The Meaning of Brown
· Friday, January 22, 2010
WASHINGTON -- On Jan. 14, five days before the Massachusetts special election, President Obama was in full bring-it-on mode as he rallied House Democrats behind his health care reform. "If Republicans want to campaign against what we've done by standing up for the status quo and for insurance companies over American families and businesses, that is a fight I want to have."
The bravado lasted three days. When Obama campaigned in Boston on Jan. 17 for Obamacare supporter Martha Coakley, not once did he mention the health care bill. When your candidate is sinking, you don't throw her a millstone.
After Coakley's defeat, Obama pretended that the real cause was a generalized anger and frustration "not just because of what's happened in the last year or two years, but what's happened over the last eight years."
Let's get this straight: The antipathy to George W. Bush is so enduring and powerful that ... it just elected a Republican senator in Massachusetts? Why, the man is omnipotent.
And the Democrats are delusional: Scott Brown won by running against Obama not Bush. He won by brilliantly nationalizing the race, running hard against the Obama agenda, most notably Obamacare. Killing it was his No. 1 campaign promise.
Bull's-eye. An astonishing 56 percent of Massachusetts voters, according to Rasmussen, called health care their top issue. In a Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates poll, 78 percent of Brown voters said their vote was intended to stop Obamacare. Only a quarter of all voters in the Rasmussen poll cited the economy as their top issue, nicely refuting the Democratic view that Massachusetts was just the usual anti-incumbent resentment you expect in bad economic times.
Brown ran on a very specific, very clear agenda. Stop health care. Don't Mirandize terrorists. Don't raise taxes; cut them. And no more secret backroom deals with special interests.
These deals -- the Louisiana purchase, the Cornhusker kickback -- had engendered a national disgust with the corruption and arrogance of one-party rule. The final straw was the union payoff -- in which labor bosses smugly walked out of the White House with a five-year exemption from a ("Cadillac") health insurance tax Democrats were imposing on the 92 percent of private-sector workers who are not unionized.
The reason both wings of American liberalism -- congressional and mainstream media -- were so surprised at the force of anti-Democratic sentiment is that they'd spent Obama's first year either ignoring or disdaining the clear early signs of resistance: the tea-party movement of the spring and the town-hall meetings of the summer. With characteristic condescension, they contemptuously dismissed the protests as the mere excrescences of a redneck, retrograde, probably racist rabble.
You would think lefties could discern a proletarian vanguard when they see one. Yet they kept denying the reality of the rising opposition to Obama's social democratic agenda when summer turned to fall and Virginia and New Jersey turned Republican in the year's two gubernatorial elections.
The evidence was unmistakable: Independents, who in 2008 had elected Obama, swung massively against the Democrats: dropping 16 points in Virginia, 21 in New Jersey. On Tuesday, it was even worse: Independents, who had gone 2-to-1 Republican in Virginia and New Jersey, now went 3-to-1 Republican in hyper-blue Massachusetts. Nor was this an expression of the more agitated elements who vote in obscure low-turnout elections. The turnout on Tuesday was the highest for any nonpresidential Massachusetts election in 20 years.
Democratic cocooners will tell themselves that Coakley was a terrible candidate who even managed to diss Curt Schilling. True, Brown had Schilling. But Coakley had Obama. When the bloody sock beats the presidential seal -- of a man who had them swooning only a year ago -- something is going on beyond personality.
That something is substance -- political ideas and legislative agendas. Democrats, if they wish, can write off their Massachusetts humiliation to high unemployment, to Coakley or, the current favorite among sophisticates, to generalized anger. That implies an inchoate, unthinking lashing-out at whoever happens to be in power -- even at your liberal betters who are forcing on you an agenda that you can't even see is in your own interest.
Democrats must so rationalize, otherwise they must take democracy seriously, and ask themselves: If the people really don't want it, could they possibly have a point?
"If you lose Massachusetts and that's not a wake-up call," said moderate -- and sentient -- Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana, "there's no hope of waking up."
I say: Let them sleep.

Hey, has anyone ever heard Obama use the word "fight" when referring to America's real enemies? Or does he only use the word on citizens, journalists and politicians who disagree with him?

Alex, that's an interesting observation, one I tend to agree w/ and will look for. I think your right.
Yes, great analysis and spot on Mr. Krauthammer. Interesting note, I think for the most part the GOP leadership has been very restrained on their response, I do not see a ton of 'in your face' - unlike we saw Nov 08.

Democrats don't want to serve the citizens, they think they own us. This is the fatal conceit of progressives. They just don't understand freedom or a republic. They are certain they know best, and they are determined to impose their will. They don't know what we want, they don't care what we want, they disdain what we want.

I agree with Alex as well. President Obama can't find the word "fight" when referring to terrorists or murderous tyrants trying to get their hands on nuclear weapons, but give him a Republican opponent and he thinks he's Rocky Balboa.
Mr Krauthammer has done another excellent job articulating the reasons for what we see in the news. Those of us here in MA who watched that race go from a 30-point Coakley lead to a 9-point Brown advantage know that almost none of the shift had anything to do with either candidate. Many voters said they had never voted for a Republican before in their lives, but were frightened of Obama's radical agenda. Many others said they had not voted in years, but wanted to prevent Obamacare from passing because it's going to be a nightmare.
Coakley ran a foolish campaign, true. But in MA the Democrat can do almost anything short of eating babies and the unions, media and Democratic political machine will guarantee an over-the-top win. The fact Brown could even make it close was an outright scandal for the Left -- for Obama in particular -- and the fact he beat them bloody at the ballot box proves Americans reject Obama's radical policies.
Naturally, the first thing Obama & Co did was blame Coakley. Except when they were blaming George W. Bush. They even tried to blame Haiti. That's all right. I agree with Mr Krauthammer. I hope they stay asleep. Or more to the point, I hope they keep talking. KEEP TALKING, LIBERALS! Keep talking...

Agreed - let them sleep.
Press secretary Gibbs' comments on Fox News Sunday betrayed their attitude - paraphrasing here - well, that's what Brown CAMPAIGNED ON, but that's not why the voters elected him. The liberal idiot-savants always know better, all you have to do is ask them. Actually, they'll tell you without your asking. Would that President Obama fight for jobs and against terrorists with the same zeal as he proposes to do against evil bankers, Wall Street, insurance companies, oil companies, that is, those who are providing jobs and generating tax revenue to feed the bloody Washington, DC, beast.

As usual Dr. Krauthammer gets it right! I was a little disappointed that he referred to "Democratic cocooners" instead of Democrat cocooners and also referred to "Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh" instead of Democrat Sen. Evan Bayn. I would remind my learned gentleman that the Democrats are far from being democratic.

Mr. Krauthammer,
Excellent article, as always, and you have informed the American people as to the facts as they exist. Obama has filled his cabinet and surrounded himself with like-minded individuals who agree with him. He refuses to accept any criticizm regardless of how valuable it might be. No one can hide from the truth forever. Sooner or later, and I hope it is sooner, Obama will have to face the fact that what his administration has accomplished to date would not fill someone's hat, much less feed his family.

Amen to that Chuck! Let em sleep!!!
One thing needs be said over and over before November: "Rome wasn't too big to fail and neither is the USA" and witness the greatest turnaround since 92
There's only one problem. Taking democracy seriously on our side too. Winning makes you responsible for the mess (not that BHO will ever get that). So... What to do? Difficult decisions will await a new Congress and whatever they do will cause pain. Surgery hurts but if the patient is not to die, it is necessary.
Lastly, I'm not sure liberal democrats are democratic or liberal. Isn't the debate really between Socialism and Liberalism, the one being the notion that a collective decision need be made about what's best and the other being that people at liberty are best disposed to decide what's best for them with government seeking policies that do not infringe on the liberties of anyone at all?

That's a good question. Liberal Democrats are neither. It's just a word game they play to give people false impressions. There are ways to help clarify and deny them the ability to mislead.
For one thing, recognize that "liberal" in the classical sense, as the Founding Fathers understood the term, is not what is meant by Liberal -- as in Progressive, Statist, Socialist, Collectivist. The former is about liberty and freedom, the latter is about central control over the masses. That's why we distinguish the classical liberal with a lowercase "L" and the modern Progressive Liberal with an uppercase "L."
Nor are they Democratic. Witness Progressive groups like ACORN, the SDS, LaRaza and other groups that actively engage in election fraud. ACORN has been caught at it dozens of times. In close elections, Liberal Democrats in MA, FLA and other states now routinely attempt to get military absentee ballots thrown out because they know most of them will be for the GOP candidates. President Obama has tried to subvert the process of Democracy in passing his Socialized medicine scheme, and now Barney Frank is demanding an end to the filibuster in the Senate (Frank isn't even a senator) because he finds it inconvenient. Witness the shameful manipulation of the rules in MA when Ted Kennedy took ill, as the legislature changed the law so the (Republican) governor couldn't appoint a replacement, then changed it back when a Democrat governor was elected. The people screamed so the legislature allowed a special election, but insisted the governor appoint a "temporary" replacement to be Obama's 60th vote until the election. It was a disgusting mockery of Democracy.
And when Honduras' President Zelaya violated that country's Constitution and remain in office beyond his legal term, Obama sided with him over the Honduran Supreme Court. When Zelaya declared himself a proud Communist and admirer of dictator-for-life Hugo Chavez, Obama strongly urged Honduras to re-seat Zelaya. He ordered Sec-State Clinton to impose economic sanctions on Honduras. Only under intense public pressure from Conservatives who knew the real story, did Obama finally change course. Then he acted as though he'd supported the legal President of Honduras the whole time, which was a shameless lie. He didn't support freedom, liberty and Democracy; he tried to help Zelaya thwart it.
No, Liberal Democrats are simply hiding behind an Orwellian subterfuge in which they are really un-liberal and anti-Democratic. Everything they claim to believe is a lie.

Thanks Michael. Exactly what I meant. I don't think it was anti-democratic to try to socialize medicine through the Congress (it can always be privatized later if the democratic process is not damaged in the process) but certainly there were profoundly dishonorable things done to get those votes. Those bribes were certainly conduct unbecoming at least and perhaps someone should look into the rulebook regarding recalls and impeachment. In what way is exempting this or that state, these or those workers not grounds for impeachment or recall? And the dishonor brought to democracy - to the whole process - is a great danger. So is crony capitalism to the idea of a free market (and Mr. Bush deserves his share of blame for that idiotic stunt, the "bailout" nonsense).
People forget that classic liberalism begins with the liberty of the polity and the market. It began with the freeing of people to make contracts without royal patents and the like. The courts of Europe were a pecking order of obligations & payoffs which resemble two certain lewd acts now considered worthy to celebrate at annual parades.
But the main thing is not to let them off the hook now. Let them sleep. We should say until it hurts: "Rome, like America, wasn't built in a day but Rome, like America, wasn't too big to fail." That's the November run. Take back Congress!
