The Right Opinion
So Many Dunces, So Few Dunce Caps
Whoever said that youth is wasted on the young was mistaken. After all, it generally takes maturity before one is in a position to fully realize that there is more to life than sex, drugs, booze and really rotten music.
What is truly wasted on youth is the vote. Well, that and their parents' money.
All you have to do is look at the mob of youngsters attracted to such things as Ron Paul's campaign, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and the Hope & Change election of Barack Obama, to realize that it makes more sense to trust these young louts around heavy machinery than it is anywhere in the political arena.
If you doubt me, just watch how these young wretches react whenever Obama promises them a freebie, be it free medical insurance or lower tuitions, to realize that the only significant difference between them and actual prostitutes is that the latter hold out for cash on the barrelhead.
The huge gap between the young and their elders can be seen in the way they respond to Obamian rhetoric. For instance, generations of Americans understood that the American Dream translated to people of different races and religions having an equal opportunity to achieve everything and anything they were willing to work for, no matter what was required of them in terms of study, honest effort and perseverance.
But we now have Obama giving a speech in which he refers to the American Promise. Who the heck is he to promise results? Who is he to tell anyone they will be successful, even if they're as dumb as doornails and as lazy as mules? Since when is success in America a guaranteed entitlement? We used to speak about equal playing fields, but only a socialist would dare promise equal results, and only a bunch of young slackers would applaud him.
There are exceptions to the rule. They are mainly to be found in the U.S. military. They understand the meaning of such words as patriotism, sacrifice and responsibility, unlike their civilian cousins who can't even spell those words.
In case you think I'm exaggerating, I guess you must be unaware that, according to a recent poll, half the high school students in America can't identify George Washington. In a related video that's gone viral on the Internet, one high school student in the state of Washington stumped a bunch of his cohorts asking them to name the capital of their state. They mainly guessed Seattle; the right answer is Olympia.
When he asked them to name the current vice-president, he got an assortment of interesting answers, including George Bush, Bill Clinton and a fellow named bin Laden.
When the students were asked in which war the United States gained its independence, the Civil War and the Korean War were both mentioned. Asked to identify the countries with which we shared borders, a few managed to come up with the right answer, but others mentioned South America and one young scholar replied, "There were too many to mention." When asked how many stars appear on our flag, most guessed 51. A few said 50, but a few others thought it might be 52.
Finally, when challenged to name a country whose name began with a "U," most were stumped, while one student took a stab with "Europe." But at least some of them had the good grace to be embarrassed when the pollster mentioned the United States.
In spite of such unfortunate findings, you may have noticed that the teachers unions keep demanding higher salaries and bigger pensions for their members. Frankly, in a more just world, we tax payers would demand a refund, along with their teaching credentials.
But, of course, that wouldn't be in keeping with Obama's American Promise.

As disgusting as the ignorance of today's youth is, not to mentions astonishing and scary, one has to wonder how much better the students of fifty years ago would have fared. Stupid people come in all shapes and backgrounds and stupidity isn't a modern invention but has been around forever. Too bad there weren't similar pollsters around back in the 50s and 60s to which we could compare today's dummies. It would be even better to have a baseline maybe from a hundred years ago. Schools back then were seriously strict and a high school diploma was a meaningful accomplishment, especially from a private school. But one can't escape assuming that there has been a whole lot of dumbing down in the last several decades as the intelligence level of teachers has diminished and their academic prowess has diminished even more. A poll should be done to measure the ignorance or knowledge of today's teachers.

Burt - If you were to have a brain surgeon analyze a sample of tissue form the brain of today's youth you would probably find that it is 70% hops and barley, and 30% Bong water residue. But seriously the underlying problem is that the government has its fat fingers in the education system. That way they can dumb down the students and make them all good servants of the State. Woodrow Wilson st6ated that there needed to be two classes of education in the U.S. , one was to train the elite to rule, and the other was to train everyone else to be a good servant of the state and it was all based on the Prussian education system of the late 1800's.
@Adrian - I went to school 50 years ago and I could name who the Father of Our Country is when I was in 2nd grade. We were taught better history and civics than the crap they teach now. What is taught now is PC certified government liberal revisionist BULL SHT. PC came about under Clinton, and the Government first got its sht hooks into the education system back in the Carter era if I'm not mistaken. Tell me, what is the worst system of governance to ever be attempted and why it is so popular with the youth? Answer - SOCIALISM and the reason why its so popular with the youth is that they learn they don't have to do anything for a government handout. They just don't realise that they are slaves of the state. Me, I'm a free born citizen of the greatest country in the world, a country that was founded by geniuses and is being run by Idiots.

Son of liberty...you are spot on! I believe that the major cause, actually THE reason our country has gone downhill so drastically over the last 40-50 years is the federal government's hand in education. They are turning our people into "useful idiots", brainwashed into believing the government is the the solution to all their problems! I went to a small country school in the 60s, and I am certain that what we had learned by the time we graduated 8th grade was more than most people learn through college---particularly this majoring in education, or "liberal arts" degrees! I pray we are not past the point of no return....and that God has not decided we are no longer worthy of His grace.

Not the government, but marxist statist control of Education and Media. Lenin prophecized correctly the useful idiots would eventually embrace marxsism. Those who now controll the Democrat Party are domestic enemies of the state, and are traitors to America. If they are not voted out, they will destroy the country.

Much of what you and other posters say is, unfortunately, true. Sadly, I believe that it is OUR generation (I am mid 60's) that has failed our young people. As a parent, I was involved in my daughter's education, at home, as well as in her schools. I was always appalled at the lack of involvement, by grownups, in their childrens lives, education, and in the local schools. It is this lack of involvement and abdication of parental duties, and the unbridled liberal education agenda, that have led to the "dumbing down" of our students. When teachers and parents fail their children, their children WILL fail.........

@ Mac: FYI, the Dept of Ed isn't even that old. It was started in 1979 under Carter, not 1965. Still, I agree it's been a downhill slide since then and it appears to have accomplished nothing positive during its existence.
@ Burt: I am not from the youth class that is the subject of your piece, but it troubles me that you would take a swipe at young supporters of Ron Paul. Ron is not perfect, and I'd be the first to admit that some of his foreign policy positions are unrealistic. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to me that there are young people who are independent and of strong enough mind to reject the big government mantra that society tries to stuff into their heads and latch on to Paul's small government/personal responsibility message. Given the idealism of youth, Ron Paul is exactly the kind of politician I'd expect young people who value small government and personal liberty to support. With the wisdom that comes with age they will hopefully grow to recognize that some of Paul's positions are just too idealistic to be practical, but better that they start from this perspective than one that looks to big government to solve all our ills.

i wonder how big a factor the quality of our educational system (meaning the liberal, moronic teachers) plays in all the ills of this country. my guess is it is the main cause of the problems. and fixing the problem is not going to be easy. seems to me the only way to correct it is to start qualifying teachers. make them pass a competency test, regularly. if they fail, they are shown the door. may sound harsh, but the consequences are clearly visible. and we are talking about the education of our children, here. like a computer, garbage in, garbage out. if we continue to ignore the root cause, and allow the teachers to inculcate our children with their liberal nonsense, the country will putrify and rot from within (it's already occuring).

What about parents? My daughters learn this from me as I would not leave many true life lessons to school teachers. Sunday school and meaningful discussions/conversations at home are what develops Patriots. Leave the 3 R's to our education system.

TexHorn, you took the words right out of my mouth. It's scary to know these kids will be the future of this country. Most people of our generation knew more in the 6th grade than these kids know when they graduate.
When education is government subsidised there is no incentive for the teachers to work harder - they know they'll get a paycheck regardless of their efforts. The payback for taking government money is the plethora of reports they must fill out. By the time they finish all those stupid reports, they're too tired to put forth any real teaching efforts.
Look at the courses that have fallen by the wayside: phonics, typing and civics, just to name a few. It's no wonder these kids are ignorant and can't spell.

C'mon fellas, why all the "blaming" of others for the outcome of our own children.Personal responsibility is the patient, too much gov't is the disease, more freedom the answer, death to life as our founders envisioned is the only alternative. My question is"if it ain't like it was when you went to school back in the day (me included).what are you doing to change it?"Too many people complain and go along, unwilling to make the sacrafices needed to send their kids to privale schools where the doctrine is parent controlled and/or homeschool where the enviornment is controlled as well.Enough people take their kids out of the system then you'll see some change-until then-tilting at windmills-just my and my 4 kids.02

Today's Chronicle and the speech that never was by Neil Boortz basically says it all. The voting age ought to be raised, with the exception of those in the military.

John Taylor Gatto has spent a lifetime researching education and why the American education system is in the state it's in; here's a great article condensing his views: http://www.lifelearningmagazine.com/1004/thehallofmirrorsbyjohntaylor_gatto.htm If you haven't seen any of this before it'll blow your mind.

@Merrry Colin - I agree. Neil's piece is spot on - and funny!
I agree with raising the voting age, except that it couldn't be raised high enough to weed out some of the imbeciles that the educational system has produced in the last several years. I blame the colleges. They have advertised for, and admitted, anyone, including those who couldn't pour you-know-what out of a you-know-what if they were upside down. Everyone shouldn't go to college. Admitting anyone and everyone lowers the standards, resulting in the dumbing down of all.
I've said it here before. When I was in school, everyone who graduated could read and write. This included the so called "retarded" kids, bless them. Now we are graduating kids from college who aren't that smart.

Merry Colin - you have it correct on the voting age. The 26th Amendment ranks right up there with the 16th and 17th Amendments in destroying our Republic. Then there are the 23, 24 and 25 Amendments which also are causing our downfall. And if anyone thinks there is much difference between the D's and the R's, they all pushed for them. But there is some hope, maybe some people will actually read the Constitution to find out what I am upset about.
Dave - you got it correct on Ron Paul, he is the only candidate for President that actually believes in and follows the Constitution.
