The Foundation
"It is necessary for every American, with becoming energy to endeavor to stop the dissemination of principles evidently destructive of the cause for which they have bled. It must be the combined virtue of the rulers and of the people to do this, and to rescue and save their civil and religious rights from the outstretched arm of tyranny, which may appear under any mode or form of government." --Mercy Warren
Editorial Exegesis
Reid vows more obstruction"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has a novel conception of his job priorities. One recent day, the Nevada Democrat took it upon himself to lecture Republicans on how they should conduct their business. Claiming Republicans practiced 'obstructionism on steroids' in 2011, Reid said he hoped 'that they understand that everything doesn't have to be a fight. Legislation is an art of working together, building consensus, compromise. And I hope that the Tea Party doesn't have the influence in this next year that they had in the previous year.' ... In those same remarks, Reid offered this laugher about his party's purported efforts in 2011 to break the legislative deadlock between President Obama and Senate Democrats on one side and House Republicans on the other: 'I don't think ... anyone can question or they should question our having reached out to Republicans. We've done everything we could to work with them. We're going to continue to do that. In spite of the obstructionism, we have been able to accomplish a lot of good things in the last Congress.' Let it be noted, however, that the most prominent missing item among those 'good things' Reid claims to have accomplished was fulfilling one of the Senate's most basic constitutional duties -- approving an annual federal budget. ... National Journal reports that Reid told a meeting of his Democratic colleagues earlier this week that 'the party is positioned to dictate a congressional agenda designed to get most of its congressional members -- and President Obama -- re-elected. Working with the White House, Senate Democrats are plotting a 2012 floor agenda driven by Obama's re-election campaign and the fight for control of Congress. The year will see an intensified version of the course Democrats pursued this fall through votes on the president's jobs bill.' In other words, while blasting Republican 'obstructionism,' Reid is plotting systematic obstructionism throughout the coming months. This is spelled h-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y." --The Washington Examiner
What do you expect from congressional Democrats this year?
Upright
"[L]et us now, in full public view, credit [Barack Obama's] greatest public service as president: He is sending Americans back to the Constitution. ... Mr. Obama's overreach has provoked something unique. This is the rise of a populist movement with the historically unpopulist priorities of making the federal government smaller and insisting on its constitutional limits. ... You can say Mr. Obama probably will not like where a greater public familiarity with the Constitution is likely to take us politically. But you can't say the former University of Chicago professor hasn't made it exciting." --columnist William McGurn
"President Obama, man of the people, will deliver his presidential nomination acceptance speech at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. -- so that Democratic Party fundraisers can reward big donors with skyboxes and other lavish perks. ... The self-proclaimed Party of the 99 Percent is reportedly busy creating special-access VIP packages for the 1 percent -- under the illusion of throwing open its doors to the masses. DNC officials refuse to disclose fundraising updates until after the convention, even as they champion their own 'openness and accessibility.' And no doubt, Obama will use his stadium-size pulpit to 'stand up' to the very same 'fat cats' who'll be watching him while sipping Courvoisier in their DNC-appointed luxury seats. Such is the audacity of progressive cognitive dissonance." --columnist Michelle Malkin
"One of the weirdest things about Cornell West's recent rant on Fox News was that he is one of the highest-paid professors in the humanities in the United States ... yet he damned those who, like himself, are rich. ... With recent news that Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley professors, like the 1 Percenters at J.P. Morgan and Goldman-Sachs, were among Obama's most generous campaign contributors, I think we can discern the new three rules of fat-cattery: 1) Protestations of being liberal exempt you from the crime of being a 1 Percenter; 2) The less risk to your affluent status ... the more willing you are to put up with income-tax hikes, which renders you one of the good, blue 1 Percenters; 3) Damning Wall Street on Monday while shaking down Wall Street on Tuesday is just the way things are, whether for Barack Obama or for an Ivy League development dean." --historian Victor Davis Hanson
The Demo-gogues
Where to start with this one? "I'm not a perfect man. I'm not a perfect president, but I promise you this -- and I've kept this promise -- I will always tell you what I believe and I will always tell you where I stand. If you stick with me, we're going to finish what we started in 2008." --Barack Obama
That's the problem: "The reason I was successful was not because I was a flawless candidate or I ran a flawless campaign but it was because together we were able to give voice to this shared vision of what America should be. And I want you to know that I have kept faith with that vision all these years." -- Barack Obama
Nobody works harder than a bureaucrat: "[B]y the way, you won't meet harder working folks than some of the folks in these federal agencies -- devote countless hours to trying to make sure that they're serving the American people, but they will tell you their efforts are constantly undermined by an outdated bureaucratic maze." --Barack Obama
Belly Laugh of the Week: "As opposed to the Tea Party, which was practically a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party, we don't really have much of a connection with the Occupy [protesters]. In fact, they probably have some sentiments that overlap between the two [groups]." --House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
Race bait: "A white president, frankly, could be pushed a great deal more than we would push President Obama because nobody would accuse him or her of having partiality toward African-Americans. So its a tough spot -- it also means that we still have a long way to go in terms of race relations in this country and the president has, I think, moved through these troubled waters about as well as any African-American could becoming the first black president." --Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO)

Essential Liberty
"Last week, President Barack Obama, at a Capital Hilton fundraising event, told the crowd, 'We can't go back to this brand of you're-on-your-own economics.' ... President Obama's vision was shared by our Pilgrim Fathers of the Plymouth Colony in modern-day Massachusetts. They established a communist system. They all farmed together, and whatever they produced was put in a common storehouse. A certain amount of food was rationed to each person regardless of his contribution to the work. ... In 1623, after much debate, a new system was set up, in which every family was assigned a parcel of land, and whatever they produced belonged to the family. ... After Gov. Bradford's establishment of what Obama calls 'you're-on-your-own economics,' harvests were so bountiful that Bradford is credited with establishing what we now call Thanksgiving. ... Years ago, typing was done on a mechanical typewriter; milk was delivered to doorsteps via horse and wagon; slide rules were used to make calculations. Should any of these products and practices have survived, or was it OK for natural selection to consign them to the dustbin of history? Try cornering the president or his supporters, and ask them whether they believe government should ensure that the unfit survive and rather than 'you're-on-your-own economics' there should be 'you're-on-somebody-else economics.'" --economist Walter. E. Williams

Class warfare: "Here's what I've discovered. It seems to me you have two ways of looking at wealthy people. Some of us, most of us look at people like Steve Jobs, Spielberg, Iacocca, name brands, Gates. Self-made people who deserved their wealth because they went out and swung that pick and may have failed, but they succeeded. And there's other people always looking at it this way. 'Oh he had a break. He went to Harvard, the Business School.' His old man looked out for him, he had these connections and of course he's working for Bain. How did he get that job?" --MSNBC's Chris Matthews on Mitt Romney
So under-appreciated: "When given [Obama's] education, given that he was the first to head the Harvard Law Review, he could have made millions in the private corporate world. He chose, way before anyone ever thought he would be the president, to go back to Chicago and to work as a community organizer and to serve the underserved and the ignored." --"The Reverend" Al Sharpton
In what alternate universe? "They say the stimulus didn't work. The stimulus worked. It was just too small. While we had the stimulus, employment was rising. So, you know, the president knows what to do." --Salon's Joan Walsh
Non Compos Mentis: "Why Are Obama's Critics So Dumb?" --Newsweek cover story
Race bait II: "The fact that a conversation about the attitude and disposition of Mrs. Obama remains such a hot-button topic is a major disappointment for those who thought times would change after her husband's election in 2008. Many in the African-American community were certain the mere presence of Michelle Obama on the international stage would effect perceptions of black women worldwide. Surely it would be impossible to ignore the grace, charm and intellect of the 5'11" Chicago native, with her Harvard Law degree, committed marriage, and two young daughters." --Newsweek's Allison Samuels

Let them eat cake: "We absolutely live in a bubble. So I have to keep my kids on track to do things that we would do as if we weren't here. Whether it's vacation or camp or taking a trip we would normally take. It's letting them get outside of the bubble, to get them to a place. That's so important and I fight for that, for them." --Michelle Obama on taking million-dollar vacations
The horror: "[L]ast year we made history together by finally passing health reform. But now there are some folks actually talking about repealing this reform. So today, we must ask ourselves, are we going to stand by and let that happen? I mean, really? Are we going to let insurance companies refuse to cover things like cancer screening, prenatal care, that don't just save money, but they save lives? Or are we going to stand up for our lives and for the lives of the people that we love?" --Michelle Obama at a fundraiser

Blame Republicans: "I think it's very clear that the Republicans voted against the American Jobs Act each time when the whole act was before Congress, when each component part, practically all of them, the Republicans voted against it. ... They didn't like the way we were gonna pay for it. Where we were going to have a modest tax increase on those who are the wealthiest and they oppose that. They wanted to protect the wealthiest and as a result, the direct impact is going to be all across our country we're going to see layoffs of people who provide very vital resources -- services, to our communities." --senior Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett

More laws. Higher taxes and more of them! More government intervention in our lives. More loss of freedom. A march towards socialism!!!!! Especially if Obama wins re-election. It appears that he will because Republicans continue to beat up on each other instead of trying to find ways to support and complement each other. Also, the Republicans really don't have a 'real' jewel to beat Obama. God forbid because right now I really don't have anyone to vote for unless it is the Libertarian candidate for President!

She is not an angry woman. She is a hateful, racist woman and an ever present media-induced affront to the concept and values of the American Republic.

It is interesting that Mr. Reid should be lecturing Republicans on obstructing the work of the Congress when that is exactly what the Democrats did from 2006 to 2010. It is shameful behavior on both sides.
America's citizens deserve better and only get the worst possible legislation from our "hired help"! Americans don't have the capacity to hide behind the walls of the Capitol building or its offices. We are just overwhelmed by the bile spewing from these folks. Shameful, shameful behavior!

While obstructionism may be disagreeable Mr. Reid needs to understand that there are differing interests that need to be recognized.
We recognize these differences in interest with representation. 435 representatives in the house, 100 representatives in the senate.
The elected individual is my/your representative. It is expected that the person holding office will, in a stalwart manner, represent my interest even if it is not the interest of the elected representative from Nevada.
Perhaps the senator from NV needs to be informed of his purpose and the interest he is expected to represent. I don't want him to work in an obstructionist manner but I do want him to represent his constituency as I want my representative to represent me.
I may well be wrong in my interests but I hired/elected my congressman to represent me. And definitely not represent Harry Reid's interests.
Politics isn't about getting along and compromise. Its about getting your (or my) way. The reason people of differing opinions gather is to discuss and debate the merits of their position which is hopefully the position of their constituency. No more no less.
Compromise (~loser) is merely a polite name for refusing to work at representing the people that elected them to office.

Classic Harry Reid:
This guy can drop his pants and crap in the foyer of the Senate, then immediatley call a press conference where he will say -- in his soft, controlled voice expressing disgust, " I am so dissapointed in my Republican colleaques - it appears that one of them has defecated in the foyer... I am deeply troubled by this lack of civility by the Republicans - I thought they were honorable, but it appears that I was mistaken. As always, we will have to clean up the mess the Republicans have made."
I can see that happening.. The media never questions the absurdity of Reid's twisting distortions of the truth about what is happening on Capitol Hill. They will take his assertions at face value... "Damn those dastardly Republicans"

Your question: "What do I expect from Democrats?"
My answer: Continued socialist politics in order to create/maintain dependents on the federal government for their financial support ie food stamps, government housing, aid to dependent children, free benefits for illegals, etc., etc.
These people are brainwashed to believe in BIG GOVERNMENT, without citizens having to take responsibility for themselves and the children they produce. Many no longer believe in God, under whom the country was founded. HE WILL JUDGE INDIVIDUALS AND THE COUNTRY OVERALL.
Under democrats, the country would soon run out of money and resources and be a prime target for the bad guys of the world!

I forgot to mention that Democrats don’t have to pass any legislation. They did that in the run up to the mid-term elections in 2010. Since then the country has been operated using continuing resolutions (which pretty much continues the last budget). The only way Republicans can stop this strategy is to stop passing continuing resolutions. You know what the Democrats and their accomplices in the media will do with that result. I don’t think they care about anything but their political power.

Come this election year, I expect the Democrats to put up the nastiest fight ever seen by our country. Every trick of the trade will be used. More attacks on capitalism than ever before. As of today, we have more people than ever on the welfare dole, more long term unemployed... all the while degrading those that work hard, save for the future and invest for the next generation. No budget for over 1000 days, debt at 15 trillion and increasing... this is irresponsible...

A large segment of the elected officials of the Democratic Party would undoubtedly fail such testing miserably, thus opening up elective positions to those who can actually walk and chew gum at the same time.
In this vein, Senator Reid, is one who comes to mind. I believe that in his earlier days he used to box. Blows to the head can have a profound effect on the thought process thus anyone listening to the Senator shouldn't wonder why, for example, he believes the income tax is voluntary and is able to spend five minutes lecturing an interviewer on this subject.

It is amazing how people can disregard the Constitution they swore to uphold. They are hypocrites.
I just finished a call to Sen. Rubio's office thanking him for his stand on SOPA by removing his sponsorship from this terrible ugly legislation. I thank God for representatives who will listen.

@ Paul Brockman ... good point. The liberals love to float their little balloons to see what the people will tolerate as "truth." I would like to make one minor change, though. A lie told often enough doesn't "become the truth." It becomes perhaps like the truth, or a poor facsimile of the truth, or appears as truth. However, THE Truth will always remain genuine. And it is against that constant standard we must measure everything we see, hear, read. If it does not stand up to the Truth, toss it out. We must never allow anyone to "dumb down" the standard. Alas, though, it is already happening (and has been for quite some time); hence, we are daily experiencing the out-of-control downward spiral of our economy and the moral fabric of our once-great society. There is hope, but we must stand up for it and support those who champion authentic Truth.

without a doubt, the largest detriment to reviving

fact, it is obvious by their actions, that they
want more citizens to depend on them for more pro-

Nothing. I expect NOTHING. The American public has been screaming in frustration for years because Washington is so out of touch with voters. They see us when they visit the polling places but they do not understand what it is like to live as we do day to day. Our society has arrived at a point where the common man will never get elected. He (she) does not have the resources to compete. Knowledge of the topics is far down the list. We are presented with a variety of individuals that in the worst of circumstances few of us would choose. But each election we, to do our civic duty, show up at the polls to vote for someone that we all know will not represent our views when they get in office. And you wonder where voter apathy comes from. And the winner never fails our expectations. They have passed laws that exclude themselves, they vote for their own raises. They have facilities that are for their use only and are so far above anything you or I could join even with a paid membership. And we aren't allowed to see or investigate these perks. When one gets elected in the United States they are in an exclusive club. They will get paid as long as they live and have privileges that set us so far apart, I truly believe it is impossible for them to understand those who put them there. We the people can not change the law. Those who can will not suffer cuts at their own hand. Where does that leave us.

He needs a new job: Senate Minority Leader! When will the Republican Party stop trying to win points with the Democrats and start treating the Democrats the same way as the Democrats treat Republicans? The Republicans should oust the present Speaker of the House and not turn over the job of Senate Majority Leader to the present Senate Minority Leader. In light of Reid's speech (both to the Republicans in public session & the Democrats in closed planning) I would expect business pretty much as usual with the exception of the renewed antagnotic approach to 'aid the re-election' of Democrat representatives & Obama. Both desires to (re-elect & to force Democrat objectives in Congress) are a path of destruction for this great nation. Reid claims to have the true interests of the country in his approach but I would suggest that he read the Constitution (he may need a tutor to help him understand the big words)! I have never in my 60+ years seen a federal administration with so much disregard of the Constitution & Bill of Rights. It's been obvious early on that Unions control the democratic party. Under Obama and Reid, the party has divided this country. They support the OWS, and it's obvious that that group is full of union thugs, socialists, homosexuals, etc, etc.. God only knows what! The republican house has sent many jobs bills to Obama and Reid. none fell into their consideration.( Who are the obstructionists?) Simpson and Bowles sent Obama their recomendations on how to get theeconomy back on track, only to fall on deaf ears. Where are the unions that purport to needing jobs, only to keep backing Obama and his economy crushing agenda. Hipocrits all! Now we go to Governor Walker. After his legislation passed the house to take teacher unions out of the equation for having control of the costs of insurance for state workers, and now showing a surplus in their coffers, these unions, ( who control the ass party), are relentlessly trying to recall one of the bravest governors in our country. Why are the liberal democrats so dumbed down, and awe struck by this imposter in the white house? Puzzles me.

Mexico is a Nation, and the people of that Nation are Mexicans. Which is true of (North) America, these people are Americans. There is no race of Mexican, or Americans. It is a Nationality! Everyone (should) know this! Africa is a continent, also common knowledge. There are many Nationalities in Africa. The common description of a black person is the Latin derivative for black, Negro. The first glaring clue that the "birth certificate" was fabricated was the entry for "Race of Father" because some idiot entered African. Common descriptions are, or were, White, Negro, Indian, Oriental. Why do intelligent people continue to use the term African-American? There is no such person! The term preferred by Blacks that I know is that, black! The real racist, race baiters, in this Republic are Sharpton, Jackson, and the like. They are black American. African-American should be perceived as an insult. Obama is part Negro. He is part White. He is a mulatto, a mix. Negro, or Black is simply a pick for favoritism. The father is a black, a citizen of UK. How is BHO a "native born American?" He is not. He has used "black" as a pass to circumvent the laws of the Republic, and gotten away with it, so far.

Democrats ( and I use the term loosely ) are that in name only. These are not your grandma's Democrats. They have evolved,or devolved, into full - blown Social Fascists. A glaring example of how far they are willing to go is Wisconsin. The Commie Unions and Socialist PACs have pumped about $50,000,000.00 into the campaign to eliminate an effective and good conservative governor. Expect Obama to spend well over 1/4 BILLION dollars by election time 2012. In addition, the free ink he will get from the press, and the public money that he has spent and will continue to spend campaigning on your tax dollar will be incalculable, but approaching a value of another quarter billion. The Democrats have virtually unlimited funds and strong allies in the media. Expect them to pull every dirty trick in the book...
Whoever gets the nod in the Republican camp can expect an assault on their character and family that makes the virtual assassination of Sarah Palin look like child's play. The Democrats will lie, bring law suits, plant victims of false sexual attacks, pay indigent folks to canvas neighborhoods with propaganda, conspire at the highest levels to falsely accuse Republicans of the most vile acts, ramp up get out the vote events on campuses and churches, do deep research into recent deaths in states where no ID is required at the polls and pay and transport "voters" from one poling place to another to vote multiple times.
The Democrats will have free and unlimited access to the media under the false premise that their story is "news". Late show entertainers will gleefully host an endless stream of Democrat candidates and pundits who will humorously vilify the conservative candidates and cause. The term Teabaggers will become even more frequently used!
Use your imagination... Anything that can be imagined to obstruct, vilify, slander, denigrate, upset, blame, bribe, accuse, terrorize, marginalize, and generally make life very hard on Republicans will be standard practice for the Democrats.

Consider this comment more of a pet peeve than a reaction to the Chronicle's content. We just had MLK day. I long for the time when his challenge will be true that people will be judged by their character rather than their skin color. It is curious to me that we refer to Obama as the "first black president." Since his mother is described as "white" and his father as "black" how do we decide to label him "black?" I am sick and tired of our racial labels. Alternatives like "African-American" are no help. What does that mean? Does it refer to some connection in the past to another continent, and if so, how far back do you go, since the only real "Americans" from a continent point of view are native american tribes (of course they apparently were somewhere else some earlier time). What if you are "arabic" from Tripoli? Do we refer to Obama as black because of how dark his skin is? We boycotted South Africa for profiling by skin tone. If I choose to call Obama a "white" president, who can say I'm wrong? The whole conversation needs redemption. Focus on character and political worldview. It's much better, because it clearly separates between Barak Obama and the Republican candidates, as well as between the Republican candidtates. Color labels are distracting, unnecessary and irrelevant. If you need to see a candidate's face to make a decision, shame on you.

Don - I agree with you. People call Obama black because of his skin color, but it is a disturbing carry-over of "grandfather" laws, or the three-generation rule in Hitler's Germany - that if you have a black family member, however far back, that makes you a black person and you share in the fate accorded to all members of that race. But if we call Obama white, we'll be accused of trying to "whitewash" (!) his black background like it's something shameful. In other words, we are required to call him whatever he self-identifies as, which proves again that race is not a fact, but a construction.
