The Right Opinion
It’s Debatable
WASHINGTON -- The spectacles we persist in dignifying as presidential "debates" -- two-minute regurgitations of rehearsed responses -- often subtract from the nation's understanding. But beginning this Wednesday, these less-than-Lincoln-Douglas episodes might be edifying if the candidates can be inveigled into plowing fresh ground.
Concerning the Judiciary
Although the average age of the Supreme Court justices (66) is less than that of the Rolling Stones (68), three justices will be in their 80s before the next presidential term ends, so the next president probably can solidify today's conservative majority or create a liberal majority.
For Mitt Romney: Many conservatives advocate "judicial restraint." They denounce "judicial activism" and define it as not properly deferring to decisions by government's majoritarian branches. Other conservatives praise "judicial engagement" and define it as actively defending liberty against overbearing majorities. Do you favor "restraint" or "engagement"? Do you reject the Kelo decision, in which the Supreme Court deferred to governments’ desire to seize private property and give it to wealthier private interests who would pay higher taxes?
For Barack Obama: You deplore the court's Citizens United decision. What is your constitutional basis for rejecting the decision's principle that Americans do not forfeit their First Amendment rights when they come together in corporate entities (mostly nonprofit advocacy corporations such as the Sierra Club) to speak collectively? You say you would “seriously consider" amending the First Amendment to empower Congress to regulate political speech. Explain why you choose to make the Bill of Rights less protective.
For Romney: The Republican platform endorses using "whatever legislative method is most feasible" to ban flag desecration. Can you distinguish this from the anti-blasphemy laws in some Islamic countries? Should we criminalize expressive acts that offend?
Concerning Foreign Policy
For both: On Oct. 7, we begin the 12th year of the war in Afghanistan and 51 recent NATO fatalities have been at the hands of our supposed Afghan allies, causing U.S. commanders to indefinitely suspend many joint operations. Why are we staying there 27 more months?
For Romney: You envision "countervailing duties" to punish China for manipulating the value of its currency. Do the "quantitative easings" by Ben Bernanke's Federal Reserve, which vastly expanded the money supply, constitute currency manipulation? Would duties increasing the prices Americans pay for Chinese imports violate your vow to not raise taxes?
For Obama: Your campaign boasts about increasing the number of unfair-trade charges against China. How would Americans' welfare be enhanced by raising the prices they pay for consumer goods and production materials from China?
For both: You are correct that China subsidizes politically connected businesses. Does not our Export-Import Bank do this?
For Obama: Are GM and Chrysler subsidized? Are they politically connected businesses?
Concerning Domestic Policy
For Obama: Your opponent proposes cutting income tax rates 20 percent and implies paying for this partly by means testing some deductions (e.g., mortgage interest payments and charitable giving). Do you oppose his plan for making the income tax more progressive?
For Romney: You say "redistribution" has "never been a characteristic of America." You're kidding, right? Is not redistribution one purpose of progressive taxation? Is not most of what government does -- from agriculture subsidies to subsidized student loans to entitlements -- the redistribution of wealth from one cohort or region to another?
For Obama: You recently said changing Washington "from the outside" is "how some of our biggest accomplishments like health care got done -- mobilizing the American people." You're kidding, right? A majority of the American people never supported passage of Obamacare. Did you not secure passage by deals with Big Pharma and other inside Washington players?
For both: Do you agree that a financial institution that is too big to fail is too big to exist? If not, why not? The biggest banks emerged from the Great Recession bigger. At the end of 2011, the five biggest (JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs) held more than $8.5 trillion in assets, which is 56 percent of the 2011 GDP. Why should they not be broken up?
For Obama: Your deep blue Illinois -- like another essentially one-party Democratic state, California -- is buckling under the weight of its portion of the estimated $2.5 trillion in unfunded state pension obligations. Will you promise to oppose attempts to force the taxpayers to bail out badly governed states?
For both: Do you assume the Almighty is not paying attention whenever you say "I approve this message"?

Any and all, constitutional questions fired at O'man are terrific. I love to watch that worm, squirm under pressure. The Bill of Rights has been in jeopardy, during the progressive reign of terror, in America-2008-2012!

Romney needs to step up big here. For the most part he has been able to hit on many major topics but we all know that he media will either spin it or just not even mention it. Romney will come out strong but I think if he really shows more emotion along the lines of outrage to what Obama has done to America, people will see that and media cannot spin that enough to cover it up.
I know that most of my Guard unit is sick of seeing this man destorying our freedoms and way of life. 97% of my Guard unit will be voting for Romney.

Airman, I guess you are saying 3% of your guard unit are plain stupid idiots. Why don't the other 97% educate those who would endorse the incompetence and marxism of Oblama

Anton, That 3% falls into stupid. You cannot fix stupid. The same with my Guard unit, albeit Army. There is a small number that believes the lamstream media hook line and sinker. I can say the same for a former co-worker. I debunked everything he said about, the budget, odumma care, heck he even stated Georgia had not modified their Constitution since the 1960. He could not understand nothing presented and went back to the stupid talking points. You cannot fix stupid with the truth.

Fair & meaningful questions would be nice, but I think we all know these so-called moderators will not ask Obama tough questions and they will try to trip up Romney, and most likely interrupt him a zillion times.

Romney has been on the defensive his entire campaign. Gaffes, flip flops, missed opportunities, bizarre rants with an empty chair at the convention, Ryan's false and silly claims are how many voters identify Romney and Ryan.
Good for you if you think or hope Romney was capable of doing better. If you think Romney is capable of hitting a few home runs in the debate, why is it he hasn't hit even one so far? Don't try to blame it on the media, most of Romney's mistakes are unforced.
I'll be happy to explain it to you. Romney is the best candidate the Republicans could find but he's particularly lousy at politics. The other reason is nasty, uncivil far right politics such as evidenced here.
This from Sunday Sept 30 2012 National Journal: "Romney is lagging behind Obama by 10 percentage points in the state (Ohio), partly because of a 25-point gender gap, according to the latest Quinnipiac/CBS News/New York Times poll. Without Ohio and its treasure trove of 18 electoral votes, Romney’s path to the White House is exceedingly narrow. Early voting starts on Tuesday."

I do not understand your sentence, "The other reason is nasty, uncivil far right politics such as evidenced here." "Here" is where? Please specify what makes politics "nasty". What is an example of "uncivil?" Who are you taking about who is "far right"? Just trying to understand what you are trying to say.

I am one who thinks that Romney has been playing his cards close to his chest for a reason. When put the message out 18 months before an election, things get forgotten by the electorate. Put the message out within 6 weeks of the election, and the electorate will remember most if not all of it. We will see if my thoughts are correct on Wednesday night.

Romney is not the best that the GOP could muster. The better ones were not suitable (read: could beat Obama) to those in power and were disposed of early (Cain, Santorum) or completely ignored (Paul).
So, if we think Obama has not been anything but bad for this country, we are "nasty" and "uncivil?" Guess we should take that as a compliment. Weren't this country's founders "nasty" and "uncivil" towards King George?

Today's "journalists" will report what Obastard meant to say - as they've been doing for the fool every time he's off-teleprompter - and rip into Romney with a progressively jaundiced eye.
The private sector has been overwhelmed with govt uncertainties (regulations/taxes/OdipshitCare/Dodd-Fwank/EPA) designed by an "Ogenda" that's truly harmful."
Enough said?

Delusional dems, rammed the PPACA2010 down our throats, and 2/3rds of America, does not want this stupid law. It drives up the cost of care and bankrupts us(a)! It is ambiguous in many areas, needing a team of lawyers to decipher the gobbledygook!! Health Care can stay right in the private sector, where competition and choice, keeps the cost low.Let us buy insurance across State lines, for more choices of HMO'S. Reform H.C., don't wreck it!!

Romney has to hit a home run in this first debate. He has to come out and put the hammer on the boy. If Romney tries to be Mr.Nice Guy, he's done. If he can't beat Obama on his record.....have a nice day!

I enjoy the reading the articles presented here, and up until recently I've enjoyed the comments that follow. I must say however, that "name-calling" our public servants & attacking other commenters, in my opinion, lowers the quality of the discourse on this website, and could potentially lower the credibility of the site as a whole. Please, respond to those of differing opinions with courteous and respectful words so that they may seriously consider our views, and hopefully we can eventually win them "over to our side". To do otherwise will most certainly cause them to discount our views. While I may not agree with Gregory's views of the current political environment, I do appreciate the fact that he appears to read the articles and then provides thoughtful comments on the subjects. This gives me the opportunity to hear "the other side of the story", allowing me to be able to consider their views and determine my own response, if I so choose. There are plenty of other websites I could visit if I wanted to read snide comments and responses. Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion on this public forum.

Gregory opines with the marxist statist lies and fantasy of the insane. He is not thoughtful or cogent on the issues, but has a warped and clueless view of the world, and would welcome the destruction of America at the hand of societal leaches. His arguements are without fact or merit. This other side of the story would destroy the country.

I have a question. If, as Gregory from Yakima says, (quoting The National Journal) Obama is 10 points ahead of Romney in Ohio, why is Obama still campaigning there?

I've run across quite a few people who stated that they voted for Obama the first time but were not going to vote for him this time. At the same time, I have not run across anyone who stated that they voted GOP the first time and will vote Obama this time. Between the Christians and the Tea Party folks, I'm betting that Obama is going down bigtime regardless of what the polls say at the moment.

I voted GOP the first time because of the following: 1. I prayed that McCain would survive so we wouldn't get his VP. She scared me with her talking points. Some, I agree are valid, but the comments like "I can see Russia from my house" made me wonder what all was going on in her head. 2. Obama came off during the run up to election day as an incredible salesman. Personally, I think he has enough carisma (sp) to stand on the sidewalk outside the NY diamond district and resale jewels to people who just bought them at 5 to 10 times the price...and they will pay him. I knew we didn't need that type of personality as our sitting President.
After living and enduring his last 4 years as our President, 2 things: 1. I was being nice in my assessment of him 4 years ago. 2. No way I will be voting for him again, and will do all I can to convince others to not vote for him either.
