"When the government fears the people there is liberty; when the people fear the government there is tyranny." --Thomas Jefferson

Liberty

The path of liberty or the road to tyranny

"We are faced today with two different roads, one of which follows the path of liberty set by our Founders in the Constitution, and one of which diverges from that path and leads us down the road to tyranny. There are two different warring camps within our society, and the ongoing battle between those camps has been graphically illustrated in recent primary elections and by the vicious fight over the nationalization of our healthcare system. On one side are those of us, including the members of the Tea Party movement, who work hard to support their families, who love their country, and who understand and revere a document that has stood firm for 223 years to guide us. These ordinary, everyday Americans rightly fear the unprecedented growth in the size and power of the federal government. They are angry over the unsustainable and uncontrollable growth of federal spending and the federal deficit that will inevitably lead to financial ruin. They are appalled over the contempt shown by so many in the other camp for our governing document, the Constitution. ... That other camp is made up of politicians who recognize no limits on their power, their liberal activist allies in the judiciary, and members of the media, Hollywood, and academia, who have been stretching, bending, and chipping away at the Constitution for decades. They welcome a tyranny of elites who can govern however they see fit without being checked and limited by what they view as an 'anachronistic' document and the parochial views of the American people. After all, they know what is best for all of us. They should control our lives and our economy. ... There is a growing movement throughout America to reinvigorate the tree of liberty, a tree whose trunk is the Constitution, whose limbs are the Bill of Rights, and whose leaves are the new sons and daughters of liberty who embody the same spirit that infused our Founders. On Constitution Day, let Americans rededicate themselves to securing 'the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity' by actively working to preserve the Constitution of the United States." --former Attorney General Edwin Meese

The Gipper

"We cannot escape our destiny, nor should we try to do so. The leadership of the free world was thrust upon us two centuries ago in that little hall of Philadelphia. In the days following World War II, when the economic strength and power of America was all that stood between the world and the return to the dark ages, Pope Pius XII said, 'The American people have a great genius for splendid and unselfish actions. Into the hands of America God has placed the destinies of an afflicted mankind.' We are indeed, and we are today, the last best hope of man on earth." --Ronald Reagan

Opinion in Brief

"[One of the] central reasons for the Tea Party's rise ... is the yardstick. ... Imagine that over at the 36-inch end you've got pure liberal thinking -- more and larger government programs, a bigger government that costs more in the many ways that cost can be calculated. Over at the other end you've got conservative thinking -- a government that is growing smaller and less demanding and is less expensive. You assume that when the two major parties are negotiating bills in Washington, they sort of lay down the yardstick and begin negotiations at the 18-inch line. Each party pulls in the direction it wants, and the dominant party moves the government a few inches in their direction. But if you look at the past half century or so you have to think: How come even when Republicans are in charge, even when they're dominant, government has always gotten larger and more expensive? It's always grown! It's as if something inexorable in our political reality -- with those who think in liberal terms dominating the establishment, the media, the academy -- has always tilted the starting point in negotiations away from 18 inches, and always toward liberalism, toward the 36-inch point. Democrats on the Hill or in the White House try to pull it up to 30, Republicans try to pull it back to 25. A deal is struck at 28. Washington Republicans call it victory: 'Hey, it coulda been 29!' But regular conservative-minded or Republican voters see yet another loss. They could live with 18. They'd like 8. Instead it's 28. ... What they want is representatives who'll begin the negotiations at 18 inches and tug the final bill toward 5 inches. And they believe Tea Party candidates will do that." --columnist Peggy Noonan

Political Futures

"Writing in 1962, [economist Milton Friedman] noted that 'conditions have changed,' as we 'now have several decades of experience with governmental intervention.' Indeed, it was clear then, way back in 1962, that free economies vastly outperform managed economies. And that was before the collapse of the Soviet/central-planning model, the economic explosion resulting from the Reagan-Thatcher tax cuts, the repudiation of Keynes even in Britain, the bankruptcy of the European welfare state, the rise of the Asian Tigers, and more. What was obvious in 1962 was beyond obvious in 2008 -- or should have been. And yet, Friedman sensed a lingering threat, one that hadn't sauntered off into the night. It was a 'subtle' threat, not from enemies outside but from do-gooders inside. He warned of an 'internal threat' from those professing 'good intentions and good will who wish to reform us,' who 'are anxious to use the power of the state to achieve their ends and confident of their own ability to do so.' It's so subtle that Americans voted for such reform, or 'change,' decisively, on November 4, 2008, without even knowing it, giving the threat vigor. Thus, the managers and planners are in charge, with their hands on the ship of state, seizing the resources that feed the most dynamic, prosperous engine that capitalism and freedom ever produced. The Invisible Hand has been waved off by the visible hands of the reformers. And they are spending us into oblivion." --author and professor Dr. Paul Kengor

Government

"From 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed, until 1940, when the first Social Security checks were paid out, Americans did not receive income from the federal government unless they were pensioned veterans or employees of the government itself. For 164 years, Americans took care of themselves and their own families. With the Social Security Act, they began to slide into government dependency. Today, thanks to Social Security, a majority of Americans over 65 rely on the federal government for a majority of their income. Thanks to Medicare, enacted in 1965, American seniors now rely on the federal government for their health care, too. If Congress does not repeal Obamacare, virtually all Americans will soon depend on government for their health care. We will no longer be a free and self-reliant people -- we will be a government-dependent people." --CNSNews editor Terrence Jeffrey

Re: The Left

"U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently claimed: 'Districts around the country have literally been cutting for five, six, seven years in a row. And, many of them, you know, are through, you know, fat, through flesh and into bone....' Really? They cut spending five to seven consecutive years? Give me a break! Andrew Coulson, director of the Cato Institute's Center for Educational Freedom, writes that out of 14,000 school districts in the United States, just seven have cut their budgets seven years in a row. How about five years in a row? Just 87. That's a fraction of 1 percent in each case. Duncan may be pandering to his constituency, or he may actually be fooled by how school districts (and other government agencies) talk about budget cuts. When normal people hear about a budget cut, we assume the amount of money to be spent is less than the previous year's allocation. But that's not what bureaucrats mean. 'They are not comparing current year spending to the previous year's spending,' Coulson writes. 'What they're doing is comparing the approved current year budget to the budget that they initially dreamed about having.' So if a district got more money than last year but less than it asked for, the administrators consider it a cut. 'Back in the real world, a K-12 public education costs four times as much as it did in 1970, adjusting for inflation: $150,000 versus the $38,000 it cost four decades ago (in constant 2009 dollars),' Coulson says. Taxpayers need to understand this sort thing just to protect themselves from greedy government officials and teachers unions." --columnist John Stossel

Faith & Family

"Surrender on gay marriage is surrender on marriage -- which is surrender on the family and, ultimately, surrender on civilization. ... This unwillingness to fight for the family, on which civilization depends, is another sign of the failure of modern conservatism. The right can win a thousand battles against big government and lose the war for America's future, if it surrenders on marriage and the family. America's social traumas -- illegitimacy, juvenile crime, drug abuse, female-headed-households -- can all be traced back to the decline of the family: which started with the Great Society in the '60s, accelerated with no-fault divorce in the '70s, continued with the rise of cohabitation, and reached its culmination with strange-sex marriage. ... Unfortunately, many conservative intellectuals have lost sight of a crucial fact: American exceptionalism rests on three pillars -- faith, family and freedom. Remove any one, and the entire structure collapses. ... Without the family, it doesn't matter how many times we defeat socialism (nationalized health-care, government take-over of business, soaring deficits, redistributionism), in the end, we lose -- which is why the left has made same-sex marriage its priority, and why it is less tolerant of dissent here than anywhere else. Conservatives who don't understand this, understand nothing." --columnist Don Feder

"Thank you, Mr. Alexander, for the lighthouse and the shore-bell during these turbulent times. While many are content to steer to any mad wind, we have been blessed by God Our Heavenly Father with a voice in the wilderness. You are the watchman of Ezekiel -- charged with sounding the alarum; we hear and we respond." --Guy

"Mr. Alexander -- As much as I hope we can undo Obama's damage, I disagree with your assertion in The Enshrinement of Essential Liberty that BHO is the most dangerous President in our history. FDR was far more destructive to our country and our founding principles. He is the one that started us down this path. He had no use at all for the constitution. Even Wilson was probably more dangerous, because he set the philosophical principles that FDR relied upon. Ironicly, BHO may be the one that reverses this movement, since the people are finally waking up to the danger." --Colin

"Regarding Friday's Digest on taxes, neither the White House or most of Congress understand these fundamental facts: Tax rate cuts historically cause tax revenue to go up, not down because they encourage economic activity, create jobs, and therefore increase the amount of profits and wages that are subject to taxation. The Dem's method of applying lower tax rates to a stable amount of income subject to taxation will show less revenue, of course. But that is moronic and defies historical evidence. What is disturbing is that the media and Republicans are letting them get away with making these nonsensical calculations. Also, nobody ever mentions that Democrats, including then-Sen. Obama, never uttered the words Bush Tax Cuts during 2003-2009 without adding the misleading suffix -- for the very wealthiest Americans. Now, they want to extend the tax cuts for the middle class only. Why is nobody asking how they can extend something that they steadfastly claimed for almost a decade never existed in the first place?" --Jim

The Last Word

"Something else that annoys the heck out of me is having [Michelle] Obama, who apparently regards herself as America's own Nanny McPhee, constantly lecturing us about what our kids should be eating. How about if she gets off our backs and starts nagging her own husband? Every time I see him -- at least every time I see him off the golf links -- he's scarfing down waffles, ice cream and cheeseburgers. On the other hand, one of the few joys I have with the Obamas in the White House is imagining dinner time, with Michele pestering the kids to eat their greens, and little Malia pointing at the bozo-in-chief and saying, 'Why do we have to eat broccoli when he's having a hot fudge sundae?!'" --columnist Burt Prelutsky

It would seem Mr. Feder believes that allowing 1/10 of 1 percent of the population who are gay, who want to marry, will destroy the foundation of America and the family. Well if the family and the foundation is so weak, maybe it deserves to fall. He sounds like Chicken Little crying the sky is falling. I on the other hand believe the foundation in which America sits is strong and resilient. Faith in the Constitution and the rule of law will prevail and the Federal Government does not need to get involved in Marriage or Religion.

at how much a pound? And the Gipper had more than

this shadow of a suit has, under his fingernails.

I've never been so sick of seeing a first family on

tv, not the kids, but BO and his mrs. I'd almost

wish for Jimmy Carter back instead of the idiot we

have now. At least Jimmy took better care of his

brother. And Jimmy was smart enough not to show

his face every single day on the tube. And BO would

not know how to find a job for anyone else if a

shovel hit him in the back of the head stepping on it. He's leading us left into poverty. My union

had 440 unemployed under bush jr. and now we have

1,100 plus 200 apprentices unemployed under BO. These are Electricians who know to do the project

under budget and on time. In the meantime lots of

roads are being fixed in Minnesota but no traffic cause there are no jobs to go to on the roads. Elect some one like this young Guy out of Wisconsin

who doesn't have to go see the wizard to get a brain

send them with BO to some banana republic where they

want to be poor, and leave us alone.

Not only does the government base their cutbacks on their proposed budget, most of the jobs that are cut did not actually have anyone working in that job. therefore there wasn't any real budget savings or lost job.

Peggy Noonan is actually getting it!

Hip hip hooray!

Posted September 20, 2010 at 12:30:21 PM

George Mears, Suffolk, VA

Today's excellent Brief included a quote from a recent WSJ Editorial by Peggy Noonan. However, in the same article, Ms. Noonan was proposing a premise that I thoroughly reject. She seemed to be suggesting that the TEA Party has raised awareness so we should somehow not tread lightly: "But establishments exist for a reason. It is true that the party establishment is compromised, and by many things, but one of them is experience. They've lived through a lot, seen a lot, know the national terrain. They know how things work. They know the history. I wonder if tea party members know how fragile are the institutions that help keep the country together."

I used to follow Ms. Noonan's analyses of political and cultural events almost religiously until I realized the she too was a closet supporter of an elite "ruling class" a few years ago. She further tipped her hand with her almost irrational and catty attacks on, and dismissive consideration of, Sarah Palin in 2008. While Ms. Palin may not fit in the mold of the intellectual "ruling class" that Beltway insiders, Media types, and urban center "progressives" seem to worship, Ms. Palin, and so many of the other TEA Party supported candidates, posses in spades what so many of the media supported intellectuals seem to lack totally--commons sense, a gut-level understanding of the dreams and challenges of the vast majority of citizens living in "fly over" country, and practical knowledge of the basic laws of economics, the most obvious precept of which is that economics is the science of people making choices.

The Ruling Class invariably thinks that they can force people to behave in some ideal way by experimenting in social engineering by manipulating financial, educational, social, and financial systems. Yet they are so consistently and invariably surprised that changing the rules and incentives of the game triggers changes in human behavior that none of them seem to have been able to predict—although most of us in “flyover country” could! The Government decides to start teaching sex ed in the schools –and at the earliest possible age—creating an environment that facilitates kids experimenting in ways they are not intellectually or emotionally equipped to deal with --resulting in a 70% out of wedlock birthrate in the Black community, with the Caucasians closing in fast at almost 40%! Who knew? Anyone with common sense, perhaps? Congress decided it was a great idea to manipulate the financial system, threaten massive Civil Rights retaliation, and delay desired reforms if lenders don’t lend to minorities and poor, regardless of collateral, income, or ability to pay to enable the creation of millions of better citizens though home ownership! How sweet! How foolish! Home prices went through the roof and millions more started using their homes as ATMs. Now millions can’t make their new mortgage payments and are defaulting, millions more find themselves underwater on their mortgages--owing more than the home will sell for, and Congress triggered the worst economic environment since the Great Depression—but who knew? Again, anyone who actually has to live under a balanced budget and thereby learned some common sense, perhaps?

The examples can go on with political correctness, “comprehensive immigration reform”, anti-capitalism in public education, economic protectionism, “rent controls”, Obamacare, the Global Warming swindle and Cap and Tax, but you get the point. The existing political establishments have so regularly demonstrated that they have insufficient knowledge of the principles which made this nation the envy of the world, and such little to no practical economic or scientific experience, that they so invariably make bad choices that it’s almost statistically impossible to be so wrong—all the time—without doing so on purpose!

Oh and Colin, I was wondering, do you want to give up your SS check when you retire? It may be socialistic but there are thounsands of elderly people counting on that check to survive. I think FDR did a great job in forseeing future problems. I do believe the entitlements portion of SS needs to be revamped.

1/10 of 1%?? I think your decimal point is in the wrong place. Try anywhere from 6-10% depending on which strdy you use. The defense of marriage is a societal and cultural ground line. Marriage is about the propagation of the species and the promotion of a healthy society. While I understand that at times single parenting or gay couples with kids might be the best of a bunch of bad choices, you promote (i.e. "Marrage") the ideal, the nuclear family.

Are you trying to increase the percentage of "gays" in society by advocating that their marriage is the same as a traditional, 'since the beginning of history', biblical based family? If it's about health insurance, most companies and/or Obama's already given them that so quit advocating our cultural decline.

Anyone know which section of the Constitution authorizes social security? How many people know Otto Bismark came up with the original idea for social security and Adolph refined. FDR fits right in with these two great humanitarians. I just want back the money the government stole from me. Isn't taking something under duress stealing. Don't pay your FICA and see what happens. Lets call social security by it's correct name, "Stealing from you children and grandchildren." BTW, I am not a young kid, I turned 65 in Dec. and am getting back a very small portion of what the govt. stole from me.

Hello treeMack. Actually I thind our culture becomemore tolerant and less opressive in all things not just traditional marrage. Also 6 to 10 percent of of the population of America is alot of gay people. The polls to me are exajerated (sp)

Howard, by the time I am retirement eligible in 23 years, there won't be any more social security. But, hey, I am fine with them getting rid of it and all the other government charity and allowing the churches take over what is their responsibility in the first place. Why tithe now when we are mandated to do so through taxes (joking of course)? Our founding fathers had immense forethought and provided a viable solution for the role of government - too bad we got rid of the institution of slavery only to institutionally enslaven us all.

John Bostick

I believe Mr. Feder sees the gay issue as being the corrosion of society that it is. If the gays are only 1/10 of 1% of the population and they have already gained the foothold that they have the problem is much worse than he implies. I have quit watching TV because of their gay lifestyles being shoved down my throat via that media. I don’t understand how our government school system allows teaching an alternative to the male and female union for marriage. If the percentage of these freaks were say 1% of the population with the backing of the idiots in this country who continue to support them the laws would already be same sex marriages only. I suggest that we need to wake up to the fact that gay sex is perverted sexual deviance and should be against the law. Do you people who agree with these perverts think bestiality should be O.K. in the union of marriage? Sexual deviance is what is in question and people just allowing it because they have a family member or acquaintance afflicted with it. Our politicians wanting to satisfy everybody to get the vote keeps their hands tied from addressing it as being what it is. The term “politically correct” implies deception, dishonesty, and treachery. If you don’t like these truths please go back into the closet.

Grandson of Liberty

Bob, I heard recently the best defense of the institution of marriage. It goes like this: as a Christian, I defend the teachings of Christ. I don't defend only those which I agree with, but defend all and try hard to adjust to the Lord's ways. The Bible specifically states that homosexuality is prohibited and defines what marriage is. While I have nothing personal against homosexuals, in fact (and unfortunately), my daughter claims to be one, but to know the truth and not proclaim it or deny it is to abandon my Lord and His teachings, which my faith does not allow.

I guess they are all just a bunch of idiots like all their Hollywood backers. Drug and alchol abusers, homosexual backers, multi-divorcee, plastic surgery loving, etc. NUTS. The bad thing about it, is that our younger generation are looking up to these people. AND the government is forcing our students to be educated in their twisted ways. I attended a one room school house for six years, went on to graduate from high school, and exactly one week later was in Navy boot camp. I spent the next 20 years in the Navy, retiring because my first wife had cancer. She died 10 months later and I have had a rough life since then, but I think my education has taught me more than any of the idiots in Washington learned in their schools. U.S.NAVY 1958-1978

To all those that like to put down FDR and SS must remember to take a look at their paychecks. I paid more in SS when I was working (for 50 years) than I did income tax. The Government is not giving me anything I didn't earn. As a matter of fact, if the Government would pay back what they have taken from SS we wouldn't have any shortage. Bravo to Jim (Reader Comments, Sep 20)for making the often-blurry distinction between cuts in tax rates and cuts in tax revenues. We should ask our conservative leaders to vow that they will never again utter the phrase "Tax Cut" without making a similar distinction. For too long Democrats have exploited the muddled thinking of their supporters, leading them away from the somewhat counter-intuitive fact that cuts in the tax rate often lead to increases in revenue.

Regarding todays "Opinion in Brief" by Peggy Noonan:

A critical truth that is so often overlooked is that the left uses the same tactic that was common with diplomats representing Communist countries; "What's mine is mine and what's yours is negotiable". That approach is the underlying reason we always begin and end "compromise" toward the 36" end of the yardstick. Constitutionalists should begin and end at the zero mark and never be satisfied with 18 or even 8 as the aritcle suggests.

To those who suggest we can compromise with tyranny, I give you IICor6:14-16(NAS): What partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what agreement has the temple of God with idols?

The God who gave us Liberty and unalienable rights does not compromise or meet the enemy halfway. There can be no room for tyranny to enter into the negotiations and evil must be cast out by the strength of character of We The People.

We the people want our government and our country back; we don't give a royal flip about what either party wants, but we ALL know what we want. They were all jabbering last week about Ms. O'Donnell winning in Delaware and how that would cost the Republicans another seat in the Senate. Do they seriously think that just because she is a Tea Partier that she will vote Democrat? Get real, y'all, hopefully she will vote for what's good for the country over what the pols want.

My wife has a four year old Prius since she hauls dogs, kids and stuff. I am totally Conservative, except I am free of superstituous mysticism. I see absolutely nothing admirable about a gas guzzling vehicle which cannot get from point A to point B any quicker than mine unless the driver does not care if they have to pay an expensive speeding citation. You'll find that we Tennesseeans and those like us are the foundation of this country and some aweful hearty fighters! Semper Fi!

PS - Buck, you're my kind of guy!

I know Viper is the fastest US production car, but why did you have to pick a Dodge? Couldn't you have picked a Mustang...from the Ford Motor Company, who proudly DIDN'T take bailout cash?

Editor's Reply:

Since there's a viper (rattlesnake) on the Gadsden Flag, the owner seemed to think the Viper made sense. We'd have to agree.

I love the cartoon. Unfortunately, it is not far from the truth.

I have to agree with the comment by Don Feder concerning traditional marriage and the damage that could be caused if it is ever re-defined. God help us, as a nation, to stop being so myopic. The ripple-effect is so far-reaching and can do so much more damage than what we'll ever hear in the main stream media. Thank you, Mr. Feder, for exposing the "rest of the story".........it's not pretty sight.

Terence Jeffrey's comments on Government hit the nail spot on. Well said sir, well said!

This hasn't been a "Progressive" movement at all. It is REGRESSIVE. It takes us out of Liberty and self-reliance, and would return us to the dark condition of dependency upon and servitude to... The State.

Whether a King or a Nanny State, the result is the same and is counter to the Revolution of 1776.

God Save the Republic.

Mark: I like the idea of the pace car but I would have thought that you would have chosen a car from a company that is not owned by the unions and the government.

Every day brings me more to be disgusted by! Yet, the local and national news just keeps their eyes shut tight and asks no questions that would "upset" anyone in power. Thank God for great and honest news givers like Glenn Beck, Mike Huckabee, Hannity and O'Reilly on Fox News!

The obvious Muslim background and connection taken by the jerk in the White House is a total injustice to every real American, and I pray daily he and his high-falutin' vacationing family will be moving out soon! People better wake up and vote this year like it's an emergency....because, folks, it is!!

Regarding Don Feder's article "Faith and Family." The “path of life” created by God begins with 3 milestones:

(1) normal marriage (one man and one woman);

(2) conception (begotten);

(3) birth (of water and of breath)

Followed by 17-25 years of education and maturity

Each of these Milestones on the “path of life” is vitally important, precious and sacred, yet vulnerable and in need of our most vigilant protection. For without any one of these milestones, continuation of high quality life and society is impossible.

Unfortunately, our uneducated liberal Government leaders have allowed tax-payer funded flaggers to stand in front of each of the 3 milestones, distracting people from the “path of life” and encouraging them to take exit ramps down into the darkened path of immorality, abuse, emotional problems, disease, and early death.

Bubba says Obama's "getting his groove back." These lefties, ya gotta give it to them, they are consistent. It's high noon and they're all standing around arguing that it's dark outside.

For Obama's wife to teach us how to eat perhaps she should follow her own eating habits. Not only his bad eating habits but her's also. lobster daily is not the best food for anyone. Fancy dinner parties while many in country are suffering

Time to straighten out their own lives. No longer put people in Washington on a pedalstal.

Why have we not heard about this before now?

Nearly a million rifles.

Banned by Barack Obama and his anti-gun cronies.

In an executive order the Obama Administration has secretly blocked the re-importation of American made M-1 Garand and Carbine rifles being stored in South Korea.

These rifles were used by the US military during the Korean War and left there after the war was over.

With one stroke of his pen, he by-passed the legislative process and banned nearly a million American made rifles by executive fiat.

Peggy Noonan(Opinion in Brief, 20 September 2010) stated what I have been saying for the last 30 years. The Republicans have moved from their 12 inch mark, where they were in the 50's, to the 25 inch mark today. The Democrats (read Progressives) have moved from their 18 inch mark to 30 inchs and are still extremely unhappy with their "progress". I don't think the Progressives will be happy until they have achieved the 37, yes that is thirty-seven, inch mark.

The Invisible Hand, slapped by the visible hands of the reformers, is now forming a fist. The "oblivion" into which the US will be punched is foreshadowed by the EU, particularly satellites like Greece. Monster inflation seems a likely scenario.

Americans would do well to arrest this spendthrift momentum before the situation is as unrecoverable as the EU's population demographics. Monetary, reproductive and moral impoverishment seem to go skip along the same path. If not reversed, soon it may be the Mormons and the Muslims fighting it out, toe2toe. The rest will watch the match from their childless rocking chairs.

Why all the long paragraphs? Your reports would be much easier to read if you cut the paragraphs down to 3 or 4 lines each.

Doc, you can't be a true conservative. You drive what you choose to drive based on your personal values. You place more value on fuel economy than on performance or load capacity or any of a hundred equally valid reasons to drive a particular vehicle. I place more value on being able to take everyone and still carry a couple of dogs and pick up the groceries, feed and hardware. Does that make me a "Bubba"? Get over yourself and embrace true liberty. What works for you in your enviorment doesn't work for me in mine.

@ Bob Geigle re: 09 20 10 at 11:26 -- It is not about how weak or strong something is, Bob; it is about America being what it has been instead of being what would make the rest of the world happier.

There are other states where gay marriage is legal, but that forces other states - through the "Full Faith and Credit" clause - to buy into something that they do not want to accept. Of course, the civilized and well-mannered thing would be for gay people to behave the way they would prefer a straight couple behave in a gay bar - keep a lid on it until the company was more accepting of such behavior. It's all about being polite and aware of those around one.

Barring that, one could consider relocating to one of the scores of other countries around the world where - while not quite as nice or mellow as America - they welcome gay marriage.

@ Bob Geigle re: 09 20 10 at 13:29 -- I would say the blame for much of the deterioration of marriage as an institution in America can ble placed in three places: the government, for involving itself in the marriage; the lawyers, for capitalizing on divorce; and the individual American, for not refusing to allow themselves to be party to such a tragedy.

About Michelle Obama's comments recently on what we should feed our children, and basically ourselves. Being unemployed and a thrifty guy when I was doing well, I have a years worth of properly stored goods to get me by. I suggest that Michelle start storing her groceries while she came and has a fine nice White House, because in November we are going to drop the lid on her hubby. Fortunately, he has lost my vote as has the rest of his party. Mike
