Some Light Bulbs Are Duds
· Monday, February 20, 2012
When I heard Newt Gingrich seriously suggest that America, a nation perched on the edge of economic collapse because of Obama's sending our debt soaring from $10 trillion to $16 trillion, should consider setting up a colony on the moon -- and, furthermore, granting statehood when the colony population reached 13,000 -- it occurred to me that "lunacy" is a word derived from Luna, a Roman deity who personified the moon.
When people insist that Gingrich would make a great president, they generally emphasize how many ideas he generates on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. What they overlook is that a great many of his brainstorms are all wet.
In the old days, whenever someone in the cartoons came up with an idea, the cartoonist would illustrate the event by showing a large light bulb floating over the character's head. If I were drawing a strip called "Newt," his ideas would be represented by those CFL twisty bulbs that not only provide very little illumination, but contain mercury, meaning that disposing of them is about as hazardous as trying to unload nuclear waste.
I'm not saying that all of Mr. Gingrich's ideas are toxic, but it's not as if the ones that aren't are all that splendiferous. He's merely a politician, after all, not a scientist trying to find a cure for cancer.
The nice thing about being president is that you don't have to be the fountainhead of all ideas; the president has access to every good idea floating around in America. But because of Newt's narcissism, which I don't find all that different from Obama's, I suspect that Gingrich doesn't have too much interest in anyone else's ideas and far too much love and respect for any and all that happen to spring from his own head.
Speaking of the egotist-in-chief, what I find so confounding about Barack Obama isn't that he sticks to his guns in spite of one failure after another, but that so many Democrats still blindly support him. Understand, I don't expect liberals to turn on him because he continues to promote the redistribution of wealth. After all, that's what he promised to do as a candidate in 2008 and is one of the few campaign promises he has kept.
But when, during his State of the Union address, he had the gall to say that it's not fair that Warren Buffet's secretary, Debbie Bosanek, pays more in income taxes than billionaire Buffet, I don't recall hearing any of the Party faithful call him on it. As we all know, tax rate is not the same thing as tax obligation. Even Ms. Bosanek, whom Obama had planted in the royal box with Michelle, knows she doesn't write a bigger check to the IRS than her boss. We also know, as does Obama, that folks like Buffet and Romney already paid income taxes on the money they earned at a rate of 35% before getting to invest whatever was left and then pay an additional 15% on those capital gains. The IRS, a gang of ghouls who would cheerfully pry the gold from the teeth of the deceased, then gets a third crack at their money in the form of death taxes.
The notion that rich people don't pay their fair share of taxes is such a blatant lie that only that half of the population that pays nothing, while in some cases collecting "refunds," would be hypocritical enough to turn it into their favorite mantra.
One of the other gargantuan lies that leapt off the TV screen during Obama's address was that, thanks to him, the U.S. has greater influence and garners more respect around the world than ever before. The idea that Obama could deliver that knee-slapper with a straight face, and that his puppets in Congress could compound the joke by giving him a standing ovation, suggests he just might be able to reverse Reagan's career arc and end up as the president of SAG.
The fact of the matter is that he has about as much respect and influence on the world stage as Dennis Kucinich.
Otherwise, isn't it safe to assume that the 2016 Olympic Games would be taking place in Chicago, and not Rio?

Good post Burt.
On Gingrich, first and foremost he has the smell of liberal. He drips with the doltism of liberal stupidity, he is an academician, he suffers narcissism, and most important to me, like all true liberal politicians, he has never had a job in the real world. This predisposes one to folly and to a deriliction to duty and responsibilty. I would like to think that with Obamas anti American Messiahnic philosophy and its massive destruction to America that the independent terms of President and responsibility are now realized to be a lockstep tandem team.
Gingrich is talking about a moonbase but we have not secured our Southern border, what a joke. If America wants an out of this world state let us recognize the state of Mexifornia. And BTW, where is the money for such an enterprize coming from? We are broke and in debt big time.
I believe the term luncy comes from the way a full moon affects the psyche of man and beast, and no republican candidate seems to display as much lunacy as Newt.
On Obama, the wrecking ball of the good ediface America, his administration has recently signed over to Russia and Putin 7 strategic resource laden Alasken Islands, including 10s of thousands of oil rich sea beds. This according to Joe Miller up there in Alaska.
If Obama and his anti American team, the O team, Obama, Holder and Napalitano remain in office for 4 more years, Americas furture will be the darkest since Valley Forge.
People we may go under.
One and done. Nobama 2012, vote republican. Thank you.

Burt,
Always a great morning when your post is up and at 'em!
Funny you should mention pulling gold ftom teeth, if George Soros reads this he'll be able to look back on the good 'ol days of reaping baubles from dead Jews for his Nazi masters. Ah, the good life!
Soros has done such a grand job of installing a messiah complex into his stooge-in-chief that given a teleprompter Obama oozes confidence to the point of compelling his liberal breatheren to bestow adulation and standing ovations. It can really be a Kodak moment.
Times like that I get a light bulb over my head but must quickly dismiss such ideas as being uncivilized.

Burt a few thoughts from der goot doktor:
I may be wrong here, but was not goal of NASA was to eventually start a colony? After a few moon landings, it's as if the US public got bored and said "been there done that" But I think, that the space shuttles were part of the program as well. This is to say that they were the next phase in that goal by ferrying up needed materials to build a half-way point that would allow for the final phase that of actually building of a base and in the end a small colony. Perhaps I had read to much Sci-fi. Either way it did not happen as the costs became prohibitive, and interest waned to the point of non-existent. IF any such move is ever occur, it will probably come from the private sectors. However, I feel it is at this point much further off in the future than we can imagine at this time. Not impossible mind you, just highly improbable.
As for Newt, well what can one say? Well one can say, closet (at best) Liberal, globalist, tree-hugging wacko type. Yes he's got a sharp wit, and a quick mouth, both of which would get him in trouble.
IRS - Bloodsuckers, who honest to God believe that the money one has worked for belongs to the government. I bet that thought is drummed into their heads from day one. Ask ten different agents the same technical question and you'll get 10 different answers. The tax codes are so complex and convoluted that even THEY have no clue as to what is in it.
Dennis Kucinich - Loon, but, we already knew that, hence the reason he's not a president.
Buffet's personal secretary - probably makes more than the entire secretary pool of congress, combined. So she pays at a higher rate big deal, she makes a heck of a lot more too. And do not think for one minute that she has not personally benefited from her boss's decisions on stocks etc. Can we say insider knowledge? I put her in the 1%, or just slightly under, maybe the .9999999%
Question - Those receiving help from the government whether it be in the form of welfare, unemployment benefits etc, are they required to file a 1040, by law? I was under the impression that they are not considered income and thereby non-taxable, so WHY, if that is so, should they be ALLOWED to file? As you had mentioned not only are they receiving goodies from the tax payer, but likewise are reaping the benefits of a refund for something they haven't even paid into in the first place. Must be nice to be a liberal politician, and so easy to buy votes too.
PDK - the treaty was actually written around the early 90s, I believe it was, but, was never really ratified by either side. Probably because at that point in time the Evil Empire so no reason to do so; maybe the knowledge of those resources was not available. Doesn't matter anyway, PREZBO, in his infinite wisdom has seen fit to give them away via Executive fiat.

Burt,
You've posted a pretty good "Newt in a Nutshell" assessment of Gingritch here. I, too, have a hundred lightbulb ideas a day, but possess the ability, (or cynicism), to think through them and eliminate the 97 idiotic ones BEFORE blurting them out publicly, lest I look like a lunatic to the people around me. Narcissists don't seem to have that built-in circuit breaker, and so end up in Washington or Hollywood. You are right that Newt and Obama are more alike than either would want to admit.
p.s. - Is "splendiferous" for real or just a really good Burt word?

Steve
That Newt is a narcissist and egomaniac on the scale of Ohdrama is clear for any observant person to see. Newt has passion, which some people love, but he also frequently inserts his feet in his mouth and allows his mouth to outrun his brain. Not a quality ideally suited for a POTUS.
Just as Newt promises a balanced budget AND new Moon Colonies... I find those promises as IMPOSSIBLE as the promises made by Ohdrama in 2008 such as Tax Cuts for 95% of Americans AND to cut the deficits in half by the end of his first term. Ohdrama also promised that he would get American OUT of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. BEFORE that will happen, wars will have to be started in other locations.
The other promise Ohdrama made, which Newt could help with, is to close Gitmo. If Newt were able to build the Moon Colony, he could use THAT as the holding pen for enemy combatants and assorted Americans that need to be detained "out of sight" as enemies of the state Leviathan. With Patriot Act and NDAA extended, we could move more pesky and dangerous dissidents out of America to the Moon where they'll be out of the way.
Of course, when Prez Newt presses ahead the war with Iran (which Romney would also do), they'll need a place to hold the POWs...so the Moon Colony would be a nifty location.
Of course, we all know that the Moon Colony idea was for the benefit of the Space Coast and the Florida audience in front of which that idea bubbled out. Other ideas may take precedence when they might win more votes and more appplause in other states.

Burt,
Stick a fork in Speaker Newt. He's done and he has only himself to blame. He goes back and forth on every issue and always seems to come out on the liberal side. The way I see it, the only good thing he has ever done is carry on what President Reagan started with the turnaround of the economy. We did have a surplus when Speaker Newt was replaced as Speaker which we will not see again for a long, long time. In the end he leans too far to the left for my taste. The sooner he and Ron Paul are out of the way the better.
As for our current President, and the sorriest excuse for one that we have ever had, it is trully amazing how there was absolutely no opposition drummed up to run against him by the Democrats. Every one of them are under his spell and that is truly frightening.
The IRS should be completely disbanded. There should only be one type of simple federal tax. Either a one time income tax that is pulled from your paycheck, a one time national sales tax, etc. Investments should never be taxed, and the death tax should deffinately be done away with. We have double, triple, and even quadrupal taxation at this time which is completely Unconstitutional. No one should be punished for being successful and smart with their money. The other side of this is that tax revenue should not be used for anything other than what the Constitution says it is to be used for. And, stop the deductions already. The government needs to collect what is truly everyones share and stop giving money to the lazy.

Burt,
I'm sorry. I do not have anywhere near even one million dollars. I am just a man who puts his boots on and goes to work everyday like every other hard working American who do not expect the government to take care of them. It's just common sense. There are certain things such as national defense that the U.S. Constitution authorizes the federal government to fund and I realize that money has to come from somewhere. However it is supposed to be a Governent By The People and For The People. What we have is far from that. Obama has done a pretty good job of turning it into a Government for the King.
My wife does ask me why I don't just become a politician and run for office whenever I complain about wasteful spending and the overstepping of the government on every level. Unfortuanately a friend of mine took the advice of his neighbors and friends, ran for local office, and won. He is a conservative and he is finding out just how much of a minority that is in the political landscape these days. He says every time he leaves a council meeting he feels like it's him against the establishment. He keeps on trying though. It's tough when the rest of the council has their hand in everyones pockets so that they can stack the deck against you.

David, I too believe in NASA. I too would like both a moon and Martian colony but now is not the time. IMHO, here is what the time currently is for:
Our balance sheet,we are now pressing 16 trillion dollars in debt, that is more than Americas GNP for an entire year.
Americas unsecured, unprotected and open southern border, its resultant illegalism of a people, whom because of their high numbers feel not the desire to assimilate into American culture, but prefer instead to embrace the reconquista ideology of the American SW, Aztland.
Islam is the most dangerous insanity on the planet. They are a people who worship their inferiority that they may pursue their superiority which can only come at the expense of others liberty.
Anyone who overlooks these realities should not even be considered for the job of POTUS. To overlook these hugh problems in favor of moon colony ideas for the present time is sheer lunacy. Thank you.

BTW- Those car batteries are about $8,000.00 and those solar cells on the roof stop working after about 2 years....)

The part of the "rich people" lie that bothers me, is that whenever the politicians start talking about raising taxes on the "rich", my paycheck gets smaller. I make less than $50K a year, and I'm definitely NOT rich, but my taxes go up nevertheless.
The politicians know that there's almost no ready cash in raising taxes on the "rich". I don't know the actual statistics, but I'd bet there's more revenue in a 2% tax hike on the middle than there would be in a 20% hike on the "rich".

I agree with most all who have commented. With respect to space exploration, we need to ascertain whether there is any point in establishing lunar (lunatic?) bases on planets that have no water, no heat, no gold or silver that we know of, and take two weeks going 250,000 mph to get to. How about we just look at the wonder of the skies, marvel at God's greatness, and thank Him that we are Americans. I, too am comparatively poor, but do all I can to make a living, and do not take government dole. I have a son who is legally blind, but he made it through college, and got a master's degree, and never took a dime of government money. If he can do that, those who are populating these United States with illegitimate children can find their way to the already-in-place WIC offices and get free contraceptives. Oh, I forgot, they are too lazy to even go get free stuff.

Todays posting perpetuates the misconseptions of
CFL's vs incandescent lamps. CFL's are rated by watts: 13w x 4 = 52w incand. 23w x 4 = 92w incand
27w x 4 = 108w incand. Lamp color is very important
however, it is rated in degrees kelvin. Here are
3 of the standard 2700k, 3500, 4200k. The higher the number the whiter the lamps color. Many of the
first CFL's were only avaliable in 2700k, tooo yellow for most people. I use 3500k or 4200K, but
again the general public does not know this or even understand what those numbers mean. As far as mercury content is concerned, the amount used varies depending upon the lamp wattage. However, the amount of mercury in the CFL's is miniscule. The white powder in the lamps is made of rare earth
phosphors which are used to create the color of the
lamp lumen output. Yes, they should be recycled, as should all lamps, incandescent, hologen, CFL's
metal halide, high and low pressure sodium and even the new LED's. LED's are a story for another time.
We all should recyle our waste products, especially
our lamps, what ever the source of the light output
may be. Some of our nations electrical wholesalers
have provisions for the proper disposal of some or
all of these lamps. If not, at least they can let the consumer know where to recycle their lamps. And one last item, if you really want to reduce your energy consumption at home or work there are
many, many LED lamps and fixtures available. They
consume the least amount of electricity and have the longest lamp life.

Archie: Let me put it this way. In the midst of a primary campaign, I don't know why Newt is spending time talking about moon colonies except that he wants us all to sit in awe of every notion that winds up in his head. If it's something that will be financed by the private sector, and not the American taxpayer, I really don't think those folks need Newt to tell them how to spend their money. On the other hand, being cynical where politicians are concerned, when a presidential candidate starts ruminating in this fashion, I have to suspect that, given the opportunity, Newt would spend tax dollars on the project.

If the Bama Lama Bing Bong wasn't such a narcisstic, self-righteous dolt that only commands the respect of the 'Meatheads of America' he could definitely be the front runner in the Antichrist catagory of dark personalities in hisotry.
What he does win though is how the Antichrist will appear on the world scene as a political leader, to meteorically rise to the arch villain for all times. Look how many people were sucked into his camp without questioning his pedigree. What the Bam did nationally, the Antichrist will do internationally in a supernatural sort of way as only a person empowered by Satan can.
