Obama's Owned -- You Can Bank on It

· Thursday, February 11, 2010

The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal are bristling with the news that Republicans have decided now is the time to suck up to Wall Street. As the saying goes, there is no truer friend than a Wall Street arbitrageur -- they are the salt-of-the-earth, the most loyal men who ever drew a breath!

What are Republicans thinking? While not every money-manipulator on Wall Street deserves to be treated like a heroin dealer, lots do. Could the Republicans be a little more discriminating in picking up the Democrats' old friends?

The Democrats are acting as if they want to punish everyone in the financial services industry, including the innocent, while the Republicans seem to want to protect everyone on Wall Street, including the guilty.

How about just punishing the guilty? The Democrats can't do that because the list of Wall Street's biggest offenders may turn out to be eerily similar to the list of Obama's biggest campaign contributors.

Employees from Goldman Sachs gave more to the Obama campaign than any other organization except the University of California -- with Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase quickly following in sixth and seventh place.

Whatever Obama has in mind for punishing the financial industry, I promise you, he won't punish his friends. After JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon took a $17 million bonus this week, and Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein got a $9 million bonus, Obama said he didn't begrudge them their bonuses, saying, "I know both those guys."

Obama seems to be hoping that his vague bluster about "obscene profits" will lure Republicans into embracing Wall Street welfare recipients -- thereby losing Americans forever.

Never bet against Republicans being outwitted.

Risk-taking and speculation are good. But the Democrats' crony capitalism is the worst of both worlds: risk-taking without any real risk for the risk-takers. It's like gambling with your rich daddy's money, except we're the rich daddy.

Obama, like the rest of his party, is an ideologue who doesn't understand or particularly like the free market. He fundamentally believes in the efficacy of the welfare state, whether the beneficiary is a layabout single mother or a rich Wall Street banker.

As Peter Schweizer describes in his magnificent book "Architects of Ruin," the Democrats have been bailing out investment houses from their bad bets since the Clinton administration. The bankers got all the profits when their risky bonds were paying -- and then gave massive donations to their Democratic benefactors. But once the bets went bad, it was the taxpayers' problem.

Heavily leveraged securities packages put together by Goldman Sachs and others were the HIV virus that killed the American economy. And the reason investment firms piled leverage on leverage on leverage was that they knew the government would bail them out if their house of cards collapsed.

On one hand, Goldman put together toxic securities packages for their clients, but on the other hand, Goldman knew the mortgage securities being sold on the market were crap, so they also took out lots of insurance with AIG on crappy products being traded on the market.

It would be as if, anticipating a major earthquake, Goldman bought massive insurance policies on every house on the San Andreas fault line.

There's nothing wrong with taking risks and making bets, provided that if you bet wrong or if you bankrupt your betting partner with wild gambles: You lose.

The problem was that Goldman and AIG, among many others, knew they wouldn't lose. Twenty years of Democratic bailouts have led them to understand that when their bets go bad, the taxpayer will save them.

Which is exactly what happened.

When the earthquake hit toxic securities, the insurer, AIG, couldn't pay up. Normally, that would result in the insurer going bankrupt, an orderly proceeding in bankruptcy court to distribute AIG's assets, and Goldman recovering only a portion of the insurance payout on the crappy products.

But instead of AIG going bankrupt and Goldman taking a hit, the U.S. taxpayer made good on AIG's securities insurance. In a deal arranged by former Goldman CEO and current Obama BFF, Hank Paulson, Goldman ended up being paid -- by you -- an astonishing 100 cents on the dollar.

So Goldman CEO Lloyd Blankfein's boast that his firm didn't want TARP money and has paid it all back is completely irrelevant. Goldman took billions of dollars -- that's millions with a "b" -- of the AIG bailout money. How about paying that back?

It took The New York Times a year and a half to figure out Goldman's jackpot winnings from the AIG bailout -- $12.9 billion, according to the Times -- so the first thing Republicans ought to do is hold hearings to determine who benefited from the Democrats' crony capitalism, and not take their bluster as fact.

The next step should be to get all the bailout money back.

When the government steps in to save the very financial institutions that poisoned the nation's financial system with contaminated securities and derivatives -- all while the bankers get to keep the fees and bonuses on their bad bets -- we are not talking about a free market.

We're talking about regular Americans being forced to foot the bill for the gambling habits of left-wing multimillionaires by buying the malefactors more chips every time they lose.

Republicans should defend any investment houses that never benefited from a government bailout. But anyone who took huge gambles, lost and got bailed out with taxpayer money should be tortured and then shot, miraculously brought back to life, tortured some more, then shot a few more times.

Goldman not only got bail out money, they moved right into the White house. Look at the number of ex-Goldman employees who are part of the cadre of advisors to Obama and you will see that they not only took money from the taxpayers but they are up close and personal to the president! Sort of like the fox guarding the hen house!

Concur that they should be held accountable. I have several dear friends who owned smaller banking companies that weren't bailed out and now they are black balled by the regulators from working in the industry. Some of them have been personally devistated. Need to have consistency at all levels. No wonder we dont trust Dept of Treasury.

It appears as though once a promising person gets elected to office he/she has this required orientation session that places a plunger on one side of the head and a plug on the other side and then they plunge out any and all common sense along with any remaining brain cells. I wonder when our newly elected Senator from Massachusetts is scheduled for his appointment. God help us all.

We need to go back to the DOI. We can do better.

This goes deeper than just the bailouts, although they wrong on the basis of one simple principle: You pays your money and you takes your chances. It's called gambling. Wouldn't it be nice if you could go to Vegas, and City Hall would repay you every cent you lost at the craps table? That's more or less what happened here. But it goes deeper: it goes all the way back to the Liberal policy of letting banks sell bad debt. It let banks make tons of bad loans, because they knew they could sell them off if need be, at full value. Which is exactly what they did, which is exactly what led us to these dire economic straits. I'll be honest, I would never have bought a house had it not been for a subprime ARM. And, I lost my house, because when my finacial situation changed (our income dropped by over $1000 per month), I was unable to secure new financing, because now the banks were tightening down on bad loans. Where's MY bailout? Hint: I don't want one.

Andy jackson had short shrift made of Nicholas Biddle and Clay when they tried to hijack the republic with the first National Bank. Jackson cared not one wit for the mainstream; he grew tired of the depravations of the Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Creek as well as the Cherokee, so had them forcibly removed to Oklahoma. He then balanced the budget by selling off their lands as one precept.A little seizure program would go a long way to settling the chop on Wall Street

We need another president who takes the reins of power and does good with it for the benefit of the republic, not special interests and whining minorities like gay bicycle riders on meth or whatever is vogue this week amongst the white liberal trash that want to spend our money so they can feel good. ENOUGH!! George Soros is a hard core communist, barely cloaked in his financial empire who believes he has the right to change America. He is but one of the Pretender's handlers, and should be brought to justice. Take that bloated bureuacracy the Department of Justice and make them earn their living by doing whats right for middle America, instead of oppressing whomever exercises their CONSTITUTIONAL rights by speaking out against business as usual in that polluted pissoire cleverly disguised as our capitol.

November will be the wake up call. The Republicans and the Democrats have both forgotten, who pays the bulk of the taxes, who fights the wars, who espouses a Christian, ethical America and who has finally had enough of people hyphenating their nationality, overunning our social system with illegal immigrants, having ungrateful, hostile adherents of a personality cult forced on them in the thousands under the guise of freedom of religion. If you get elected it will be because you have taken a sacred oath to protect the constitution and MEAN it this time. Nothing less than indictments for the remainder.

A new ground swell is out there bent on wresting control from the bloated bureaucrats, and that band of hookers calling themselves a Congress.

Personally I think it is breathlessly exciting that Washington is scared shatless of a diminutive petite with the intellect of Disraeli.

Yes, the Democrats threw, and continues to throw billions to Wall Street. But please do recall, the bail-outs began with George Bush, Republican, and Henry Coulson, his Republican Secretary of State. In a sane world, these crooks would be on trial and on their way to prison. In a sane world, our national media would be all over this story as the scandal of the century, and scores of Congressmen from both parties would be scrambling to turn state's evidence in order to grab a lighter sentence.

In 2008, Barney Frank (House Banking Committee) testified that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were "perfectly fine, absolutely nothing wrong with them and anyway if something did happen then the government could just bail them out, right?"

In 2009, Obama spent enormous amounts of time blaming the recession on the "failures and greed of Capitalism."

In 2010, Obama explained away the latest multi-million dollar bonuses for the executives at these failed companies as perfectly reasonable, citing them as evidence that "the free markets are working." Suddenly, Obama is a free-markets guy!

This is a serial con-job, a massive fraud upon America that should ever single American running into the streets waving a pitchfork and demanding the heads of the Congressmen who signed off on this massive theft.

As for Mr William Baker, where does that leave us? Please don't be confused by misapplied labels. Very little about George W Bush could be described as Conservative. Most of today's Republicans are RINOs -- Republican in Name Only. They wouldn't know a free market if it fell on their heads. Where does that leave us? Simple. Stop electing people who pay lip service to free markets but then vote for these obscene bailouts and government takeovers of private industries. Pay attention and vote genuine Conservatives into office, people who support the Constitution AS WRITTEN, not as some living document offering suggestions. Vote in people who adhere to free market principles.

Socialism = EPIC FAIL.

So, Ann, are you trying to tell us that Matt Taibbi’s Rolling Stone article in June of ’09 - "The Great American Bubble Machine" - was accurate?

Bout time someone with Ann’s notoriety said this OUT LOUD, thank you Ann.

What is not mentioned in this article is that AIG can still sell Credit Default Swaps with ZERO capital reserves to back such “crap” because we the people are still the guarantor AND that Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch (good riddance Lehman/Bear Stearns) can still sell mortgage backed securities to anyone stupid enough (Uncle Sam/You and Me) to buy them.

Wait till the Fed finally raises the discount rate, round two will start. Brace for impact, learn to speak Chinese.

Another big reason AIG was bailed out is that they are the company who handles health insurance for congressional members. Congress could not allow them to fail and leave them without their self elected insurers.

Can someone tell me why all of these freedom, capitalist haters don't just move to the full spectrum of Socialist choices in which to live?

The vehemence of our sacred Constitution and country is palpable in the current White House. They are freedom haters who have the freedom to move to a government that they would no longer have to fight and where they would no longer feel like "outsiders". Hundreds would help them pack and pay their fare to leave with an extra bonus to leave today! And if they don't feel well after the long flight they could line up for a little Socialized health care to make them all feel right at home!

I myself believe there is little, if any, difference between any party the way the system is set up now. They are all OWNED by someone. They all need to be replaced. I think we need to start by adding a third party. If it is called a Tea Party then that is okay.

An individual brought up a really simple idea. Tea Party supporters should put a number 3 on the bumper of their car ( or anywhere else they want to). This will at least start a show of support for change. How can they hijack this sign of support? Maybe if we can show some unity by this we stand a chance. This needs to just be a simple number and not a nascar earnhardt decal.

The reason the federal government can get by with this kind of Chicanery is because over many years starting way back in the 1920's and 1930's up to the present day, the federal governmemt with the exception of Ronald Reagan, has mastered the practice of constitutional piracy against the American people. The worse part about it all, is that the American people have not yet realized it because they have been brain washed into believing that the fed is the authority in this country not realizing that they (the people) are. The government now truly believes it themselves. The raw truth of it is that the American people created the government and the Constitution and gave limited authority (9th and 10th Constitutional Amendments) to the government to be the people"s servant, but the governmemt stole the rest of it illegally and unconstitutionally. The American people can take it back at any time they choose to. The Constitution and the fed government belong to (is the property of) the American People. By the way, as a side bar, America is not and never has been a democracy. It was and is a Constitutional Republic. A democracy and a Constitutional Republic are light years apart in their organizational structure. Briefly, a Constitutional Republic is all about the "Individual". A democracy is all about the "majority" which can be easily manipulated and controlled as our president and congress do on a daily basis. Thanks for the opportunity to preach America a little. God Bless.

Ann, nobody tells a story like you! As always, you are right on the money.

Unfortunately, the Republicans benefit from the same "benefactors." To repeat the phrase, "This isn't legislation, this is corruption" runs on both sides of the aisle. Raiding the public treasury for the benefit of any industry is unconstitutional regardless of who does it. The fact that the TARP fiasco was initiated by the Bush administration and carried on under Obama only shows how deeply the corruption is entrenched. A credible challenge from an independent, Constitution-oriented movement is urgently needed before our nation is bankrupt, our currency debased, our free-enterprise system socialized, our liberty stripped from us, and our children placed in an eternal subordinate debtor position to foreign powers.

as to Ann Coulter's comment, "...regular Americans being forced to foot the bill for the gambling habits of left-wing multimillionaires...", if I am not mistaken and recall correctly, the bailout of AIG was done in the summer/fall of 2008, started before Obama was elected, started by the Bush administration. So while I am disgusted by the bailout and the relentless abuse of US taxpayers, I don't think the "left-wing millionaires" are the only millionaires wallowing in the mud on this one. I don't think anyone is praising the Bush administration for starting the bailouts. But the fact remains, had it not been for the bailout guarantees given to the likes of Goldman/Sachs, AIG, Fannie Mae, and Freddy Mac by the Clinton administration, they would not have played so fast and loose with other people's money. Had they been told from the get-go, "...if you or any of your team is captured, the secretary will disavow all knowledge", they would have known it was their necks on the line. Feeding them more taxpayer bailout money is tantamount to giving Roman Polanski a daycare license.

Support, vote for and elect true conservatives but keep a close eye on them once they are in office. I can't wait for Nov.

Excellent analysis of how corrupt our government has become. Republicans need to be careful who they support. Voters are much better informed and more aware than they used to be about what is happening in Washington. I think this will felt at the ballot box by both Democrats and Republicans in November. The following link describes more of the same kind of financial gain for wall street. http://www.thinkbigworksmall.com/mypage/player/tbws/23088/1094776

Way to go Ann!! Let's not limit the targets to Wall Street Felons, many of the republicans will make great targets.

Good thoughts, but just a thought.

Could this be true that the government forced the asset to be created, insured the asset through AIG-GS. Which left us, the people(the ones that pay tax) holding the insurance bill, which got called, that dysfunctional government created in the first place on the backs of the taxpayer to guarantee.

Free market works if we can release the market from government interference.

I take issue with your comment that people need to be tortured and then shot resurrected and shot again. There is no need to be violent, although; I can identify with the feeling. A patient man with a plan and purpose will win the day. You cannot in good taste request prayer for our troops and then wish someone dead. Calvin had Servetus killed because he didn't agree with his ideas. Thus Calvin is a murderer. This is not good theology, common sense or even erudite. Continue to make your voice known as a martinet and you will be respected. Thank you for inviting my comment. Chaplain US Army Godspeed

Love Ann's writings as always. However, in this one, she went over the edge on her "final solution". Doesn't she realize that the taxpayers are broke? Who is going to fund the additional costs involved in multiple shootings of the same crooks? One well-placed shot seems sufficient; no need to resurrect the dead for more shots.

There was another "fishy" deal some years ago.

The US government made a 25 million (?) loan to Mexico to pay up a Mwxican loan that was going to 'default'. I never could find who held the loan. It was never mentioned in our newspaper,

Times Union of Albany, NY. Interesting?

How can "we the people" force the private bank "The Federal Reserve" to refund the money they have stolen from us since 1913?

Just imagine where we would be if our soldiers were doing the kind of job our politicians are doing.

We would still be a colony of Britain, or could be speaking Japanese, Germany or even Spanish.

"...bail them out IF their house of cards collapsed." My only correction--it should read WHEN, not if. Greed and foolishness always bites back.

Obama is a post turtle. The farmer seeing a turtle sitting on a post stopped to investigate. He found there was no way the turtle got there by itself, now that it was there it did not know what to do and the only question was.....Who put him there?

Just a thought! In my opinion, it is possible that the Democratic National power brokers conceived, planned and executed the housing market to collapse causing the financial market trauma to occur at a time when the Republican party could be blamed and potentially hurt the most? Were Senators Dobb and Frank and others that conniving? (If so, it seems now that their scheme is backfiring.......did the Democrats really believe everyone should own a home and subtly pressure the financial markets to loan money that could not be repaid, and; then to assure Wall Street the protection of a bailout?)

Misery and Suffering (poverty) is directly proportional to the funds set aside for its relief. Entitlements are causing people to become parasitic and will destroy the host! Let's not let our congressmen continue buying goodwill. The greatest charity is to give a person a good job and yes work is honorable.

Shall we replace Democrat Socialism with Republican

Fascism. Maybe its' time to eliminate the usual Left-Right "Dead Fall" with something less corrupted.

Just another example of the corporatism (sp?) aka Fascism that is rampant in DC--and has been for years. It doesn't matter who is in office, the cause is simply too much money (ours) and too much power over the economy and our lives.

Look at the facts:

Fannie, Freddie, FHA, and the CRA caused this problem. Don't blame it on wall street. The SEC monopoly of the only authorized risk evaluation entities (Fitch, Moody's and Standard and Poor's) insured that business would not be able to correctly evaluate the risks created. In 2004, the SEC also authorized only 5 banks (Bear, Lehman, Merrill, Morgan and Goldman) to leverage up to 30 and 40 to 1. The ability to leverage up to that level is not a problem, but by authorizing it, the government gave an implicit guarantee for the losses--with our money.

Put it together: forced writing of subprime mortgages for risky buyers, massive additional risk guaranteed, credit agencies with no competition due to a government monopoly, and a government guaranteed, subsidized buyers (Fannie, Freddie, et al.) to relieve the banks of any real risk if they don't hold the risky mortgages that the government nearly forced them to make.

Bottom line: whoever is in office will be corrupted because we have given/they have taken too much power. The cannot sell it, or be corrupted, if we take back the power and the money. Yes, big business did their best to exploit the 'system' as established by the government. Yes, they should have had to suffer the losses. We failed twice over, once by allowing the government to set up such a system to begin with, and again by letting the criminals who caused it bail out their accomplices in big business.

If anyone doubt's the facts above, let me know, I have all the sources.

Not sure why it is so important to some on this board to try and blame the bailouts entirely on Bush. The bailout bill was written by a congress controlled by the democrats.

Excellent! Aftr the 1987 bailout of the hedge fund that first relied on teh same basic set of flawed genius math formula that was supposed to remove all risk, theyscould safely bet they would be bailed out.

This, under Bush and Obama but both Democrat congresses that should have voted no, was supposed to save the economy, etc. Whether taking on trillions of government debt to China saved or will ultimately crater the U.S. economy and burden your grandchildren anyway. Contrary to every principle, they also allowed, and financed, obscene bonuses for the alleged geniuses that presided over this trin wreck. Unlike AIG, Goldman Sachs, Citi, etc., it will take ten years to a generation for employment opportunities and the real economy to recover, contrary to Obama's promises. Would we have been any worse off to have let thesegambling houses face the consequences of their own bad bets?

Keep on Giving them hell, Ann!

Not that it HAS to be, but the dems have made the issues SO complex that my feeling is that the average Obama voter, indeed the average voter, cannot understand what is really being done to him/her by the current administration. It is hard to maintain heart in this battle when the average voter cannot be honestly informed. What to do?
