Romney's 'Secret Video' and the Dem Politics of 'Squirrel!'
Democrats need to change their party mascot from the donkey to the squirrel. They divert the media's and the electorate's short attention spans with fleeting, fuzzy objects -- like the main canine character in the animated Pixar movie "Up," who was easily distracted from his main thoughts and serious duties by every last little moving trifle.
Embassy attacks? Quick, find a squirrel! Warnings ignored? Squirrel! American troops killed by long-plotting jihadis exploiting security weaknesses? Squirrel! First Amendment sabotage by White House officials in the name of political correctness? Squirrel! Chronic joblessness, high gas prices, exploding dependency? Squirrel! Squirrel! Squirrel!
As Election Day draws nearer, the Obama campaign and its surrogates in the Fourth Estate have infested the political arena with an army of tactical and rhetorical rodentia. One week, it's GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney's high school hijinks. The next, it's a heinous smear about Romney killing a steelworker's cancer-stricken wife.
Or, it's a hit job on multiple sclerosis survivor Ann Romney's therapeutic horse. Then, it's faux rage over Romney's firm statement condemning the feckless White House response to the murders of our U.S. Ambassador to Libya and three other Americans in Benghazi.
This week, it's a "secret Romney video" shot undercover at a closed-door dinner with Florida donors in May. Unemployed Democratic operative James Carter IV (grandson of former president and malaise engineer Jimmy Carter) brokered the film to progressive Mother Jones magazine.
Now, the same media lapdogs who had conniption fits when the late Andrew Breitbart and conservative investigative journalist James O'Keefe used undercover video are tripping over themselves to publish glowing profiles of Carter the Fourth and his impressive "furtive efforts" to secure the Romney tapes.
Carter the Fourth found the cameraman on Twitter, invoked his family name and convinced the mole to leak the tape to Mother Jones' David Corn. To quote Joe Biden with all due sarcasm: BFD.
But back to the bigger Big, Fluffy Distraction at hand: Let's reflect for a moment on the Beltway hoo-hah over one small snippet from Romney's nearly hour-long talk. Here's the quote that has liberal finger-waggers and Republican wet-finger-in-the-wind windbags in meltdown mode:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," Romney explained to an audience member who asked how the candidate was going to change the "we'll take care of you" mentality of Obama voters. "All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. ... And they will vote for this president no matter what."
Romney explained that this portion of voters was comprised of "people who pay no income tax. ... I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
He's talking, of course, about the Peggy the Moochers and Henrietta Hugheses of the world: savior-based Obama supporters for whom the cult of personality trumps all else. He's talking about the Sandra Flukes and Julias of the world: Nanny State grievance-mongers who have been spoon-fed identity politics and victim Olympics from preschool through grad school and beyond. And he's talking about the encrusted entitlement clientele who range from the Section 8 housing mob in Atlanta who caused a near-riot to the irresponsible, debt-ridden homeowners who mortgaged themselves into oblivion and want their bailout now, now, now.
Media wonks sliced and diced the words like hibachi chefs on bath salts. Beltway conservative scribes David Brooks and Bill Kristol denounced Romney as insensitive and out of touch. But Romney told hard political truths, which he's proclaimed openly on the campaign trail before. "If you're looking for free stuff you don't have to pay for, vote for the other guy," he told a heckler in March. "That's what he's all about, OK? That's not, that's not what I'm about."
Gasp! He said he's against freeloaders. Oh, the inhumanity.
In another section of the video that libs don't want to talk about, Romney received his biggest applause when he defended his success and mentioned what Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio's Cuban immigrant parents taught him. "When he grew up here poor, they looked at people who had a lot of wealth. His parents never once said, 'We need some of what they have. They should give us some.' Instead, they said, 'If we work hard and go to school, someday we might be able to have that.'"
Let the parsers and panicky pundits chase their tails and hurl their nuts. This election is about America's makers versus America's takers. Romney should never, ever apologize for making that clear.

this is why politics are destined to be disgusting and for those that wish to add to a system that as long as mankind has a say will fail. both in love and truth. I do not see how democrats are responsible for the words of Romney or even their timing. That seems like a dishonest and biased stance.
However yes of course Democrats would want to distract from issues that could be used against them. Surprising?
Does this make what Romney said better? People who he alluded to are defending him! He calls them lazy Obama voters and they say "yay"?
There is no truth in politics because both sides ignore truth and just attack each other. This comment could go on forever. Liberals have indeed got some of his comments wrong and republicans jump in the mire to defend him.
When Satan offered Jesus all the governments of the world Jesus never argued they were not his to give. Either way I know people will not be stopped this ongoing foolishness of politics until they are forced to. However anyone themselves can stand for truth and stop supporting people that only seek to serve themselves.
Mitt Romney is on camera saying he stands for anything that will get him voted, that is a fact. Obama assassinates US citizens without a trial. There are many many many other things about both of them that should make anyone smart and sincere to call them into question. "Be no part of the world" Jesus said. Do you really wish to continue to close your eyes to truths and follow mankind which "...cannot even direct his step"? Psalms.

Romney and Ryan need to go on the attack concerning Obama's record. There is plenty of fodder there and they have to go on the offensive rather than play Obama's game. Make Obama defend his BS record.

Romney said 47% of the people are steadfast supporters of Obama and probably can't be persuaded to vote Republican. So What? That's exactly what political polls say! Then the Obama-tyrant has the unmitigated gall to say a president should represent all the people. What a joke! He doesn't represent me! I stand with American values: individual liberty, and LIMITED government -- for example, one that protects my right to money I've earned instead of trying to steal from me. I believe redistribution of wealth (i.e., government stealing) weakens us by creating permanent government slaves. I respect the Constitution as something that should be honored instead of worked around or ignored. I believe America is a defender of liberty, so we need not apologize to any nation and especially not those that allow street thugs to attack us. I believe Americans can unleash amazing economic growth once freed from the oppression of an army of unelected masterminds in various bureaucratic tyrannies. I applaud and champion American business (yes, we did build that!) instead of denigrating it. I reject the notion that profligate borrowing and spending can do anything but harm America, and I reject the notion that weakening America’s power abroad somehow makes the world safer. We are going through times I never thought I would see. I wake up at night, sick about what this so-called leader has done to my beloved country. Mr. Romney may have flaws, and I don’t doubt conservatives and libertarians will have to work to keep him true to our beliefs. But no candidate is perfect. One thing I know for certain: If the America of the Declaration and Constitution is to have a chance of survival – OBAMA MUST GO!

@Delstrom. Excellent statement! I am convinced that if Obama is defeated we are going to have rioting in the streets. The "you owe me crowd" will never give up their freebies willingly. This country can no longer sustain itself by having 53% of the people supporting the other 47%. Its time for the lazy, incompetent, idiots to realize that we don't owe them a living. They need to get off their lazy asses and make it own their own the same we all have. However, I don't hold out any hope that it will happen.

@doug in durham,nc -- There's no point in debating a Quisling troll. So I will simply say I stand against any statist pushing to "fundamentally transform America" into some quasi-slave-state where what used to be free citizens are now sub-human cogs in some central planner's grand design. There's no dignity in such an existence. Obama is especially disgusting because he is an egotistical, meglomaniacal, America-hater with a head full of Marxist and Fascistic notions. If he was any other color, his beliefs would still be repulsive.

If he wasn't black he would never have secured a nomination, let alone the presidency.
"The Constitution is fundamentally flawed in that it tells government... what it can't do to you. It doesn't say what government must do for you. -Barack Obama.
"The Warren Court was pretty good at creating political equality but not as good at creating economic equality because the Court, unfortunately, [!!!] isn't the best way to massively redistribute wealth. -Barack Obama
That's why we're opposed to a president who clearly believes that property is theft.

And can you really not fathom that intelligent people could possibly have a different opinion that is not based on an irrational bias like racism? Frankly, I don't care what color he is; it's the fact that he's demonstrably incompetent, and apparently opposed to the values that made this country great: hard work, self-reliance, and personal responsibility.
I can think of any number of prominent black conservatives to whom I would have gladly given my vote, were they the Republican candidate for president this year, Condoleeza Rice and Herman Cain being the two for whom nomination was most possible. But if Larry Elder, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, J.C. Watts, or Allen West (among others) were to have been running, I would have voted for any of them instead of opposite obama, or over most white Democrats for that matter. All of these are imperfect candidates, but I've seen very few candidates in any election who were perfect. I think most Republicans would agree with me, and it takes a lot of hubris or simple denial for you to insist that we are all racists, despite the evidence and our declarations that we are not.
I'm sure you pride yourself on your keen intellect, and believe you support the liberal position because you have carefully thought it through. But you need to ask yourself whether your OWN self-evident biases against your fellow citizens are blinding YOU to other possibilities.
