The Truth About Pledges
The Foundation
"An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation." --John Marshall
Editorial Exegesis
Why is the answer so hard?"One of the more amazing post-election spectacles is the media celebration of Republicans who say they're willing to repudiate their pledge against raising taxes. So the same folks who like to denounce politicians because they can't be trusted are now praising politicians who openly admit they can't be trusted. The spectacle is part of what is becoming a tripartisan ... attempt to stigmatize Grover Norquist as the source of all Beltway fiscal woes and gridlock. Mr. Norquist, who runs an outfit called Americans for Tax Reform, is the fellow who came up with the no-new-taxes pledge some 20 years ago. He tries to get politicians to sign it, and hundreds of Republicans have done so. He does not hold a gun to their heads. Grover's ... apparent crime against Washington is that he now actually wants to hold politicians to what they willingly signed. If enough Republicans will disavow their tax pledge, then the capital crowd can go about agreeing to a grand fiscal bargain that raises taxes, pretends to cut spending and avoids the January 1 fiscal crack-up that the politicians have set us up for. Voters are supposed to believe that only Grover stands in the way of this happy ever-after. ... The truth is that Mr. Norquist doesn't have such power. The voters do. Mr. Norquist merely had the wit to channel the electorate's limited government beliefs into a single-issue enforcement mechanism. ... The real problems are a political class that won't control its spending and economic policies that are retarding growth. That's where the GOP should keep its public focus. Mr. Norquist's tax pledge has been one of the few restraints over the years against those bad Beltway appetites. Democrats demonize Grover because they know this. They want to pit Mr. Norquist against other Republicans precisely so they can dispirit the tea party grass-roots and take away the tax issue as a GOP advantage. Republican voters know that elections have consequences and that Mitt Romney's defeat means there will be policy defeats too. But they will give the House and Senate GOP credit if it fights for its principles and drives a hard bargain." --The Wall Street Journal

"[I]f the Democrats are really serious about soaking the rich, why don't they come out in favor of replacing the income tax -- which is basically a mechanism to prevent the upper-middle class from becoming wealthy -- with a wealth tax? Holders of great family fortunes can easily live off their inheritances, with no taxable 'income' whatsoever, but imagine if the Kennedys, the Rockefellers, and those who grabbed the swag by marrying the widow of a rich Republican senator, were forced to cough up a sizable percentage of their estates to the feds each year. Then you'd see real tax reform, and in a hurry." --columnist Michael Walsh
"[R]aising taxes would result in less economic activity, not more. Herein lies the key to understanding why the left wants higher taxes for 'the rich.' To the rich-should-pay-more crowd, the question of whether raising taxes hurts economic growth is less important than the issue of 'fairness.' ... Andy Stern, the former head of the Service Employees International Union, the fastest-growing American union, describes the economic philosophy of the left: If raising taxes on 'the rich' hurts the economy, that is an acceptable price. 'Western Europe,' says Stern, 'as much as we used to make fun of it, has made different trade-offs which may have ended with a little more unemployment but a lot more equality.' Any questions?" --columnist and radio talk-show host Larry Elder
"The Left misunderstands conservatives when it believes the argument over tax rates is an argument about greed -- that wealthier Americans simply want to grab all the money we can. In fact, many of the top 5 percent are among the most generous people in the world; they just tend to give their money to charities that actually produce results. Leaving aside -- for the moment -- the increasingly inverse correlation between taxation and individual liberty (a crucial consideration all its own), we conservatives look at the vast bureaucratic beast with a sense of utter futility. We opt out of government projects and seek personal independence in part because we see government fail time and again -- and not for lack of resources. For millions, government is less 'the thing we do together' than it is the 'monster inflicted upon us,' and the taxes we pay are less a contribution to the well-being of the community than a ransom payment to keep the monster away from our door." --columnist David French
"Emboldened by U.S. backing and funding, Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood heavyweight Egyptians elected to be their president, has essentially declared dictatorial powers -- i.e., that his 'sovereign' actions are beyond judicial review. ... His objective is to clear the field of secular interference so the Islamist-dominated 'constituent assembly' can finish writing and ramming through a new constitution that further suffocates Egypt in the classical sharia framework favored by the Brothers and their allies.... [T]he Brotherhood in Egypt is following an easily accessible, albeit widely ignored, game-plan. It is the one by which Islamists moved Turkey back into their column, away from real democracy. It took Erdogan's Islamist government a decade to flip Turkey. I predicted that things would go much faster in Egypt, where they never tried an 80-year secularization project, where Islamic supremacism has deep roots, and where the Brotherhood has always been a powerhouse. It's happening. Fast." --former DoJ attorney Andrew C. McCarthy

We've had over 300 filibusters in the last six years -- it's unprecedented. What? "I think that the ultimate message of that wonderful movie ['Lincoln'], I thought that it was an act of patriotism on Spielberg's part to make it in that way. The ultimate message is bring back earmarks! ... Earmarks have always been the grease, you know, that greases the wheels that gets things done. "Tolerance" and revisionist history: "Word to the wise: Thanksgiving is the proper holiday to tell your family that you're a homosexual. It's arguably secular, so you're confronting tradition, not faith. ... If it helps, think of homosexuals as the rightly worried tribe sitting across from the Puritans. They're slut-shaming slimebuckets: This group of thugs, hiding behind declarations of piety about 'the sanctity of life,' needs to be labeled exactly as they ARE: Forced-birth slut-shamers, advocates of murder, hypocrites, pedophiles, enablers of rape and incest, and generally all-around lying slimebuckets." --Daily Kos blogger BadKitties

If the electorate is as stupid as to elect such representatives/legislators as are unable to see the facts before their eyes and behave accordingly, all we can do is to un-elect them - and that is not done quickly.
It may be that they - and we, too - may have to learn the hard way. If ever.

Mr. Doan;
It seems to me the electorate over the last 25 years continuously votes their pocketbooks with the result that each election results in legislatures and administrations that continue to up the ante on taxation and spending.

The only pledge that is important is to the Constitution. Anyone supporting Norquist, Ryan who loves Any Rand and her book of fiction or those who want to leave the Union can no longer call themeselves Patriots...!

Lee, I for one would be happy to see California leave the union. I suspect they would never do so though, as the people and legislators of your state have in the backs of their minds that the rest of us will come to the rescue when you founder on your own excesses.
But secessionist impulses themselves are not unpatriotic. Those who have proposed it do not do so out of disdain for the Constitution, but from love for it. It is the Democrats and their slavish minions, who no longer see the Constitution as the driving center and principle of our nation, but as a mere impediment to their ambitions, who have caused the problems.
We don't want to leave America; we want to go find it again.

Perhaps you should READ the constitution and Ayn Rand's "fiction." In Atlas Shrugged, Colorado is taxed uniquely, as a punishment, which contradicts the U.S. constitution's statement that all "...imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States..." Article 1, Section 8. Succession from the union should be taken more as a protest than a desire. The lessons of the U.S. Civil War should be cause for anyone to seriously consider such action - unless it is clear that the preamble of the Constitution is no longer a valid statement of this Nation’s goals.
The only fiction in Rand’s works is the way the stories are told; they are grand fables. That, however, does not make them false. Sometimes Patriotism requires stern, even contradictory, action. Rand’s stern action in Atlas shrugged is inaction - let the system fail. Secessionists call for division as action; they should simply put their efforts into supporting the “fiscal cliff.” Forcing entitlement cuts, even in the face of defense cuts, will be far more therapeutic than trying to go it alone.

I hate to say it, but I feel like it's time for a tactical retreat. Taxes WILL rise come January 1; the terms of the "fiscal cliff" assure it. The Democrats know that all they have to do is wait and watch it happen, while letting their whores in the media spin whatever damage that comes as Republicans' fault.
Once all the taxes have risen back to pre-Bush levels, they can come to the rescue of all but the top 1% (or 2% or whatever arbitrary level they want to demagogue as the undeserving rich) and offer to lower taxes back for the lower 98%. Are we REALLY going to get on the wrong side of THAT?
If, standing on the principle that everyone's taxes should go BACK to their 2003-2012 levels, we refuse to lower most unless the richest few also get their cut, it will be very difficult to convince voters that we are NOT the "party of the rich."
It's not a matter of whether or not taxes are going to rise for the rich. They WILL; we lost that battle last spring when they negotiated this stupid, stupid deal. It's just a matter of how badly the Republicans will damage themselves in the process.
Let the top tiers of the taxes rise. Be sure to say we are against it, but that we want to put the good of the country first (as we do.) Then when unemployment continues to rise, and it can be seen that it is the rise in taxes on small business owners and others of the "maker" class (as opposed to the "taker" class) we'll be in a much better position to negotiate them back down as part of an overall leveling reform of the tax code.

With tax rates as they are now in 2005 & 2006 the Gov't had more tax revenue than any period in History. We don't need to raise taxes we need to raise GDP. The keystone Pipe line and oil drilling permits would do this and the rest would fall in line.

Since taxing the wealthy is The Presidential chew toy and the mantra of the liberals, do it! Id pay 5-10% more just to watch them find something else to blame for it not working. And if its the chew toy that will unplug negotiations to avert a fiscal cliff, do it. The problem is, it will not solve a 16 trillion dollar deficit, is a minor amount of money and a political talking point. The issues are curbing spending, quit giving to those who wont work, those who hate this nation, and funding programs that have never worked. But, we all know that wont happen because our politicians as a whole are more interested in feel good keep me in office programs than making hard decisions.

The problem I see coming is the anarchy created from the devaluation of our currency. When it takes a wheel-barrow full of it buy a loaf of bread then we'd better watch out.

The WSJ hits the nail on the head. Raising taxes, and pretending to cut spending is exactly the plan and is what has been demonstrated to date. Show me (I'm from Missouri) demonstrated performance on cutting spending until it hurts, then come back to me for more tax revenues. To do otherwise is fiscal insanity.

For most people, it seems, politics is a very bad word and politicians, they are all crooks. But politics, being the science of perception, it is only itself and themselves, including the politicians, to blame. But reality says otherwise, no, not that there aren't any or that most politicians are crooks, but the point on reality is that who is to blame for these facts to be real is the people. Why? Because the people seem to rely to much on these individuals, giving them all the power to destroy lives and families while just sucking more power and control over everyone. The goodness of the American Revolution and the constitution conceived as a consequence of it is that it was giving power to the people, not just a bunch of people who chose to be politicians, but to each and every individual, citizen of the country. By limiting the power of the government, and its size, the people could rely on the constitution to protect them from these 'crooks' everyone wants to see messing with the future of the nation, to the point of almost forcing it to extinction. Citizen participation is what is the answer, not just by voting, but by recognizing fact that as politicians swear to protect the constitution, so does the citizen of the nation and either has the responsibility to defend it and make sure the public servants, those people who are in office pretending to represent the people, are the ones more obligated to do so, to defend the constitution. Taxes upon taxes and more taxes, is what bad politicians, evil ones, appeal to sell the people that idea that collective strength is the answer to everything and so,not even charity is a duty of anyone any more, included politicians, because to them is nothing but a selling gimmick. The world needs to go back to the individuality of the human person, identity and the dignity we all have been created as to God's image and likeness, because we are all social individuals, but from our individuality.

Our second President, John Adams, tells us why this country is going down the tubes: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." We are no longer the moral and religious people we used to be, so we elect amoral and non-religious people to lead us. You can't explain this and recent administrations any other way.

Why does the President talk down to us as if we are a bunch of nerds. We know that 95% of those who voted for the President pay 0% taxes. So he really is not talking to his voters. He's talking to those who voted for the majority of the House of Representatives. The ones that control the purse strings. If the Speaker used his head for something besides a hat rack he would realise the power he has and force the Presidents hand to get spending under control. Mr Speaker please stand up!

I feel that the American people are being held hostage by taxation. Most of us that are middle class or below, are struggling to pay what we pay now in taxes. I don't claim to know the answer for any of this, I am not an accountant, but I do know that we can pay no more, and if the government doesn't curtail its spending, I feel the American people should think twice about paying what the government thinks is due to them. If all the taxpayers would go on strike and not pay until those in power reach a GOOD budget, one good for all of us, maybe they could stop arguing about it and get their work done. The American people are fed up. Or should I say, the working class of people are fed up, and those that have never worked are quite happy, they will be fed and clothed until the rest of us run out of money.
