The Selective Modesty of Barack Obama

· Friday, July 9, 2010

WASHINGTON -- Remember NASA? It once represented to the world the apogee of American scientific and technological achievement. Here is President Obama's vision of NASA's mission, as explained by administrator Charles Bolden:

"One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science and math and engineering."

Apart from the psychobabble -- farcically turning a space-faring enterprise into a self-esteem enhancer -- what's the sentiment behind this charge? Sure America has put a man on the moon, led the information revolution, won more Nobel Prizes than any other nation by far -- but, on the other hand, a thousand years ago al-Khwarizmi gave us algebra.

Bolden seems quite intent on driving home this message of achievement equivalence -- lauding, for example, Russia's contribution to the space station. Russia? In the 1990s, the Russian space program fell apart, leaving the United States to pick up the slack and the tab for the missing Russian contributions to get the space station built.

For good measure, Bolden added that the U.S. cannot get to Mars without international assistance. Beside the fact that this is not true, contrast this with the elan and self-confidence of President Kennedy's pledge that America would land on the moon within the decade.

There was no finer expression of belief in American exceptionalism than Kennedy's. Obama has a different take. As he said last year in Strasbourg, "I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism." Which of course means: If we're all exceptional, no one is.

Take human rights. After Obama's meeting with the president of Kazakhstan, Mike McFaul of the National Security Council reported that Obama actually explained to the leader of that thuggish kleptocracy that we too are working on perfecting our own democracy.

Nor is this the only example of an implied moral equivalence that diminishes and devalues America. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner reported that in discussions with China about human rights, the U.S. side brought up Arizona's immigration law -- "early and often." As if there is the remotest connection between that and the persecution of dissidents, jailing of opponents, suppression of religion routinely practiced by the Chinese dictatorship.

Nothing new here. In his major addresses, Obama's modesty about his own country has been repeatedly on display as, in one venue after another, he has gratuitously confessed America's alleged failing -- from disrespecting foreigners to having lost its way morally after 9/11.

It's fine to recognize the achievements of others and be non-chauvinistic about one's country. But Obama's modesty is curiously selective. When it comes to himself, modesty is in short supply.

It began with the almost comical self-inflation of his presidential campaign, from the still inexplicable mass rally in Berlin in front of a Prussian victory column to the Greek columns framing him at the Democratic convention. And it carried into his presidency, from his posture of philosopher-king adjudicating between America's sins and the world's to his speeches marked by a spectacularly promiscuous use of the first-person pronoun -- I.

Notice, too, how Obama habitually refers to Cabinet members and other high government officials as "my" -- "my secretary of homeland security," "my national security team," "my ambassador." The more normal -- and respectful -- usage is to say "the," as in "the secretary of state." These are, after all, public officials sworn to serve the nation and the Constitution -- not just the man who appointed them.

It's a stylistic detail, but quite revealing of Obama's exalted view of himself. Not surprising, perhaps, in a man whose major achievement before acceding to the presidency was writing two biographies -- both about himself.

Obama is not the first president with a large streak of narcissism. But the others had equally expansive feelings about their country. Obama's modesty about America would be more understandable if he treated himself with the same reserve. What is odd is to have a president so convinced of his own magnificence -- yet not of his own country's.

As usual, Charles nails it. I am so sick of the smugness of this president and his administration. Can hardly wait for the fall elections. The performance of the whole bunch is embarrassing us before the entire world. Let's make a change we citizens can believe in.

Totally impressed by the exhuberance of his own verbocity; yet totally shallow in the history of our country and the greatness of it's achievements. The guy in the white house is a real feather merchant, yet extremely dangerous!

Under Obama the cabinet members have been relegated to the dust bin of history; they have been replaced by czars who appear to be both advisers and handlers placed by his shadowy backers, the world's money men. Even the Congress has been relegated to a side show maintained mostly to provide an appearance of constitutionality as one of the three branches of government. In truth they have become a group of individuals one could hardly call a body, each individual's purpose is to remain in office and most of their energy is directed to that effort. They only devote enough time from campaigning, they campaign every day of their tenure, to vote Aye to Obama's wishes, plans, schemes, proposals and blusters. Each desires the long career of Robert Byrd, the old Kleagle is universally admired among them, not for any particular accomplishment but because he gamed the system for a longer time than any before him.

Charles' analysis is right on target, as always.

I would only dispute the assumed Islamic origin of algebra, per propaganda-spun history. Islam contributed nothing to science except to take credit for knowledge gained from Dhimmi scholars of conquered cultures and had translated for them. When manuscripts were later translated from Arabic back to their original languages, it perpetuated the myth of Islamic 'science'.

The known facts and circumstantial evidence actually indicate that Al-Khwārizmī was Persian born and most likely a Zoroastrian Dhimmi convert (as usual by humiliation and jizya following Islamic conquests). He worked in Baghdad as a scholar at the "House of Wisdom" established by Caliph al-Ma'mūn, where he studied the sciences and mathematics, which included the translation of Greek and Sanskrit scientific manuscripts (ding ding!).

Obama is extremely impressed with himself and socialism. He has the certainty and "fatal conceit" only available to those who have never actually done anything significant, never learned humility. His first actual life project is transforming America into a socialist welfare state. We can see from the daily headlines the bizarre beliefs, strange actions and massive failures of these people.

I think "Money is the bottom line in this NEW approach to NASA.!!!"

When Hussein announce he was "decommissioning the Space program" that left the question of the huge amounts of money, "already appropriated" for that Agency. Would the money be put back into the "General Fund" to pay off American Debt???? HA HA

Now, we know that the "NASA FUNDING" will be "directed to the muslims, so they won't have their feelings hurt!!!???"

What about my feelings as an American taxpayer??? With the "DEBT" accumulating that will "SHACKLE" posterity for generations to come. Disgracing my generation for allowing such "DEBT" to be incurred, we, now, just "re-distribute the wealth" because we "owe a "debt to muslims"???????" UGH

Who writes the checks in Washington, DC????? Who can "DECOMMISSION" this "OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT", with all of it's "ASSUMED POWER", executive orders, executive appointments, Grants, and "hordes that eat out our substance daily."??????? Is Washington, DC totally lawless and run on caprice??????

Our "Liberty is in Law" NOT lawlessness.

I am particularly grateful for all of the Islamic contributions that kill and mame people all over the globe not the least of which are our brave American soldiers. Muslims want only to subjegate or kill, if necessary, ALL infidels. An infidel is a non-Muslim. So please do not hand me any politically correct BS about Islam being a religion of peace. What CRAP! Osama Obama is working hard to see the invasion from within succeed by sheer numbers.

I couldn't agree more.

However, if I were the President, er, local dictator and I wanted the best and brightest government group to help raise the esteem of any one I too would look at NASA. Just look at all the goodies they've invented over the years and I'm not talking just about space toys.

Of course if you were to look at the appropriate title of US Code I don't believe you would find anything about "One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math; he wanted me to expand our international relationships; and third and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science and math and engineering."

I am truly amazed that Charles Bolden didn't simply resign rather than see NASA thrown to the wolves.

In reference to your statement:

"What is odd is to have a president so convinced of his own magnificence -- yet not of his own country's."

Might not the reason be that this is NOT "his own country"?.

Obama's exhaltation of himself and modesty/putdown toward his fellow countrymen, make his actions all the more horrifying to so many. Let us pray that the majority will discern clearly the threat that we face and apply the brakes/votes firmly in November.

The best confrontation before Election Day is to expose his rationale for what it truly means. Thank you for the part that you play in doing so!

Dave has nailed it. This is NOT "his own country".

Jeff has certainly stirred the pot with "WHICH country is his"?

Dickster has the solution!

Americans, let's take back OUR country!

One of the most important lessons I learned as a child was, there is no "I" in "Team'. As a fifth grader, I thought that if I did most of the work on a joint project, then I should be recognized for it. It was a humiliating life lesson but it became my basic tenet later on in the USN & in the airline industry. Also, I haven't seen any focus on Obama's mispronunciation of "Corpsman" & other words which I cannot recall at this time. It smells of having learned English in a foreign country, much like the German infiltrators in WWll pronouncing Tucson as Tukson.

Obama was NOT born in this country!! Through the Internet, I have received copies of his Original birth certificates, under the name of Barry Soetoe..... His own grandmother has stated that she was present at his birth, in Keenya.

The Hawaii certificate - which is not an actual certificate of birth, but IS only a statement that there IS a birth certificate. Unfortunately, no one has ever been able to find it!!

Hmmmmm...... just one more - but VERY SIGNIFICANT LIE - that this "resident president" tells.

I have 2 questions: Does he EVER tell the truth?"

and DOES HE KNOW ANY HONEST PEOPLE??

BY ALL THAT'S RIGHT AND HOLY, THIS IMPOSTER SHOULD BE IMPEACHED, and the sooner, the better. Of course, Joe Biden is no catch, but at least he's an American, and not a Muslim!!

What you see in the obamanation is exactly what you've got, America. A treasonous self-monument, exactly like Hitler, Stalin and Mao before him, whose only end - your end - is total destruction. To allow it is to deserve it.

Wow. In comparing Obama and his total lack of modesty with Charles Krauthammer's impressive modesty about himself, what with the superlative credentials he comes with, I see a glaring spotlight on the President of this country and the lack of virtues he presents - to friends and enemies of America. What a poor specimen of humanity we are stuck with. As a reader commented, Charles has once again "nailed it".

May God bless your insight, Charles.

Narcisstic and of course we cannot print the word

that usually follows that. I have been voting since

Nixon and have never seen such a pompus, arrogant,

full of himself, incompetant. If Jimmy Carter lives

long enough he will not see himself go down as the

worst President of this century, it will be the lying socialist with his ends justify the means agenda bent on destroying the USA. Unfortunately if

he should pass in office, Blundering Biden will be

the one to succeed him, and if he should pass, well

then we would be favored with Numbskull Nancy, and

who knows what idiot would be the next. Hopefully

Chicago will reclaim their village idiot and we will

not have to either look nor listen to him any more.

I could never understand how bumper stickers could

be put on cars that said, "He's Not MY President"

when Bush was in there. I didn't care for Bush but

didn't have those feelings for Bush. But at least

Bush was competant and not a total banal idiot who

thought America was evil and wanted to shaft the

constitution. And still at least 1/3 think he is

the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well you should be working in the construction trades where

the unemployment is 24% not 9%, and there is no hope

on the horizon for any quick recovery in 2011 or 2012. Tell him to take a drive on a country road

and see all the for sale signs on cars and houses

and everything else out here. Maybe we need to see

some areas with "OBAMAVILLE" on the shantys.

Last time I checked the government was set in place to help govern the laws of this nation and to protect it's citzens. This president is bad news for this country and he must be replaced at the next opportunity. I for one will vote for smaller goverment, lower taxes, balance budgets, truth not lies, and everything else that this president seems to have issues with.

Krauthammer is an adult among children. Congress is acting like unleashed kids in a candy store.
