Poisoning the well of political rhetoricPolitical Futures
"The Republican candidates' circular firing squad now seems to be using machine guns. Whoever the eventual 'last man standing' turns out to be, he may not be standing very tall or very steadily on his feet -- and he may be a pushover for Barack Obama in the general election, thanks to fellow Republicans. Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican or an independent, this is a very serious and historically crucial time for the United States of America. ... 'The politics of personal destruction' -- as Bill Clinton called it, and as he himself practiced it -- is not the way to solve the nation's problems. It has already poisoned the well of political discourse this season and claimed Herman Cain as its first victim, on the basis of unsubstantiated accusations by women with checkered pasts of their own. Whether Herman Cain was good, bad or indifferent as a candidate, and whether his chances of winning the Republican nomination were substantial or non-existent is not the issue. Nor is this the issue as regards Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney or any other candidate. Poisoning the well of political discourse may be one of the reasons why we see such unsatisfactory sets of candidates for political office in both parties, not only this year but in previous election years as well. ... The time is long overdue to get serious." --economist Thomas Sowell
For the Record
"What it appears we are seeing is a new iteration of the age-old split between the grassroots and a perceived GOP establishment. It is like the split between the Goldwater forces and the Rockefeller wing of the party in the 1960s. It is an update of the split between the Buchanan brigades and the establishment in 1992. It is the old True Conservative versus Ambivalent Accomodationist split. Actually it's more a wound than a split, and the only one who healed it in our time was Ronald Reagan. He did it in three ways. He did it by being definitive: We believe in this and this, not that. He healed it by winning: Two landslides told everyone in the party who'd resisted him what time it was. And he healed it by governing well: By 1989, everyone who'd fought him within the party had to look at the results of what he'd done -- the comeback of the U.S. economy, the fall of the Berlin Wall -- and admit that it worked. The healing lasted roughly a quarter-century, until the second Bush administration, when everything began to come apart again. The GOP was now a party split on spending, immigration, a dozen other issues. It was rocked even more than it knew by the crash of 2008, and further sundered. The question now is whether the old split, the old wound, is tearing open in a deeper and more definitive way, in the first real presidential contest since the great healing went fully by the boards." --columnist Peggy Noonan
Opinion in Brief
"Newt [Gingrich] has committed himself to a lunar colony by the end of his second term, and, while pandering to an audience on Florida's 'Space Coast,' added that, as soon as there were 13,000 American settlers on the moon, they could apply for statehood. ... There are times for dreaming big dreams, and there are times to wake up. This country will not be going to the moon, any more than the British or French do. Because, in decline, the horizons shrivel. The only thing that's going to be on the moon is the debt ceiling. Before we can make any more giant leaps for mankind, we have to make one small, dull, prosaic, earthbound step here at home -- and stop. Stop the massive expansion of micro-regulatory government, and then reverse it. Obama has vowed to press on. If Romney and Gingrich can't get serious about it, he'll get his way." --columnist Mark Steyn
Essential Liberty
"The president began [his State of the Union address] with a moving tribute to the armed forces and their accomplishments. But as he has done many times now, he celebrated martial virtues not to rally support for the military, but to cover himself in glory -- he killed Osama bin Laden! -- and to convince the American people that they should fall in line and march in lockstep. ... What Obama is saying, quite plainly, is that America would be better off if it wasn't America any longer. He's making the case not for American exceptionalism, but Spartan exceptionalism. ... Indeed, Obama is upending the very point of a military in a free society. We have a military to keep our society free. We do not have a military to teach us the best way to give up our freedom. ... The promise of American life for Obama is that if we all try our best and work our hardest, we can be like a military unit striving for a single goal. I've seen pictures of that from North Korea. No thank you, Mr. President. ... This nation isn't great because we work as a team with the president as our captain. America is great because America is free. It is great not because we put our self-interest aside, but because we have the right to pursue happiness." --columnist Jonah Goldberg

The Gipper
"How can we not believe in the greatness of America? How can we not do what is right and needed to preserve this last best hope of man on Earth? After all our struggles to restore America, to revive confidence in our country, hope for our future, after all our hard-won victories earned through the patience and courage of every citizen, we cannot, must not, and will not turn back." --Ronald Reagan
Re: The Left
"As the country's first African-American president, Barack Obama had the chance to lead poor African-Americans out of poverty by encouraging them to embrace the principles that would allow them to become self-reliant instead of stoking envy of the successful. He had that responsibility. He has failed to live up to it. That is a tragedy, not only for him, but for those he left behind. Envy has never created a single job, put a family back together, encouraged a man to provide for his children or endowed young women with the kind of self-regard that would encourage them not to create children they too often neglect. The state of many poor African-Americans remains how it has been for years -- too many fatherless children, too many uneducated, hopeless women and too many men in prison. President Obama might have done something about that beyond more government programs and handouts. ... Addicting more and more people to government and the view that others owe them a living is the worst form of covetousness. In case the president missed it in Jeremiah Wright's church, there's a commandment against coveting your neighbor's property." --columnist Cal Thomas
Insight
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself." --Roman statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero (106-43 BC)
Faith & Family
"The official Republican response to the President's State of the Union Address was fine -- as far as it went. But Gov. Mitch Daniels missed a golden opportunity to put before the American people a better vision of family, faith, and freedom. ... [G]ov. Daniels could have noted that the policies of the Obama administration are the most antagonistic to the family of any administration in history. This is a fact. With 42% of American children born out-of-wedlock, a tragedy of fatherlessness is being visited on millions of homes. Bill Bennett rightly calls this 'the broken hearth.' And broken hearths lead to broken hearts. Does the president address this in his budget? No. Instead, he gives hundreds of millions to Planned Parenthood, the world's leading trafficker in abortion. ... Yet, President Obama has told Speaker Boehner that any cut in federal funds for Planned Parenthood is 'a non-starter.' President Obama has relentlessly pushed abortion at home and abroad. Obamacare is the most massive expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. Under Obamacare, health care coverage will include abortion. Thus, we will all be forced to pay for the killing of unborn children. ... To the fires of social discord this administration is adding fuel. To those on the lower rungs of life's ladder, asserting their God-given right to rise, this administration is breaking the first rungs." --columnist Ken Blackwell

"Thank you for putting up with (enduring) the president's SOTU address (propaganda and blame game tirade) to produce Obama's State of Disunion. I could not bring myself to listen to his lies, propaganda and spin-doctoring to hoodwink the people (those sheeple that will listen anyway). Either he is incompetent or he is decidedly trying to destroy America and freedom and capitalism. You cannot have it both ways: It is one or the other. Either way, he must go this year and should have been impeached already." --Rod
Editor's Reply: Suffice it to say, it is very difficult to tolerate just seconds of Obama's rhetoric, but somebody had to do it!"I left Cuba in 1961 because an undercover leftist communist lied to very smart people and duped them into getting him to power. As with all revolutions, once in control it ate its children.
Now I listen to Obama and when I talk to 'very smart' people that voted for him and ask them if they still believe that he is 'THE ONE,' they are too ambivalent to admit that they made a mistake. If we do not get rid of him and his cronies in November the damage to this our beloved country may be irreversible." --Juan

"I am amazed that this publication would bash the president. I am for people paying their fair share of taxes. I am the middle class that gets burned every time a Republican gets into office so you misguided people need to read up on the issues and see just what policies were in place before Obama got elected that the Republicans are blaming him for I will sit down and debate any American on Republican views and how out of touch you really are." --Judy

"The only 'fair tax' rate is a flat tax rate. Any other 'progressive' tax scale is a violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Why should anyone pay a higher or lower rate than anyone else? Aren't we constantly being lectured on everyone being treated equally?" --Major Stu
"Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas is now among my heroes. If only more people would let this president know how unpopular he truly is ... well, I guess it would make no difference to the narcissist." --Walt
The Last Word
"[I] suppose most of you have heard about the policy recently introduced in Washington, D.C., mandating that exterminators treat rats as if they were an endangered species, and transport them painlessly to a different location. When I first heard the news, I threw my hat in the air and hollered 'Hurrah!' The letdown came a few minutes later when I found out they were talking about actual four-legged rodents and not Harry Reid and his cronies in Congress. Although it is difficult to understand why D.C. politicians would create such a goofy program, I suspect the answer lies in the old joke about the reason that sharks never attack lawyers swimming in the ocean; namely, professional courtesy." --columnist Burt Prelutsky

I supported Mitt Romney over John McCain four years ago. However, I fault Romney for creating this mess. His well-financed, onslaught of mudslinging (specifically at Newt Gingrich) created the situation they are now in. Geingrich tried to keep things above board until he was attacked in Iowa, and then in South Carolina. After that it was "respond-in-kind" for survival. I'll vote for Mitt if he ends up winning the nomination, but am very disappointed in his tactics and won't send him a dime for his campaign. If he thinks he can use his millions to slime his way to a nomination, so be it. Then he can finance his own campaign against Obama also. So much for integrity.

Roman statesman and Prophet. He describes Obama thousands of years before his miraculous appearance. Sly one indeed. Take over Congress, and impeach the traitor should he win again. While the candidates shoot each other, remember, a Constitutional Congress can send legislation to whomever gets the nominatin and defeats Chairman Obamao. Vote for the eventual nominee, and encourage all who are able to do the same, carpool, offer rides, make sure every elligible vote is cast, because the opposition has many dead and fraudulent votes to cast.

Having been a republican for more than 40 yrs I have seen my fair share of stupid politics but what the candidates are doing now only plays into obama's hands. The issues are this is the worst president since woodrow wilson. Focus on obama and noty each other focus on his failed policies and what you are going to do to fix it. The voters are smart enough to figure out which policies we want. Quit the school yard garbage

The candidates need to stop trashing each other and convince the American people why they should support one or the other.
The country will not survive four more years under the audacity and rule of Obama. It is headed for an armed revolt by the American people.
None of the candidates are perfect. They are human. If Obama wins reelection you can blame it on the destruction of the Republican Party. I am not interested in what the establishment republicans want, they have not done their job and not won the confidence of America. We need a candidate to rise up and save this country.

Refuse to run each other down. Admit past errors and then go after Obama. We are tired of propping up your individual histories. The American people do not want Obama care so quit defending Romneycare - Wake up. Quit complaining about his money and accounts - I want someone who understands money in the White House. I am sick of the bickering between two men - what are you 8? I want to see someone that is presidential. Neither look that way right now. I am a Conservative. I will vote for AOB Anyone But Obama.. but I am asking them to be civil, presidential and concentrate on the US not each other and not themselves! The next debate should NOT have one word about the other - concentrate on America or get off the platform. Neither of you are more important than the country.

Address the issues he (or she) consider important and the specific method that should be used to solve the problems. Such as the children of illegal immigrants. Deport all illegals, or excuse all illegals? There must be gentler and kinder but just way which does not violate the poison fruit doctrine. Perhaps requirements for those who crossed our borders illegally, requirements which are not easy but not impossible to fulfill. That plus requirements for the children also. All should have a reasonable command of English and a knowledge of our country’s history and law.

Stay on target. Someone once said that Christians are the only group that shoot their own wounded. Looks like conservaties do it too. Watching what is going on, I am starting to think BHO will be re-elected. I believe we have a dysfunctional govt. and nation because we are not following the original plan of the Founders. i.e. The plans call for round wheels on the bike, but we have decided to put square ones on. Just isn't going to work and results in a very bumpy ride.

Our country is now in the worst condition since the great depression and is on the brink of becomming an evil, top down socilist tyrany. The fools in the RNC seek to annoint a leftist liberal for their canidate in direct opposition of the base of the party. More top down tyrany. Unless We The People rise up and vote in the primaries, we will be left with a country that none of us recognize.

Mitt Romney has taken the mud-slinging to a new height. Newt Gingrich responded in Kind. Rick Santorum is holding steady and I prefer his ways to all the others. I don't believe Ron Paul has a chance to beat Obama. The main objective of the opposition should be to tell us, the voters, what they will do for the Country and how they will do it. I am pretty tired of the mud-slinging. Both Newt and Rick will do well against Obama, as long as we can support the candidate that is nominated. If we are a splintered party, among the conservatives (of which I am one), Independents, Libertarians and Republicans, we are doomed as a Nation. We must support the nominee. Four more years of this current administration will take the USA even further towards the abyss of socialism, where everyone is equal and the government is supreme. Obama’s administration already defies the constitution in executing the laws of the land. We want to bring back the US Constitution’s. The law of the land has served us for more than 200 years - we need to bring it back! Only then, we can return to a Great Nation and where everyone has respect for law and order. We want everyone to have a fair chance of success, and not to bring the highest common denominator to the lowest. We won't have the good things that the US has provided with Obama and Company. Again, I feel Newt and Rick can both do get it done. I am very leery about Mitt.

I see the debate process as destructive. I do not want to elect the best "debater." I want to elect a President who possesses intelligence, integrity and an understanding of the powers and limitations of the office. Each candidate should have a forum in which to answer the same set of questions such as "Why are you running?" "What issue is most important and how will you implement your solution?" "What are your strengths?" "What are your weaknesses?"

Stop talking about each other and tell us your ideas and solutions for the many problems our country has to overcome. Go to a higher place. Stop making it a party against party race. Let's heal our country by turning to our Christian heritage and our constitution. Let's allow the Lord to bless us by getting it right before it's too late. We have to come together despite the politicians battle to separate and destroy the country. Can we set aside a day each week that we all pray for our country at the same time? Pray without ceasing. God Bless America.

I'm probably repeating myself but I think Adolph Hitler said it best. Not quite the quote but it's as close as I can remember it.

When I see who is in the White House and how the Congress is more interested in keeping their jobs, selling out to big business, I have to think that WE THE PEOPLE stopped thinking a long time ago.

Illegal Immigrants are ILLEGAL! What part of Illegal doesn’t the current administration understand - even some of the Republicans running for the nomination. The USA needs to pass an amendment to the US Constitution to rescind Amendment XIV. The amendment was passed to ensure the Black Americans were not denied citizenship. It was not meant to allow illegal immigrants to have children and the latter become US Citizens by birth. Just as in the children of ambassadorial families, they are not US citizens and retain the citizenship of their homeland. Only those children that are born of legal parents should have the US Citizenship granted. ALL illegal immigrants should be given a moratorium to repatriate on their own volition. If caught in the USA after the expiration of the moratorium, they should be imprisoned and work for the USA with no recompense to themselves and their families. I believe Sheriff Joe Arpaio has the right idea.
Also we need voter’s ID cards to keep anyone who does not have voting privileges to vote. We have ID’s for everything else. The voters need to show proof that they are US Citizens and are authorized to vote. Then we can have corruption-free elections.

First of all, Judy, you apparently have never read any of the Patriot Posts.
Now on to the candidates. I, for one, appreciate the debates no matter how strongly each candidate struts their stuff. I do miss Michelle, though, because she kept it on track. Rick is now doing that service.
There are 4 types of people out there who will react differently to conflict. I for one do not sweep issues under the rug. I am more a dominant. Then there are the cooperatives and the collaborators. In a debate it is the dominant one who wins.
I want my leader to win. As many have written, it is a dangerouse world out there.

I can only shake my head in disbelief as I hear Republican "talking heads" try to convince us that the current Republican primary shooting match is "good for the process". It does not take a deep thinker to realize that while it is important that we have a thoroughly vetted candidate (we're way beyond that point now), every day the candidates spend on character assassination of their fellow Republicans is one less day we have to focus on articulating the clear contrast between Obama's "vision" for the country and ours. Pick a nominee that has the best chance to defeat Obama and let's go to work NOW on the real enemy of freedom!

They need to finally tell me what they will do to get our country moving again. I want to hear about how we are going to rid ourselves of this gross misrepresentation of American values, traditions and assault on our freedoms and security.. In other words we are seeking solid leadership based on merit, character and intelligence, we are tired of the politicks as usual and we know what we want.

"How could each candidate get more serious?" Stop the personal "dirt" slinging! Discussion should deal with the issues, the matters that are of concern to the Republic. Not personal foibles or errors in the past.
Each candidate is, supposedly, investigated as to qualification; age, citizenship, et al, according to the laws and the Constitution. We need to hear a plan for furthering the Republic, and the populace. Personal diatribe should be omitted, as any personal comments in re family history, or members of the family. Facts, Ma'am, just the facts!

It may be too late already as I believe that the Republican candidates have cut the field down to the point that Obama will have no trouble getting re-elected (and destroying the remains of this once great nation). The bickering & in-fighting between the candidates have only served to identify the 'faults' of each other thus laying the path for definite failure. Instead of this nit picking, they should have been more active in playing up their own strengths & what they plan to do to return this country to an even keel. Unfortunately, I fear that it is already too late. The Republican candidates have supplied Obama with all the ammunition that he needs to easily plow them (& this nation) under at the next election. Sound taps, turn off the lights and close the doors - the United States Of America is about to end.

You inquired, following Dr. Sowell's excellent offering, "How could each candidate get more serious?"
Although it's a valid question, doesn't seem to be related to Dr. Sowell's saying "It's time to get serious," which presumably referred to political pundits and we the people in general getting serious. The candidates surely wouldn't be putting themselves and their families through the proverbial wringer, were they not serious.
Given the state of the nation today, when even those who claim to be on your side of the aisle attack you, why would any honest person of integrity and convictions wish to run for any elected govenment office? Why risk one's reputation, one's fortune, one's life, and those of one's family, to such an ungrateful, often envious, usually forgetful, population? Most of the greatest people in world history, such as Churchill and Thatcher, e.g., were cast aside just as soon as they'd worked their nation out of danger.
What qualifies political pundits to pronounce judgements such as "mediocre," and "flawed," on any candidates who are willing and able to run for public office? What have the majority of them done for their country by way of taking any serious risks of anything of value, including their lives in military service? How many, so quick to say "Shame on him" have achieved their educations, whatever they are, via government assistance of one sort or another? How many have never been tempted or sucumbed to cheating on their spouses? How many have never lied, cheated, or stolen some trivial thing, never taken advantage of anyone, or gossiped, or ate or drank too much? How many, whatever their incomes, are deeply in debt?
Such questions and their answers for each and every one of us, is what I'd call "overdue in getting serious." We want civility? Why are we uncivil? If we don't want hypocrits running our government, it behooves us, in whatever our endeavors, not to be hypocrits ourselves, seems to me. Truth is, much of our nation right now is much like the picture of "Dorian Gray!" We can but pray Heaven has mercy on us and does not give us what we deserve.
I agree completely with Dr. Sowell. I'm tired of reading the opinions of imperfect people demanding perfection from others. The only perfect person I've ever heard of was crucified on a cross, lest we forget. If we need to know more about candidates' plans and principles, which we should, we should be demanding from Media that the appropriate, rather than ridiculous, questions are asked of each candiate.
Furthermore, we should have been demanding long ago that Media ask Obama exactly the same questions asked of conservatives, and that they call him on it, when he replies with empty rhetoric or evades the question! Yet, if the left owns Media, and most of the Press, it's unlikely that will happen.

@Judy:
No intelligent patriot will take your challenge. We do not debate MORONS. A debate with you would only take the issues to the highest level of your perception...NONSENSE.
@Patriots: Since it appears that the cowards heretofore elected to Congress will remain inert to the issue of Obama ineligibility for the remainder of his term, I am reserving my vote for the candidate who will pledge to arrest Obama, Holder, and the Communist Czars on Inauguration Day and give them a speedy trial for treason against the Republic.
Anything less is unacceptable.

How can each candidate get serious?
I don't think they can. Most of these candidates, and ones in previous election cycles, as Thomas Sowell said, have already been poisoned. They're not only poisoned as evidenced by their attacks on each other in the circular firing squad, but they're poisoned by the temptation of wealth, garnered through holding public office.
If holding office wasn't so damn lucrative, we wouldn't have such fervor in trying to achieve it. And if all Americans were equally responsible to pay taxes, we wouldn't have our brother and sister leeches voting for pandering politicians, who are expected to create and expand entitlement programs. And then, we wouldn't have such government dependency that produces more leeches and more pandering politicians.
Holding office is a public service, and one in which you should never become rich. The passage of time has not been good for America. Our political evolution has taken us from integrity to the gutter. How many politicians become rich while in office? It's staggering, and shameful. Compare that to the fact that the Founders all suffered financially, among other ways, while they were "serving" the country. Their service was with the singular purpose to create the best government possible; not to fatten their wallets.

When will the GOP "Washington elites" come to their senses and stop condeming Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Michele Bachman, etc. (conservatives)? And, when will they stop pushing left-of-center loser candidates (Mitt Romney and John McCain) who have no chance in hell of defeating Obama because those two are nothing but "more of the same" weak candidates and DO NOT represent sincere conservatives and Christians.

Not often, but now and then Noonan comes on as fairly accurate. Seems that way this time. The Republican Party is, in my view, self-destructing as it is now being presented. What is a Republican? Should be all the description required. This is a Republic, not a Democracy. Republican? Be one or be something else! If one is not totally for the preservation of the Republic, he should label himself another identity. Democrats, as a rule, do stick together and pursue one goal. Which usually defeats a splintering Republican Party, and Republican candidates. There should be no such animal as a "moderate republican." Those we are now offered as Republican candidates are destroying each other. Nobody wins! The survivor is damaged to the extent he will likely not win the ultimate battle.

I think all the Republican candidates should take a page from Newt Gingrich's play book and start by dismissing the moderator's question as frivolous, divisive, and unworthy of a Presidential Debate (they ALL are, without exception). Then they should proceed to discuss the manifold failures of the current administration, and contrast that to the course that they would propose instead.

A couple thoughts:
For the most part, debates are nothing more than a 3rd party trying to get two other parties to fight. Why? Because it takes the focus off of the real issues and Obama! Even when Santorum called CNN on this at the last debate, the "moderators or 3rd party" continued the "He called your mother a (blank). What do you have to say about that?" Nil on the economy, jobs, bailouts, scandals, etc.
The media is purposely drilling conservatives that step on a stage and soft-balling liberals in an attempt to drain the pool of potential nominees. This is why we are stuck with this final four. No one in their right mind would want to go through this vetting process. I'm sure numerous books could be written to compare/contrast the media coverage of 2008 and 2012 elections.

Ken Blackwell's observation about Obama's hostility to family is correct, yet it contains superfluous words: You could strike "faith" and "God-given" without changing the meaning a whit. That means it has nothing to do with faith.
The issues are life and family, not religion.

Each candidate could get serious and begin to ignore each other while rolling out what they would do to help the country get back on the right track.
Each candidate should also be taking Obama to task and pinpointing just what that particular item was and why it was harmful to U.S.citizens.
Our candidates have fallen into a trap when they run each other down. They should each point out their strengths, admit it like a man the areas they failed at and what they would do to change that area back to success. They should keep the American people in their vision at all times.
In short, start talking about all the horrible things Obama has done, talk about the good things you have done, answer honestly about things you messed up and what you would do differently, and show yourself to be the candidate that all people would want at the helm of the Presidency no matter what your party affiliation is.

The constant character assassination of fellow Republicans by those vying for nomination for the presidency are self-defeating. They need to concentrate on the real enemy... Obama. I suggest that they tout their own successes and their plans to help the country get back on its feet while pointing out all the errors and constitutional violations of the Obama administration and his congressional cronies. They might also point out that Obama was never properly vetted in the first place, as any other candidate would have been.

"I will sit down and debate anyone---" You are on, Judy! Name the place, I suggest this forum, which I am certain will agree. You state you are "middle class". What is your description of that group of Americans? Republican or Democrat? I am military (retired), WWII, Korea, RVN, multiple tours each, and some other places on the planet where we had affairs. Senior enlisted, which means I was educated in the school of experience, not an elite scholastic environment. I am a Republican. Not as a political group, but as a believer in the concepts of the Founders of this Republic. Those who are not Republican believers are destroying this Union! Some are Democrats, some are RINO's. The blame game does not do it, lady! As one does, one is perceived to be. Mr.Obama is not a Republican, in that he demonstrates he does not believe in the concepts of a Republic. The New World Order (NWO), as an epithet, can be applied to many. Both Bushes, Clinton, Roosevelt (Franklin), and a couple of others in the interim of Washington's service to this Republic. I suggest a reality check, accomplished by a reading, and understanding, of history. This Republic was born in the hearts of men who wished to be free, not slaved by tyrants called kings. This Republic was baptized by fire. It does seem, now, that we have become full circle, and once again a would be king is gnawing at the roots of that Tree of Liberty. It should soon be watered, with the blood of tyrants, and Patriots! (again!)

I just wanted to remind myself that all this rattling about rules and regulations is for one reason. Left to a free choice industry leaders choose the money over peoples rights. That's why Unions and child labor laws were added. Man's free will is just not going to have the fare image without rules. This generation is all about it self and how it knows better than our forefathers. We had a strong America when we came together for the common good not self.
Watch the movie Obama's Plan and see the actual goings on that our government faces everyday trying to get big business to create a America that is good for Americans. There will never be recovery until the economics become so harsh big business goes out of business. Government must take control with regulations to stop another greed grab. Free market yes but controlled by legal responsibilities that don't exist today. Who ever gets elected will have the same problems because the same walls will be there, get it? Let waist our time talking about how to fix it, not who's is going to be the next Superman in Government.
Please stop talking about Social Security breaking the Nation. It is fine until 2037 unlike anything else. It is not a handout. People pay into it for retirement because everyone knows if the Gov does not help you save you will not. Of course we can go back to the idea of half the Nations old people starving which would really hurt the economy. Congress needs to payback the money it took from SS over the years and will take from again when this new tax break is pushed through. It is SS money taken out of the pot, the next generations retirement. Don't you young people care? Who's going to feed you when you are 65? Government spending is on things that don't help in the future, it only makes people rich today which is why the Manufacturing base is gone, they did not tool for the future until now. Greed again.
One more thing. The reason we don't have a pipe line is because we owe China too much money and now they are interfering in our politics. Besides it will be a joke to see a Chinese tanker get into that harbor. Did you know China offers to build half of the factory if you go there with yours? Now why are we loosing jobs?

If the people don't understand the problems, they will never understand what must be done to restore our country. We need border security. Who Pays Income Taxes
I guess one of my pet peeves is trying to have a conversation with some one who state a "fact" they have no way of knowing it is a fact! They are merely repeating something they have heard. The following is an example of how I try to find out for myself.
The following information is from the Director of the Statistics of Income Division as it was provided to the Office of Tax Analysis of the Treasury Department.
A taxable income of $269,496 and up would place you in the top 1% income earner and your group paid 34.75% of Federal Personal Income Tax.
From $114,729 to $269,495 is the top 5% and your group plus the top 1% paid 53.84% of Federal Personal Income Tax.
From $83,220 to $114,728 is the top 10% and your group plus the top 1% and 5% paid 65.04% of Federal Personal Income Tax.
From $50,607 to $83,219 is the top 25% and your group plus the top 1%, 5%, and 10% paid 82.69% of Federal Personal Income Tax.
From $25,491 to $50,606 is the top 50% and your group plus the top 1%, 5%, 10%, and 25% paid 95.79 of Federal Personal Income Tax.
An income of less than $25,490 is the bottom 50% and your group paid 4.21% of Federal Personal Income Tax.
Upon receipt of this report the Joint Economic Committee of the Congress of the United States issued the following statement:
"The date publicly released by the Statistics of Income Division reflect the steeply progressive impact of the federal income tax. These date must be considered before any valid distributional evaluation of various income tax proposals can be made. Unfortunately, statistics portraying tax policy changes as skewed often are released without disclosing the share of taxes actually paid by various income groups. In other words, data on the share of taxes paid before and after a tax change would take effect are often concealed, producing misleading results. The bottom line is that these data are needed for an informed discussions of a wide array of tax issues."
The following was taken from tables provided by the Internal Revenue Service, and they represent the Federal Income Tax Schedule for a Married Couple filing jointly. The 1st represents the 2000 tax year (before Bush tax cut) and the 2nd represents the 2003 tax year (after Bush tax cut).
2000
15% rate applied to income up to 43,850
28% rate applied to income from 43,851 up to 105,950
31% rate applied to income from 105,951 up to 161,450
36% rate applied to income from 161,451 up to 288,350
39.6% rate applied to income from 288,351 and up
2003
10% rate applied to income up to 14,000
15% rate applied to income from 14,001 up to 56,800
25% rate applied to income from 56,801 up to 114,650
28% rate applied to income from 114,651 up to 174,700
33% rate applied to income from 174,701 up to 311,950
35% rate applied to income from 311,951 and up
I would suggest you do your own math - you might even consider getting your own schedules. I used the following assumptions: Married couple file joint return to produce a tax liability before any deductions. I did not assume any children, etc. I wanted a fair way to make comparisons between tax liability before and after the Bush tax cut.
In 2000 a couple with an income of $14,000 would have a income tax liability of $2,100.00
In 2003 that same couple would have a income tax liability of $0.00. That is a 100% reduction and a savings of $2,100.00.
In 2000 a couple with an income of $56,800.00 would have a income tax liability of $10,203.22.
In 2003 that same couple would have a income tax liability of $6,420.00. That is a reduction of 37% and a savings of $3,783.22.
In 2000 a couple with an income of $100,000.00 would have a income tax liability of $22,299.50.
In 2003 that same couple would have a income tax liability of $18,619.60. That is a reduction of 16.5% and a savings of $3.679.90.
In 2000 a couple with an income of $300,000.00 would have a income tax liability of $91,466.59.
In 2003 that same couple would have a income tax liability of $80,447.57. That is a reduction of 12% and a savings of $11,019.00.
Please note that the lower your income the higher is the percentage of income tax reduction due to the Bush tax cut. What these figures prove is that the "rich" now pay an even higher percent of the total federal income tax paid than they did before the Bush tax cuts.
Remember magician's! They try to get you to focus on something other than what they are really doing - they don't want you to catch them in the act of tricking you!!
It is true that a couple with a $300,000 taxable income is potentially going to receive a larger dollar amount returned to them as a result of the Bush tax cut than a couple that reported a taxable income of $40,000.00. Do you believe that is an honest way to honestly judge the fairness of a tax reduction program??
The Federal Income Tax is money taken from an income earner by the Federal government to use for the benefit of the citizens of the United States.
I will end with this question. Under current law a couple makes $14,000.00 pays no federal income tax. A couple that makes $300,000.00 pays $80,447.57 in federal income tax. Now here is the questions: Does it take more military to defend a couple that makes $300,000.00 than it does to defend a couple that make $14,000.00 or is the couple that makes $300,000.00 paying to defend the couple that makes $14,000.00?? God bless those high income earners!!
I look forward to your comments. Sincerely, Tom Pinkley

First, the Republican party has to provide a political platform with an agenda that Americans can support. Next, they need to nominate a leader that people want to follow.
Constant criticism of everything, including each other, Republican Congress saying no to everthing, even their own proposals, is not a platform of ideas and actions.
If the only agenda the Republicans have is to beat Obama, the Rebublicans only show how hollow their party really is.

Candidates should stop attacking one another and get cracking with a serious conservative platform that deconstructs big government and destroys what Obama hath wrought. Point out how Obama is acting outside of the limits of the Constitution in every instance since he has been elected and how those actions affect all of us. Get back to the basics of the U.S. Constitution and educate the public about what that means. Too many people do not understand this nation's heritage, are ignorant of the history and workings of government and need to believe that they can make a difference. I know too many people who are not registered to vote just so they can avoid being called for jury duty. How's that for giving up your freedoms? RE: Hamilton.
I know this is a little off today's topic. I am replying to a question directed at me Friday last.
I can always count on several of you to make me think.
How can I fix it? I honestly don't know. To let the system do it as M. Romney said, is only partially correct. It will still produce a wealth flow from bottom to top. the lower class will become street urchins and the middles class will become slaves to the upper class. Our own history has shown us this. A friend of mine sent me a link. http://www.propublica.org/article/freddy-mac-mortgage-eisinger-arnold If this is the case, what happened under Bush/Obama, they aren't the problem, over or under regulation isn't;t the problem though I hate over regulation. the problem is a symptom of a disease and the disease is greed.
A few miles away an 18 year old drop out is on trial as a Robo signer for foreclosure forms that does not exist, the banks can't find the mortgage papers, can't prove they ever loaned money on the property. when asked, "Do you know what you're signing?" He said, "No." Greed, corporate greed is the problem. We lost our way. Until we fix the problem and fix illagle practices which Well Fargo admitted to along with B&A, and others, we get what we deserve, a sick economy.
I've talked to the 99% locally. Nationwide, they are dysfunctional but one thing holds them together, corporate greed and why hasn't anyone been indicted for this?
My friend, we can start to fix this when we hold those accountable. My on congressperson told me and Mike T, He receives as many as 3x per day lobbyists for those in the finance field. The editor made a brilliant piece about usury. Well he gets lobbyist from them to.
To fix it, hold them accountable. In order to do that, we as a nation must first beg forgiveness from God for allowing it to happen in the first place. Without you knowing it you made me view what I considered a black and white problem in a different light. It's not a conservative/liberal problem, it's a spiritual problem.
I'm afraid we will have to pay for our sins David paid for the death of his new born son. He took responsibility and soldiered on. God forgave him but he still paid the price. Morning Glory, if you read me, comment if you will. I will not shoot back for I think Hamilton put his finger on the problem.
Greed drives our government. We are so worried about the candidates taking each other out, writing campaign adds for Obama, a title, we forget, a title means little if we don't back it up with spirituality. When we say, "If you are a member of any other party, "you can't be a christian." that's cleaves right down the middle of our nation souls and it is good talking points but no one is looking at the white elephant in the room for we are worried about titles and piddly things. As long as we do that do you think any light is going to shine down from above? to fix a problem we must acknowledged why there is a problem, fix that.
If I had my say, quit killing work programs, food stamps, tax breaks for the middle income, make the playing field equal for we are all equal in the sight of God, work together as a team and seek his face. Maybe we might need to go back to the early church. The ministers out there know this term is correct, I;ve taught it enough in early church history. "Early Church Communism" You can see it in action in the Book of Acts. everyone put in the pot and each got "according to his need." I'm not advocating it here but at least they tried to do the right thing for everyone is equal in the sight of God.
I'm afraid at times the answer might be, "YOU didn't keep my precepts so pay for it. I forgive you but the price must be paid. It's a lesson you see time and time again in the O.T.

It only takes COURAGE to get serious.
Courage about clean politics: Return to Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment of not speaking ill of another Republican. That is to say - courage to not be self serving; and only tell voters why they should be elected President rather than why another Republican should not.
2. Courage about Obama: Tell American voters ALL the reasons why Obama should not be re-elected. That can fill up an evening.
3. Courage about answering questions: Tell the truth and refuse to answer the numerous stupid questions they get from journalists. Never answer a question that starts out "Some people say.......what do you say?" And when they do answer a question, do so without pontificating on a fence.

Q.) How could each candidate be more serious?
A.) Ensure that they are never seen anywhere near a Bilderberg Group meeting and eschew anything New World Order. In other words, vow to return this country to its Constitutional roots and reverse the damage done to our freedoms. Ron Paul is our only hope for that and if he is not the Republitard nominee, I will vote for him as an Independent fully realizing that my choice of Demoncrat or Republitard is the difference between fast forward and slow burn.

It would be a breath of fresh air if at the debates, they looked each other in the eye and said, "I think I'm better for the job than you are, but if the American people see otherwise, I will be your strongest ally and you can count on me for my whole-hearted support". I just hope the destructive rhetoric has not caused irreparable damage to both of them so that this scenario could be meaningful and not viewed as a big show.

Planned Parenthood as an encouragement to reduce the randomness of pregnancy may be a good idea, but it was not invented by Margaret Sanger. As it is now implemented it is the camel's nose, Eugenics Light, with a tremendous weight of human life spent in abortion. Such cheapening of life will lead to Soylent Green where redundant mature humans volunteer to be discarded or are selected by a Committee. I refuse to support Planned Parenthood with gifts; I would prefer not to support them with taxes.

1) Focus like a laser beam on the tremendous harm Barack Obama is doing to the nation, now and for the future.
2) Don't be afraid to say that paying the lawful tax rate for income based on it's source is not a crime.
Too bad Santorum can't get a better showing.

We have long been Patriots of our dear Constitution and Bill of Rights but this in-fighting between our GOP candidates is nothing short of pathetic and sad. The more money you have the bigger the ammo against the other candidate/s. We, as well as the community in which we live, are sick at heart and TIRED of it already. We want to hear what these contenders are going to do about the dire situation we are in with this current administration. We could care less what who did in the past and how they did it. Let's 'move on' and get to the beef of the reason each candidate is running for our highest office. There are a couple of GOOD candidates in this GOP race; let's see what you are made of 'today' and share with us how you are going to help us get back on the track to 'The shining city in the sky'!

Stick to the issues that they believe will help our country and continue to point out the many weaknesses in Obama's administration. Place emphasis on the poor showings of the present administrations and what can be done to improve them. The people are not as stupid as most politicians think they are. Let the other Republican contenders alone.

Judy, you must not have children or any in your family, if you cannot see what the future will be for them if this regime is allowed to go on. Do you want domination of muslims?? That is what is happening in many coutries and even in some of our major cities. Do you want all the social services that we have ruined by illegal immigrants that have anchor babies, then over-run the free clinics and live off welfare that we the tax-payers support. Already, there are almost half of the population in the U.S. that do not work, but live off tax money that we pay. I am 72 years old and am still working because my retirement funds have gone down so much, that I fear to quit. My healt is excellent now, but in the future, will there be funds enough to take care of us. Oh yes, the trend that is becoming prevalent will be death panels to decide if we will be given the care that we need or to decide if we need to die to not be a burden on society. I ask, what about the millions of people that have been on welfare so long that they do not even try to work, or have so many babies, that they could not work. Their children in turn do the same thing and a cycle is started. I do not mind my tax money going to help disabled retired people that have worked their adult lives, or people that have been handicapped through no fault of their own.
That is another thing entirely.
I am afraid it is going to be people like yourself that does not try to understand where government is using our money that will be responsible for re-electing this man that is ruining our country.
God help us all if this does happen. I pray for my grandchildren.

Does anyone remember the vitriol that passed between the supporters of Messers Jefferson and Adams -- a vitriol so severe that it was decades later before they reconciled?

It has been pointed out that John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, hurled even worse negative campaign slurs against each other and justify the mudslinging between Mitt and Newt as "that's politics". Main difference, back then there was no internet, no twitter, facebook blogs, etc, and pony express took weeks, if not months, to reach the citizens. Too bad. Obama can wait until the party contenders have totally turned off the populace, and win re-election even on his failed policies.

These potential candidates need to stop attacking each other. If they attack anyone it should be Obama or the losers from the democratic side of congress. It is time they clearly outline how they will govern if elected, where they stand on major issues and specifically what tax reforms they will support as well as reforms needed in congress and whether or not they support reining in these bureaucrats, putting the responsibility back upon congress to enact any legislation that has the power of law.

As Peggy Noonan said in the very next Patriot Post post....RR was a WINNER because he said, "We believe in this and this, not that"...not going into negatives. I recall his response to negative attacks was usually things like, "Well, there you go again" with an ironic smile on his face. The happy warrior. Let's see some of THAT, Mr. Romney and Mr. Gingrich! You're both qualified out the wazoo...prove it - quit denigrating each other!!! We conservatives are sick of it.

How could the candidates get serious? If they want whats best for America then Romney and Gingrich should drop out and endorse Ron Paul. As for their personal attacks I believe it to be the single most important tool used to opponents, why would any decent person subject themselves and their families to this circus?
For the greedy, power hungry politician they will do anything to win.The democrats long ago made a science of personal attacks pubs are getting better at it.If you have nothing good to say then say nothing won't win an election.

Dear Burt,
Perhaps one reason the Democrats want the rats treated so humanely is that they personally identify with them--you know, disgusting, low-down, sleazy, filthy, disease-carrying, reproducing-young-in-masses-vermin. Yep, I'd say that pretty much sums it up~~

A moral man is an honorable man....If they lie in their personal lives they will certainly be liars in their public lives. If you're a womanizer, it means you have issues with power and women. Sorry but I want my politicians to be above such things. Whether they're running for presidency or any public office. Yes, I think they should be better in every way from the rest of us. Besides I know lots of intelligent, moral, wise men and women. There's no reason why we can't get the same kind of public servants. It was appropriate for those women to come forward in regards to Herman Cain just like they did with Clinton. These people are poor quality because our candidates are paid for by special interest. We don't have people who are willing to be great public servants for a few years.
We have no great men and women anymore...

The candidates can serious by stopping the personal attacks, stopping the lies, stop pushing twisted facts, KEEP TO THE ISSUES, - THESE CANDIDATES HAVE GOT TO STOP THEIR NONSENSICAL PERSONAL ATTACKS BEFORE THE WHOLE MESS BLOWS UP RESULTING IN A 2ND DISASTROUS TERM FOR THE MOST HORRIFIC PRESIDENT THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO ELECT. For the sake of the USA and its citizens, please stop the mud slinging and stick to the serious issues now facing our country. We are on the edge of the abyss; the GOP candidates had better either straighten up and act decently and elect a conservative or continue on this self-destructive path and our country ends up being pushed over the edge into the abyss from which we will NEVER arise. This is THE most important election in the history of the United States of America. For the sake of our country; stop destroying one another and get to the real work of electing someone who will put this country back on the right track and lead this country back to its once great stature.

These other guys are on to wars with Iran, cuba and now south america...they're just plain crazy..they've not learned a thing about our meddling in other countries business. Do we always have to have an enemy to build our military industrial complex at the risk of breaking our country?

Colonize the moon? Has Newt Ginrich lost his mind?
Perhaps if we had a balanced budget and a surplus, it could be done. Now is definitely not the time for such dreams. Everyone should concentrate on defeating Obama, and repairing the damage he has done to this country and economy. And then get to repealing all of the unconstitutional legislation of the past 100 years.

The best thing Flip Romney could do is drop out of the race before any further damage is done. It seems that Flip Romney is unaware of what many of the Conservatives know. Flip Romney will fail if he is the nominee at least as big as McCain or maybe even more so. Even George Soros has reportedly said there is not much diffenece between Obama and Romney. As a Conservative I refuse to hold my nose and vote for Romney. I am also well aware that others hold the same opinion and if enough of us withhold voting for Romney then he will not win the Presidency

I think we can all understand vitriol in the heat of argument, for as long as it lasts - but how long it lasts is the trick.
In America we're always debating between the Conservative and the Liberal ideologies of how best to run our government. With our current state of affairs (our economy in the dumper and people becoming genuinely afraid over impending government regulations and the loss of freedom they represent), I think we have, right now, a rare opportunity to see Liberalism in full flower. And with that opportunity, we, as American voters, easily ought to be able to conclude that the Liberal path is the wrong path.
If we conclude that, then the only reason for vitriol to continue, is for the losing side, having been proven wrong, to be unable to swallow their pride and to yield, and put down their daggers. Despite our whole history as a Constitutional Republic, conspicuously conflicting with Liberalism periodically all along the way, the Left refuses to yield. They are responsible for tremendous, protracted suffering, spanning generations upon generations. It's all in the fragile ego and the arrogance that denies it.

I agree with several commenters that the candidates need to stop degrading each other with personal attacks. Its sickening, and oh, so tiresome. America is at the brink of being sent over the edge of no return by an extremely liberal, narcissitic president, and we need real leadership shown by our candidates now, not attacks on each other. Children--children---children----stop it!! Thats what I'm reminded of-----two children telling tales on each other with one trying to out-yell the other, all to no result except exasperation and anger by grass roots Americans. With that said, however, if I had to vote today, Newt Gingrich would get my vote because he is the only one who is giving a plan for restoring America, while Mitt Romney continues to read off his talking points. Boring! But, again, to Newt and to Mitt---stop the stupid bickering and get on to the real issues and concerns of the American people.

As far as presidential (or any other) campaigns:
1. Tell us what you think are the top issues.
2. Tell us why and how you think the government should, or should NOT, be involved and your detailed plans to resolve those issues.
3. Go to the next campaign stop, repeat.

I've read both Hamilton and Rifleman comments both above and below my comments. Spot on.
I would like to add one thing worthy of note. Money runs the political machine, this is true.
Pride and power also runs the political machine. As a nation we have an over abundance of pride and pride always leads to everything that's unsavory.

What everyone seems to have forgotten is that Gingrich consistently refused to criticize his fellow Republicans until Romney spent millions in Iowa attacking Newt and costing him many votes in the process. Now everyone appears to be decrying the ugliness of the discourse without remembering which candidate started it all. The amnesia of the voters never ceases to amaze me. Apparently we like a good flogging as much as we like complaining about it. Sheesh!

Think of this as a job interview and not a popularity contest. Leave the fluff to the democrats, we want substance. Be smart and don't let the press make a sucker out of you, and remember they are not on your side! This election is absolutely crucial for us to win, losing is not an option. If Obama wins another term he will think he has a mandate. In many ways we are like Lobsters in a kettle, we won't know we're cooked until we are no more!

Since the candidate that raises the most money usually wins elections, that must mean that elections are usually bought even though we supposedly have a representative government.

Newt and Mit are the lesser of two evils but still a very slim improvement over Obama. I cannot begin to understand why more people aren't on the side of Ron Paul. A true conservative in and out. A true defender of liberty. I am amazed that this site doesn't back him with vibrant enthusiasm. If it is Mit or Newt expect more government spending, a weak economy and more war. Smh.

How could each candidate get more serious? Tell us how you plan to right the wrongs committed under Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. Tell us how you plan to stop this immature and incessant internal warfare of American against American. Tell us how you plan to address a national debt that is 100+% of GDP and growing by a trillion plus each year. Tell us how you plan to cut the deficit in the fact of stagnant revenues. Tell us how you plan to get government out of the way of job creation and economic growth. Tell us how you plan to make federal revenue generation equitable for all, rather than relying on just over half of workers.

How could the candidates get more serious? To start with they could stop attacking each other and start selling themselves. They could tout their records and if their records stink that would give us a notion who we wouldn't vote for. They could lay out their plans for getting us back on our feet. And the number one thing they could do to get my vote is to start doing what most of them have sworn to do at one point or another and that is to protect and defend the Constitution of these United States of America. So far as I can tell, the only one standing pat on the Constitution is Ron Paul. Love him or hate him, He is true to the Constitution. We still may have a chance to pull out of this downward spiral, but cannot, will not ever do it if we abandon our Constituion - our law. It has served us well for over 200 years. Back to our roots! Back to the basics!

They need to treat each other with respect. Each of these candidates have a history of accomplishments. Dragging each other through the dirt benefits noone. Focus on the problems we face and how our conservative ideas can solve them. This is their opportunity to teach the potential voters how reduced spending, smaller efficient governing and encouraging the private sector rather than attacking it can save the nation. It's too important for cat fights.

In my mind, a true patriot-statesman-candidate would articulate what he has done an will do verses what his opponent has done or will do as it pertains to the enforecement of constitutional values and/or American values. That leaves no room for name-calling, classifying or otherwise labeling his/her opponent. Let the elector determine for himself or herself how best to label others. I would love to see a "debate" in which there is actually debate happening. I recall reading the Lincoln-Douglass debates, as well as the debates I participated in as a requisite of High school academics. It is impractical to place eight or ten competitors in a room, but now that we are down to four legitimate candidates, give them a two hour televised opportunity to discuss among themselves various issues of the day. The attendant moderator would simply enforce rules of courtesy and fairness. He would not be allowed to pose questions or regulate the direction of the debate. Those issues would be determined before the debate begins. As an aside, it would be nice to require literacy for anyone who votes.

I personally am sick of the attack ads. Tell me what you are going to do to beat the Obamanite! Uncover the dirt on HIM! There's plenty of it to go around. Republican candidates should be spending their time telling us what makes them qualified to run against the Chicago Machine and to unseat it's Puppet-In-Chief. Who knows, they might even educate some of the poor sheep who put that man in the White House in the first place. Tearing each other down in such vilifying terms only provides ammunition for the real enemy to use against us in the general election.
