Bailouts are awesome: "On the day I took office, our auto industry was on the verge of collapse. Some even said we should let it die. With a million jobs at stake, I refused to let that happen. ... Today, General Motors is back on top as the world's number one automaker. Chrysler has grown faster in the U.S. than any major car company. ... We bet on American workers. We bet on American ingenuity. And tonight, the American auto industry is back." --Barack Obama

Bailouts are terrible: "It's time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody." --Barack Obama, later in the same SOTU

Policy based on envy: "We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number of Americans barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules." --Barack Obama

Conciliatory blame throwing: "The state of our union is getting stronger. And we've come too far to turn back now. As long as I'm president, I will work with anyone in this chamber to build on this momentum. But I intend to fight obstruction with action, and I will oppose any effort to return to the very same policies that brought on this economic crisis in the first place." --Barack Obama

Deciding how much money you can make: "[W]e need to change our tax code so that people like me, and an awful lot of members of Congress, pay our fair share of taxes. Tax reform should follow the Buffett rule: If you make more than $1 million a year, you should not pay less than 30 percent in taxes. ... A Note on the SOTU From Mark Alexander

There was not ONE SINGLE free-market economic remedy mentioned in Obama's entire teleprompted rhetoric last night -- every "solution" was government engineering by way of intervention, regulation or redistribution. Obama ended his recitation asserting, "We should all want a smarter more effective government." Indeed, on this we should all agree, and to that end, work tirelessly to defeat Obama and his socialist regime.

"President Obama delivered a State of the Union address Tuesday night that by the account of his own advisers is more campaign document than a plan for governing. ... In his State of the Union speech, Mr. Obama's emphasis on 'income inequality' and raising taxes for the rich raises important issues.

Raising taxes on the rich will give more money to government, government growth, greater dependency on government by the poorest and those who have the most influential lobbyists. Rather than taxing the rich in order for government to redistribute their wealth, shouldn't we the private sector take on the mantle of helping America be innovative and discover ways to encourage and enable the lower and middle thirds of our society to be entrepreneurial starting small businesses and being self-dependent and inter-dependent on other private sector institutions. Big businesses and the super-rich could help sponsor educational programs to instruct, encourage and fund start-up and on-going success efforts.

This approach to putting America back to work is what the American Dream has always been about, not depending on government to do for us what we can and should be doing for ourselves.

To be Harvard and Columbia educated he needs lessons in how to read well and how to speak to the people.

He has an I problem.

He has a problem accepting responsibility for his actions or lack thereof.

He "will work with congress" but he "won't," all in the same paragraph!

If he is reelected this country is doomed forever. It will be in worse shape than Somalia.

It sounded like your average campaign speech for any Republican or Democrat. Raise taxes or cut deductions to increase revenue and spend the money on helping America become great again. If having either Party in power made things better we would not be talking about this. Both Parties have the same tried and false plan, borrow and spend a bunch of money now and cut spending later.

I have as much faith in Obama ending the perpetual Fannie and Freddie bailouts as I do any Republican, except Ron Paul.

It was most painful to have to suffer through this warmed over re-election pep talk, so I was only able to stand about eight minutes before I turned it off. It was made worse by his annoying up and down elocution and by his monotonous reminder how the country is doomed unless we surrender our freedom and possessions to his hare-brained plans to feed his big government spending machine. The Republican response was far more pleasant to absorb and more sensible.

When our ?president? ran for office we were deceived into believing in "his" words of hope and change, when spiritually, America is looking for The Lord, and His Words, to believe in. I pray America will wake up, spiritually, and realize who

we are in need of, in Jesus' Name. (mortal, self-exalting,deceiving words, or GOD'S Words)

I pray that we realize how much "?faith?" we are putting in our words ("this is going to happen,

or that bad thing is going to happen"), and ignore Romans 4:17--to speak of things that are not, as though they will be, thru our GOD. GOD'S Test? ..to believe in His Words, or mortal words of man.

His speech last night was totally contradictory to what he has been doing the last three years. Obama's promise in the SOTU address to open the flood gate of Executive Orders even wider in order to circumvent the will of Congress must be taken seriously, just as his 2008 victory statement he was going to transform America is coming true. His passing, seemingly offhand remarks are the most telling.

'Fair Share' is a mostly socialist concept, and is as undefined as 'pornography'.

I'm for the Buffet rule. While should GOP candidates pay 15% or less while I'm stuck at a little over 30%.

Hey fed up, In Alabama, we have a county that is bankrupt, no money and they were plastered by a 1st of what may be another active year in Tornadoes. Now they're screaming for federal aid. Where is the money going to come from? I'm afraid there is a love hate relationship. Less Federal gov, we need the Fed gov.

We need to get on the same page. and work together. The Tea party was elected to created Jobs. Whee are they? No one elected them for a moral change.

In Ohio the gov threw out a GOP laws who wasn't going to vote for his bill attacking unions. The people slammed him at over 2-1 margin. Those who read my comments know I always say vote the will of the people not an idealouge. he was only 1-13. Now Wisc might be on the chopping block for the same reason. In Ind, the GOP said, they will vote out of office and recall any GOP member who votes to make it a right to work state. Again, will of the people and now they are pushing back

We can poke fun of various aspects of the speech however the fact remains no one is listening or doing the will of the people. In Mich, there is no free elections, yet we are worried about what the DNC are doing. I'm more concerned about what we are doing. We sign pledges to a lobbyist (Norquist) then say, wait, the DNC wants a tax break, we can't do it. I don't need a speech to know both sides of the Isle is broken. Congressional 8-13% approval rating. That is what you should worry about. We should worry about no birth control period, we should worry about usury. If Mitt get in office, let everyone be foreclosed one and let them become renters, no more middle class and the wealth, the American dream now flows to the 1%. the keyword I heard int he speech in class warfare. If Mitt has his way, most of you won't be living in your homes, have the protection of a minimum wage, or Health care.

My friends, a speech from an orator is the last thing we should worry about. I concur spending and borrowing might not be the way to go but does anyone have any other solutions?

It seemed he really did believe some of what he said in tonight's very artfully done campaign speech. It is always entertaining listening to him tell you what he did knowing full well what he actually did. A few of the really blatant attempts at misleading Americans stood out. One was this quote regarding Warren Buffet and his secretary..."But asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary in taxes..." Of course his spinmeisters will be able to say he meant pay the same tax RATE. But that is not what he said and it is not what he wanted some in America to hear. Buffett pays millions of dollars more in taxes than his secretary, regardless if the rate is less, because of capital tax gains rates. Another example was talking about the debt ceiling fight last year. He said it was bout whether America was going to pay its bills or not. NO!!! It was about FORCING the Federal Government to live within its means and come up with REAL spending cuts that might someday allow America to live within its means. Another example was his statements about proposing plans to restore our military greatness while cutting $1/2 trillion in Defense spending. Panning the audience no one in uniform was clapping and the looks on the JCS faces were cold as ice. He has already relieved the military of part of their mission. No one should buy into the idea that President Obama wished to have a strong and proud military. It rings quite hollow. Then there were the points he tried to make that few American believe he really aspires to achieve or supports. Taking credit for military action in Iraq and Afghanistan and UBL, invoking the flag analogy, cut deficit by $2T, wants to tear down business blocking regulations, taking credit for opening up oil leases, channeling Abe Lincoln "Gov't should do for people only what they can't do for themselves and no more", my healthcare law relies on a reformed private market, channeling President Bush regarding the mideast Arab Spring being supported by America promoting liberty, democracy and free markets.

One of the most glaring problems with the campaign speech tonight was the rosy, upbeat nature. As Mitch Daniels said, the state of the union is GRAVE. The President took no credit and made no reference to the massive, crushing debt, and still uncontrolled escalation in spending that jeopardizes America's very future. His brief comments regarding the debt were contradictory and incredible. He said US corporate tax rate was highest in the world and led you to believe he was for doing something about that, but if you listen closely he did not propose anything to deal with that problem. Instead he proposed targeting tax BREAKS for businesses that are willing to return manufacturing jobs to America.....but listen even closer and he only wants businesses he LIKES to return to America, thus the double tax breaks for tech businesses......again, big brother picking winners and losers. He talked about extending the payroll tax deduction. He talked about green energy tax breaks for businesses. ALL OF THESE MEASURES EXACERBATE THE DEBT!!! Is that not obvious to us, yet he stated them in the context of dealing with the debt. How would that work Mr President?

He threw sand in Congresses eyes by bringing up his no-recess appointment of Cordray and telling Congress again, if you won't act I will. He refered to Illegal Immigration, which I am sure ticked off the radical left in his base. He admitted the housing collapse was the instigator of the economic downturn......I guess since Chris Dodd is gone and Barney Frank said he is leaving, it is now ok to tell the truth on that issue.

Taking “free” anything from the Feds is your entry ticket to the neo-plantation as a slave of the Imperial Federal Government. The current US Federal Government treats the American citizen worst than the British Parliament and King George III! Freedom and liberty are being continually eroded!

Last year, Americans voluntarily contributed nearly 300 Billion dollars to charities of all kinds. It was done for a variety of reasons from the purest to the foulest of reasons. But it was VOULUNTARY ! The recipients were grateful to received these gifts and appreciated the fact that others cared about their situation. The giver feels better about where they invest their charitable giving and the recipients are aware others truly do care about them.

Do you really want “economic justice” that is simply a code word for communism to be the focus and goal of the US government? Not to mention eventual total control of everything else imaginable!

This comment box is not user friendly. Gun laws are sufficient, just not enforced. There have been so many illegally obtained guns on the black market for the last 50 years that they can never be controlled. This has nothing to do with legally obtained guns, by responsible citizens who want to defend themselves and their families from criminal attacks by thugs or cartels with illegally obtained guns. Part of the problem has been shoddy inventory control by Police and Military and crooked gun dealers. Where do you think illegally obtained guns come from? The Gun Fairy? Crime goes down in an area where responsible citizens are legally licensed to carry firearms. A criminal is less likely to commit crimes in areas where citizens have or may have firearms. Take away guns from responsible armed citizens and only Police and criminals will be armed, and we all know or should know, Police cannot stop us from being shot or stabbed or attacked at random or intentionally by armed criminals, because they are reactive not proactive. They respond after the crime is already in progress or over, by design. Armed responsible citizens can respond in real time if they are attacked or their loved ones or friends are attacked. Good "Gun Control" is the ability to hit your target under stress to be able to protect yourself and others and "Neutralize The Threat"!!! Needless to say I support "My" 2nd Amendment right "and Responsibility" to bear arms!!!

WASHINGTON -- Billionaire investor Warren Buffett isn’t as undertaxed as he and President Obama seem to think.

Buffett recently said that he paid only $6.9 million in taxes last year -- just 17.4 percent of his earnings, compared to an income tax rate of about 36 percent paid by his employees.

“My friends and I have been coddled long enough by a billionaire-friendly Congress. It’s time for our government to get serious about shared sacrifice,” Buffett wrote last month in the New York Times.

Such grousing was enough to convince Obama to name his latest tax-the-rich scheme the “Buffett rule.” But it doesn’t tell the whole story.

And yesterday, Obama invoked Buffett’s name again in his case for imposing higher taxes on the wealthy, when he said: “Middle-class families shouldn’t pay higher taxes than millionaires and billionaires.’’

“It’s hard to argue against that. Warren Buffett’s secretary shouldn’t pay a higher tax rate than Warren Buffett. There is no justification for it,’’ Obama said.

Buffett actually was taxed twice on his investment income.

First, Buffett had to make the money he invested. Those earnings were taxed as corporate income, at about a 35-percent rate.

Then, Uncle Sam took another cut when Buffett invested the money and earned a profit. That’s when Buffett paid the 15 percent capital-gains tax rate.

All told, after combining corporate taxes and capital gains taxes, Buffett forked over about 45 percent of his earnings.

For example, say you make $100,000 a year and pay $28,000 in taxes, at flat 28% tax rate. That's a whole lot of taxes in my opinion, but.

And Romney and other rich people make, say, $10,000,000 a year and pay $15,000,000, at 15% tax rate.

Do you really think it is unfair that you paid $28,000 and he or they paid $15 MILLION? The rich pay 30% of our taxes already. But that is not enough?

Perhaps the 30% the socialist wants the rich to pay will go towards his and the "states" dependents, that is, the chronic welfare recipients.

I got of class at about 8:00 p.m. last night and decided to listen to the radio on the way home. I began flipping through the channels ... commercial ... song I don't like ... commercial ... commercial ... I got to our local talk radio channel just in time to hear Obama blurt out "Fascist!" ... commercial ... song I don't like ... Two clicks in, I realized what I had just heard: a tiny blurb from the SOTU! Priceless. I had a good laugh for a couple of minutes as I mulled over the irony. I settled on a Brad Paisley/Carrie Underwood duet as I sighed over the sad state of our union.

We can't get rid of Obama soon enough.

I personally wonder about the timing of the narcissist in chief's speech and the Somali pirate rescue... one might be tempted to think this military action was delayed (they were captured in October and Obummer authorized the rescue Monday) to coincide with Obummer's campaign, err, SOTU speech.

All I heard on the MSM so far today is how Obummer praised Panetta prior to his speech and nothing on the issues that weren't brought up during the SOTU (accomplishments, legislation, the economy, jobs, welfare reform, etc.).

Few people would consider it fair if the price charged for consumer goods (e.g., an automobile) depended on the income of the buyer. So why is it "fair" to charge the wealthy a higher price for government services (I.e.,more income taxes), just because they can afford it? How does the IRS, which extracts money from individuals using threats, differ from a thug on the street who demands your wallet?

Of course we need to fund essential government services such as national defense, but fairness demands (a) elimination of all government activities that are not absolutely essential, and (b) replacement of the income tax with a consumption-based tax such as a national sales tax. The 16th Amendment to the Constitution was a terrible mistake that must be repealed.

Since President Obama respectfully declines to take credit for what he has accomplished in his first 3 years in office, he opts to build more pie-in-the-sky promises for what he's going to do. How do we hold him accountable for what he's done as opposed to what he's promised? Find out in November, if the GOP primary candidates can find time to point it out instead of bashing each other's brains out over inconsequential trivia.

I find it highly irritating that POTUS promises that "It's time to apply the same rules from top to bottom: No bailouts, no handouts, and no copouts. An America built to last insists on responsibility from everybody. ... we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules." Particularly since this GM Stockholder was shoved aside so his UAW could reap the benefits of the fascist takeover of that company, complete with benefit of bailouts. The President who presided over the Solyndra fiasco and others like it, pressuring the Energy Dept. to give taxpayer backed loan guarantees to major campaign contributors talking about "No bailouts, no handouts, and no cop outs". Please. Every policy shortcoming is accompanied by the cop out of the day, whether it is President Bush, the tsunami, obstructionists in Congress, millionaires and billionaires, corporate jets, ATMS, ad infinitum.

Note to the Washington Post: The reason President Obama didn't talk about your presumed "factors that precipitated the violence" in the AZ tragedy that resulted in Rep. Giffords injuries - his AG and ATF agencies were busy doing exactly what you decry in the failed "Fast & Furious" gun-running to Mexican Drug Lord fiasco. Even Barack Hussein Obama isn't capable of pulling off that level of hubris.

The point in the state of the union address by Obama last night that stood out for me was when he quoted President Lincoln stating that "government should only do for the people what they cannot do for themselves, and nothing more". If only his first three years in office reflected that statement. Obviously, through the bills and executive orders that he has enacted, he doesn't feel the American People are capable of doing anything for themselves without government oversight, regulation, or intervention. If he honestly believes in the quotation by Lincoln, then

his entire presidency has been nothing but one of

hypocrisy. And if you look at the facts, they bear this analysis out. He is basically a narcissist who is going to save us from ourselves. The only problem is, myself and the rest of the country does not need to be saved from ourselves, we need to be saved from him, and the rest of the socialist, marxist, progressive liberals like him. The rest of his state of the union speech was basically how he was going to save us (do for us what we cannot do for ourselves)in typical Obama big government, big brother style.

Heaven help us all if he gets re-elected in November

RE Fed UP: I'm probably a little from Column a and a little from Column b. Allow me to clarify. It's not the amount dollar you pay, it's the percentage. I feel if I pay x amount then they should pay x amount. I just watched Megyn Kelly who addressed this very question on FOX News. No one disputed everyone should pay the same so they did the classic misdirection. The Administration is wasting money and here's how. We all know they waste money. That wasn't the question, the question is should everyone pay the same.

As for being a socialist, in some ways I am. I went to college on the GI bill, I financed my home with the VA mortgage, I receive some of my meds from the VA Medical Center. All of these are by definition socialist programs. In Alabama, they were hit hard again with tornadoes. They will no doubt have there congressman request federal aide, the same of what Cantor did during the earthquake, these are socialist programs.

The debate before last I listen to the candidates say, kill Obama care, kill aid to the schools, replace them with block grants. this predisposes two questions. A, where do we find the money, be, they are socialist programs.

An commentator above said, throw out the president, throw out Congress. I concur for only maybe then we can concentrate on fixing this country.

One of the problems we faced and Obama tried to gloss over is some of the things I harp on, these problems will always be there. They key is how to bring Conservative, Constitutionalists, Progressives, Centrist, and Liberals together under one banner and make this country great again.

Where I live, everyone has there hand out. I admire the southern part of the country for they don't have there hand out, they have neighbor helping neighbor. This is how it should be but we all got hooked on big brother and for that we pay the price.

Obama has no clue how to do any of the above and his speech in part proved it.

RK: I have a suggest for you. Open up a Charles Schwab brokerage account, take some of your spare cash laying around, and invest in some mutual funds, and hold them for awhile, and you too can pay only 15% on the earnings. Just because someone does what Romney does, doesn't keep you from doing the same.

I think you're on the right track. Regarding income disparity and who pays taxes, and who doesn't, the focus should not be on the wealthy. The focus should be on the poor; it should be focused like a laser beam on the 47% of Americans who don't pay Federal Income taxes.

Somehow, that 47% must be made to pay federal income taxes (remember that if Obama really wants everyone to play by the same set of rules, then those people must pay).

But they can't pay because they don't make enough money to be able to support themselves AND pay taxes. So the liberal focus goes onto the wealthy, to redistribute their money over to the nontaxpayers.

Most people don't realize the social costs of this process. Since the 47% don't pay federal income taxes, when they go to the polls to vote, they don't go in there seeking candidates who will cut their taxes, they go in there seeking candidates who will increase OTHER PEOPLES' TAXES.

It is interesting to note that former active military are very much of the same mind. Mr. Obama would not survive the "shift colors" ceremony in an active fighting unit. The one plaudit I may present to Mr. Obama is that he has, it seems, quickened the American populace to the civic duty of voting. Let us hope! As most, I preferred more intelligent entertainment and did not waste time on the SOTU address.

The outcomes of the ongoing primaries is, indeed, becoming most enlightening. The winnowing process is working, again. May we discard the chaff, this time? No more campaign rhetoric at SOTU!

Gun "control" (again). Removing all firearms from the populace is an absolute impossibility. The only outcome of "gun control" is to disarm honest people. We need only look to England, et al, to prove that. There is no language in the Second Amendment that is unclear; "---shall not be infringed." That is the only "license" one should require. It is the inappropriate use of firearms that require legislation. To threaten another with loss of life, or serious injury, to obtain an illegal gain (eg;robbery), ought to be the issue addressed. The only purpose of "controlling" (read eliminating) firearms in the populace is to permit control of that populace. The Framers understood that well, and that is why the Second was created. Most came from England, and well knew the outcome of a disarmed public. As it is today!

A fervent hope is that Mr. Obama is removed, sooner rather than later, to prevent the mischief he will work if he is defeated in November. If he is not? Keep your powder dry.

Obama stated that those people making over one million dollars a year should not pay less than 30 percent tax rate. Those making under $250,000, their taxes should not go up. What about the people who make betweet $250,000 and $1 million dollars a year. What are they to pay? Guess they are left out of his equasion. I would think those making over $1 million dollars a year are the ones who are providing most of the jobs.

Several aspects of Mr. Obama's SOTU address concern me.

1. Where does the Federal government get the authority to require states to keep children in school to age 18 or graduation? Good idea, but not the Feds responsibility.

2. If Obama wants everybody to pay their fair share and compete on a level playing field, does that mean he'll rescind the exemptions given to favored companies and unions to ObamaCare?

3. Does he really believe his comment that Buffet's lower tax rate than his secretary is unfair and then his saying Buffet pays less in taxes than his secretary will be seen as an error rather than a blatant play to the Left?

4. Why does he say he supports vets when he's raising costs on military healthcare for retirees and closing military hospitals?

5. Why does he advocate a doubling of the Capital Gains tax in the midst of a weak, if not debatable, recovery?

6. Why does he praise our military personnel when he's taking away many of the tools from them to do their job?

7. Considering his appointment of unconfirmed czars and unconstitutional appoints without senate approval why does he believe we should give him the right to organize agencies as he wishes?

There were many proposals which we conservatives and libertarians could support. However, as is said, the devil is in the details. The question is how do we get there and even if certain goes are well meaning, are they constitutional? Have we forgotten the adage that the road to hell is often paved with the best of intentions?

A Constitutional amendment is not something to be taken lightly, and it should reflect the intent of the founders while recognizing change. The requirement for a periodic address by the President to the Congress on the state of the Union was written at a time when the Congress met less often, and the members were out of communication when not in session.

Now, with a Congress in session most of the year and modern telecommunications there is no need for the Executive to inform the Congress, and thereby the constituents, on the state of the Union. The annual address has deteriorated into a partisan presentation, whichever party has the Presidency.

The latest address was one of the most partisan and ideological I've heard. It is time to eliminate this Constitutional requirement - which has become a forum for a campaign speech.

The original intent will not suffer by eliminating it, when the president can go on late night TV and claim network time for any speech there is no loss to the people of information on the state of the Union. In fact, given the communications in general, we can figure it out for ourselves. We are no longer scattered in rural or urban locations where the news has to be delivered on horseback.

In the amendment I might substitute a requirement that the President notify the Congress, and thereby the public, of the financial and security position of the Union. I think that is what was intended orginally - an assessment of the current state of the Union, not a speech on the future plans of an administration.

Frankly, what I think about his SOTU address (or was that a re-election speech, thinly disguised as the SOTU address?)mean absolutely nothing in the big scheme of things. There was statement/request/objective that bothered me. That was when he said he was going to reorganize/centralize the Executive Branch, as it was inefficient. Keep in mind this guy has done an admirable job of keeping his pre-election promises. Now, in my way of thinking, a more centralized Executive Branch of government is not what we need or want. Besides taking into account some African, Middle Eastern, and Far Eastern countries, whose form of government is basically a dictatorship; the last time I remember hearing of a Chief of State wanting to consolidate power was Uncle Joe Stalin. Of course he had Mr. Hitler as a model. He was right in one of his SOTU statements, the next election will be about choice in the America faces the future. What will your choice be?

He talks about more jobs, and yet turns down the pipeline which could have hired thousands of people, and then takes the military out of Afganistan and doesn't realize that will make thousands of more people without jobs..in additon the main role of government is to protect the nation from enemies that would destroy us.
