The Right Opinion
Obama's Rhetoric
Barack Obama's great rhetorical gifts include the ability to make the absurd sound not only plausible, but inspiring and profound.
His latest verbal triumph was to say on July 13th, "if you've been successful, you didn't get there on your own." As an example, "Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."
Let's stop and think, even though the whole purpose of much political rhetoric is to keep us from thinking, and stir our emotions instead.
Even if we were to assume, just for the sake of argument, that 90 percent of what a successful person has achieved was due to the government, what follows from that? That politicians will make better decisions than individual citizens, that politicians will spend the wealth of the country better than those who created it? That doesn't follow logically -- and certainly not empirically.
Does anyone doubt that most people owe a lot to the parents who raised them? But what follows from that? That they should never become adults who make their own decisions?
The whole point of the collectivist mindset is to concentrate power in the hands of the collectivists -- which is to say, to take away our freedom. They do this in stages, starting with some group that others envy or resent -- Jews in Nazi Germany, capitalists in the Soviet Union, foreign investors in Third World countries that confiscate their investments and call this theft "nationalization."
Freedom is seldom destroyed all at once. More often it is eroded, bit by bit, until it is gone. This can happen so gradually that there is no sudden change that would alert people to the danger. By the time everybody realizes what has happened, it can be too late, because their freedom is gone.
All the high-flown talk about how people who are successful in business should "give back" to the community that created the things that facilitated their success is, again, something that sounds plausible to people who do not stop and think through what is being said. After years of dumbed-down education, that apparently includes a lot of people.
Take Obama's example of the business that benefits from being able to ship their products on roads that the government built. How does that create a need to "give back"?
Did the taxpayers, including business taxpayers, not pay for that road when it was built? Why should they have to pay for it twice?
What about the workers that businesses hire, whose education is usually created in government-financed schools? The government doesn't have any wealth of its own, except what it takes from taxpayers, whether individuals or businesses. They have already paid for that education. It is not a gift that they have to "give back" by letting politicians take more of their money and freedom.
When businesses hire highly educated people, such as chemists or engineers, competition in the labor market forces them to pay higher salaries for people with longer years of valuable education. That education is not a government gift to the employers. It is paid for while it is being created in schools and universities, and it is paid for in higher salaries when highly educated people are hired.
One of the tricks of professional magicians is to distract the audience's attention from what they are doing while they are creating an illusion of magic. Pious talk about "giving back" distracts our attention from the cold fact that politicians are taking away more and more of our money and our freedom.
Even the envy that politicians stir up against "the rich" is highly focussed on those particular high income-earners whose decisions the politicians want to take over. Others in sports or entertainment can make far more money than the highest paid corporate executive, but there is no way that politicians can take over the roles of Roger Federer or Oprah Winfrey, so highly paid sports stars or entertainers are never accused of "greed."
If we are so easily distracted by self-serving political rhetoric, we are not only going to see our money, but our freedom, increasingly taken away from us by slick-talking politicians, including our current slick-talker-in-chief in the White House.

Volunteer at a call center, put up yard signs, tell everyone you know that a vote for a Democrat is a vote for the ideology of Marx, put signs on your car, there are any number of things. If we fail at the ballot box, if you haven't already, go out and get a good rifle and a pistol. Take a hunter safety course and go to a range for instruction and become proficient with your firearms so you can handle them blindfolded. Get a thousand rounds of ammo of every calibur you own. If the ballot box fails, you will be prepared.

Got the stickers on the car (I get a lot of dirty looks at work - majority black/liberal work place). I'm a Vietnam combat vet - know how to use the weapons I have. Need more ammunition though.

Better yet get a good reloading press, cases, powder, primers and bullets. You will then be able to have ammunition should Barry order Holder to have the Jack Booted Thugs (ATF) close the local gun stores. It will also give you something to do in the evenings. Your children can also learn a skill that will enable them to survive. My daughter at five was already loading and at 14 was competing in high power rifle. BTW, she is not a Neanderthal as she is a DVM. For those who went to govmint skools that is a Vet, animal doctor.

It will be hard considering liberals believe in this utopia that Democrats has presented in our schools. Not teaching them the truth about our history. This is why I wrote my book "Why I Am an Independent Conservative" where I put charts and go through the history that they distorted. Without knowing the truth you don't see the down fall coming. I tried to show the progression. I am trying to get it out there to help people to understand and educate others. After WW II we brought Nazi scientist and medical "professionals" here in America. They have been indoctrinating our children for years. Galileo said, "All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them."

Right on Dr Sowell. You should write speeches for Mitt.

Dr. Sowell puts it brilliantly. Obama's only gift is oratory, he's in very select company there - Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, Josef Stalin, Ho Chi Minh, in fact just about every despot has the gift of oratory in the 20th century. It's looking like the 21st Century isn't going to be any better. Time to get ready for Civil War part deux. Liberty or death!

Forget the business owners; apply this concept to every homeowner in the country. "If you've got a (home) -- you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." And they used public roads to bring the materials to the site. They used public-educated labor. Therefore, every homeowner should pay more in taxes.
Now, apply te same to everyone who owns a vehicle. Cute, huh?
What about truck owner-operators? Hell, their businesses are BASED upon use of the national highway system. They should "give back" a LOT more.

I think It was very nice of the government to give Bruce Springsteen a guitar and the E Street Band. The government was also very considerate in giving George Clooney all of those acting roles. No wonder these two are such big supporters!

An absolutely brilliant piece Dr. Sowell. Sadly there will be too few who will read it, and even fewer who will accept the truths therein. We simply have too many who get their info from 30 second sound bites from the MSM. Also sadly, is the fact that 30 second sound bites are all most of their brains can accomodate.

The rhetoric goes on with Barry's new television campaign slandering Romney. I firmly believe Obama and the Left subscribe to Hitler's belief that to continually repeat a distortion of the truth (a lie) makes it plausible in the public mind. I think it's going to backfire as he's demonstrating loud and clear that he can't compete due to his past performance. Come on November!!

Dr. Sowell: I hear the echo of Ronald Reagan here: "People have governments, governments don't have people." Right on.
But more must be done. If it's a war between collectivism and individualism, it will be close-run. Why not take the second card and turn it? Whose vision of the collective would win? Obama's or that written in the Constitution? Obama has opened himself up for a second punch (you know Romney drew blood from the whining in Obama's camp).
I'm glad he's decided to run his own campaign! Humpty-Bonaparte will have a messy spill to clean up all by himself. And he'll say: "I didn't make this mess!" What a baby.
I'm excited. If this were a boxing match a wound has been opened above Obama's eye. That will leave his midsection open till November.
