Why We Treat Obama Like a Dog
· Wednesday, September 8, 2010
President Obama certainly has it ruff these days. With his approval ratings plummeting and both the House and the Senate trending Republican, he must feel like he's been put in the doghouse. Even members of his own party are attacking him; Chris Matthews, his designated chew toy, has even come out against the beloved teleprompter. In short, nobody seems willing to throw Obama a bone.
Which is why this week, President Obama, while pumping his rehashed and tiresome economic agenda -- an agenda that apparently consists of yelling "stimulus!" repeatedly, then throwing cash in the air and smiling -- he intoned, "Some powerful interests who had been dominating the agenda in Washington for a very long time and they're not always happy with me. They talk about me like a dog. That's not in my prepared remarks, but it's true."
Actually, it's not true. The only person who has ever likened President Obama to a dog is President Obama, who once declared that he was a "mutt" and a member of a "mongrel people." Obama's language brings to mind uncomfortable comparisons with Old Yeller, who was "an ugly, lop-eared mongrel, fancy free without a family tree." The comparison is uncomfortable because Obama is not, in fact, the best doggone dog in the West. He is the worst doggone dog in the East, accepting the mantle from the late Marley.
In reality, there's a reason nobody has compared Obama to a dog: dogs are likeable. They are friendly and loyal. They are man's best friend, as opposed to King Abdullah's best friend.
But let's take Obama at his word. If we're treating Obama "like a dog" -- and let's assume he means "Stone Free" Jimi Hendrix-style -- it's because he deserves it. If Obama were a dog, he'd be a bad dog. The kind of dog that routinely drinks from the toilet, and simply will not be taught that drinking from the toilet is bad manners (think Obama on health care). The kind of dog that barks at all hours of the night, just for attention (think Obama's pathetic need for constant adulation). The kind of dog that runs from intruders when danger's in the air (think Obama on Iraq, Iran, Russia, North Korea, China -- goodness, just think about Obama's position on any country that isn't an American ally). The kind of dog that chews on the furniture out of pure spite (if Obama's actually going to chew on the furniture, by the way, let me be the first to suggest he start with the new, hideous Oval Office accoutrements).
If Obama's a dog, he's a puppy that has never been housebroken, whose owner continually babies it and never requires basic standards of behavior. President Obama has never had to make a living; he has never had to face the consequences of his behavior, whether that behavior is hanging out with terrorists, doing cocaine, or attending a racist church for 20 years. He's never been held accountable. Finally, he's being held accountable. He doesn't like it, so he's rhetorically urinating in the middle of the living room.
Obama, like a bad puppy, acts badly because he doesn't recognize that he's not in the true position of authority. The American people stand above him. He is a public servant, a servant of our will. He seems not to believe that -- in fact, he thinks that America's the dog, he's the master, and he can simply order Americans to agree with him. He's utterly disconnected from reality.
In short, Obama has to learn to obey the American public. If not, we'll continue to treat him like a bad dog. Only worse, since he refuses to learn. And in November, he'll find out that bad dogs don't get any electoral Scooby treats.

Is the 'dog remark' indicative of Obama's inner insecurities?

The obamanation IS a dog: a mangy, rabid, untrained, wild beast with a tortured soul who believes he is the ruler of his master's house, gains trust through deceit and cunning, and who then freely bites his family and friends while he licks the hands of his master's enemies.

Leave it to people like Bruce to imply their racist tendecies on with the dog comment. in fact, all the right seems to be implying their racism in this comment.

Questionman: You liberals always think that just because conservatives disagree with Obama's policies or take and run with a comment that *he made* it must be because we're racist. Nobody even mentioned race until you came along.
I think this is called "projection." Your minds are always on race, therefore ours must be too. On the contrary, we're evaluating him on the merits. You should try it some time.

I agree with the point of the Mr. Shapiro's article, that there's a very good reason no one has compared the Obamanation to dogs. My wonderful dog has a far superior moral character than the individual currently occupying our White House.

Wait - the White House dog flies in a private plane, eats well, plays whenever he wants, and is expected to do nothing - so how is President Obama different?

To quote Mark Twain - "the only difference between men and dogs is that dogs don't bite the hand that feeds them".
Our Dear Leader has been biting the "feeding hand" for his entire lackluster career. He is the culmination of affirmative action. What have we wrought?

I get a very uncomfortable feeling when a person in the highest public office in the land makes comments like this. We are all aware of Mr. Obama's infallible narcissistic tendencies, but this is another side which I find disturbing. Could this be a peek of some underlying paranoia? Things aren't going right for the anointed one. Could it be that Americans really don't want the blessings that have been passed down by our savior in the White House and yet treat him like a dog? Very disturbing indeed.

Is obama's reference to a dog a reference to the Arab attitude towards dogs? Could he be appealing to the muslim world to come to his aid because Americans are treating him (and by extenuation, his fondness for muslims) like what they consider the lowest form of life?
Just the first thought that came to mind when I heard him speak those few words.

Ben is very correct. We must remind Mr. Obama he is the President of the entire United States, so why is he, by his accusations and ill-mannered comments, causing we the people to separate into two hostile camps--those who refuse to buy into his course for the nation and those who support everything he does? Obviously, it is purposeful, as this was the same divide and conquer tactic of national socialism in the 1930's.

Wow. You guys really fit the "hate mongering Republican" stereotype. Why don't you be a bit more open minded a bit less judgmental of a meaningless comment. You are the kind of people that think Democracy only works when the majority imposes its will on the minority. It's time we realize that the best way for a Democracy to function is by the majority doing what is necessary to protect the rights of the minority. Too often close minded people like yourselves would rather piss and moan than contribute to the greater good. Go ahead and throw your temper tantrums. I'll be over concentrating on the perpetuating that which makes our society stronger, better, and happier.

In evaluating the "dog" remark, one does need to keep in mind that many places in the world, Africa, Asia, and Mexico to name a few, do hold dogs to be the lowest form of life and a very bad thing with which to be compared. The American/European understanding of a dog as a trusted friend is not the primary understanding of dogs. in fact, if one examines the Bible it tends to have the lowest form of life, utter humiliation idea when dogs are mentioned as in the story of Jezebel or even the parable of the woman from Tyre in the Gospels. I for one am very disturbed by our President making such a remark. We do not see him as a dog, but as a human being who politically believes in socialistic programs for government. We stand against how he wishes to govern, not his race or creed. It is these principals that we must espouse and hold up because they are what shall win the day and any detraction into these kind of statements from either side simply direct the attention away from policies and practices to popularity. I think that is precisely why we are where we are today. I actually agree with "The Wisdom" when he states, "I'll be over concentrating on the perpetuating that which makes our society stronger, better, and happier." However, I sense from the context that he and I differ greatly on what it will take to make our society stronger, better, and happier. Less debt and more freedom I believe would help tremendously.

Jeff - since it was his remark, we just happen to agree with him. It is a first. Maybe everything he says isn't a lie after all? If the shoe fits, ....
As for a stronger, better, happier society? Well, that will take one thing and one thing only, as Dr. Sowell said, government getting the hell out of our way.

What are these comments about race even doing in these comments about this article. Race never even came into my mind the entire time I read this article. But comparing his actions to my dog and Obama's actions did. Shame on you for bringing up the race card-it's a disgrace to your supposed open-minded liberal ideology.

Agreed. We don't need name calling and we don't need to drag racist remarks into every argument. What we need is someone we can trust in the White House. I sincerely hope that the November elections demonstrate the firm resolve of most of our citizens to return to our Constitution and the Rule of Law in this country. Its going to be a difficult road for the next few years, but we can return to the ideas of the Founders and make Liberty meaningful.

The statement of this sites policies on posting -"Please keep comments civil and brief. Obscene, profane, abusive and off-topic comments will be deleted. Repeat offenders will be blocked." - must be there as some kind of joke or bitter irony.
Because not only is this entire article uncivil, abusive and offensive, so are a preponderance of the comments related to it that I've read so far.
On which planet in what Universe is invective rhetoric calling the President of the United States - and the Leader of the Free World - "a dog" considered civil?
It's not just disgustingly uncivil, it is heart-rending to see.
A good man who has been breaking his back to work FOR the citizens of this country - instead of working for the banks, corporations and oil companies - fighting to pull us out of the economic and International quagmire GW Bush put us into, and seeing to it that the tax-payers money is spent on us, we the taxpayers ourselves in the form of such things as health care so we can all live better, happier lives - speaks from the heart of his obvious pain that people talk about him like he's a dog - and instead of going to his defense - people like the author of this piece of very yellow journalism and most of the posters here, kick him.
You know, every one of us gets a little turn in Hell at some time or other - after death or while we are still here on earth - and when we are there, in all fairness in the sight of God or humanity each of us should get all the mercy we were willing to give others before we were in that spot.
People used to take pride in what went into the historical record about them.
So, Ben, you think you will be proud to have people - your children perhaps - look back on what you wrote calling a good man a dog?

I smile because I know someone who voted for Obama. What our gullible friends have been missing all along is BHO's consistent disdain for the people, and lack of faith in the people to provide for themselves best without government intervention. Never mind his prior and continued associations with radicals, racists, Muslims, and his prior and continued apologetic stance toward former and current enemies of the US, and his eternal fountain of our money that he's redistributing wherever it's going.
Some people insist he doesn't get what America is about. Others insist he does get what America is about, and he doesn't like it. I agree that the comment is in complete opposition to the American tradition of the dog being a trusted member of the family.
For the race-baiters, please... I'd rather see Alan Keyes in the White House than Joe Biden. OK? (and these dummies say "who?") Ideology is out the window when they start talking race.
