Two More Years of ‘By Any Means Necessary’

By any means necessary. Americans will be haunted by those four words for at least the next two years, courtesy of the most corrupt Oval Office occupant in recent history, aided and abetted by an equally corrupt Democrat party and their media propagandists. All of them are doing their utmost to upend one of our democratic republic’s most cherished assumptions: elections matter. The reliably pathetic New York Times leads the way. “In the 10 days since ‘we got beat,’ as he put it, by Republicans who captured the Senate and bolstered control over the House, Mr. Obama has flexed his muscles on immigration, climate change and the Internet, demonstrating that he still aspires to enact sweeping policies that could help define his legacy,” the paper gushes.

Memo to the hacks at the so-called paper of record: Obama isn’t “enacting” anything. He intends to pursue his agenda by dictatorial fiat, thumbing his nose at the Constitution, the newly-elected, GOP-controlled Legislative branch of government, and the American public.

And all of it is A-OK with the Times, which notes that “the back-to-back moves have reinforced Mr. Obama’s desire to assert himself in a period when his poll numbers and political capital are at their lowest ebbs. While losing Congress was a grievous blow that will further challenge his capacity to govern, advisers said that he feels liberated. He can now pursue his long-term agenda, they said, without being tethered to the short-term electoral concerns of his party’s leadership in Congress.”

Baloney. Obama is “liberated” to do as he pleases because he is no longer “tethered” to the rule of law.

What begets such insufferable behavior? The so-called conventional wisdom speaks to Obama’s blatant narcissism and while there is substantial evidence supporting that allegation, one suspects there is something far more twisted in play here. Nothing speaks to that reality better than the assertion Obama made Sunday that he did not intentionally mislead the public to get the healthcare law passed.

Think about that for a minute, especially in light of at least 37 documented instances where Obama promised Americans they could keep their insurance and/or their doctor, a lie so brazen even the left-leaning Politifact.com dubbed it their 2013 Lie of the Year. Still not convinced? Here’s a video compilation of Obama boasting about ending the war in Iraq more than a dozen times. In the video’s final scene, a reporter asks the president if he has any regrets about doing so and whether it gives him pause with regard to doing the same thing in Afghanistan. Obama’s response? “What I just find interesting is the degree to which this issue keeps on coming up, as if this was my decision.”

Commentary Magazine’s Peter Wehner says it best, noting that the president’s behavior is “getting pathological,” as glaring reality reveals itself. “No American can take joy in saying this, but the evidence clearly warrants it: We have a president who is lying about his lies,” he writes.

In other words, we have moved well beyond the point where anyone can doubt this president is an unabashed narcissist. We have reached a moment where the leader of the free world apparently believes history itself can be extinguished and replaced by an updated narrative of his own choosing.

Yet it may be worse than that. As best revealed by the Federalist Papers, there is little doubt the Founders were keenly aware of the corruption inherent in human nature. Yet in creating the checks and balances to address that reality, it seems they didn’t anticipate  a level of corruption so all-encompassing, an entire Democrat Party is seemingly content to relinquish their own Constitutional imperatives and abet our descent into tyranny.

And it is tyranny, as the approach to the three issues mentioned by the Times, along with ObamaCare, indicate. On immigration, the president has determined he will use an executive order to legalize as many as 5 million illegal aliens, because he “can’t wait” for Congress. Here’s a CNN article on the subject that notes many things, including what a “big political headache” it will cause for GOP party bosses. Note that CNN, in lockstep with much of the media that ring-fences Obama, fails to mention a highly salient reality: Democrats had an unassailable majority for the first two years of Obama’s presidency and did exactly nothing to address the issue. Instead CNN speaks to a president “setting out to prove he is no lame duck and can still set the agenda,” and that it is strictly Republicans who “believe Obama risks usurping his authority and even the constitution with his bold new strategy.”

Tyranny is not a bold new strategy and this article is a great indication as to why Obama believes history is “malleable”: he’s had a lot of help re-writing it.

The “muscle-flexing” on climate change and the Internet is cut from the same lawlessly imperious cloth. Both issues have been D.O.A. at the legislative level because of the irreparable harm they would do to America’s economic future, and because our commitment to the free and open exchange of ideas doesn’t need additional government monitoring, much less control. Nonetheless, the president is expected to turn the EPA and the FCC into de facto legislatures, free to impose regulation after regulation, absent any input from Congress.

And every step of the way, from the immigration “thumb in the eye” to the ongoing determination to regulate as many aspects of Americans’ lives as Obama deems necessary, Democrats and the leftist media have stood behind him, every step of the way.

Make that “stupid” Americans’ lives. For years, those of us on the right tried to warn the nation that Democrats’ lust for power far outweighs every other consideration. We tried to explain their unbridled contempt for the American public, contempt that included outright lying in pursuit of their self-defined “greater good.” Yet it was one of their own, ObamaCare architect Jonathan Gruber, who couldn’t have made it clearer. “Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage,” he said in 2012, explaining the machinations necessary to inflict the healthcare bill on the nation. “Basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to getting the thing to pass.”

Such overt contempt for ordinary Americans is nothing new. The best explanation for it is contained in a brilliant 2010 essay by Angelo Codevilla. Codevilla extensively outlines America’s transformation from a nation run by people with extensive experience in the private sector to one “formed by an educational system that exposed them to the same ideas and gave them remarkably uniform guidance, as well as tastes and habits. These amount to a social canon of judgments about good and evil, complete with secular sacred history, sins (against minorities and the environment), and saints.”

The result of that uniformity? “Regardless of what business or profession they are in, their road up included government channels and government money because, as government has grown, its boundary with the rest of American life has become indistinct.” Why? “Supposedly, modern society became so complex and productive, the technical skills to run it so rare, that it called forth a new class of highly educated officials and cooperators in an ever less private sector.”

And as Gruber has so succinctly indicated, those officials and cooperators firmly believe the rest of of us are insufferably stupid and must be regularly deceived – or, as Obama so clearly indicated, ignored – for our own good.

By any means necessary. “If this huge influx of mostly low-skill workers provides some benefits to the economy as a whole – especially by keeping our workforce young, in contrast to an increasingly geriatric Europe and Japan – it also threatens to depress further the wages of blue-collar Americans and put strains on an already overburdened safety net,” Obama wrote in his 2006 autobiography. “I know some people want me to bypass Congress and change the [immigration] on my own,” he told La Raza’s National Council in 2011. "Believe me, the idea of doing things on my own is very tempting. I promise you. Not just on immigration reform. But that’s not how our system works. That’s not how our democracy functions. That’s not how our Constitution is written.“

Those statements are no longer operative, but they are extremely indicative of a rotten-to-the-core progressive ideology that allows one to take positions 180 degrees out of phase, as long as they ultimately accrue to the acquisition of power. It is power justified by the aforementioned arrogance rooted in the idea that the historical failure wrought by centralized government in pursuit of a socialist utopia occurred simply because the wrong people were in charge. And even now, its mindless cheerleaders have somehow missed the reality that a "worker’s paradise” where everyone is ostensibly equal requires a wholly oppressive cadre of enforcers to maintain it. Enforcers who inevitably consider themselves “more equal” for embracing the “higher calling” – of cracking dissident heads and sending them to the gulag for “re-education.”

That’s what “by any means necessary” is really all about.
