An Open Letter to General Powell

By Ken Blackwell · Jan. 14, 2013

Dear General Powell,

I was disappointed with the clear implication in your Meet The Press interview that those of us, in the GOP who defend life, protect traditional marriage and advance religious liberty are intolerant.

It was obvious to anyone who watched the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, that NO! had it. There was no way the convention chairman could have heard a two-thirds vote for the YES! position. Three times the chairman asked them to vote. Three times they denied God. Denied Him Thrice!

What has happened to the Democratic Party that,in the 1960's, provided such leadership for the cause of Civil Rights? It was Democrats like John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey who supprted the fight for civil rights among the white majority in the1960s. Kennedy, the first Catholic president, was in good company in his church. Roman Catholic Bishops were among the first to strike out against segregation in the 1950s and 1960s. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was surely a Baptist preacher, but he could rely on thousands of Catholic priests and nuns to join his great March on Washington in 1963. And when he wrote his famous Letter from the Birmingham Jail, he cited St. Thomas Aquinas to make his case that an unjust law was no law at all.

For the Democratic Party of Kennedy and King to vote three times to reject God was a shock to millions of black Americans. And it must have been especially shocking to black clergymen who have been leaders in the struggle for equal rights and equal opportunity for four decades and more. It is bad enough these pastors and their congregations have been given short shrift by the new elites in the Democratic Party, but we now see that God was not put in the back of the bus. God was not allowed on the bus at all.

Only by an obvious power play did the convention chairman overrule the obvious sentiment on the floor. Anyone with ears to hear knew that the spirit of those delegates was against acknowledging God in the Democratic Platform. How far we have fallen from that great Inauguration Day in 1961 when John F. Kennedy said: “The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.” No one in America yelled NO! on that crisp, clear day in Washington.

What does it mean for a party to reject God? First of all, it means they must reject life itself. We know that God is the author of life. Speaker after speaker demanded abortion, and more of it.

No longer would Democrats have any hesitation about abortion. No longer would they say, as Bill Clinton said, it should be safe, legal, and rare. The Democratic Platform dropped those last two words, and rare. Even the usually liberal Cokie Roberts – an NPR reporter – thought the Charlotte convention lineup of pro-abortion speakers was “over the top.”

She pointed out that 30% of Democrats are pro-life. And who would those pro-life Democrats be? Disproportionately, they are black and Hispanic voters. And Catholic and Evangelical voters.

Why should black voters be against abortion? Planned Parenthood's founder, Margaret Sanger, made clear her own plans when she addressed the Ku Klux Klan of New Jersey in the 1920s. She wanted to have more children from the fit, fewer from the fit. When you read about her “Negro Ministers Project," you learn that Planned Parenthood has been targeting minorities for a long time. Today, in New York City, 61% of unborn children of black mothers are killed before birth. Planned Parenthood is there, pushing abortion all the way.

President Obama's health care takeover and his HHS Mandate against Catholic and other religious institutions will only increase the daily death toll. Religious freedom is trampled when you force Christians to participate in ending the lives of innocents. Even Herod didn't do that!

In 1866, historian Allen Guelzo reports, Tennessee recorded thousands more marriages than in the previous four years. That's because newly freed black couples were walking to Tennessee to have their marriages recognized by law. How tragic, then, that the Charlotte convention came out against marriage, too. They say they only want to add to the number of happily married couples by allowing men to marry men and women to marry women. But we know that wherever these counterfeit marriages have been recognized, true marriage declines. All over Northern Europe, when civil unions were enforced, true marriage ceased to be that special, God-ordained union is has always been. Just as counterfeit money drives out true money, same sex marriage drives out true marriage.

Some leading liberals know this. George Washington University Law Professor, Jonathan Turley, told an overflow crowd at the Newseum in 2008 that critics say "gay marriage will lead to polygamy.” He was wildly cheered by the educated, mostly white crowd when he said: “I'm for that!”

President Obama knows that the black community, and especially the black church, is not for that. In North Carolina – just three months before the Democratic Convention met in Charlotte – black voters providing the winning margin for a state referendum that affirmed true marriage. There was no stronger group of voters supporting marriage than black voters.

President Obama seemed reluctant to abandon this constituency that has so loyally supported him. Consider how much has changed and how fast. In 1996, the Defense of Marriage Act passed Congress by an overwhelming vote. It won 342 votes in the House and 85 votes in the Senate. It was so strong supported that this law would have been approved if there were no Republicans in either House of Congress. That's why President Bill Clinton felt he had no choice but to sign it.

President Obama has refused to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act and pledges to repeal it. He has openly joined the Marriage Enders. They're not changing marriage. They are ending it. If two men can marry, why not three? If gays and lesbians can marry, what about bi-sexual persons and persons who have sought to change their sex? Why can't they have one spouse of either sex?

After slavery, after Jim Crow, after the KKK, it is fair to say that among the worst things visited upon black Americans have been the targeting of our families by abortionists and the effort to end marriage.

That is why we are in a crisis. This is what happens when a major party rejects God.

Best Regards,                            Ken Blackwell

If you pay attention and study, the GOP has gone far to the right. Notice Ken Blackwell says the GOP defends Life. He means the unborn. He is not speaking of adults who fight in wars, the poor, the disadvantaged, etc. I guess he has not been paying attention the latest speaking of Pope Benedict.

We already have religious liberty. I pray and practice my Christian faith openly everyday. The GOP ignores the Catholic Church (except for abortion) only wants to discuss "social issues" while blaming the poor for the country's problems. Hey Ken, how about the wealth inequality in this country? What does the Pope say about that?????

I never hear about Ken Blackwell serving God. He sounds like he sold his soul for power and wealth, while ignoring his own church. He is a phony and hypocrite.

I also find Blackwell's comments about the Democratic Party "rejecting God "as highly offensive as probably do tens of millions of other Christian Democrats and Independents, like myself.

What does Ken Blackwell do to serve God??????

What do you propose "we" do about "wealth inequality"? Haven't you figured out yet that we are all "suffering" from ability inequality? So Mr. Christian In Name Only---what do YOU propose? Surely it isn't teaching a man to fish or those who will not work will not eat.

Maybe you ought to learn that the only equality recognized by our founders was that we should all enjoy equality under the law. Wealth equality? Only a dreamer/Marxist/utopian/Democrat/liberal/idiot would believe this was even possible. The Pope has an excuse for not understanding the American ideal of equality under the law; what is your excuse?

"... wealth inequality in this country?"

You seem to think the American economy is a zero sum game - a pie with a fixed number of slices. That if one person has two slices it leaves others with a smaller portion to fight over. News flash the economy, even as poor as it is right now, does not have a fixed number of slices. Anyone who works hard, has a better idea, builds a better mousetrap can earn more money without taking anything away from anyone else. The American economy is a pie of unlimited portions.

Not wanting to have any reference to God in the Party platform sure sounds like rejecting him to me. I guess it doesn't bother you for your tax dollars to go to pay for lazy ass parasites on welfare who don't work, never have, and probably never will. Does it ever occur to you liberals that the rest of us have children to take care of and shouldn't have to pay for someone else's mistake or just plain laziness. Try going in a school to pray or set up a Manger scene at any public place and then tell me we have religious liberty. The poor will always be with us because the Democrats like it that way. Give them enough free stuff, ie, subsidized housing, food stamps, money, Medicaid, and a free cell phone so they are better off than the folks working minimum wage. Keep them on the government dole and voting Democratic. Sounds like an ideal way to live to me. Liberalism is a sickness but there is no known treatment for it.

@ Steve in Cincy - Read this and take it to heart.

2 Timothy 4:3-4
3 "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."

Have you abandoned your faith to go with the apostates. If you are called to be with Christ, then you must act as He commands. Did Christ not also say "Whom so ever denies me, thus I will deny him before The Father."

I saw and heard the denial of God on my television back in September, they have embraced heresy and false teachings. Don't get mixed up about what the author is saying, he has it right.

Kathy Snyder in NC replied:

@ Steve, Its true that the Democrates booed God during the 2012 Democratic Convention down here in Charlotte. Here read this and you can also find more about this by researching it yourself.
The Democratic National Committee banned gift baskets from churches in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area, claiming the churches hold views on women's issues that run contrary to the Democratic platform, Todd Starnes reported at Fox News on Wednesday.
“They told us our views on women’s rights are contrary to the Democratic party platform,” David Benham, lead organizer of the Charlotte714 movement told Fox.
According to Starnes, the group consists of more than 100 churches in the area that gathered to pray for the convention. Over 9,000 gathered last Sunday in worship and prayer.
"A gathering of some 200 Muslims praying in Charlotte was given extensive national coverage. The massive Christian received scant coverage," Starnes added.
Benham said that 56 churches "adopted" a delegation and put together gift baskets welcoming the delegates. They also offered assistance in transportation, childcare or spiritual matters. But the DNC rebuffed their welcome.
“We were just trying to display Southern hospitality,” Benham said. “We wanted them to know we were happy to serve them.”
Democrats, however, told city officials the Christians would not be welcome.
“I got a call from the mayor’s office speaking on behalf of the convention and they asked us not to participate,” Benham added. “They told us our views on women’s rights are contrary to the platform.”
The Democratic Party platform supports abortion for any reason or no reason at all until birth, and supports taxpayer funding of abortions.
“I was blown away and could not believe it,” Benham said.
"Benham said it is true that all the churches are pro-life – but the baskets did not include a single political or pro-life message. They just wanted to give them regional candies and a welcome letter," Starnes said.
The DNC did not return requests for comments.
We reported earlier that the 2012 platform removed all references to God, and convention attendees booed when the original 2008 language was re-inserted into the platform. Now it seems that some in the Democratic Party have become so anti-Christian that they cannot even accept gifts from them.
You can find out more by researching. The main News Media hides the truth.

Is it just coincidence that the DNC attendees denied God three times as did Peter in the New Testament? In the Gospel of John Chapter 21 verses 1-17, Christ asks Peter if he loves Him. Each time Peter responds in the affirmative. Peter demonstrates his repentance. The same cannot be said of the former group mentioned in the first sentence above.

I just don't understand how so much religion creeps into government policy. I am not an advocate for abortion personally, but I am also not going to limit freedoms based on religious beliefs. If individuals choose to have abortion then so be it, and let that weigh on their soul. Far too many individuals are inclined to use religious morals, condemnation, and judgement as the fuel for political and governmental agendas and policies, whenever it nicely fits their motive. Ken Blackwell's letter has done just that... However, Ken has used parts of the Constitution that benefit his agenda numerous times in public office. It is hysterical to listen to politicians and their supporters pick and choose laws that support their agendas and then condemn the Constitution and those on other side of that freedom. Like all good lawyers Ken uses the words to convey ideas in particular way when it helps him, and crys foul when it doesn't... It is really a quite juvenile approach. Government should be more neutral in its function, so yes we should celebrate free speech, free markets, right to bear arms, and most importantly free will. Protect the choices we have as individuals. "Those who sacrifice essential liberties for temporary security deserve neither."

I commend you Ken Blackwell. A well written letter. If only we could get this information out to every American's hands so they can read this. I feel that General Powell would not understand that what he himself has done along with all the others that vote and even re-elected Obama was to destroy this country. They say times have changed, well it has but not for the better, what they did is destroyed their children and children's children, if America last that long. To think that it is OK to bring up a child in today's society and tell them its normal to sleep with the same sex, or its normal to murder a baby, or its normal to steal from another person, or to destroy another person's life etc etc.
America is losing her Blessings due to so much evilness and immorality. If we do not STAND up for JESUS and God's Word we will no longer have a future. We cannot depend on ourselves without God's help. Look at the killings happening in the schools. Evil started showing up there when we allowed the government and atheist to take God and the 10 Commandments out of schools and public places. Until we put Him back in these places then our children will not grow up to know the basics of Life and Love God's way. We need to put the True Living God back in our schools, public places and especially our hearts so that America can once again be Blessed. Let God be our guide and there will be a change. At least God talks of Love. I will continue to pray that His children will look up and ask Him to guide them as before. But we must take the first step in asking for repentance and deciding that straddling the fence will not work. Either you are for God or devil, which is it? Where will you spend Eternity? The choice is yours...

This says a lot of why America has fallen, it is because there is no fear of God or the eternal life that each and everyone of you will be living. You are gonna life somewhere for eternity, where will you be?

When you become entitled to exercise the right of voting for public officers let it be impressed on your mind that God commands you to choose for rulers just men who will rule in the fear of God. The preservation of a republican government depends on the faithful discharge of this duty; if the citizens neglect this duty and place unprincipled men in office, the government will soon be corrupted.
