Republicans on Track to Snatch Defeat from Jaws of Victory
· Thursday, May 20, 2010
Republican consultants are doing a wonderful job raising expectations sky-high for the November elections, so that now, even if Republicans do smashingly well, it will look like a defeat (and an across-the-board endorsement of Obama's agenda). Thanks, Republicans!
That's what happened in the 1998 congressional elections, nearly foiling Clinton's impeachment. It's what happened to the Conservative Party in Britain a week ago. And that's what happened this week in the 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, formerly represented by Rep. John Murtha.
Note to Republicans: Whenever possible, victory parties should be held after the election, not before it.
The result of the election in Murtha's old district on Tuesday was that the rabidly anti-ObamaCare, pro-life, pro-gun candidate won! Yippee!
But the news on Wednesday morning was that the election "dealt a blow to Republicans," as The New York Times reported.
The reason the Times' description was not utter madness (in violation of New York Times' official policy) is because the anti-ObamaCare, pro-life, pro-gun candidate was a Democrat and, for the past two months, every Republican on TV has been predicting a Republican victory in Murtha's district.
Thanks to all the happy talk, if the Republican actually had won, it would have been Page 16 news. But when the Democrat won, it seemed like an against-all-odds, come-from-behind Hoosiers victory!
Why were Republicans predicting victory in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-1? Given a choice between two candidates who both hate ObamaCare, why would lifelong Democrats not vote for the Democrat?
Republicans are playing the same raised-expectations game with the November elections. Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner is ludicrously predicting Republicans will pick up 100 seats in the House in November. Newt Gingrich puts the figure at an equally insane (and weirdly precise) 78. He also predicts the Cubs will win 132 games this season and six games will be rained out.
Keep it up, Republicans, and I'm going to keep naming names. I have Nexis.
For more than half a century, the average midterm pickup for the party out of power has been 24 seats.
Your job, Republicans, is not to go on Fox News and whisper sweet nothings in conservatives' ears. Your job is to repeal the Obama agenda. Raising expectations so high that a 30-seat Republican pickup will seem like a loss is not helping.
Moreover, we're not going to pick up any seats this November if Republicans keep chumming around with the Democrats' pals on Wall Street.
Roughly since the Harding administration, Wall Street has overwhelmingly favored Democrats. According to a recent report from ABC News, for example, the five largest hedge funds gave "almost all their donations to Democrats."
For the past year, the Democrats' Wall Street BFFs have had lower public approval ratings than Hitler. (When I say "Hitler," I don't mean Dick Cheney or George W. Bush; I actually mean Adolf Hitler.) While Hitler continues to enjoy great personal popularity, there is a growing dissatisfaction with his policies.
How could Republicans possibly screw that up? We try harder.
No sooner had the news come out that Goldman Sachs (Joseph Goebbels in this metaphor) had given Obama an astronomical $1 million in campaign donations, than Republican John Boehner decided that this was the time to suck up to Wall Street! So Boehner flew to New York to meet with Wall Street bankers and ask them to be Republicans' friends.
Boehner is like the guy who just got raped in prison and doesn't know what happened to him. Hey -- what was that? Should I have thanked the guy?
As Pat Caddell says, Democrats are whores, but they expect to be paid; Republicans' names are scrawled on the bathroom wall: "For a good time, call the GOP!"
As depressing as it is to watch the Republican Party dive headlong off a cliff, at least we have Dick Blumenthal.
Connecticut's attorney general, pompous, freakishly ambitious, self-righteous, hold-a-press-conference-every-day Blumenthal, was a shoo-in to take Chris Dodd's Senate seat this fall.
After all, he was a Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star and Purple Heart winner from his days as a four-star general in Vietnam. (And captain of the Harvard swim team to boot!)
But now we find out from a front-page article in The New York Times that, despite Blumenthal's repeated references to serving "in Vietnam" -- he was never in Vietnam. He got five draft deferments and then joined an elite unit of the Marine Reserves to avoid going to war, serving in their heroic "Toys for Tots" brigade.
He also wasn't on the Harvard swim team. (Oddly enough, though, the story Blumenthal likes to tell about owning a necklace of human ears? That one's actually true.)
Blumenthal may as well have shown up for a press conference in a dress. Suddenly, Connecticut is in play!
Naturally, therefore, Republicans are planning on running a World Wrestling Entertainment "impresario" against Blumenthal. Yes, in Connecticut ... a state that is among the wealthiest and most highly educated in the nation ... a state that isn't Minnesota. The average Nutmegger doesn't even know what a turnbuckle is, and that includes me.
Republicans could run Rob Simmons, a Connecticut legislator with a distinguished record of service in the House of Representatives, the CIA, and as a Yale political science professor -- who actually did serve in Vietnam, winning two Bronze Stars and retiring as a colonel.
But defeat is so close! Republicans can almost taste the bitterness of yet another crushing loss!

Ann,
This piece was brilliant. Thank you for stating in writing what I have been saying to firends and relatives for years. The Republicans currently in office and in charge of the G.O.P. are no different that the other party. THEY JUST DON'T GET IT.
This isn't about being a Republican or the other party. This is about what is right. The winner in the Murtha district in Pennsylvania is proof of that. If he, indeed, proves to carry the fight to the obama crowd from the Democrat side of the aisle, conservatives have still won. If what has been written about this guy is true, he holds all of the conservative ideals, as a Democrat.
I refer back to 1994 when Newt and the boys won the House and Senate and drove Clinton crazy. We had a majority of the seats in the House and something like a 60 - 40 majority in the Senate (after two defections from the Democrats). Within six years, Trent Lott had driven that majority to a 50 - 49 deficit. Congratulations Trent, a job well done.
Ann, you and your fellow conservative writers need to hold Michael Steele and the rest of the G.O.P. accountable for this stupidity. DO NOT allow these intellectual cretins the opportunity to wrest control of the House away from Obama and Pelosi. A massive strategy shift is needed. The G.O.P. leaders may want to consult with Ron and Rand Paul.

It is a simple concept that Republican candidates must grasp. That they must distinguish themselves from Democrats. It really is pretty easy. Just follow the Boy Scout law, you know, starts out with "Trustworthy". Repeatedly cozying up to Democrats and their accomplices while all the while using a calculator to try to figure out what strategy is best to LOOK like a Republican, is a phenomenon that is now SOP. Ron Paul, for years, has said basically, "Damn the torpedoes, I am going to do and say what is right (i.e., conservative)." That is the character we need in Republican candidates. Republican candidates who falsely claim to be heroic Vietnam vets, or claim to be conservatives while not having a clue what the word means, are entitled to be dragged around the courthouse block behind a '64 Ford pickup with a piece of barb wire tied around an ankle. (The bumper will stay on those.)American voters need to see a clear difference between liberals and Republican candidates in November. This nation literally will not survive much longer if the legislative insanity going on since Bush approved the bailouts continues. It is imperative for this nation to elect many, many true conservatives in November. P.S. Michael Steele is a clueless idiot. Why he got picked for the job is unfathomable.

Rigth on, Ann. And tomovich, these are not intelligent people. They are cunning people. They know how to keep their jobs most of the time, but have done nothing whatsoever to thwart out-of-control spending, even under Bush, or the globlist agenda that is killing our country. We have very few actual leaders in either party, and little hope of getting any because when the deep pockets behind every politican at the federal level are globalist billionaires, intelligent people don't get to run for office unless they have their own deep pockets to fight with. Until Republicans wake up and smell the coffee and see that the rank-and-file conservatives will contribute to a real candidate capable of real leadership, we will only have more of the same, a bunch of RINO's heroically snatching defeat after defeat for the American people out of the jaws of victory.

You perfectly stated what I have been saying daily as I listen to the premature swagger and conjecture of Republicans and conservative commentators on TV and radio. Well done, Ann!!!!! Hopefully, the dolts will listen to you and get smarter about their tactics. They need to remember that they they haven't won until the votes are counted and that they are supposed to be in stark contrast to the Dems, not a watered down version!!! People will come out of the woodwork to vote for that!!

Great job, Ann. I wish you were president instead of what we have or may have in future. Not a week goes by that I don't get a phone call from some clown at the RNC asking for money to do this or that. Each time I tell them I am an Independent as well as a Tea Partier. The mention of the Tea Party abruptly ends the conversation. Fine. I am not interested in giving my hard-earned money to these incompetents. I just wish they would wake up and smell the coffee. We Americans are not stupid even though many in Congress may think so. We want CHANGE, we want it NOW, and any Incumbent in the way has got to go...period. Arlen Specter needs to retire and take Robert Byrd with him. Oh, and if he has room in the retirement buggy he should squeeze in Pelosi, McConnell, and Reed.

Right on the money!
If the leadership of the Republican Party doesn't wake up, and soon, the more reasonable figure of 24 seats may turn out to be 2 seats.
I'm very sad to see the party of my Father and Grandfather sinking beneath the waves of Washington's river of deception and stupidity.
This may be the right time to oust ALL incumbents and start with a new group of "govenrment we deserve".

I am having huge doubts as to the viability of this party, being a conservative through and through...they do not get it....Obama's agenda is repulsive, regressive and socialist..
They cannot win advancing Dem-lite...RINO's will lose big!!!

I think Roseman has the right idea. Do NOT donate money to any Republican you don't know personally. If you don't know your local/state/national republicans shame on you. If you are voting in the blind or because "old Joe" told you to, you deserve what you are getting now.

The GOP is still in denial. They don't realize how badly the Bush years damaged the credibility of the Republican Party.
One way for the Republican Party to regain the confidence of middle Americans is if the true conservatives, the ones who really do uphold the Constitution, start a new wing of the party - Constitution-Republicans. They take a pledge to:
Vote against all measures that would expand the power of the Federal government
Vote against all bills that would fund activities prohibited to the Federal government by the Constitution

I've been doing the same thing, Roseman! Great minds DO think alike. The RNC calls almost daily for my poor mother-in-law, and when I can intercept the call, I tell the guy on the other end something akin to what you said: I'm a Tea Partier, I won't support RINO's, and they had better get their collective heads from down under or they'll lose all support from an ever growing number of Patriots who DO get it: Primus Principius!

Keep on telling it like it is Ann. The Repubs are like a lost ball in high weeds. Their literature and calls for donations seems to be one step above a 6th grade platform for student council. It is crap. We don't need more Repubs than Dems...we need less of both and more principled conservatives to turn the boat around and head in a new direction. Preferably into the jaws of this mess and begin hacking away at it.

George, the trouble is that I DO know them, and they are the same types of RINOs that exist in the national party. The same types of RINOs that put Scozzafava on the ballot fighting every Conservative tooth and nail along the way. No Sir, this goes way beyond incompetence, and borders on treason!

Yall, Ann is on top of it but some if not all of you are missing a valuable point. The Dem that won the seat Murtha used to occupy is a Conservativce too. Hence the Dems in PA kept a Dem. What "our" party needs to do is something REALLY radical...like support the CONSERVATIVE. If the Republican running is a RINO and the Dem is a Conservative (or better yet there is a consevative Independent) then the party and WE the PEOPLE need to support them. QUIT making this about parties. In case you haven't noticed BOTH parties are screwing us.

Coulter raised an interesting point about the failure to impeach clinton. However, we must never forget that the failure to impeach clinton saved this nation the horrors of having algore in the Oval Office when we faced 9/11.
Sure, Bush won in 1999, but he was running against algore, the VP, not algore the incumbent President. Does anyone honestly believe that had algore been President during the 1999 elections, he would have lost?
So, although Republicans failed in their attempt to remove clinton, the result was saving, at least for a time, this nation.

57Cynic, I don't think most of us are missing the point at all. In fact, it's what the Tea Party movement is all about. There are members of all parties at the rally's, despite the media's best effort to portray all of us as right-wing republicans only. Your seeing a wholesale rejection of governing philosophies, not political parties as Ann has pointed out in her analysis of the 12th Congressional District race in Pennsylvania. The Dem won by rejecting the party line and the current administration.

@Goldman,
My primary principle is "Don't give money to politicians, it only encourages them."
I have never registered as a member of a party - Indiana permits that, and you only have to declare which ballot you want in the primary. Indiana missed an opportunity this year in the opposition to Evan "I'm not a moderate but I play one on TV" Bayh - there were too many candidates and the name recognition, inside-the-beltway, former Senator, present-day lobbyist Dan Coats got the GOP nod - Not the TEA party choices. I may still register with the GOP just to join forces in the anti-Obama battle, but this was a major setback.
The GOP still hasn't gotten the message it was sent in 2006 - if you give the public the choice between Democrat and Democrat-lite, the libs will vote for the real Lib, and the conservatives will vote with their feet. How did the GOP lose both the House and the Senate in 2006? By spending, raising entitlements and taxes like Democrats. They didn't get the message in 2008 and the results are historic. Historic numbers of unemployed, foreclosures, bailouts, car and insurance companies owned by the Federal Government, open illegal immigration, and America Bashing on the floor of the House today by the President of Mexico! If the GOP doesn't get the message PDQ, November may be too little, too late, let alone 2012. It has happened before. Who remembers the Whigs?

With all due respect, I humbly submit that both parties need to be disbanded. Each candidate would then be judged upon his ideas not his ideology. He must have a mind coupled with a brain to be a viable candidate. He must know how to read and think not grovel for money and love corporations which are nothing less than entities formed to avoid personal responsibility. It would be quite helpful if the candidate knew who he really is and could live according to natural Law.
It would also be helpful if he could spell Constitution, knew the futility of war and knew that empires fade and die every time.
Of course the above is opinion and quite useless in shedding any light upon truth. Alas, we must progress! It sometimes is very messy to do so.

The MSM loves this because they know that they higher you jump, the further you have to fall if it doesn't go ALL the way your way. It so simple it is stupid. In order to get my vote and I dare say millions of other conservative votes is to actually stand for the original intent of the constitution of the US of A. Do not think you can get my vote by labeling a different version of a socialist agenda G.O.P.
When you say you represent conservative values you had better mean it as we are not the blind sheep you believe us to be. We see right through your façade of anti-Obama health care by you’re using the words, I could have done it better. My dear old GOP, the only way you could have done it better is to get out of the flipping way and let the free market produce what free markets produce; a better product and stop trying to regulate us into slavery. If you have no intention of reversing this race to socialism you are part of save your time and money and don’t run for office because we don‘t want you.
Just an FYI, Mr. Gindrich when I have seen you on TV lately trying to capitalize on the anti incumbent sentiments in this country. I am reminded of you little TV appearance with Nancy Pelosi sitting on a park bench saying Global warming is real and we all have to work together to save the earth. You can go do your self before you and your comrades will ever get my vote. I will vote for the real deal, not some pandering politician who will say what he thinks we want to hear to ride a wave to office and then spend, spend and spend our money on programs our federal government has NO Constitutional authority to spend on.

Look at who they tried to shove down our throats and sometimes succeeded, Dole, Ford, Bush 1 & 2, Nixon, Eisenhower, etc. How come they are not screaming for BHO to produce a birth certificate? Have you ever heard a republican say BHO is a communist? And how many times have you heard a republican leader (still an oxymoron) say we need bipartisanship (giving in to the democrap squad)? Unfortunately for conservative America, the Washington GOP establishment are still not willing to put the gray matter they left on the kitchen table the day they began their tenure in the District of Collusion back into their craniums. Who do we have in Washington that is going to carry the ball for the people of this country. It appears . . . few.
I mean we do have a few good incumbent Republicans in congress, but darn few. How much can Michelle Bachman carry on her shoulders . . . alone.
For the sake of the survival of the country it is going to take everyday hardworking patriotic Americans at the polling booths to get the job done. There are good people out there to represent us. Listen to people like Tea Party members to find out who they are and for crying out loud get rid of the bums . . . all of them.

Ann, Well said. I always enjoy hearing you on the radio when I get the chance. This piece was spectacular. Unfortunately the Republicans do not care. It isn't they don't get it they refuse to change. I sent money to Rob Simmons in CT. I recently moved to my current location from New London, CT. Rob is a great guy who actually stands on principal. That is why the RNC does not sponser him and stand behind him. He tells it like it is. The RNC finally stopped asking me for money when I kept telling them that I wanted to know why they did not represent my views. I kept sending e-mails nad letters but was continuously ignored. As a result I now ignore them. Unfortunately I do not see a big running away with the RNC this coming election. I see even more dems elected as in truth they get the message out and now they do not have to even hide it. The Black leaders openly admit that it is socialism and they muster the votes. Repubs just try to tone it down some. Honestly I think they are in bed with the Dems... there is so little difference in their beliefs that no matter who wins we are not...

The Republican leadership keeps acting like a bunch of warmed-over Dems, and they just can't believe we conservatives keep punishing them election after election. It's called having principles.
Rand Paul's recent victory is a prime example. The leadership supports the wrong guy and we slap them around.
It's such a shame that conservatives have to compete with the Democrats AND the Republicans.

I love all the commentary about "not getting it", but it is you who dosen't get it. Politicians have one goal in mind and that is "Political Survival"!
Its all about keeping their job, or getting into office. The best way to gauge a canidate is by their personel lives before you elect them, not after. Intergity is also a good judge as well a commitment.
As for Blumenthal, he can go and stick it. Murtha can join in as well. These men brag about being a US MARINE but I seriously have doubts about their Integrity. We have a code we live by-all of our lives-not just while we served. When we have earned the title "UNITED STATES MARINE" we are obligated to carry that code forever! It is what makes us who we are, seperate, distinguished and proud. We gladly carry that code when others cannot.
"A man with-out honor is not a man, nor is he fit to lead" Being a Viet Nam Vet before it became popular has a flavor the wannabes will never know, and I resent their association and referal to being one. If there is to be trouble let it be in my time, for I intend to go in harms way!

As a registered Democrat who's sick of the extreme elements of my party not understanding electoral math, I have to say it's comforting to know this sort of intra-party squabbling happens in the GOP too.
This summer's going to be ridiculous. My not-so-bold prediction: the bums get thrown out in a fit of voter rage, and three months later, the voters are screaming about the incompetence of the new members of Congress (hey, it's their first day!).

Dear Miss Ann,
Right On! The Republican consultants are infected with the same disease that was instrumental in the Japanese losing the battle that turned the tide in the Pacific in WWII - Midway. The name of that disease that inhibited the much superior Japanese fleet which should have won the conflict with, if necessary, the force of steel might that vastly outnumbered the American fleet in almost every category - The Victory Disease (Read Miracle at Midway by Gordon W. Prange).
Darn it people, do you think that the Chicago Hustler and his mob are going to lay down and let defeat overwhelm them? This is going to be a fight to the finish. A fight that will Change America: Rightly or Wrongly.
If you see one of your dimocratic representatives or senators, ask them this one question: Did you stand to applaud the president of mexico when he delivered his insulting speech about Arizona's new immigration law? If they did stand, that should be enough ammo to get your senator or rep IMPEACHED!
Remember the Alamo, Remember the Maine, Remember Pearl Harbor, Remember 9/11, and Remember to get out the vote this November!

Ann,
The problem is that there is really only one party. When both parties feed from the same money trough, what difference can we expect. This fall many new faces will show up in D.C. and we the people will soon discover they work for the same old money. What is really needed is a ( for real )second party, one that actually offers something different! Let the two parties we have now simply merge into one. At some point it's better to just trade in the old junker that to keep replacing parts. Bill In N.M.

Ann,
Thanks for Standing up. There is, by design, a mass of confusion in our political rhetoric. When holding it up to the Constitution it makes little sense. The distillation seems to me a simple matter of good versus evil. When a group of people wish to shake their fist at God and act as though they themselves are the only point of accountability, principles of freedom, self determination and individual responsability get set aside by seductive promises that yield nothing but tyranny and slavory. Sorry about the soapbox, keep up the good work.
