Competing Tax Visions

Obama and Romney lay out tax plans

The tax proposals of Barack Obama and Mitt Romney serve as alternative visions for the nation. Obama's stifles growth through higher rates on the productive and pays lip service to "fairness" and "fiscal responsibility." Romney's enables growth and builds upon the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003. While Romney should have gone further, his plan is far preferable to Obama's.

The devil, as they say, is in the details. The Leftmedia trumpet Obama's plan to cut the corporate rate from 35 percent to 28 percent -- still above the world's average rate of 25. Yet his plan would merely move the U.S. from the second highest corporate rate in the world to the fourth highest -- with fewer deductions and new penalties to boot. For example, Obama would require for the first time that U.S. companies pay a minimum tax rate on any foreign earnings. His plan also distorts the playing field by favoring some industries over others he doesn't like. Overall, the administration says that American businesses would pay $250 billion more in taxes. It's important to note, however, that corporations don't pay corporate taxes; consumers and employees do through higher prices and lower wages.

By comparison, The Wall Street Journal reports, "All the Republican presidential candidates have called for lower corporate tax rates. Mitt Romney proposes reducing the top rate to 25%. Rick Santorum proposes a 17.5% general corporate tax rate and zero rate on manufacturers. Ron Paul proposes 15% and Newt Gingrich 12.5%."

The real economy crusher, however, could be Obama's proposal to raise the tax on dividends from 15 percent to a staggering 44.8 percent. This money is first taxed as profit at the corporate rate before it can be paid in dividends, making the effective tax rate on this money more than 64 percent. Also, by tripling the dividend rate, many corporations will simply stop paying dividends as they did in the 1990s when the rate was roughly twice that on capital gains. Republicans cut both rates to 15 percent in 2003, and by 2006 dividend income had more than tripled. Obama's plan wouldn't just hurt the "rich," as the White House would lead us to believe. More than 100 million people are shareholders in the market, and three-quarters of dividend payments go to retirees or near-retirees. These tax increases would make everyone poorer.

Romney's tax plan is quite different. It has five points: reduce marginal individual income tax rates across-the-board by 20 percent; reduce the corporate rate to 25 percent; maintain the 15 percent rate on capital gains, interest and dividends for those earning more than $200,000 per year, while eliminating it for everyone else; abolish the death tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax; make the changes permanent, thus bringing much-needed stability to the tax code.

There is good and bad to his proposal. The bad is that Romney is still somewhat bound to the classism of the Democrats. For example, why play by their rules with capital gains or five individual rates? It's good that lower rates apply to everyone, though. The current top individual rate of 35 percent, which is set to skyrocket in 2013 to 41 percent (including the Democrats' surtax on the wealthy), would fall to 28 percent, the 33 percent rate to 26.4 percent, the 28 percent rate to 22.4 percent, the 25 percent rate to 20 percent, the 15 percent rate to 12 percent, and the 10 percent rate to 8 percent. Marginal rate cuts are by far the most economically effective tax cuts, but we would like to see fewer and even lower rates. The corporate rate should go lower, too. Flat or Fair tax, anyone?

Permanently eliminating the estate, or "death," tax -- often at least the third time that money is taxed -- is a great idea, as is casting the Alternative Minimum Tax on the ash heap of history. Also, making these changes permanent could do as much good for the economy as the rates themselves. As an aside, the proposal is good for Romney's candidacy because it gives him something to campaign for instead of merely citing his biography or attacking his opponents.

For the electorate, the competing tax visions provide a clear choice. As Ronald Reagan once put it, "You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down." Obama, with his wealth redistribution and class envy, advocates the way down. Romney's proposal, while far from perfect, provides a way up to greater prosperity for all.

New & Notable Legislation

By comfortable margins, both chambers of Congress passed an extension of the payroll tax cut. The package extends the 2 percentage-point cut on Social Security taxes (reduced from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent) through the end of 2012 and continues to wave off previously agreed-upon cuts in doctors' Medicare compensation payments. It also tinkers with the federal unemployment insurance program to provide job-training opportunities and supplement some workers hit by drastic cuts in hours. The extension, which is not offset, will be a drain on the Social Security "trust fund" even though previous payroll tax cuts have provided no net gain for the economy. Republicans dropped their initial opposition to the extension because they didn't want to be accused of supporting a tax hike on workers. Barack Obama signed the bill with little fanfare, though he did take time to invite a few citizen-props to the White House -- those who went public with how the extra $40 in their paycheck has changed their lives.

Across the Pond: Britain to Partially Privatize Health Care

Little noticed by U.S. media beholden to Barack Obama and his takeover of our health care system is the recent decision by the British to begin partially privatizing their own government system. Prime Minister David Cameron introduced a bill to do just that because the British government is "hoping to avoid a Greek-style financial meltdown." The British media, unlike their American counterparts, aren't sitting on the sidelines. In fact, The Times of London quoted a Downing Street source saying that Health Secretary Andrew Lansley "should be taken out and shot" for supporting the effort. Whatever happened to advocating gun control over there?

The British system is legendary for its lengthy wait times and rationing of treatments, and it's still going broke. Leftists are up in arms (literally, if they take the aforementioned Downing Street advice) over supposed "cuts," too. Yet health care accounts for 18 percent of the UK's budget at $194 billion, and it will be about the same percentage at $200 billion in 2013. That's the same kind of "cut" Obama touts in his budget.

News From the Swamp: Reid Tempts Obama With Recess Appointments

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) encouraged Barack Obama to make some 90 recess appointments for nominees to various posts that have yet to be approved. Reid claims that the nominees could be approved at any point if Senate Republicans would "cooperate," meaning just shut up and do things his way. Several Republicans have refused flatly to support any nomination until the president rescinds his four non-recess appointments from December and puts them up for full advice and consent. Reid's response is simply more of the same cynical support for Obama's unconstitutional actions. Is it any wonder that he and his fellow do-nothing Senate Democrats haven't passed a budget in more than 1,000 days?

On the Campaign Trail: Santorum and Obama

Speaking on the campaign trail in Columbus, Ohio, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum argued that Barack Obama's actions aren't motivated by a concern for citizens' quality of life, but by his distorted worldview. "It's not about your job," Santorum said. "It's about some phony ideal, some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology. But no less a theology." The media and the White House immediately accused Santorum of saying that Obama was not Christian, which is ridiculous because Santorum has stated the opposite publicly more than once.

That's not to say there aren't legitimate questions about the president's religion. His past statements about people "clinging" to religion, his sitting for 20 years in the pews of Jeremiah Wright, who shouted obscenities from the pulpit, and Obama's current attacks on the Catholic Church prove that he has, at best, no real respect for religion. But Santorum can't utter that truth on the campaign trail because it would surely do him more harm than good.

The bottom line is that Obama is a textbook narcissist, and he worships himself. Sure, he touts his so-called Christian faith, but only when it suits him to argue for wealth redistribution, ObamaCare or various other leftist "social justice" adventures. The president's real theological underpinnings come from the Church of Obama -- his own word is gospel and he is above reproach for his views and actions -- and it has many devoted followers in the media who have rushed to his defense, as Santorum has discovered.

Another Vacation for Michelle and the Kids

While the rest of us spent the long Washington's Birthday weekend working or plotting survival in a moribund economy, most of the First Family enjoyed the sun and slopes of Aspen. Along with a couple of family friends and the usual host of Secret Service agents, Michelle Obama and their two girls spent the weekend at the home of Aspen Skiing owners Jim and Paula Crown. The Crowns are old Chicago friends of the Obamas and -- naturally -- huge Democrat donors. With instructors in tow, the Obamas hit the slopes.

There's no question that public perception of the First Family as members of the out-of-touch "1 percent" increases with each lavish vacation; this is the sixteenth such trip Michelle has taken in the last three years. While most families are happy to take a week's summer vacation and, if they're lucky, maybe a couple of weekend getaways a year, the Obama family averages a ritzy outing about once every 10 weeks. Nice lack of work if you can get it.

Hope 'n' Change: High Gas Prices 'Aren't Obama's Fault'

Remember back in 2005 when the media reported soaring gas prices as unequivocally "Bush's fault"? No such blame for the president this time. Barack Obama denies responsibility, too, saying through his mouthpiece Jay Carney, "If you're suggesting that there is responsibility for a rise in the price of oil, it's certainly not because of anything [Obama] hasn't done to expand oil production." In fact, the president slammed Republicans Thursday for "licking their chops" over high gas prices and greeting this "bad news so enthusiastically."

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who as Speaker of the House was one of the first to blame President Bush for high gas prices, blames everyone but this president. "Wall Street profiteering, not oil shortages, is the cause of the price spike," Pelosi said. "Unfortunately, Republicans have chosen to protect the interests of Wall Street speculators and oil companies instead of the interests of working Americans by obstructing the agencies with the responsibility of enforcing consumer protection laws."

The energy industry sees things a bit differently. "These have been the most difficult three years from a policy standpoint that I've ever seen in my career," said Bruce Vincent, president of Houston-based oil and natural gas producer Swift Energy. He says the Obama administration has "done nothing but restrict access and delay permitting" and "has threatened this industry at every turn." Meanwhile, DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz complains that Republicans and their oil buddies don't have a solution, because "all they would do is more and more drilling." Um, yeah. Increasing supply usually does lower the cost, but we wouldn't expect a Democrat to understand that.

Income Redistribution: Long-Term Unemployment Is Driving People Nuts

In the last half-decade since our economic picture dimmed considerably, the number of people who receive Social Security disability checks has increased to more than 10 million, including about two million spouses and children of disabled workers. All told, the Social Security disability program costs taxpayers more than $200 billion per year. The percentage of workers on disability has surged upward at a rate of nearly 20 percent, to the point that an unbelievable one out of every 19 Americans between the ages of 25 and 64 collects federal disability.

Perhaps recipients are more creative with their reasoning for collecting disability, as 43 percent of applicants are claiming mental illness -- up from 33 percent prior to the recession. Obviously, it's harder to determine if someone is faking illness if their scars are mental rather than physical. Since the beginning of the recession, around 1.9 million additional people have swelled the disability rolls, a significant part of the workforce decline in that same period.

This scheme also affects election-year politics because those who collect disability aren't considered part of the workforce, so those who go from collecting unemployment checks to taking disability payments help bring down the headline unemployment rate. According to a recent Gallup survey, though, unemployment is about to surge back to 9 percent. Gallup's previous mid-January figure mirrored the announced 8.3 percent rate the Obama administration and media trumpeted earlier this month. Again, that's not factoring in the newly disabled. This gravy train can't chug along forever -- the latest projections are that Social Security disability will run out of cash around 2018.

This Is Your Brain on Bailouts

Eurozone finance ministers authorized another bailout of Greece this week -- this one to the tune of roughly $170 billion -- to rescue the Mediterranean nation temporarily from default. This is the second major effort in this regard, and, unfortunately, it's unlikely to be the last.

The so-called "austerity" measures imposed by moneyed lenders in the European Union (EU) are virtually impossible for Greece to enact, short of suspending its constitution and imposing un-democratic "reform" measures. Most notable is the significant loss of sovereignty associated with increased EU financial oversight and direction. Additionally, any economic growth Greece achieves would be redirected solely toward debt pay-down, and the measures would also virtually require even more cuts in wages and jobs. Even these proposed reforms would only reduce Greece's debt to 120 percent or so of its GDP by 2020 -- in other words, the EU is throwing a gasoline-soaked sponge at a bonfire in hopes of putting it out.

Why give Greece a bailout in the first place? The answer is that the EU's 17-nation currency bloc sees the Grecian crack in the entire EU dike and hopes to plug it with a finger. Sadly, the EU is wrong. Like most savvy economists, we believe this deal merely prolongs the inevitable and will lead to an even deeper default eventually -- likely within months. If that happens and Greece is not decoupled from the Euro before defaulting, Greece will indeed be the tip of the iceberg.

The foundation of this problem is a Pollyannaish belief in getting something for nothing; that government-funded pensions are a birthright; that government spending has no bounds; that people are not ultimately responsible for their actions, either individually or collectively; and that wishing a problem would go away will actually make it go away. That's a lesson for America's governing elite, and we hope they get the memo before the bonfire hits U.S. shores.

Regulatory Commissars: UN Internet Regulation Proposed

Apparently bored with its stunning inability to maintain peace, enforce resolutions or prevent genocides, the United Nations is poised to embark upon another mission: global Internet takeover. Russia and China, among other nations, are pushing for a UN treaty that would institute international control over the Internet. Under the treaty, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency, would have jurisdiction over Web addresses and other Internet procedures; Internet security and privacy would be centrally controlled; international roaming rates would be globally regulated; users could be subject to fees for international Internet traffic, and more. If such a tyrannical grab at global power doesn't raise red flags (pun intended), it should.

Forget the fact that deregulation spawned the dynamic growth in Internet use, from 16 million to two billion users worldwide between 1995 and 2011. Forget that the Internet has helped create 2.6 new jobs for every one job lost because of Internet development. Forget that technology free of centralized control has led to explosions in commerce, communication and knowledge sharing. Some countries, feeling the world has moved to Intel while they were left in DOS, want a byte of the pie, too, and they want to launch a global cyber-grab to obtain it. Of course, any Web takeover would actually reverse the very growth the treaty seeks to capitalize. As The Wall Street Journal notes, "A top-down, centralized, international regulatory overlay is antithetical to the architecture of the Net, which is a global network of networks without borders." This treaty attempt should not be taken lightly. Indeed, if this new page in Internet control is allowed to load, hitting the "back" button won't be an option.

Internet Privacy

California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris reached an agreement with tech giants such as Google, Apple and Amazon this week that requires apps for mobile devices to have privacy policies. This is good election-year publicity because demanding privacy online is popular, but few actually read privacy policies, and even fewer actually do anything about unfavorable ones. Besides, these "fixes" won't do anything anyway.

The White House also issued guidelines dubbed a "Privacy Bill of Rights" -- a standard for how Web companies should handle user information. One staple is a "Do Not Track" feature within browsers that would prevent all compliant advertisers from tracking a user's activity. The administration is pushing Congress to pass legislation to codify such rights. Until then, the code is voluntary -- though we know how this administration often handles "voluntary" things.

Iran Stirs Trouble, Obama Warns Israel

Iran announced this week that it would halt oil exports to Britain and France in retaliation for EU sanctions levied on Iran. Both European nations planned to begin boycotting Iranian oil on July 1 and thus will be largely unaffected, but world oil prices jumped as much as $2 a barrel following Iran's announcement.

Also, the International Atomic Energy Agency cut short a visit to Iran after being denied access to the Parchin Armaments Complex near Tehran. As predicted last week, Iran was interested only in talking to the IAEA, not cooperating in that agency's nine-year ordeal to verify Iran's allegedly "peaceful" use of nuclear energy. Ironic, then, that the deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Wednesday that Iran would not back away from preemptive attack if it felt its nuclear program was threatened.

In response to this news, the Obama administration continued lobbying Israel not to attack Iran, while still sounding notes about a military option. U.S. Ambassador David Shapiro on Thursday reiterated that all options remain on the table, even saying the U.S. and Israel had coordinated and that "all necessary planning has been done to ensure those [military] options are available if at any time they become necessary." With the U.S. 5th Fleet never out of eyeball range from Iran's naval forces, and with several thousand American personnel in nearby Bahrain, Iranian retaliation following an Israeli strike is indeed a serious concern. Eventually Israel will come to the conclusion that it can wait no longer to strike -- if the United States has not led the rest of the world in securing Iran's compliance with its treaty obligations. The White House must put more pressure on Iran to comply than it puts on Israel to hold back and must above all lead in keeping the rest of the free world moving in the same direction on this issue.

Department of Military Correctness: Burning the Koran

A number of Korans were burned at the largest U.S. military base in Afghanistan in what U.S. officials called an accidental trash disposal. Apparently, the Korans were confiscated from a detainee facility because they contained "extremist inscriptions" and were "being used to facilitate extremist communications." Predictably, many adherents to the Religion of Peace™ were outraged and surrounded the base in protest, threatening violence and the lives of American soldiers. Sure enough, an Afghan soldier killed two American soldiers, likely in retaliation, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai has demanded a trial for the American soldiers who burned the books.

Our nation's commander in chief responded swiftly ... by apologizing to the Afghan government. "I wish to express my deep regret for the reported incident," Obama wrote. "I extend to you and the Afghan people my sincere apologies." He concluded, "The error was inadvertent; I assure you that we will take the appropriate steps to avoid any recurrence, to include holding accountable those responsible." That is utterly outrageous but perfectly in step with Obama's history of bowing and apologizing to the rest of the world while flying the one-finger salute to our servicemen and women. He should demand an apology, not give one.

Department of Military Readiness: Military Buildup

Good news and bad news on the military budget front. The good news is that the military is now looking at an increase of $770 billion over the next decade. The bad news is that it's the Russian military. On Monday, Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that Russia must modernize its military in order to deter others from grabbing its resources. Putin, who faces a March 4 "election" to regain the Russian presidency, didn't name anyone specific who might have an eye on Russia's vast mineral wealth, though in the past he has accused the U.S. of threatening Russia. In light of what the Obama regime is doing to the U.S. military, he clearly shouldn't worry about that. We suppose he just has to have a bogeyman.

"We mustn't tempt anyone with our weakness," Putin said, using a well known axiom that Obama should take to heart. Reminiscent of the 1960s and 70s, Putin said that over the next decade Russia plans on spending about 23 trillion rubles ($770 billion dollars) for more than 400 intercontinental ballistic missiles, 600 combat aircraft, dozens of submarines and navy ships, and thousands of armored vehicles. Russia will develop weapons capable of penetrating any potential U.S. missile shield, as well as precision long-range non-nuclear weapons.

Russia's plans contrast with Obama's gutting of the U.S. military, with deep reductions in troops, aircraft, ships and other weapons systems -- all of which is also reminiscent of the 1970s when the second worst president in American history made deep cuts to the U.S. military and sullied the White House for one term. America needs to ensure that the worst president in American history follows that one-term example.

Illegal Alien From Morocco Charged in Bomb Plot

He was looking to assist al-Qa'ida in a war that he would then watch from paradise in the company of virgins. Instead, 29-year-old Amine El Khalifi faces life in prison for his plot to bomb the U.S. Capitol. The scheme was discovered in time for law enforcement to provide El Khalifi with a disabled automatic weapon and a suicide belt containing fake explosives.They arrested him this week well before he reached the Capitol grounds.

Moroccan Muslim El Khalifi was already a criminal for overstaying a 1999 visa originally secured when his family visited the United States. An informant tipped off the FBI in January 2011 after a meeting in which El Khalifi declared that the War on Terror was a war on Islam, and that the group needed to be "ready for war." His original intent was to open fire on a DC restaurant, but at some point the plan changed to one of a suicide bombing of the Capitol. According to the FBI, El Khalifi detonated a test bomb in a West Virginia quarry last month.

Culture

Judicial Benchmarks: Discrimination and DOMA

The Supreme Court decided this week to hear a challenge to race-based admission policies at the University of Texas. In 2003, the Court upheld -- until 2028 -- University of Michigan Law School rules that favored minorities in college admissions on grounds that diversity was desirable and beneficial. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor did not explain those benefits in detail in her majority opinion, but recent research indicates that minorities are worse off for these policies. In many cases, blacks either drop out because of a mismatch with a school, or they change their majors after having been admitted to fulfill quotas in particular majors.

The Constitution guarantees equal protection of the law, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 expressly forbids racial discrimination -- except, apparently, when it benefits certain "underrepresented" minorities. (Asian Americans, for example, typically perform very well in school and on college entrance tests, and are therefore discriminated against, along with whites.) Let's hope the Court ends this odious practice once and for all.

In other court news, a federal judge in San Francisco has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional because it discriminates against same-sex married couples. The Obama Justice Department refused to defend the law, leaving it to a law firm hired by the House of Representatives. Discrimination based on race is clearly wrong in the above-cited University of Texas case. So-called discrimination based on the definition of an age-old institution -- marriage -- is not. Marriage means one man and one woman, no matter the courts' -- or the Maryland legislature's -- attempt to redefine it.

Faith and Family: Planned Parenthood's Hypocrisy

Planned Parenthood has demonstrated time and again that it will do anything to get its way, including trampling religious liberty. But its latest claim that a Virginia bill requiring pre-abortion ultrasounds is "akin to rape" has taken hypocrisy to new heights. Planned Parenthood already performs these ultrasounds before taking the life of a child.

Virginia legislators drafted HB 462 in response to several cases in which the absence of a pre-abortion ultrasound had horrific consequences for the patient. As a general rule, these are useful tests before any surgical procedure, because they alert the doctor to potential complications. They also predict the exact age of the baby, which could determine, among other things, the type of procedure needed. Planned Parenthood clearly outlined the protocol: Women seeking an abortion must undergo a health assessment, including blood work and an ultrasound.

Planned Parenthood's reaction only exposes it for what it truly is -- an organization that cares not about women but about its own bottom line. Now, along the way, it grievously insults rape victims with its comparison of ultrasound to rape.

Ok, so in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. Seven states filed suit against it Thursday.

'Occupy Our Homes' Destroys Those Homes

The Occupy Movement is the gift the keeps on giving. After trashing public parks around the country, it also inspired scads of spin-off movements, including "Occupy Our Homes." The initiative's goal is to break into foreclosed properties and renovate them for homeless families. Not surprisingly, the Occupiers' latest illegal enterprise was greeted by some as an altruistic idea. One such "Good Samaritan" was Brooklyn resident Wise Ahadzi. He and his family moved out of their East New York property after they were unable to make the mortgage payments. He had negotiated with the bank, but after hearing about Occupy Our Homes, he agreed to be part of the program. The Occupiers were to fix up the property in exchange for his activism.

We will never know the extent of these household improvements, however, because the house was completely destroyed by the very people the movement claims to help. A man who had been homeless until he was given the house ripped out the plumbing, stole the kitchen appliances and pulled up the carpeting. He also left trash strewn everywhere. Is he one of the "99 percent" the Occupiers keep blathering about? If so, we're in worse trouble than we ever imagined.

Canada to End Long-Gun Registry

In 1995, Canada's previous Liberal government enacted the Long Gun Registry Act in response to the Montreal massacre of 1989. As is usually the case with leftists, they overreacted to a lone individual's murderous rampage with firearms by punishing private, law-abiding gun owners. All long guns had to be registered by serial number and owner. The new Conservative government is acting to repeal the tyrannical boondoggle, though individual gun licenses will still be required, as will handgun registration. After 17 years, $2.7 billion and zero solved crimes, it's about time.

As well-known gun researcher John Lott wrote, "From 2003 to 2009, there were 4,257 homicides in Canada, 1,314 of which were committed with firearms. ... [T]he weapon was identified in fewer than a third of the homicides with firearms, and ... about three-quarters of the identified weapons were not registered. Of the weapons that were registered, about half were registered to someone other than the person accused of the homicide. In just 62 cases -- that is, only 4.7 percent of all firearm homicides -- was the gun registered to the accused. As most homicides in Canada are not committed with a gun, the 62 cases correspond to only about 1 percent of all homicides." Furthermore, "the registry was not important even in those cases. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Chiefs of Police have not yet provided a single example in which tracing was of more than peripheral importance in solving a case."

And Last...

One of the many problems with our Byzantine tax code is that citizens divide themselves into groups who want this or that tax cut, break or credit. In doing so, they seek a disastrous system of favoritism. The latest such group is the American Mustache Institute, which plans a "Million Mustache March" on Washington to rally for the passage of the "Stimulus To Allow Critical Hair Expenses," or STACHE Act. If enacted, this legislation would provide a $250 tax deduction for mustache grooming supplies. Of course, the march is planned for April Fools' Day, so we should probably take it for parody that it is. How come none of the Republican Big Shots (you can't call them leaders) are not calling for a true flat tax, everyone pays the same amount. This would require no tax forms or IRS. The other schemes are a flat percentage. If we are all equal we should all pay the same amount. Also no income tax withholding which was put in place by Joe Stalin's best friend FDR to pay for WW-II Imagine if the great unwashed had to write a check on April 15. No more I don't pay tax I get money back.

And speaking of Joe Stalin's best friend how come no calls to abolish FDR's social security scheme. I can't find any authorization for it in the Constitution. We still have a Constitution don't we? Romney's tax plan is a good start. The only problem is that tax policy is too whimsical in that it can be changed by the next administration. How about a constitutional ammendment (not that anyone really pays attention to the dusty old document anymore) that specifies or details legal tax policies for the feds.

I think that neither of these plans is worth the ink used to print them. The Fair Tax plan is the best. No more income tax, no more investment tax, no more death tax, no more tax tax tax... the only tax is at the retail level and EVERYONE, and I do mean EVERYONE pays that tax!!!! Could 2012 be America 's Last Presidential Election?

Food for thought.

I've asked this question to a number of people and most them respond

as if I were crazy for asking. They tell me that this is America ,

land of the free, and that there will always be elections. I tell

them that we are no longer the land of the free and that if Obama

gets re-elected in 2012, that this just may be America 's last

election.

In the past three years, the Obama administration has been very

carefully crafting the nation for a political take over by his

Marxist regime and this isn't just my opinion.

Popular radio talk show host Michael Savage is the son of Russian

immigrants and is very familiar with Soviet and European history.

Savage warned his listeners this week saying, "I have to tell you

that if this man, God forbid, is the next president of the United

States , we're going to be living in something along the lines of -

people say Europe .

I don't believe it's going to be like Europe - I think it will be

closer to Chavez's South American dictatorship.

"This is the most corrupt, incompetent, dangerous tyrannical

administration in American history. It's not politics as usual. It's

not just Democrats versus Republicans. Obama has a long history of

being at odds with American values and with America itself and the

core principles of this country.

They don't want government

sponsored opinions. They only want government-sponsored 'Pravda.'

That's exactly what the government-media complex tells you on a daily

basis - nothing but the government-media complex party line. Pay

attention. Your freedom may be at stake."

Over the weekend, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum

told a small group of people in an Iowa coffee house that, "Barack

Obama is not incompetent, ladies and gentleman. He knows exactly what

he's doing and why he's doing it. He sees America differently than

you see America ."

[Obama] has gone out of his way to divide this country in a way I

haven't seen since the Great Depression when Franklin Roosevelt went

around to divide his country. That's his hero. What makes America

great [in Obama's mind is that] the government takes money from

somebody and gives it to somebody else. No, that's what makes America , France ."

With his control over the Executive and Judicial branches of the

government, the stage is set for a complete takeover of the government.

Think about it.

Since taking office, instead of helping the economy, Obama has

purposely escalated the economic crisis by plunging the country into

unprecedented debt. He has a number of programs that are designed to

go into effect in January 2013, just in time for his second term of

office. The economic burden and increased taxes on everyone will be

enough to cause the final economic collapse of the country. As soon

as that happens, Obama declares Martial Law and assumes dictatorial

control of the nation.

The Department of Justice has already been subverting federal laws

to strip us of a number of freedoms. The Supreme Court and many of

the other federal courts have been seeded with socialistic liberal

judges that will rule in Obama's favor on virtually anything, thus

ending constitutional rule and law.

He's already changing the face of America 's military. Allowing

homosexuals to openly serve along with changing the retirement

program is causing many conservative military leaders to resign

commissions and leave the military. Some Pentagon officials are also

noting that an increase in the enlistment of radical Muslims into

the US military where they get all the training they need on weapons

and defense systems. We have no idea how many of them there are in

the armed forces or in what positions they may hold.

Obama has been wielding executive powers this past year as if he

were already a dictator. When Congress is not doing his bidding, he

simply bypasses them and used an executive order to accomplish it

anyway. This has set the stage for his disbandment of Congress. He

would not be the first world leader to take control of a nation and

disband the legislative branch of government.

He has been effectively using the media to anesthetize the public to

the dangers he poses. Like a patient being prepped for surgery,

people are numb to the changes and won't have a clue what took place

until they wake up in recovery and realize that free America has been

removed and replaced with a regime that may parallel those of Stalin,

Lenin, Mussolini, Hitler, Chavez and Castro.

For the sake of our children and grandchildren, I earnestly pray

that we are spared from what seems a certain future and that Obama is

overwhelmingly defeated in 2012. Otherwise, heaven help us.

Personally, I think that the entire debate over income taxes is obsolete. We are constantly being told to think "outside the box"...so why don't we?

Why don't we scrap the entire Marxist income tax system and rely instead on a retail-level sales tax. The Fair Tax (HR 25) does just this. It eliminates the 70,000+ pages of the current tax code and replaces it with a simple 24% retail sales tax on new goods. Period. Payroll taxes eliminated, medicare and social security funded and the same amount of revenue collected by the federal government. Just as important: EVERYBODY pays taxes! Gangsta's, tourists, drug dealers as well as normal everyday people. Most of that money that is "hiding" offshore (approximately 11 trillion dollars) would come home to be put to work in the United States economy, too. How's that for an economic stimulus?

Although a flat tax would be better than the convoluted, monstrous mess that is the current tax system, that is at best a temporary fix --- perhaps two or three election cycles before the tinkering begins to move us back towards a progressive redistribution of that rich guy's wealth.

The FAIR Tax (SB 25) would solve many, if not most of our problems - not just the economy, by the way: It would eliminate the corruptocrats' ability to sell "special interest" tax loopholes, as well as the availability for those oh-so-special-interests to buy them.

Mark, I was encouraged to see you mention, however timidly, the idea of a flat tax or the fair tax. I would prefer the Fair Tax, but a flat tax could make a lot of positive difference in the economy. But either would strip the politicians of their power to manipulate the ends. They are not going to stand for that.

The one fact is that no amount of tweaking is going to fix the present tax system. It can't be fixed. It must be abolished and replaced with some flat tax system which eliminates income based taxation.

Do you suppose we have any chance of this happening?

Even 9-9-9 is starting to look good.

Neither proposal is adequate; we do not need a cut; we need reform. In addition to resolving a tax reform proposal that makes sense, the agencies which are operating outside of the purview of the electorate and not accountable to them need to be taken apart, piece by piece, and this has to go hand in hand with a tax reform proposal. In my opinion, Romney is not up to this task.

All the Republican proposals are better than we have offered from Obama. But all merely move the deck chairs around on a ship that is sinking lower and lower. Or from another perspective the idea of permanance of ANY approach is a suspect as parties in power change. I see the taxes on production like I see a snarling pit bull dog on a chain. The Republicans want to shorten the chain and retain him. But he STILL exisits and the chain can be let out again! I support the Fair Tax HR25/S13 found at www.fairtax.org and I support Newt Gingrich's proposal to create a committee to address all 435 districts in America to edify and advocate for the NECESSITY of passing the Fair Tax. That way Congress will HAVE to act because the PEOPLE will demand it. Once you understand it(the Fair Tax)you will demand it!

The best proposal that I have seen is the "FAIR TAX" as proposed by Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder.

This is essentially a retail consumption tax that replaces all Federal taxes. Revenue neutral.

This would a U.S. manufacturing concern to export product from the U.S. with no imbedded tax, thus making U.S. industry much more competitive. Why has this aspect not been mentioned by any of the current politicians?

This plan is a tax plan, not a spending plan, and it would force those 50% of Americans who pay no Federal Income Tax now to have "skin in the game", which is what we need to have voters interested in their welfare.

Go to a Fixed National Sales tax used to fund all levels of Government: Federal, State & County. Prohibit all deficit spending by all Government agencies. Eliminate the IRS, County assessor departments, and save big time. Eliminate much of the financial disputes in this Country & many law suits.

All Government agencies would then be dependent upon a good National and local economy for their Funding. No loop holes and no catering to special interests. Let the individual control his spending habits as best meets his needs. That way we all share in supporting our smaller government, and none of us would be getting a free pass like the 46% or so that are now freeloaders.

Tourists and visitors are not required to pay income taxes, but contribute in their consumption.

People that are not citizens but are working and living here may fall into two different groups: Those working temporarily and returning home (migrant workers) and those working and making their permanent home in the US.

The first enjoy their labor, place their kids in school and move home when the crops / work is gone.

The later are parasites; and directly akin to those citizens that are “entitled” and pay for NOTHING !!

The solution – Remember – All citizens pay a minimum 5 % , 10% , SOMETHING !!

Parasites are dangerous – They live off of a healthy host, and may cause that host or individual harm. The Black legged Tick can cause lyme disease, which is a bacterial infection that can affect the blood system of an individual.

I live in Puerto Rico where it is well-known how easy it is to qualilfy for disability payments if you are "mentally ill." People will boast about how they fooled their doctor into approving their claim. The easiest way to get it is to tell your doctor that you want to eat human flesh and then start throwing things around in his/her office. One family I know about it stated a "fight" in their apartment. They started thowing toasters and screaming. When someone went to help them, they told the would-be helper not to worry, they were just staging the thing so the husband and/or wife could qualify for disability. I don't know what happened after that.

On top of that, it is very difficult for small businesses to survive here due to the PR governemnt's interference. One such businessman recently gave up and sold his business, telling people he was going to start collecting unemployment, go on welfare, etc, etc, etc.

Presidential "luxury" vacations (in that someone else is paying for these events) added to the recorded reservations as a State, and National Senator ("present")all describe the "noveau riche" syndrome. Just take, no requirement to return. There is another, more colloquial term, for such conduct. Suits this family quite well. The cushion of luxury at the expense of others should be quickly removed.

I believe in a flat tax, since everyone should be proud to be American and pay their taxes. No deductions. However, it may be difficult to pass as law since Congress will have to become accountable. If they want to spend more, they will have to raise taxes, and it will be very obvious to us all. But the beauty if it, is that will know how much they have to spend and should be able to prioritize based on that amount.

Romney has some good ideas, and the other Republican candidates state some better positions. Bujt what about a fair tax for everyone: across the board 17.5% FOR EVERYONE, and get rid of the cumbersome codes we have now. NO EXCEPTIONS, NO LOOPHOLES, NO DDDUCTIONS, VERY SIMPLE TAX REPORTING.

I think one vacation is enough because on March 19th I will be 72 years old and my one wish is:

that I could afford to go somewhere just once before I die. I have never had one where I could

afford to go anywhere, even when I was working. My wife keeps telling me that I went to a lot of places during my 20 years in the NAVY, but just once I would like to take her somewhere other than visiting children, grand children and reunions.

It would be nice if I could go as often as OBAMA does, but I would be satisfied with just one.

We pay for his, but can't afford to go ourselves. maybe he could pay for ours.

So, Mr. Last (who in this instance is first), let me see if I understand your position. You would have everyone, including the 1%, play a flat tax rate of let us say 20% to be fair to all.

OK. If I make $50,000 a year that would be a tax of $10,000, while someone who made $500,000 would pay $100,000. Fair?

I would only have $40,000 for my mortgage, utilities, food, car, and children; but the "rich" man would have $400,000.

How is that equitable?

I didn't see any real discussion of Paul's proposal. My understanding is that he plans to cut a Trillion (capital T) from the budget the first year. To do this his policy dovetails with foreign policy by bringing the troops home from almost all the bases around the world and using them to control the border and for Self Defense. We can still strike anywhere if needed, we just don't need to occupy other countries (certainly Korea, Germany, Britian and of course the disasterous Middle East [that seems to be doing no more good than to enflame the situations]).

I'm curious as to why a site claiming Patriotism does not even logically and openly discuss the idea's and plans of a candidate that has consistently voted in accordance to the Constitution and Bill of Rights, all the while explaining Free Market economics. While I agree I don't understand all his positions, don't they warrent discussion?

Once the Federal Reserve is removed or decertified then He would eliminate all income taxes if I read his op-eds on his site correctly.

Well, as I recall from my childhood, my dad, a chemical engineer in the pulp and paper industry, took the last two weeks in August every year, and that was it. We always went to the family's places in Maine, because that's where we are from. Eventually, the folks moved back there from NJ when dad retired. I have no problem with a sitting President taking a vacation, but not the kind these crumb bums take, and at my and our expense. It just isn't required. This guy and his wife are not only losers, but abusers. Their philosophy is "What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine too." I just can't wait to be able to say to them, "Don't let the door knob hit you in the butt on the way out!"

I must have missed something. Did any of the candidates propose that all of the so-called "entitlements" become taxable? As is done with Social Security?

Until, and unless, all Americans have a financial stake in the future of America there will be problems that are insurmountable. Those who freely receive should have no difficulty in freely giving a small portion of their unearned benefits back to those who make them possible.

I'm for a flat tax rate that applies to ALL income/benefits regardless of their source.

But modern day Americans don't realize what has been silently stripped away from them by the Progressive pols that get into the White House.

Tis a shame, for I know that I served on active duty for twenty years to support and defend the Constitution of the United States from ALL ENEMIES - foreign and domestic. No one has released me from that oath yet.

I believe the answer is that it is a proportioned tax (see Constitution).

The role of Government, certainly the Federal Government is not to produce equality, but equal opportunity. Admittedly the system in place for the past 150 years, especially the past 99 is unfair (to be as charitable towards it as possible).

Killing the goose that lays the eggs is not sustainable or prudent.

The real problem as I see it is in the law. We have no Common Law, no base code codified that makes us ALL legal, big and small. What we have is legislated law that trumps true Common Law,ie: "Do all you have agreed to do and do not encroach on other persons or their property.

When Madison and Paine(and many others) added on the Bill of Rights to the Constitution. It was not to be a set of laws for the public, we already had Common Law. These were to be additional rules for the Federal Government or as Jefferson stated, "the chains that bind them", to keep these educated ignoramuses from playing God with our personal liberties. Alas, that seemed to fall by the wayside almost immediately, culminating in the 14th Amendment that has lead to most of the "legality" that is used on us ever since.

Along with all the changes in taxes, loop holes in personal should be limited to home interest deduction only. If accomplished, a flat tax of 15 or 20% makes sense. Corporate tax should also be devoid of any loopholes and should be 15% with an added 5% deduction for all domestic corporations who do not produce products overseas.

In these turbulent times in America, we're running scared - all of us. The problems we face are both global and domestic. Indeed, many of us would say that the two biggest threats we face are Iran and our national debt.

Very true, but I would add one more - our fear to act. And I would say that our fear to act has been a big threat, for a long time now. Many would refer to this as political correctness in action.

We have a burgeoning dependent class, courtesy of years of milquetoast Republican leadership all too willing to compromise, versus Democrat leadership pandering for voters by masquerading as Santa Claus. And now, with the socialist Islamist Obama, purveying that he is in tune with Jesus Christ and also very arrogantly and offensively ascribing his policy mandates to Jesus's lessons, the growth of our dependent class has become asymptotic. Obama seeks to guarantee his voter base more aggressively and brazenly than any Liberal politician before him, by mandating 'charity' via the tax code, so that he can grab more wealth to redistribute, creating more government dependents. This reduces taxpayers' free will to that of slaves; and one wonders whether Jesus would approve.

It's no accident that food stamps and other entitlement programs have grown precipitously under Obama. This is a scheme, by design. Obama does this as part of his larger goal to impose socialism on America and thereby destroy our freedoms. So the fear, here, is the fear of bad press if we vote and push to terminate entitlement programs. The fear might also be a fear of poverty, when the entitlement recipients become cut-off from their handouts and need to find gainful employment in a bad economy that Obama has intentionally made worse. Obama continues to tweek the tax code to absolve more people from the duty to pay taxes, while he ramps up the percentage of people receiving government checks. He and his economic advisers also do nothing to address the chronic problem of low wages in the lower and middle classes. Yes, it's a thorny problem, but they have made no visible effort to have people earn more for the work they do, so that they can support themselves AND pay their taxes, with their own wages. Obama steadfastly keeps people wallowing in low wages, or no wages, and absolves them of having to pay taxes, while he targets higher-income taxpayers for income redistribution. He is thereby creating division in America, two warring classes: Earners and Dependents - and we're not married to each other! The Earners aren't heads of households by choice; it's an Obama mandate. America is being maneuvered into an eventual cataclysmic destitution. Let's be clear. There is nothing hopeful about this change.

Regarding Iran, a nation that has steadfastly equated America to Hell (or whatever is the Islamic equivalent of Hell) and Americans as the Devil's disciples, they have as part of their country's mantra, the long-term goal to eradicate America. They speak fluent Jihad, right to our faces. They are actively taking an offensive posture against us, and actively courting global allies, presumably to assist them with their plans to attack us in the not-too-distant future. Under these circumstances, I state the open question that many Americans have: why do we practice diplomacy with them?

The answer is fear. Fear of global scorn, fear of retribution, fear of U.N. sanctions against us. Whatever you can imagine.

The only other point I add right now, is that historically speaking, the various Peoples of the world sometimes fail to recognize when their leader is steering them into an abyss. People were afraid to act when Vladimir Lenin came to power, ditto for Stalin, Chairman Mao, and Adolf Hitler. Do I put Obama in the same class as those tyrants of history? Yes, I do. To many of us, it just seems that I can't legitimately make that comparison, because Obama just isn't "that" bad. Truth is, he just seems like less of a tyrant because with our Constitutional Republic, he can't get away with anything more outrageous than what he's already done and what he continues to do. He stretches Constitutional, moral, and ethical bounds on a daily basis, and practices what Rush Limbaugh calls a "soft tyranny", which simply means that he hasn't yet created a KGB or Gestapo equivalent. But make no mistake, Obama has the soul of a tyrant. His obvious desire and proclivity to place mandates on the American people is clearly proof of it. The Framers never meant government to be an instrument to place mandates on the People; it's only through generations of political tinkering by idiot legislators who thought they 'knew-better', that a police-state government spider web now covers the Constitution.

We just cannot be afraid to act against this madness, at the polls this November. If we fail to change course, it will be open-season on Americans. We will be the ducks while Obama and the Democrats will be in the duck blind, wielding their IRS rifles.

One of the reasons for Social Security Disability Fraud is there is a lack of means to report. I live in a community of 5,000 and count 12 abuses of social security disability just among the people I know. One acquaintance claim poverty and collects disability, food stamps, medicaid, and probably other free handouts then boast that he has rental properties in Steamboat Spring and Breckenridge that he make good money from under the table. Someone please tell me where I can report such abuse.

Regarding 'Competing Tax Visions", both the president's and governor's "plans" tinker around the edges to determine winners and losers in the income tax game. Why don't we just hit the "Delete" button on the income tax and totally replace it with the FairTax? HR25/S13, The FairTax Act of 2011, is the most researched and vetted tax bill that has ever been submitted, was accomplished using private funds and will accomplish all the above without adding trillions of dollars to the deficit. And it is "fair" to ALL US Citizens!

For those who think a flat tax is the way to go, just remember that the income tax was originally flat. It got so bad by the early '80's, it was "flattened" in 1986. The tax code/regulations have changed over 16,000 times since then to the tune of over 72,000 pages since 1913! The flat tax would still be an income tax subject to the same menatlity as the present income tax. Just replace it with the FairTax!

If we are taxed as individuals, there is no logical reason to have a corporate income tax. The profits, and losses, of a corporation should go to the owners, and tax on that profit should be paid by those owners receiving the benefits of their capital investment. The main reason for a corporation is to grant legal title to a group of people who wish to engage in a business that is too large for an individual to finance.

If you want a good reference on how the Constitution is supposed to work buy the book "The Founder's Guide to the Constitution". There you'll be able to see the Founders ideals on it. And then if you wish to see what the liberals are doing to us, get 'Saving the Bill of Rights' by Frank Miniter. Both are excellent books for conservatives to read for understanding how the Founders thought, and the twisting of the truth that the current Commie in Chief is doing.

We need to eliminate the incometax. About 50% of citizens don't pay any and therefore vote for any expenditure because it costs them nothing. Put in a Vat tax structure. Easier to collect and much more fair.

As for gasoline, put in an excise tax of 20% on all oil and gas products being exported and a 10% excise tax on same productsbeing imported. For a couple of weeks we will have very much higher prices but they will go down in a big hurry.

The proposals are not clear. To be revenue neutral, and I think that must be so given the deficit, Romney would eleminate all current deductions? What impact does this have on a struggling housing market, charitable contributions and those of us that live in states with very high state taxes, could end up paying more. I don't see this as wise public policy. THe currrent system evolved over a long period of discusion, compromise and evaluation. It is already baked into the price structure. We should be careful about radical change that could make things worse.

If I had Korans or similar material that might be used to pass material and information between inmates, I think it would be prudent to have them examined for intelligence value. It is not clear whether that was done. If then it was decided to destroy the material, and burning is acceptable, though less so than burial, to most Muslims, I would not burn it on a trash heap. Burning is also an acceptable way to retire and destroy damaged, worn US flags, but burning them on a trash heap is inappropriate, too. That said, the groveling of the US without demanding Afghan apologies for murders of US soldiers is appalling.

As to tax proposals,I like the Fair Tax. It has been poo-poohed by gov't in general and demo administration personnel in particular, but the more I read about it, the better it sounds. Of course we must not let them implement it without FIRST rescinding the 16th Amendment. The problem with it is they can't manipulate it easily without taxpayers seeing what they've done immediately. The current tax code is so complex, minor changes are never even mentioned or noticed until it's much too late to fix.

No lavish vacations every long weekend and holiday. Very little travel by air. They were just like everyone else. They saved their money. 1. Any income tax, even a flat tax, is a can of worms. In addition to other objections, no one is wise enough to define NET income, especially those that try, and a gross income tax is totally unworkable.

2. A consumption tax (i.e., the Fair Tax, more or less), taxes the money that the wealthy spend on themselves, not on their capital investment. To anyone who understands Austrian economics, the difference is fundamental.

3. As a side note, income and total wealth may diverge in a successful capitalist system, but standards of living converge. American poor not only eat well enough to be obese, but everyone (except me!) has smart phones, cable or satellite TV with every option, cars, Michael Jordan sport shoes, etc. Yesteryear's kings would have been green with envy.

The only fair tax on income is a flat tax on all income, earned by either work, savings, or investment. It is reasonable - in fact necessary - to have a minimum represented today by the personal exemption, but all income above that should be taxed at the same rate regardless of source or amount. Inheritance is not income to those who inherit, it is the distribution of what was income to the deceased to the legal survivors or designated beneficiaries. How a person chooses to use that income should have no effect on income taxes, which would remove all other deductions. This would severely cut back the cost of the IRS and force tax lawyers to find productive work, whoch would both be beneficial to the economy. The same principle should be applied to businesses, with the difference that the basic costs of doing business are not part of the income. The type of business a company does should not result in either a reward or a penalty in taxes. The reason all this is not part of our current tax code is the politicians have made the tax code a vehicle of welfare. Welfare and taxes should be separated and kept that way.

The laws were passed in accordance to proper procedure, and the courts only have the constitutional authority to determine specific cases in light of the clear text of the laws that apply. When are our legislatures going to take back thier constitutional authority and properly limit the power of the judiciary. If we the people don't like the laws our legislature pass we have the right to vote the offender out and send other to the legislature. When judges write new laws and regulations through "interpretations" the people are disenfranchised; the most unconstitutional action of all!

"Deal with skyrocketing fuel prices?" do you want to go by vehicle? You pay for the fuel. The only way to conserve is to not purchase! The situation is extreme for those that use a great deal of fuel. Truckers. Most trucks purchase fuel in 200 gallon quantities. Or more. Diesel is near, or over, four dollars a gallon. Do the math! That trickles down to the can of soup at the superstore!Fuel consumption figures run from about 6mpg to about 8mpg for those "big rigs". At 60 it is about 8. At 75 it is about 5 or so. Maybe six. The cost to market an item in 1950 was about 85/15. 85 % to produce it, 15% to get it to market. That is now reversed. The most infectious element of grocery prices is fuel consumption by the trucks that deliver it. Thus higher fuel prices, to the point of putting truckers out of business, drives up the cost of everything in the consumption inventory. And everything else! Truckers? Yeah, but diesel locomotive use a lot of fuel, too! Everything is affected! And Mr. Obama/Sotero wants to drive fuel prices to about six bucks for a gallon of regular! Do the math! More than one way to sabotage an economy--bring down a Republic. Convert it to a third world second class entity with just a few "permanent leaders" at the top. Any guesses on who that "wannabe" might be? Sabot (w/parenthesis) is the French word for shoe, the wooden shoe, typically. 25. Defund NPR, PBS, NEA, Nat. Endowment of Arts, etc;

26. Defund Planned Parenthood, ventures, and government research;

27. Defund Congressional commuting on government jets;

28. Audit and/or disband the Federal Reserve;

29. Freeze annual budget total until balanced budget is achieved;

30. Increase margin requirements on all stock market short sales;

31. Rein in EPA and relax regulations for business and oil drilling;

32. Treat all welfare benefits and Social Security as taxable income;

33. Mandate annual tax filing for all citizens, legal or not, income earned or not, to be used as basis for public assistance, census, and as basis for a Medicare version of Universal HealthCare, funded as a by-product of the National Sales Tax (#36). Graduated Income Tax tables (#49) should be identical for corporate, partnership, individual filing; charitable and non-profits. Eliminate all tax loopholes and subsidies.

34. On 1040 charge $1 for each person listed for annual census count.

35. Make employee paid health premiums deductible from taxable income in addition to the STANDARD DEDUCTION to place them on parity with non-taxable employer paid health insurance.

36. Institute a 3% National Sales Tax (NST) with NO exceptions for resale, charity, non-profits, religious, education, or government. The many cannot be continually supported by the diminishing few. A 3% NST might raise $7 Trillion annually, reduce national debt, spread tax burden to all, legal residents or not. Allocation should be the first 1% toward Budget, 1% toward debt reduction, 1% for Universal Medicare (identical to Medicare plus monthly) for all legal residents of the U.S.

37. The 1% NST collections are dedicated to Universal Medicare and automatically eliminate most if not all Federal and State Medicaid benefits, costs, and overhead. State Medicaid mandated costs would be eliminated, reducing State budget shortfalls and tax requirements.

38. According to a 7/6/10 analysis by attorney Lanny Davis published in The Hill, there were $755 Trillion in total transactions in the U.S. in 2008; $443 Trillion if exempting stock transactions. Accordingly NST on stock market transactions should be set at 1/2 of 1%, beating the International movement toward the inevitability of this type of tax.

39. There should be no exemption for sales of any product or service whether for Resale, Church, Government, Education, Private or Public organizations; Imports, Cash, or assets transferred out of the country, including corporate transfers to foreign subsidiaries; Tax On-Line sales and sellers, EBay, Private sellers, Barter, PayPal and Credit Card Companies. Payment Clearing Banks would be depositories for NST, similar to collection of payroll taxes while Government 3% tax payments are to be used for that particular government debt reduction.

40. According to PatriotPost.us on July 8, 2010, unionization of federal employees resulted in non-military federal employee salaries average 40% higher than private sector, but while private sector benefit packages average $9,882, government and union employee benefits average $32,115. This imbalance cannot be sustained. Federal wage and benefits must be frozen until parity is achieved.

41. An estimated 48%+ of citizens pay no Income Tax while 24%+ do not pay Payroll Tax. This jeopardizes a Balanced Budget as too large a number of households owe nothing in federal taxes, casting an ever increasing burden on the diminishing number of actual tax payers, a situation that is not sustainable. The 3% National Sales Tax will level the playing field by spreading the burden to all and give new life to the Bible story of the “Widow’s Mite,” who gave her last two coins.

42. Money and benefits received for NOT working should not be tax-free or treated differently than the same amount of wages and benefits received by actual workers. There are documented cases of welfare recipients benefiting unfairly by having benefits equal to an actual worker’s wages but employees must pay taxes and benefits out of their wages and the equivalent “Earnings” to a welfare recipient are free of any of those charges.

43. A welfare recipient receiving $30,000 in “BENEFITS” receives substantially more than a taxpayer earning $30,000 because taxpayers pay Federal, State and Local taxes and work expense while Welfare recipients get a free ride without related costs of working. Housing grants, food stamps, medical benefits, and other benefits must be paid for by the taxpayer worker who is “penalized” for working.

44. The war on drugs has been lost forever. New drugs appear weekly, and the only answer is to decriminalize street drugs but prosecute drug users only for tax evasion and non-payment of tax on sales, or being under the influence, similar to alcohol, when another transgression is committed while under the influence. Incarceration costs have skyrocketed and have become counter-productive while inhibiting law enforcement from pursuing real criminals.

45. Drug users turn into sellers to support their habit and the only thing that inhibits them is to double prosecute users who commit another transgression, and deny welfare benefits to users and sellers alike. Drug testing is a criterion for jobs and must be for benefits also.

46. Follow the money. Prosecute drug sellers by going after untaxed income based on assets apparently with no related visible income.

47. I don't think external pressure always causes collapse from within, but it sure tends to. The very same thing has happened in this country with the so-called "poor". Stretching way back, the government was called upon to alleviate bad economies. Their solution was entitlement programs, i.e. income redistribution. The result has become a society where nearly half of us are deemed too poor to pay federal income taxes. That 47% number has done nothing but grow over time and the amount of "poor" people never drops. And Obama wants us to accelerate in that direction.

You're to be congratulated on all your hard work and analysis, but I have some constructive criticism.

Without trying to analyze everything you created, I'll just say the following:

1) Aside from your moments of brilliance in which you said to delete a department or completely defund something, I think your system will be doomed to failure because it can too easily allow big government to grow again.

2) You have too many numbers. That's part of the problem with our present tax code. You're too complex. The Founders' government worked because it was simple. It was simple because the government did very little; it had limited, discreet authorities. As proof of this, take note of nearly all of the government policies you would change or eliminate, and I ask you, when were those policies enacted? I'd bet they were enacted within the last 100 years, perhaps as little as 75 years, and some within 50 years. The only real way towards tax reform is to get back to limited government. This will reduce society's overhead (essentially, the cost of government is the overhead to all our family enterprises, combined), increase the wealth in the private sector, expand the job base, rejuvenate private charities, enhance freedom, and all sorts of other benefits, too numerous to mention.

One of you wants a flat income tax. The other wants the fair tax on purchases.

Right now in America, we have degenerated to such an extent that the bottom 47% of us, who've been absolved from having to pay any federal income taxes, are still able to vote.

Taxpayers go to the polls to ostensibly vote for candidates who will not increase their taxes. Essentially, taxpayers vote to preserve their hard-earned dollars. By comparison, NON-Taxpayers go to the polls to vote for candidates who will take more taxes from taxpayers, so entitlement programs will continue. Essentially non-taxpayers vote their say over the destiny of taxpayers money, whereas taxpayers can't cast their votes over the destiny of nontaxpayers' money because the nontaxpayers don't pay taxes.

So my question to both of you, is whether under your respective systems, can they be set up so that everyone pays some taxes. You see, if everyone pays taxes, then everyone will have a vested interest in reducing the size and cost of government because the majority of taxpayers won't want to pay for government largesse.

Not being an economist i am of the opinion that a flat tax or consumption tax which i cannot properly explain the difference between the two, seems to me the proper route to take, so that when you purchase something you pay 18% [example] doesn't matter if it is a home yacht or whatever, you pay 18% and that is it. Every one pays the same, i guess that is tooooo simple for Washington to deal with.

Pray for CHANGE we can believe in in 2012!

Does it prevent you from worshipping in your own chosen religion? There is not ANY rationale beyond that of "wealth redistribution" for Any Conservative supporting any form of income taxation. Period. Our founding fathers did not place any mechanism in our Constitution to justify what the "Progressives" pulled on an inatentive American public in 1913.

Think about this. An income tax is a top bullet point of Karl Marx's wonderful plan of wealth redistribution in Mein Kampf.

Anything that proports to call itself real tax reform is a charade--merely move the deck chairs around on a ship that is periously sinking lower and lower. ANY approach that avoids the issue of Permanant tax reform is subject to continual manipulation each time parties in power change, just as Jeffrey Locke has already mentioned. To quote his comments further: "I see the taxes on production like I see a snarling pit bull dog on a chain. The Republicans want to shorten the chain and retain him. But he STILL exists and the chain can be let out again!"The ONLY tax reform that is Truly Reform is the Fair Tax -- HR25/S13 found at www.fairtax.org.

The only candidate we should be supporting in this most critical of elections should be Newt Gingrich, who has proposed committees that will elucidate and advocate for the necessity of passing the Fair Tax in all 435 districts in America.

People have had it with the Administration And a Congress that has become an open Festering pool of Corruption, enabled by those actions put in place in 1913 (including the creation of the Federal Reserve) which allowed for the largest transfer of wealth from a hardworking population in the History of the World. Almost 100 years and everything has gotten worse and worse. The charade that Anything will change if we continue to "play" around the issue of income taxation should be apparent to any sane and moral individual. Romney's plan, as is also true of the other candidates' plans, are a step back in the right direction. I would like to see something worked out for a "Fair Tax" that would alleviate or preclude all other taxes including state sales and income taxes as well. This one would be the fairest of all. I believe it to be illegal for the federal government to levy an income tax on individuals. It should be levied on the states, and the states would collect from individuals their share as well as the share going to the federal government. The overall effect should be a greatly lowered tax burden for everyone compared to what every family or consumer has to pay now (does away with the IRS, for one thing---a tremendous savings).

People who complain about discriminatory treatment relating to the status of being married or not being married, have a very legitimate point.

I believe marriage is a religious construct that government has inappropriately usurped. If government had never decided to regulate marriage, there would never have been any pros or cons, either socially or economically, attached to the institution of marriage. No insurance discrimination and no tax discrimination. If marriage was exclusively a religious practice, then anybody could get married to anybody, within the church's rules, and then anybody could have the marriage of their choice by finding the right church.

Legal issues relating to any children produced, could be handled within civil law.

Government has taken jurisdiction over marriage away from the church. They are also, and have been for a long time now, co-mingling taxpayer monies into charitable institutions, via various special arrangements with the unsuspecting (and naive) leaders of these institutions. The leaders don't realize they're going to lose control until the state begins to make policy mandates, justifying it with the fact that they have to be good stewards of the taxpayer monies they have invested into the charitable institutions. The special arrangements, in this sense, become an extortion scheme. This is another way to instill socialism into society, by eliminating private-sector charitable organizations, replacing them with taxpayer-funded government handout centers.

We all need to see this government encroachment for what it is. I think with Obama, the Catholic church, at least, is finally feeling the sting of a cold slap in the face. And I hope they've realized their folly in their support of our tyrant-in-chief. Hopefully more Americans are beginning to wake up to this.

Anyone see the parallels between the Afghan riots and the LA riots that followed the Rodney King beating (acquital of the cops)? Are we supposed to believe there wasn't an element of criminal opportunism in Afghanistan? All that cheap heroin and still the short fuses?

FYI: In addition to the drain on social security that the 2% rollback creates, the administration is allowing individuals who have lost their long term unemployment benefits, to claim they are "disabled", usually under a mental health diagnosis and to now collect social security disability payments (under ssi and/or ssdi). This is creating a significant drain on the system, as well as artificially lowering the unemployment rate.

Michelle Obama is not an elected official or Federal employee. The cost of any vacation she takes should be taken out of her husband's paycheck.

New federal employees receive 4 hours of vacation per pay period until they have 3 years of total federal service (then they earn 6 per and with 15 years earn 8 per). Since Obama was a first time Senator when running for office I suspect he would still be in the 4 hour/pay period group and should not be able to take more than 104 hours of vacation per year - which is 13 days.
