration? It, too, is busy destroying the 'way of life' for workers in multiple industries, but in its case that's not even an accident; it is a deliberate plan. Which federal government office should coal and oil rig workers show up at to retrieve their lost wages once Obama's energy laws crippling those industries pass? Obama offers these workers the consolation of a 'clean energy' job in the future. That's very thoughtful of him. These workers can look forward to the prospect of a job, or at the very least a generous interview opportunity for a job, at wind farms several states away from their homes maybe a decade from now. Once again, the Obama administration illustrates that the greatest threat to the economy comes not from the environment but from environmentalists. Hurricanes and oil spills cost workers far fewer jobs than do the policies of trendy pantheism." --columnist George Neumayr

Re: The Left

"Obama is dreamer in chief: He wants to take us to this green future 'even if we're unsure exactly what that looks like. Even if we don't yet precisely know how we're going to get there.' Here's the offer: Tax carbon, spend trillions and put government in control of the energy economy -- and he will take you he knows not where, by way of a road he knows not which. That's why Tuesday's speech was received with such consternation. It was so untethered from reality. The gulf is gushing, and the president is talking mystery roads to unknown destinations. That passes for vision, and vision is Obama's thing. It sure beats cleaning up beaches." --columnist Charles Krauthammer

Government

"Katrina and the Gulf oil spill prove that, at best, government can only get in the way. But at worst -- like so-called global warming, lack of border security and unfunded Social Security -- they are all part of the same thing: government created problems that government prevents from being solved. The resultant discourse leads to weakening the resolve of the people to resist the 'helping' heavy hand of government. Put another way, government has an incentive to not solve problems, the Arizona immigration law being a perfect case in point where government has really shown its hand. Problems are its fuel -- fuel needed to empower itself and enslave its subjects. In the now infamous words of Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel: a crisis is a terrible thing to waste." --columnist W.R. Wansley

The Gipper

"We who live in free market societies believe that growth, prosperity and ultimately human fulfillment, are created from the bottom up, not the government down. Only when the human spirit is allowed to invent and create, only when individuals are given a personal stake in deciding economic policies and benefitting from their success -- only then can societies remain economically alive, dynamic, progressive, and free. Trust the people. This is the one irrefutable lesson of the entire postwar period contradicting the notion that rigid government controls are essential to economic development." --Ronald Reagan

"I am a Canadian missionary to the U.S. and rely completely on the support of others both in Canada and the U.S. My family of 5 (all Americans) most certainly falls into the 'limited income' category. However, it is our delight to give to The Patriot Post as well as other worthy missions. We firmly believe it is a worthy investment in this great nation we have been called to. It has been my experience over the past 20 years that the largest donations (cumulatively) come from those who would appear to have the least to give. At times it has been quite stunning. I may not have much to give but I am grateful for the opportunity to give what I have to something I believe in. In the case of The Patriot, I also benefit greatly." --Ken

"I've just done my small part to help combat the financial 'summer slump.' The Patriot is always the high point in my e-mail in-basket. I'm happy to lend my support to the most articulate voice advocating for our liberty. You've got my support for as long as you publish." --Mark in Ohio

"I just read your donation request 'Brushfires of Freedom' which spurred me on to re-read your Essential Liberty articles, and I just have to write and tell you how grateful I am for your existence. I'm a middle-aged single mom in nursing school, so I can't give at the moment, but you will stay on my list so when I'm making money, Lord willing, you will get your share! I believe in and support what you're doing. I send on your articles from time to time to my children and friends who I think will read and benefit. (And a few who might donate.) My oldest son was in the Army Reserves from '02-'07, served in Iraq and Afghanistan both. My second son was a Marine from '04-'08, did combat in Iraq and plenty of other 'serving' the rest of his stint. Now my oldest daughter is in the Air Force, is a linguist, and putting in some long, boring hours serving in her own way. My 'baby' daughter is 17 and debating going into the Air Force. During my boys' deployments, your articles helped sustain me, and I often sent articles to them. I love how you bring rich historical nuggets to those of us who don't have time or opportunity to find and read them for ourselves. I wonder how many folks out there, severely historically malnourished, have received their first taste of freedom understanding from your pages, and grown into educated Patriots." --Mary

Political Futures

"A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that only 29 percent of Americans are prepared to re-elect their incumbent representative in the US House this fall, while fully 60 percent say they are 'inclined to look around for someone else to vote for.' ... Not surprisingly, The Post reports that 'anti-incumbent sentiment [is] at an all-time high.' ... Don't bet on it. According to Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, no more than 100 of the 435 US House seats on the ballot this November can by any stretch of the imagination be considered 'competitive.' Of them, only 24 are rated genuine toss-ups, and only 16 more are held by one party in a district that leans to the other party. Assuming Sabato is right -- and granting that anything can happen between now and November -- only 40 House seats are truly in play. In other words, roughly 90 percent of US House seats are safe. Sad to say, roughly 90 percent of US House seats are always safe. In the 23 congressional elections between 1964 and 2008, the re-election rate of US representatives dropped below 90 percent only five times -- and only once in the last 30 years. In 2006, a Democratic surge swept Republicans from their House majority -- yet 94 percent of the House was reelected. In 1994, an even larger Republican surge washed the Democrats from control -- but the overall reelection rate was 90 percent nonetheless. 'Nothing is so essential to the preservation of a republican government as a periodical rotation,' declared Virginia statesman George Mason during the debate over ratification of the Constitution. Voters routinely say they agree, but alas, that isn't how they vote." --columnist Jeff Jacoby

Culture

"Consider that New York just raised its standard for passing sixth grade reading and math tests to the following: on the reading test, 20 correct answers out of 39 questions gets one a passing grade; on the sixth grade math test, 20 out of 49 does the trick. In other words, getting a grade of 51% on the reading test and 41% on the math test gets you promoted to the seventh grade. ... Public school education in New York -- and elsewhere -- has become an overt fraud. ... What are the those in charge thinking? First and foremost, about themselves. They realize that their 'business model' -- a system which has made the genuine education of children and genuine accountability of teachers utterly meaningless -- is an ongoing failure. How do you fix failure? In the real world, failure is fixed by adopting no-nonsense standards -- and getting rid of employees incapable of meeting them. In the world of unionized pubic schools, failure is 'fixed' simply by changing the definition of the word. In other words, failure equals success because 'we say so.' And why do we say so? Because we are politicians beholden to the unions. ... And make no mistake: this is a fraud made possible because the Democrat Party is its chief enabler. Over the last twenty years, the National Education Association, the nation's largest teacher's union, has given ninety-seven percent of its campaign contributions to Democratic candidates. In return, Democrats have opposed everything which threatens the unions' status quo: school choice, ending tenure, instituting merit pay, charter schools, standardized tests and anything else which would allow Americans to clearly understand what a joke public school education has become." --columnist Arnold Ahlert

The Last Word

"This whole oil spill mess just sort of highlights the fact that Obama has no idea what a president is supposed to do. He's been constantly vowing to take swift action but doesn't seem to have a clue what that action should be. ... So people look at Obama and how he doesn't seem to know what he's doing with the oil spill, is flailing around trying to stimulate the economy, and is forcing a poorly thought out and unread health care bill on America and say he's doing a bad job as president. But as I said, we're being unfair to him. What was Obama before all this? He was a community organizer -- pretty much a made up job with unknown responsibilities, as far as I can tell. I doubt Obama even knew what he was supposed to do in that job. And after community organizer, he was a legislator who voted yes, no, and present on things -- a pretty simple job at which he reportedly was average. So what in his resume gives anyone the idea he would know how to do anything about a huge environmental disaster? What in his previous experience gives us any inkling he knows the first thing about economics? Why are we angry at him for not knowing things there was no reason to ever think he would know? ... It's like we took a fry cook from McDonald's and decided to make him a neurosurgeon because he looked good in a surgical mask and then got mad at him when he killed his first patient. Who is really to blame here?" --humor columnist Frank J. Fleming

The Last Word - "It's like we took a fry cook from McDonald's and decided to make him a neurosurgeon because he looked good in a surgical mask and then got mad at him when he killed his first patient."

Sometimes humor can expose a stinging truth. The problem in his case is that the fry cook would likely be immediately, banned from the operating room, brought up on charges of manslaughter and sued for malpractice.

In the case of Obama, charges have to be filed in the House of Representatives. Then there is a vote and a simple majority have to agree to impeach the President. From there it moves to the Senate where, after a trial, it takes a 2/3rds majority to convict.

In today's highly-partisan environment I fear that the will of the people will, as we have seen over the last year especially, be lost to partisan politics. There aren't enough Representatives/Congressmen that would have the guts to stand up and represent the people that elected them into office. And, if history is any indication, I doubt there will the sufficient turnover required in order to make this happen.

So, where does this leave us?

Jerry L. Cooke, Ph.D.

I was surprised that it took FoxNews until this morning to report that ALL States in the US are directed, trained, and funded to enforce immigration laws of the US and have been for decades. I thought that I would take a minute to also point out that whole sections of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, the Texas Transportation Code, the Texas Agriculture Code, the Texas Government Code, the Texas Education Code, the Texas Health and Safety Code, the Texas Natural Resources Code, the Texas Election code, and the Texas Administrative Code are direct quotes of Federal statutes or rules. This was done so that our State law enforcement officers could/can enforce those various Federal laws.

I think that if the Obama Administration continues to threaten Arizona with law suits over their immigration statutes, the States ought of offer to stop enforcing ALL Federal laws. Oh, and they might also consider no longer deputizing of Federal law enforcement officers which allow them to carry fire arms and violate State traffic laws when in pursuit in their State. While they are at it, they could also deny Federal officers use of State and local jails or courts. They could openly, boldly, and loudly ignore Federal statutes that clearly have NO authorization in the United States Constitution and hold federal tax dollars when threatened by a Federal agency. Maybe it’s time that the Obama administration and the liberal democrats in Congress learns that (t)he(y) govern(s) by permission within individual States. Just a thought.

Obama took an oath to defend the Constitution when he was sworn into office. It is obvious not only that he has not done so, but he has no intention of doing so. Isn't this grounds for impeachment?

I saw a YouTube video this weekend in which Michelle Obama was speaking to an unknown group of people. The speech was about HIV testing and how it carries a stigma, but should not. She said that she and her husband, Barack, were in his "native country of Kenya" and got tested for HIV to show the people not to be afraid of the testing. Her words, "native country" She confirmed what we have all known, that he is not a natural born citizen.

Much as I wish it were otherwise, I have to agree with Jeff Jacoby's column quoting Larry Sabato on the probable outcome of the midterm elections in the House. I just don't see the electoral tsunami that many conservatives and Republicans are predicting/hoping for. IF the GOP captures 40 seats, it will have a bare majority -- no more -- and will have difficulty reversing the damage already done by Obama and the Democrats. I fear that, once again, we'll be merely nibbling around the edges of the steady march to an unconstitutional socialist state.

not really surprised about the "McDonalds fry-cook" analogy.

In our country, marketing has been elevated to an art form and Obama is the marketer's masterpiece. A veritable dream come true. However, with respect to his impact on this country, and as far as "art forms" are concerned, Obama is more like Dorian Gray's picture come to life.

God Help us all.

Community Organizer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_organizing

FBCOs and many grassroots organizing models are built on the work of Saul Alinsky, discussed below, from the 1930s into the 1970s.[3]

[edit] Grassroots and "Door-Knocking" Groups

Grassroots organizing builds community groups from scratch, developing new leadership where none existed and organizing the unorganized. It is a values based process where people are brought together to act in the interest of their communities and the common good. Networks of community organizations that employ this method and support local organizing groups include National People's Action and ACORN.

"Door knocking" grassroots organizations like ACORN organize poor and working-class members recruiting members one by one in the community. Because they go door-to-door, they are able to reach beyond established organizations and the "churched" to bring together a wide range of less privileged people. ACORN tends to stress the importance of constant action in order to maintain the commitment of a less rooted group of participants.

Random thoughts. While glad that our country could finally elect somebody with different color skin than white, I am sadly disappointed in the qualifications of that person. However, did we really elect the first black president? Why do we call him black when his mother was white and she provided most of his upbringing? That qualifies his 'white' part more than his 'black' part. So this sounds very racist in that there is talk of skin color at all. How about next time we cover up their faces during campaign, disguise their voices, and pretend they are all the same race, then vote on the most qualified candidate?

| Senate Home Page | List of 2007 Senate Bills

Current Bill Summary

SCS/SBs 348, 626, & 461 - This act creates the Missouri Omnibus Immigration Act.

Under the act it is illegal to employ unauthorized aliens and the act mandates that every employer in the state participate in the federal Basic Pilot Program in order to verify an employee’s work authorization status. Employers must submit an affidavit to the Department of Revenue accompanying remittance of withholding taxes or annual income tax returns that affirms that the employer is enrolled in the Basic Pilot Program. The failure to timely file may trigger a tax audit. If the employer knowingly makes a material misrepresentation of fact with regard to the affidavit, the employer must add back business expense deductions taken to determine federal adjusted gross income in order to determine Missouri adjusted gross income for wages paid to employees and independent contractors whose employment eligibility was not verified under the Basic Pilot Program.

Law enforcement officers must inquire into the immigration status of any individual detained in a jail facility for a violation of state law. If the individual is found to be illegal, the officer shall cooperate with any request from federal authorities regarding detention and custody transfer.

The state shall enter into cooperative agreements with the federal government to designate state law enforcement officers to help enforce federal immigration law.

Illegal aliens are barred from attending all public universities in the state and shall not receive any type of public assistance or benefit.

The act also authorizes cities, villages, and towns to enact ordinances prohibiting the employment of unauthorized aliens or unlawful workers and may deny business licenses to employers who employ unlawful workers.

This act is similar to SB 334 (2005), SB 988 (2006), SB 178 (2007), SB 626 (2007), SB 461 (2007), and SB 180 (2007).

I agree with Steve. Unfortunately, I don't believe the American electorate will take care of business and save the country from its downward slide to Third World country status under Obutthead. Aren't these the same people who elected this disastrous nitwit in the first place? Just look at the recent situation in SC. They voted for a candidate who lives on is father's couch and has no qualifications whatsoever for the Senate. No research or forethought was accomplished. They just voted for him because they like his name or something. Sounds vaguely like the 2008 Presidential election, doesn't it?

I've been watching some of the FIFA World Cup, Soccer (football) is much more fun to play than watch, it is excruciating to watch. Soccer is a perfect metaphor for Socialism (starts with the same 3 letters) the goal of Soccer is to score a goal, not to win. A tie is the ultimate (& usual) desired outcome. either a win or tie obtains stnding points. Ten players run around kicking the ball in circles, incessantly for 90+ minutes (the + may be added by the ref to help any team to tie the score) while the goalie (the poliburo- dressed in different garb & the only player able to touch the ball with hands, supervises play like a gubment official. Improvememt could be had by dispensing with the offsides rule, where no player may not get past or closer to the opponent goal than a defending player (goalie not included). American sports call this a slam dunk or going deep or stealing a base, or making serve. So in Soccer as in other Socialist activities, an individual may not gain an advantage towards the goal of a win.

Our fellow teachers are always amazed that neither of us are members of NEA. My wife was an "unknowing" victim her 1st year to teach (over 35 years ago), and I have never belonged. It seems to be an unwriten LAW that if you teach, you MUST belong to NEA. (Why, don't ya know that they have a 1 million dollar insurance policy in case you're ever sued!....so does your personal property insurance.) This teacher union does not represent ANY of our conservative values, our Christian views, or our Godly morals; thus we refuse to pay them any of our hard-earned money. We've found nothing good about NEA. They encourage mediocre teachers and perpetuate failure in our public schools. School systems are forced to keep lazy, inadequate teachers. NEA is against any type of competition from the private sector or charter schools. The community-organizer-UNchief received hefty donations from NEA, and in return, he did away with the voucher system in D.C......but his kids get to attend PRIVATE school. Why is that?....isn't public good enough for them? Why isn't NEA throwing a striped-fit about his choice of schools for his daughters?

Dale and Gloria, my wife taught for 37 years in the peoples republik of NYS. In NYS you have to belong to the union or pay a fee, equal too dues, to the union. Did anyone say First Amendment? The only objection she had was not contributing to "Vote Cope", the union election fund. She did get some satisfaction by wearing a "Pat Buchanan for President" button. Several teaches said they wished they had the nerve to do the same. Being retired she no longer pays the union anything, but still receives the union newsletter. We put it to use, picking up the dog droppings. We also didn't make the mistake of glancing at it after eating. How do you say propaganda?

From articles and comments I've read about Obama and his days of community organizing, he did very well at the job. He worked with low income people in Chicago to help them explore ways to obtain benefits they wanted from the government. In essence, he taught his following "the squeaky wheel gets the oil."

I researched a man named Manning Johnson who was a community organizer in the 1930s. He was sponsored by communists out of New York. (By the way, I read in an article that Obama was hired out of New York. Coincidentially, his mother was hired by the Ford Foundation in New York to do social work abroad.) Manning Johnson eventually wised up to the fact that the communists did not care about him or his people...he realized they were using him and his people to create unrest for revolution. They wanted black people to remain victims for that purpose.

this is a reply to Mary whose baby daughter of 17 is debating on joining the Air Force. Why not and give it a try and it may not be something you want to do for a career because it isn't for everyone. But there is not a a more noble profession. After 26 years 7 months and 19 days, I had not planned for staying that long but my options were few when I enlisted and it evolved into a great and rewarding career and what a journey it was. and in these uncertain times it has been a great investment CMSgt Al Womack, USAF Ret.

This oil spill has me looking at it two ways and both of them cost us more money.

BP has now contributed into the coffers by a enunciated request by Biden and this may entitle them in a back door way, to retain drilling rights in the Gulf and contribute further future donations to the elite Deemer party as a form of tribute to show all how grateful a BP company can be.

If they (BP) cannot stop the leak, and lose the ability to make the contribution request in a timely manner, then BP becomes Barry's Petrol and the riggs in the gulf will be moved to deeper waters in Brazil where G. Soros has in his hand $20 billion dollars American to crew those unused oil riggs. This would constitute a great fortune for the combined efforts of the G. Soros/Barry's Petrol companies and they could live happily ever after, while America was left with a staggering loss.

With the reply that Arizona has received from Hussein on Sending the National Guard to Secure the Border and the Insult to their Senator Kyl, calling the Senator a Liar, when Hussein said if the Republicans wouldn't pass "the Amnesty Bill" he would hold Arizona Hostage????

Isn't it in the Jurisdiction of Governor Brewer, to Protect her Citizens, to activate the Arizona Militia and the Arizona State Guard to "Secure the Borders"??

Arizona held hostage????? Enough is Enough.

Frank Fleming really hit the nail on the head: The ROOT CAUSE of the Presidential Idiocy/Idiot is the INCREDIBLY-STUPID VOTERS who elected him! Once again we have to ask: Why should the 'bottom half' of the Gaussian (Normal) Distribution of populational intellect be even allowed to vote?! Why should one qualified only to say "...and would you like fries with that?" be allowed to decide the national-course of the USA??? Something went wrong with the picture once 'non-land-owners' were allowed to vote!

The Declaration states: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

OFF THE TOPIC BUT..... What if we have a homegrown terriorist in the Whitehouse? It would answer why he doesn't want muslims tried in military court and why he played down the army psychiatrist killer in TX among other puzzling moves he is making.

Mark, the final comments on Obama's abilities - as anything - brings to mind the wonderful Peter Sellers movie: Being There.

The plot: Chance (Peter Sellers) is a middle-aged man who lives in the townhouse of a wealthy man in Washington D.C. Chance seems very simple-minded and has lived in the house his whole life, tending the garden, with virtually no contact with the outside world. His cultural and social education is derived entirely from what he watches on the television sets provided by the "Old Man," who raised him. The only other person in his life is Louise, the maid who cooks his meals and looks upon him as nothing more than a child who has failed to grow up. When his benefactor dies, Chance is visited by attorneys handling the estate. They force him to leave his sheltered existence and discover the outside world for the first time.

Other than Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, this is as good as it gets in describing the current presidential incumbent.

Our schools have been coddling our kids and making them "feel good" for too long. We are promoting and graduation children who are truly functionally illiterate! Too many cannot spell, do not know how to speak with proper grammar, cannot even make change without a help from the cash register, and have many other things wrong with their mental abilities after 12 years of public school. How dare we cheat our kids of what is rightfully theirs in our society and then blame the teachers whose hands are tied behind their backs, or are unable to do their jobs well in the first place? Disgusting! We better wise up soon, because it is later than you think!

A well educated public school product of the 50's and proud of it!

In response to The Last Word (6-21-10), I have to agree with Mr. Fleming in his assessment of Obama. Other than give good campaign speaches (most likely written by someone else), what has he actually done for the good of this country? And just what was in his resume that qualified him to be president? Hopefully the problems caused and neglected by the present administration will cause all voting Americans to research the candidates at the next election before casting their vote.

Since Obama was the one who put the moratorium on drilling in the gulf into effect, maybe HE should be paying the lost wages of the oil industry workers that HIS actions put out of work.

He behaves as if the USA is Chicago and he's Mayor Richard Daily (Sr.)

How his actions shame us all.

When will we get it right? It is wrong to bad mouth teachers and schools. Many students don't care if they learn or pass. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

I went out the front door of my high school without a full box of tools. It sure wasn't the teachers fault. I didn't care. I wish my parents had booted my butt and made me do my homework and study.

The major problem is our society. There is too much going on to be concerned with education. There is too little parenting going on. If parents would take interest in their student and make them do their homework and study the grades would go up.

Teachers would like to raise standards. If they did a large percentage of their students would fail. Teachers are forced to lower the standards or they would lose their job because they fail too many students. Make that horse drink!

Thanks, Patriot Post, for the impact you have had on me and my family. I and my two sons are all Army Guard: my oldest just completed a tour in Iraq providing convoy security from COB Adder. My younger son and I are serving on an Air Defense mission in the National Capital Region this year. Love of country, the need for a strong defense, and the honor of serving are things I have taught my boys, and I appreciate the back-up I get on a daily basis from your excellent publication. God bless and help us all.

Frank Fleming's article in the Last Word (6-21-10)is priceless.Realizing very early that Obama had nothing of value to offer the American people,I did not support him and certainly did not waste my vote.A review of his time in the office of the U.S. president proves he has accomplished nothing of value and proposes nothing of value for our future. His actions continually scream unAmerican, inexperience, incompetence, indecision, along with embarrassing stupidity. I expected nothing of value from him and can honestly say I have not been disappointed. It is my hope that qualified voters will give serious thought to the candidate for the highest office before again going to the polls.

David Crea, you ask, "Once again we have to ask: Why should the 'bottom half' of the Gaussian (Normal) Distribution of populational intellect be even allowed to vote?! Why should one qualified only to say "...and would you like fries with that?" be allowed to decide the national-course of the USA???"

I submit that as one who sees payroll taxes snatched from his wages and who knows the relation between work and purchasing power, the fry-basket operator is far more qualified to vote than the slouch at the checkout aisle who says, "Gimme some Camels. Now where's my Food Stamp card?" I suggest that people who are dependent on welfare programs for more than six weeks out of the year, except maybe for permanent disability, should not be eligible to vote.
