Mining Fool's Gold

· Thursday, January 26, 2012

While I was on a recent vacation, I watched Fox News more than usual. Mainly what I noticed is that while Alan Colmes, Juan Williams, Leslie Marshall, Bob Beckel and Geraldo Rivera, are the five most annoying things to be found on the network, rounding out the top 10 are the commercials for the gold merchants, Merit Financial, Lear Capital, Goldline, Discount Gold Brokers and Rosland. The worst of the lot is Rosland, which day after day, enables three of the least appealing guys in America, Ben Ferguson, dentist Larry Pickard and Jeffrey Nichols, to enter our living rooms. For sheer gall, it's hard to top the moment when young Ferguson asks Mr. Nichols why he purchases his gold from Rosland, while Nichols is simultaneously identified on screen as the senior financial advisor for the company!

It became increasingly difficult to take Romney's rivals seriously when they spent all their time attacking Bain Capital instead of focusing their anger on Obama Capital. To my mind, "vulture capitalism," which quickly replaced "at this point in time" as my least favorite expression, is when you take American tax dollars and hand them off to your fat cat contributors so that they, in turn, will send a portion of the loot back to Obama's Re-election Campaign.

I must confess I got awfully tired of hearing that Newt Gingrich was a changed man, so it was finally a relief when, once the Iowa caucus was behind him, he could again show his true, obnoxious, colors.

Although I don't hold most politicians in terribly high regard, at least when it comes to the ranks of the Republicans, it is hard to find anyone ranker than the former Speaker.

Even among the Democrats, it is rare to find anyone whose entire career has been motivated entirely by money, sex and revenge. While those are standard characteristics for a Shakespearean king, they're not ideal when it comes to an American president. On second thought, it's not all that rare among the Democrats. What could I have been thinking?

Sometimes the propaganda efforts by Obama are so clumsy that one can only laugh. For instance, he had a big bash at the White House for those so-called business owners whom he credited with "insourcing American jobs." While it was true that I couldn't recognize any of the people standing behind him at the photo op, it's also true that I don't know very many business owners. But, I finally caught on to the game when, after the staged event, we heard directly from two of the participants. The first was the Democratic mayor of Atlanta, and the other was the head of the Steelworkers Union. Only a former community organizer would identify such people as business owners. It reminded me of the charade when, in order to push his god-awful health care program, Obama had a bunch of shills don medical smocks and sit in the White House Rose Garden while gazing adoringly at him.

Even though the holiday season is now just a distant dot in our rearview mirror, it occurred to me the other day that the very same gremlins who annually wage war against the trappings and traditions of Christmas, parroting their favorite advertising slogan, "separation of church and state," are the most vocal when it comes to promoting Sharia Law as a viable option for American Muslims. I will also wager that they wouldn't voice the slightest objection if Kwanzaa were made a national holiday.

In much the same way, if the Tea Party favored liberals, but was otherwise unchanged in word or deed, we all know that Obama and his cronies would never in a million years accuse them of being racists, traitors and terrorists.

On the other hand, if the Occupy Wall Street movement consisted of conservatives, I find it highly unlikely that Nancy Pelosi would find the time or inclination to pay lip service to their spunk and youthful spontaneity.

It truly is a shame that most people in this country refuse to do any research at all for themselves and rely on talking heads who just may end their missives with a heartfelt kumbaya.

I have found that the instructions in Saul Alinsky's "Rules for Radicals" are very similar to what the Quran teaches.

This shows that Islam is not a religion as much as it is a very perverse totalitarian way to govern.

I refuse to take part in any sing-along with anyone who thinks Sharia Law has any place in our society or anyone who tries to hoodwink me into believing some progressive crapola.

I haven't heard of vulture capitalism, but I'm going to slap the next person who says "going forward".

My "favorite" Fox commercial (that seems to run 250 times a day) is the one where the jerk from Tax Masters--the one who sits sideways--tells tax evaders about how he can help them get away with it. If he's lying, he should be jailed. If he's telling the truth, the IRS should be jailed and I want my money back.

Is there any Truth in Advertising? Not really, they just come up with a pretty girl, some silly song, a cute kid, or cartoons with fuzzy creatures, and hope is will strike a chord to stimulate a purchase when at the store. There are some commercials that I have been unable to comprehend what they were selling. Advertisers are lying as much as politicians, and when they advertise on and therefore promote filth, I boycott the products. It would have to be a life or death situation, and the only product left, to make me buy anything made by GE. Another great article Burt!

You chose an appropriate title for this article, Burt.

Another great stream of consciousness with flawless analysis from Burt! Bravo.

Regarding the gold commercials: Even though I agree that the government is trashing the economy either a) on purpose or b) because they are incompetent, I cannot bring myself to invest in gold. It strikes me as a ponzi scheme: These same folks promoting it got in on the ground floor and have to keep promoting gold to raise the prise. One wonders when that market will collapse.

So, I concur with the sentiments on truth in advertising.

Thanks! Rod

Speaking of commercials could someone PLEASE explain the bathtubs in the Cialis commercials.

It is like calling illegal aliens undocumented workers or drug dealers undocumented pharmacists. What is new about this, politicians have been doing it from the dawn of time. OBastard is just following in the footsteps of his idol, Joe Stalin's best friend FDR. Barry's fiscal policy is the same as FDR's. And Obamacare like social security is also unconstitutional. Am I the only one that wants to scream or puke when a so-called conservative says I want to save social security?

I just wanted to let you know I agree with the first six comments.

Ct-tom: It is hard for me to believe that the guy from Tax Masters actually attracts any customers. But I guess the cost of running those 250 commercials a day prove that some truths are stranger than fiction.

wjm: After watching all those boring commercials for gold, I would have been greatly relieved to see some pretty girls, cute kids or fuzzy creatures, singing some silly songs. I wouldn't have bought an ice cream cone from any of those hucksters.

I have to agree with mmccrindle: in '03 & '04 I spent ime in the Persian Gulf, East Africa & Pakistan and can remember emailing my wife my observation that Islam is the purest form of facism that I'd ever come across in my life of much traveling and that had Hitler has such fanatical followers we might not have defeated him.

The only thing worse than listening to the ads on Fox News is listening to the Fox News channel on XM/Sirius Satellite radio. There are EVEN MORE ads for gold merchants than on the TV channel, and the rebroadcast only plays the audio content, so when a graphic is discussed, there are no contextual clues.

When I made the reference to the first six comments, those were the only ones posted. It seems that two more were posted while I was busy writing my own comments. I didn't want Bob and Rod to think I was excluding them. But I can't figure out how Howard went from sixth to eighth position.

As for the gold commercials, as I have written elsewhere, the flaw in their sales pitch is if gold prices are going to keep rising and greenbacks are going to be worthless, why don't all these people just hang on to their gold? Are they running a business or a charity?

Ha! I just laughed out loud when you mentioned the gold commercials! I've thought the SAME thing while watching those. It seems that you know you've made the "big time" as a conservative talk show host when you're hauking gold commercials. That Rosland one is the WORST! I change the channel when it comes on.

Burt, in your opening paragraph you mention the five most annoying people on Fox. I have not watched Fox for a long time now, but I do remember those Liberal dolts. They always made me sick, I could not stand them. Alan I called a flat tire, Bob I called the pickle, Juan I called the black guy, Geraldo I called the Hispanic inferiority complex, and Leslie did not rate a moniker but I suppose liberal lesbian might have served well.

Here is my assesment of the republicans at this time.

In my opinion, it will come down to Mit or Newt. This because Liberals controll the MSM, and liberals "moderate" the debates. Liberals use this power of the wagon master and the ramrod to shape our perspective of our own republican candidates and we, like mesmerized dolts prefer the ones they choose for us.

Michelle Backmann was the most conservative of the lot, but we failed to back her. Perry was the next most conservative with a splendid resume as governor but we did not back him. The liberals want our republican candidates to be the most liberal and we allow them to "lord" over us.

Understanding this, the choice between Newt and Mit for me, comes down to real world experience. People who never work in the real world live with their heads in the clouds, never have they, nor do they, walk on the face of the earth, never do they come back down to earth.

The mindset born of this unreality, of this academican world display a proclivity for both the folly of illusion and a dereliction of responsibilty.

Because Mit has some real world experience while Newt has none that I am aware of, given the choice of Mit or Newt, Mit becomes my choice.

It is time we conservatives get out from under the Liberal MSMs whip and choose our candidates our way, not the liberals way.

Lastly, I would vote for Bozo the clown over Barac Obama. Bozo maybe a dolt, but Obama is on a mission to destroy America, he is ruining America intentionally, and deliberately.

Nobama 201, vote republican. Thank you.

PDK: For what it's worth, Leslie Marshall is married. To a man, I hasten to add. And while I'd hate to be thought a nit-picker--or in this case, a Mitt-picker--Romney actually spells his first name with two "t's." But I agree with you. Especially after three years of the ex-community organizer, I am more than ready for someone who has actually had to deal with the multitude of bureaucratic obstacles presented by the federal government.

Burt thanks for the update, I do sort of remember Leslie the liberal, she had a talk show in LA.

Back in 2008 some religious guy, Preist or Pastor, something like that, gave his own one hour interview with both John McCain and Barac. I only saw snippets after the fact, however John came off looking stellar, while Barac looked like the dolt he is. The liberals were momentarily shocked and hurt.

This is the type of stuff conservatives and the republicans need. Someone like Perry who does not do well in debates should not find himself anchored to such a format. He ran a Governorship with positive results while Obama, who looks good in debates, has crusaded his mission to destroy America, but will not come clean about his mission.

My choice would still be Perry/Backmann, but they have been made into buffoons by the liberal MSM and the liberal talking heads.

Personally I would prefer to separate out into two mutually exclusive countries for our two mutually exclusive ideologies, one mature and realistic, the other immature and illusory, but I stand alone.

Since, therefore, we shall remain as one country, we conservatives must take back responsibility for selecting our own republican candidates.

It is possible that Americas handwritting is on the wall. It is possible that King Baracs America has, like King Belshazzars Babylon, been weighed and found wanting.

Nobama 2012, vote republican. Thank you.

All,

I'm late to the party, as usual, but I wonder if I might add "at the end of the day" to the "parroted ad nauseum until I want to scream and pull my own teeth out" list of catch phrases?

PDK: I know Fox identifies Ms. Marshall as an L.A. talk show host, but I've never heard her and I don't know anyone else here in L.A. who ever heard of her until O'Reilly started giving her a platform for reasons beyond my ken. She's not even blonde and good-looking, which generally seems to be the motivation at Fox.

PDK: I have actually written an article along the lines you mention, but it will probably be a while until it's posted here. Feel free to visit BurtPrelutsky.com and find "The Divided States of America."

Norge & Jim: I agree about your offerings. "With all due respect" remains a bugaboo of mine.

Heck, if I had bought a ton of gold at $50.00 per ounce, back in the 1970's, and could now maybe get folks to buy it at nearly two grand per ounce, I would do nutty commercials on tv, too. Wouldn't you?

One has to wonder if the hideous quality of commercial sponsors that hold up Fox News reflect solely on them or on the overall state of the economy. Their sponsors could hardly get worse, or more repetitive and that does say something about how little demand there is for Fox New commercial air-time but one has to be hungry for conservative TV broadcasting or one could not tolerate the garbage they have the nerve to transmit. Soooo low brow, so aimed at the stupid knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers that reflect the intelligence of those who target them with commercials. I suppose the decent commercial sponsors appear on the networks, but then who can tolerate their programming? It seems there's just no way to avoid crap.

Burt - The opening paragraph of this piece convinces me that you are my twin by a different Mother.

The 'Liberal' five commentators that you mentioned turn my stomach so that I have almost worn the letters "MUTE" from the button on my remote. Colmes and Williams are by far the worst in my opinion. As water carriers they excel. Rivera could not even earn a job with the 'National Inquirer' he is so pathetic.

On to commercials - agree there also, and "Let me add" - ANY commercial touting an item for $19.99 or less (plus shipping and handling). There must be, altho I have not found it as yet, a Federal Truth in Advertising Law that exempts an item offered for less than $20, even if it is a POS. Often the S&H costs multiple times the $19.99 - so you are stuck with it.

And as to 'least favorite expressions', when O'Butthead starts with "Let me be perfectly clear . . " ARGGGGGGG - that is code for "The next words out of my mouth will be the most outrageous lie that you have ever heard".

Well, there - all is off my chest. Now if I could only stop screaming at the plasma display when Debbie Wasserman-Shultz tries to tell me how bad all Conservatives are, my dogs would stay in the same room as me.
