Helen Thomas Retires, and Not a Moment Too Soon
· Tuesday, June 8, 2010
Anti-Semite: "a person who discriminates against or is prejudiced or hostile toward Jews."
Some prejudices are tolerated by elites in this country. Examples: One can regularly smear political conservatives as know-nothings; Evangelical Christians as believers in a fantasy; Roman Catholics for their church's stand against abortion and birth control; and Republicans as greedy people who care only about profit and power. Bill Maher regularly serves up a menu of these prejudices on his HBO program. Comedy Central is working on a cartoon series mocking Jesus Christ, but altered a sketch featuring the Prophet Muhammad for fear of a Muslim backlash. Some prejudices must be controlled.
One prejudice seems to be gaining a certain cachet. Like a volcano, it occasionally erupts to reveal what has been churning below the surface. That prejudice is anti-Semitism and the exploding volcano that set it off is Helen Thomas, the longtime "senior" White House correspondent for United Press International and more recently a columnist for Hearst Newspapers. That is until Monday, when Ms. Thomas, bombarded by criticism over her recent statements regarding Jews in Palestine, relinquished her front-row seat at presidential press briefings and announced a hasty retirement.
Ms. Thomas' latest trouble began on May 27 at a White House ceremony marking Jewish Heritage Month. Rabbi David Nesenoff saw Thomas and asked her opinion about recent developments in the Middle East. Thomas, who is of Lebanese descent, said the Jews in Israel should "go home to Germany, Poland and the United States."
Should the "Palestinians" go home to Jordan, which is where many of them are from? Where would Thomas like to send the 1 million Jews from Arab countries, or the Ethiopian Jews? Perhaps Thomas should "go home" to Lebanon. Besides, the Jews are home.
After her remarks went viral on the Internet, Thomas issued one of those statements that could have come from a politician she has covered: "I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon." Cue "The Age of Aquarius" music.
A generous person might forgive a one-off "slip of the tongue," but Helen Thomas has a long history of questioning and opposing anything Israel does in its own defense. While not all criticism of Israel should be translated as anti-Semitism, Thomas' rhetoric over the years seems to betray a deep-seated hatred of Jews.
During the Israeli battle with the terrorist organization Hamas in Gaza in 2008-2009, Thomas was interviewed by NPR and, according to Yid With Lid, a Weblog of commentary on Jewish issues, compared the Israeli Defense Force action to Nazi Germany. That is like blaming African Americans for police brutality during the civil rights movement.
Has Thomas forgotten that many of the Jews she wants to "go home" to Germany and Poland had relatives who died in the Holocaust because they could not escape from those countries? One -- but by no means the only -- reason Israel was reconstituted as a nation in 1948 was so that Jews would have a place to go should their existence again be threatened. Jews also have a long-established and legitimate relationship with not only the land in which Israelis now live, but also a much wider geographical, cultural and religious heritage, which they have relinquished in repeated bids for peace.
I have known and sometimes admired Helen Thomas for many years, but every professional -- be it an athlete, or a journalist -- needs to recognize when it's time to go. And, thankfully, Helen Thomas knew it was time to go. Most employers would not want to be associated with a prejudiced employee, now Hearst Corporation won't have to.

Helen Thomas has long been a blow hard of moderate to lower intelligence that spouted nothing but the most liberal party line. She has often opined against this country and its principles. It is long, long, loonngg past time that she left the field to (hopefully) a more objective reporter.

She's gone because of bad timing, Obama and his coterie have chosen to undermine Israel less ostentatiously. If George Bush was still president the media would have come to her defense, saying she made a statement that needed saying, that her courage was a sign that it was time to quit coddling Israel. This time crap hit the fan and it splashed on Obama, that's a no-no among the members of the White House Press Corp. They are vetted before being allowed in the emperor's circle and obeisance is taken for granted. Bad Helen!

Helen Thomas and her anti-semitic views are just the tip of the iceburg in manifesting the hatred of God's chosen people by all those who are biblically ignorant of the history, covenants, etc of the nation of Israel. This is just part of the fullfillment of prophecy. There will NEVER be peace in Israel OR the world until Messiah JESUS returns to reign on His throne in JERUSALEM.

Well I'll be; she is of Lebanese descent. And here I thought that anti-semitism came mostly from the middle east.

Aren't Arabs also Semitic people? This means Arab bashing is also anti-Semitic. Ms Thomas is a Lebanese American, so many of her critics are anti-Semitic.
Also....For the record, the Jews were not the only victims of Nazi Germany.
Smart people wish to hear all sides to the story.

Judy, let's face it - sometimes ugly inside is reflected on the outside. She has a mean ugly heart, and used her position to spread her views, rather than report the facts, as so many journalists do these days. Sad but true, there will be another one just like her to fill that seat.

I do not wish her ill -- I just wish she had "retired" uyears ago. Free speech does not mean that people can do nothing but spew hatred. If these words had been uttered by a conservative American there would be an out-poring of indignation. Now she has the "free press" coming to her defense. She wants to send Jews back to Poland and Germany where millions were murdered. I once attended a party where I met a woman who had been in a death camp in Germany. She still had the numbers etched on her forearm. It was chilling. Let us all remember that Jesus was a Jew and he was crucified.

Actually - it is sad that political views are routinely excoriated as 'racist' when they run counter to powerful, organized groups. If Ms Thomas had suggested that the Palestinians go home to Jordan (as the author suggests), she would probably have been applauded; she certainly wouldn't have been forced into 'retirement'. You can dislike her political views and wish her gone for that, but I am tired of the endless conflation of political opinion with racism simply as a way of demonizing ideas not liked.

Judy,
What's all this stuff about "free speech", I and anyone else in this country have the right to call anyone anything anytime. Ugly is what ugly does.

First off, I too am of Lebanese descent, but I am Pro-Isreal. Second of all she cannot be Anti-Semitic because she, like me and like most Middle Easterners are technically Semites, even though the negative connotation generally refers to Jews. She is however an ignorant bigot who should have been forced to leave a long time ago. Long live Isreal, the fates of Isreal and the US are closely tied. Lets not ever forget that.

Helen Thomas is a perfect example of why one should get out of the game while they are still still ahead. In my humble opinion she has been making remarks that have not made sense for quite awhile. Now she's really done it and it was terrible.

First off the 'predication' for Israel to be placed (1948) in the middle of the Arab world is purportedly the Bible. I wonder, is that the same Bible the Jews want banned from every institution in this country? We can mention the Bible if it satifies the desires of the Jews but not otherwise?
For those of you who are not aware, 3 days BEFORE 9/11, at a legally convened and sanctioned United Nations Conference in Durban, South Africa, the United Nations General Assembly voted 170 to 2 to sanction "Israel as a terrorist nation for what she has done to the Palestinians over the past 70 years." The only nations to vote against the resolution were the US and Israel. People outside of this country know what is going on; the Jew press in the US feeds us horsepuckey.
