The Right Opinion
Can Mitt Romney Win?
For months, we've heard the chattering class tell us that Mitt Romney was the only acceptable Republican nominee. He was the only candidate who could beat Barack Obama; he was the only one smart enough, savvy enough, and milquetoast enough to defeat Obama in a general election. While Newt Gingrich was too hot and Rick Santorum was too cold, Romney was the Goldilocks candidate, everyone's second choice.
The question now is whether Romney will be Americans' first choice.
He faces an uphill climb. President Obama rides at about 50 percent in the polls nationally, despite the fact that he has presided over the worst economy since the Great Depression, destroyed the possibility of a moderate Muslim Middle East for the next generation at least, and polarized Americans along sex and race lines. Obama has rammed national health care down our collective throat, and he has threatened openly to raise taxes -- and yet half of Americans are perfectly happy with him.
Meanwhile, Romney lags behind Obama in key swing states, according to the most recent polls. He has trouble with female voters -- Obama defeats Romney 57 to 38 percent among females as of this week -- and blue-collar voters. He leaves most conservatives lukewarm; the others he leaves absolutely ice cold.
So can Romney win?
His electability was always based on the notion that Republicans must win the independents. Romney, it was assumed, could appeal to the independents because he is not a social issues candidate. He's widely considered a manager rather than an ideologue. He's a pragmatist rather than a conservative. He's a "get things done" guy, largely void of vision but capable of putting America back on her feet. You won't hear him make a convincing case for American rights, freedoms and liberties -- but he'll sure make a solid case for fiscal reform of particular entitlements if the debt is unsustainable. That's not inspiring stuff.
For that sort of candidate to win, the incumbent must be perceived as a full-fledged extremist. Obama, it was safe to assume, would be seen that way by the American public. But the public has largely refused to cooperate. Thanks to a pliable public and a militant media, Obama is seen not as a radical but as a typical Clinton-esque, left-leaning moderate. Obama, in other words, has a solid lock on a large swath of the middle of the country.
Conservatives needed either a crystallizing candidate -- a candidate with a unique capacity to identify the ideological conflict -- or a crystallizing moment, in which the American public suddenly recognized Obama for who he truly is. They didn't choose a crystallizing candidate. They chose a risk averse candidate, highly competent but bland.
And so conservatives must wait for a crystallizing moment. That moment will not come on the domestic policy front. Obama will shy away from any major initiatives from here to the election. He will largely rally against the rich, against the "elites" -- against the Mitt Romneys of the world. And Romney will be left to campaign on Obama's record, twisted and turned by the media from dross into gold. Obama's inflationary policies have driven up the stock market and driven down the unemployment rate, thanks to massive workforce dropouts. Oil prices will undoubtedly drop precipitously at a convenient moment, so long as Obama makes OPEC countries a few promises on Israel behind the scenes.
If there is to a crystallizing moment, it will come on foreign policy. Obama's foreign policy has, if possible, been more damaging than his domestic policies, which simply doubled down on Bush's spending addiction. Obama's foreign policy is different in kind: It sees America as a nasty force in the world, a country in need of a lesson. And America may well get that lesson.
Hence Obama's dramatic attempts to undercut Israel on taking out the Iranian nuclear program. If Obama is forced to choose between his hard-left and Islamist allies and an American public largely friendly to Israel, he will reveal himself to be the radical he truly is.
This election cycle started with the promise that it would be run on economics. It will be run on economics, for the most part. But if Romney is to win, he will win on foreign policy.

The short answer to the question is YES!!! As long as He doesn't go out and shoot a trayvon, or slap a pregnant hispanic woman, or burn a Koran. OK, he could burn a Koran and could probably win without the new black panther vote. We could run sponge bob against this treasonous marxist and win. Now Romney must run Obamao against himself, just show his treasonous words and actions, let him defeat himself, the material is endless.

The answer to your question, Ben, is no. No, Romney can't win. I regret saying it, but I believe it's true. So, why can't he win?Women. Women may be the ones to bring this country down. They love Obama. He is the protector of their reproductive rights and their rights in general, to hear them tell it. Besides, "he speaks so beautifully and has such a great smile!"All races except the white race. Just read the news and the comments made by the majority of Hispanics (a large and ever-growing segment of our country), and the immigrants from socialist countries world over.Class. Obama is a master at the use of class warfare. This, more than any other factor will win the race for him because most "middle-class" Americans will buy into his smooth-talking rhetoric. The rich are out to get you!Stupidity. Most Americans seem to know so little about what's going on that it's frightening. Most seem to lose their minds to the numbness that is American Idol and other such trash. Their motto? Don't bother me with relevancy.I could go on, but these reasons alone will propel the Obamanation into yet another term, in which he will have the "flexibility" to take down America. And our hope is Mitt Romney? If it wasn't so sad, it would be hilarious.

@Tex I cannot share your pessimism. I believe more women are smarter than stupid, and they are now advancing faster than men in the workforce, with more women executives. I believe that there are more producers than leaches, and will see the disaster that is Obamanomics. He may win the vote of the slaves in the slums, but there are many cogent individials of all ethnic persuasions that don't like being lied to. Class warfare cannot mask the dismal state of the economy, no matter the lies of the ministry of propoganda on the true unemployment numbers. Those who Obamao put out of work will not vote for him. My take on the intelligence of the voting population is elevated from yours. The truley ignorant and stupid won't vote, or be able to identify a polling place. We, who have been in the military, can see the treason in his foreign policy of betraying allies and befriending enemies, and his embrace of the Muslim Brotherhood. Obama will be defeated, by his own words and deeds. I am confident that a pet rock, wraped in the Constituiton, could beat this traitor. I have faith that Americans will not allow this marxist statist liar to fundamentally change this country. If I am wrong, then America will cease to exist as we know it. If Obamao wins, game over, it was a nice run. I just don't see that happening. Americans will not continue to let Obama vacation while they suffer. I believe there are more Patriots than Traitors.

Clearly the Republican party learned absolutely nothing from the John McCain fiasco because they are doing the same exact thing again. NO, Romney cannot win because Romney is a rich, white, plastic politician with no personality or passion what so ever. He can't even inspire his "base" with anything other than "well, he's better than the other guy." Newsflash people, Independents aren't even remotely convinced of that and you can't win an election in this country without the Independent vote. There is only 1 candidate that is out there inspiring independent voters and that's Ron Paul. Turn off your televisions, get online, and see for yourself. You don't want to hear that because you're so focused on "I'm going to do the same thing over again, but it's going to work this time, really." Isn't that the textbook definition of insanity?

If Ron Paul had gotten off the World Enemy America Train he might have had a real chance. He is a stupid politician, flattering himself endlessly, as one adhering to "Principal" whether politically viable or not.I would have loved to hear him raise the issue of our over-extended world wide forces as a question of something to be examined in particular and detail.Instead he has asked us to become a caricature of an ostrich and that is not who we are or who we can afford to be.Our military should be ready and able to kick the snot out of our enemies and return home. And we should certainly not be building up repressive pre-tyrannical, anti-Christian nations anywhere.

"Can Mitt Romney Win?"Probably not.wjm, the reasons women are advancing educationally and on corporate ladders has MUCH more to do with the War of Boys in our schools and "Affirmative Action" than the notion that they are getting smarter. They are not. Nor are men - but men, as a group, are not as easily fooled by a "tall, dark, and handsome" candidate, especially when that guy presided over a four-year "Mancession."As for the military - you're mostly correct: military members and veterans trend Republican (except when Democrats like Al Gore don't get their ballots thrown out). But the percentage of the population that has ever worn a uniform is far too small to sway this election.A big part of the problem is that half of eligible voters pay no taxes, so a candidate that talks about lowering marginal rates for the people who DO pay taxes may mean less money for them in the short run. Since only "the rich" pay taxes anyway, our system of "progressive taxation" pits parasites against producers, with parasites having more votes.Another part of the problem is that most Americans have no clue how dependent political liberty is on economic and personal liberty. The MSM certainly isn't go to tell them, either. And most people aren't paying attention anyway - they see no connection between socialist policies in Washington and their immediate concerns, which typically involve vampire stories, singing competitions, and burly men in tights playing with a leather ball. There may be more patriots than traitors, but there are more idiots than either.Of course the fact that the Republicans nominated yet another rich, white, moderate/liberal won't help either. In for a penny - in for a pound. If you want liberal policies, you might as well vote for the guy who's most liberal. If you want conservative policies, you have to move to Eastern Europe: where they've learned where this road leads.

And the other question is - If Romney does win, will it matter? Obama has trashed the country, and if he wins a second term, all bets are off and we are in for some real trouble. But if Romney wins, will it make a significant difference? He is unlikely to make any real changes and we will just be rolling more slowly towards the edge of the cliff. Obama's policies will mostly still be in effect. Our military will continue to be weakened. Our economy will continue to slide under the load of regulations and taxes. The media will have a grand time blaming Romney and the RINO's for every bad thing that happens. And at the end of Romney's first term the clueless multitude of fools will be ready to re-elect Obama or some other Democrat who will then proceed to complete the destruction of our country by doubling down on all the failed policies of the Left.Unless we elect a real Constitutional Conservative who will fight to restore our proper government, then we face a bleak future. But the clueless are very unlikely to elect such an "extreme" person. Our "leaders" are a reflection of who we are as a people. Looking in the mirror now isn't a very pleasant prospect.

The question of Romney winning or not is YET TO BE DETERMINED.Fatalism will not help us.Dreaming he's bound to win won't help us.We need to know that Hitler's battering down the door and that we're all Jews here.We need to know that we share exactly, precisely the same existential threat that Israel faces.

First, Obama is bad enough for Romney to win, and he probably will. (Any of the three main Republican candidates if nominated would beat Obama.) Now, to oust Obama, conservatives must support Romney - even if they are not enthused to do so. The conservative talking heads (the chattering class?) figured this out early in the process, but must have also decided Romney was the only Republican candidate who could win. They became part of the disasterously mean spirited Republican primary, and in the process they have lessoned the chances of a Republican victory over Obama. In 2008 and 2012 the Republican Primaries have resutled in the most moderate candidate winning the prize, even though not favored by most Republican voters. That is not a good outcome for the party, but this year it seems to be the outcome desired by the "conservative" talking heads ("chattering class? Republican "establishment"?) who seem to have a snooty distrust of the rank and file of the party, or perhaps just the ones who place greater importance on the conservative social issues. Either way, that is a bad sign for a party that has proven again and again that it must bind together all factions of the party in order to win. There will be a reckoning on this apparent divide in the party even if Romney wins.

Mac, I believe that ArmyOfficer (Ret.) and John Work said it better than I. And, everything I hear from the women (especially single) indicate they're in love with the socialist, agenda aside. While there are many smart women out there, there's enough dodos to cancel their votes. One of my primary concerns are my rights as guaranteed by the Constitution. I hear virtually nothing from Romney about rights, for women or men. Women are the most gullible when it comes to reproductive rights and class warfare. Remember his many single mothers there are in America (at least half?), and they will swallow the "disappearing middle class" rhetoric from their fantasy man Obama. Sorry, Mac, but you haven't convinced me.We Americans should be thinking about what our response is going to be to living under a socialist dictatorship.

Tex Horn, ArmyOfficer (Ret.) and John Work said it, Romney is not the the one. He is another McCain, Bush, Dole, Ford, etc. We all know how they turned out. All but Bush the Younger lost. All Bush did was slow down the train wreck by a small amount. Romney is not the one to reverse things.

All you neysayers, buck up! Obamao will lose, he is worse than Carter. I don't care how bad Romney is, Obama is the worst anti American to ever occupy the oval office. Just keep pounding away with his epic failure, and he is one and done. It is imperative to take Congress, both houses, and Romney will do the bidding to roll back the Marxist Statist attempt to change this country. Hope and Change was really Rope and Chains, time to get rid of the progressive ties.

Come on! What do you mean, can he win? Of course he can. His target is O-blah-blah teleprompt, ObaMao revolutionist, O-bamination of the left, O-Russian Agent with the Russian president as his handler, and o-for crying out loud communist dictator stealing our freedoms. Mitt needs to his the president on all his communist policies and quit saying the Obama is a good guy with bad policies. Obama is a committed communist with an evil end game for America that puts murderous communists at our head. Every modern country gone completely communist has had about 1/4 of their citizenry, mostly men, just taken out in the fields and shot. This is where Obama is leading us and this needs to be articulated to Americans.
