The Fruits of Weakness

· Friday, May 21, 2010

WASHINGTON -- It is perfectly obvious that Iran's latest uranium maneuver, brokered by Brazil and Turkey, is a ruse. Iran retains more than enough enriched uranium to make a bomb. And it continues enriching at an accelerated pace and to a greater purity (20 percent). Which is why the French foreign ministry immediately declared that the trumpeted temporary shipping of some Iranian uranium to Turkey will do nothing to halt Iran's nuclear program.

It will, however, make meaningful sanctions more difficult. America's proposed Security Council resolution is already laughably weak -- no blacklisting of Iran's central bank, no sanctions against Iran's oil and gas industry, no nonconsensual inspections on the high seas. Yet Turkey and Brazil -- both current members of the Security Council -- are so opposed to sanctions that they will not even discuss the resolution. And China will now have a new excuse to weaken it further.

But the deeper meaning of the uranium-export stunt is the brazenness with which Brazil and Turkey gave cover to the mullahs' nuclear ambitions and deliberately undermined U.S. efforts to curb Iran's program.

The real news is that already notorious photo: the president of Brazil, our largest ally in Latin America, and the prime minister of Turkey, for more than half a century the Muslim anchor of NATO, raising hands together with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the most virulently anti-American leader in the world.

That picture -- a defiant, triumphant take-that-Uncle-Sam -- is a crushing verdict on the Obama foreign policy. It demonstrates how rising powers, traditional American allies, having watched this administration in action, have decided that there's no cost in lining up with America's enemies and no profit in lining up with a U.S. president given to apologies and appeasement.

They've watched President Obama's humiliating attempts to appease Iran, as every rejected overture is met with abjectly renewed U.S. negotiating offers. American acquiescence reached such a point that the president was late, hesitant and flaccid in expressing even rhetorical support for democracy demonstrators who were being brutally suppressed and whose call for regime change offered the potential for the most significant U.S. strategic advance in the region in 30 years.

They've watched America acquiesce to Russia's re-exerting sway over Eastern Europe, over Ukraine (pressured by Russia last month into extending for 25 years its lease of the Black Sea naval base at Sevastopol) and over Georgia (Russia's de facto annexation of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is no longer an issue under the Obama "reset" policy).

They've watched our appeasement of Syria, Iran's agent in the Arab Levant -- sending our ambassador back to Syria even as it tightens its grip on Lebanon, supplies Hezbollah with Scuds, and intensifies its role as the pivot of the Iran-Hezbollah-Hamas alliance. The price for this ostentatious flouting of the U.S. and its interests? Ever more eager U.S. "engagement."

They've observed the administration's gratuitous slap at Britain over the Falklands, its contemptuous treatment of Israel, its undercutting of the Czech Republic and Poland, and its indifference to Lebanon and Georgia. And in Latin America, they see not just U.S. passivity as Venezuela's Hugo Chavez organizes his anti-American "Bolivarian" coalition while deepening military and commercial ties with Iran and Russia. They saw active U.S. support in Honduras for a pro-Chavez would-be dictator seeking unconstitutional powers in defiance of the democratic institutions of that country.

This is not just an America in decline. This is an America in retreat -- accepting, ratifying and declaring its decline, and inviting rising powers to fill the vacuum.

Nor is this retreat by inadvertence. This is retreat by design and, indeed, on principle. It's the perfect fulfillment of Obama's adopted Third World narrative of American misdeeds, disrespect and domination from which he has come to redeem us and the world. Hence his foundational declaration at the U.N. General Assembly last September that "No one nation can or should try to dominate another nation" (guess who's been the dominant nation for the last two decades?) and his dismissal of any "world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another." (NATO? The West?)

Given Obama's policies and principles, Turkey and Brazil are acting rationally. Why not give cover to Ahmadinejad and his nuclear ambitions? As the U.S. retreats in the face of Iran, China, Russia and Venezuela, why not hedge your bets? There's nothing to fear from Obama, and everything to gain by ingratiating yourself with America's rising adversaries. After all, they actually believe in helping one's friends and punishing one's enemies.

Charles is right on as usual. One would think that Americans would be appalled by all of this, but they are overwhelmed by "all this political stuff," and there is the finale of "Lost" that must be attended to, and "Do you think Lindsay is really a lesbian?" It's all just too much and, really, Barack is a cool guy and Krauthammer is a nerd, right?

God help us....

Why do we all sit on our hands and let this Administration/Congress dismantle what's been put into place over the last 200 years? Why??!!

Flaccid is the perfect word to describe Barack Obama and his nasty administration.

BO has taken his own insecurities and arrogance about being liked and transferred them to an entire nation. He wants so desperately to be picked for a spot on the team that he is willing to do anything in order for that to happen, including dissing the country he is supposedly president of. Problem is, he wants onto the wrong team and he is killing America in the process. I believe he could easily be called a traitor

Fed Up Father

Keep talking Mr. Krauthammer! I cannot remember a time when our foreign policy was so weak, disoganized and anti-America. I have to pinch myself everytime some new edict is put out there by the administration. I am fearful and everyone else should be too.

Clinton was flacid on foreign policy too. It was the other thing he wasn't flacid on...

It's the people that make The United States of America what it is, and NOT its temporary presidents. We shall really see what state we are in at the next election. The people need to get off their duffs and lead again and not let go ever again. We can't depend on politicians to lead. If we could, then pollsters would be out of jobs.

Voting is not our only civic duty. All of us have local governments and US and state representatives nearby. Bend their ears. Never let up. they won't need polls then. Get out there and fix your own back yards and the message will start to head up the chain.

God bless The United States of America. And may God help us take vengeance on those who would destroy her.

Thank you Dr. Krauthammer for another factual essay about one of the big steps our current Administration and Congress has/is taking to drag our country toward Socialism and a third world power.

Actually, (1) the election of Pres. Obama came about as a result of the Federal Governments taking over the Education system in this country. This has led to countless numbers of high school graduates who know virtually nothing about American history much less the Constituton and Bill of Rights. Consequently, they know nothing about where America has been or where its headed. And (2) we are being led by a Pres. who has to apologize to every tin horn dictator in the world about America's arrogance and his appointment of a Sec. of State who is imminitely unqualified for the job. But because she has always advocated a one world government under the UN, she fit in perfectly with the Presidents ideological plan to eliminate our Constitutional form of government and replace it with a tyrannical form.

Let's face it, at the rate the Obama administration is spending money. We will be lucky if we can afford to defend ourselves.

Oh sure, when Bush Jr was in the WH Lula and the Turks were just rolling over to have their bellies tickled.

The simple truth is that America's power and prestige, as well as its finances, deteriorated so seriously under President Chimp and his phoney-WMD show that the whole world finds the USA's imperial posturings more ridiculous than frightening.

Now Charles 'Dr Strangelove' Krauthammer tries to run a revival of the old 'kill them anti-Israeli Muslims before they kill us' baloney wtraight out of the Saddam Hussein playbook- but that neocon b.s won't work twice.

Dr Strangelove may say Iran is a potential nuclear threat, but sixteen US intelligence agencies continue to maintain otherwise, as does the International Atomic Energy Agency. If he and his fellow Zionist propagandists know something the experts don't, let him say so with better evidence than all the other scaremongering stunts which fall so flat nowadays. And while he's at it, the good doctor might clue us up about how many nuclear warheads Israel now has-- 200, 300?

Why does a supposedly conservative website give publicity to the ravings of this dual-loyalist advocate of wasteful defense spending, meddling in foreign countries' affairs and hazarding the blood and treasure of Americans?

Abu Nudnik

Lots of Americans are skeptical of Obama's foreign policy without their having dual loyalty.

Nilsson Shmilsson indeed. The reason no one worries about the nuclear capabilities of Israel is that there is no fear that they will lose their minds and start lobbing annhilation into the air. Iran on the other hand is not the least bit shy about telling anyone who will listen what their intentions are in the name of Mohammed or at the behest of the Mahdi living in a wishing well. We wish that all that was necessary was subservience to Arab leaders to appease their grand designs. Since Training Wheels Obama has done his best to do just that, we should now be living in the most peaceful of times with all Muslims responding in kind. However in their world it is a sign of weakness to be treated with scorn and seen as opportunity. Strength they respect beacause that they fear.

Wow, Nilsson at first I thought this guy is pretty smart, but then that was the part where you quoted Dr.K. The rest of your response is the same old blame Bush distortion of fact. When every other sentence involves calling names rather than dealing with opponenet's ideas, you reveal your true purpose. So quit cutting classes and posting and get back to class -- what is it now? your third try at 8th grade?
