Sacrilege at Ground Zero

· Friday, August 13, 2010

WASHINGTON -- A place is made sacred by a widespread belief that it was visited by the miraculous or the transcendent (Lourdes, the Temple Mount), by the presence there once of great nobility and sacrifice (Gettysburg), or by the blood of martyrs and the indescribable suffering of the innocent (Auschwitz).

When we speak of Ground Zero as hallowed ground, what we mean is that it belongs to those who suffered and died there -- and that such ownership obliges us, the living, to preserve the dignity and memory of the place, never allowing it to be forgotten, trivialized or misappropriated.

That's why Disney's early '90s proposal to build an American history theme park near Manassas Battlefield was defeated by a broad coalition fearing vulgarization of the Civil War (and wiser than me; at the time I obtusely saw little harm in the venture). It's why the commercial viewing tower built right on the border of Gettysburg was taken down by the Park Service. It's why while no one objects to Japanese cultural centers, the idea of putting one up at Pearl Harbor would be offensive.

And why Pope John Paul II ordered the Carmelite nuns to leave the convent they had established at Auschwitz. He was in no way devaluing their heartfelt mission to pray for the souls of the dead. He was teaching them a lesson in respect: This is not your place, it belongs to others. However pure your voice, better to let silence reign.

Even New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who denounced opponents of the proposed 15-story mosque and Islamic center near Ground Zero as tramplers on religious freedom, asked the mosque organizers "to show some special sensitivity to the situation." Yet, as columnist Rich Lowry pointedly noted, the government has no business telling churches how to conduct their business, shape their message, or show "special sensitivity" to anyone about anything. Bloomberg was thereby inadvertently conceding the claim of those he excoriates for opposing the mosque, namely, that Ground Zero is indeed unlike any other place and therefore unique criteria govern what can be done there.

Bloomberg's implication is clear: If the proposed mosque were controlled by "insensitive" Islamist radicals either excusing or celebrating 9/11, he would not support its construction.

But then, why not? By the mayor's own expansive view of religious freedom, by what right do we dictate the message of any mosque? Moreover, as a practical matter, there's no guarantee this couldn't happen in the future. Religious institutions in this country are autonomous. Who is to say that the mosque won't one day hire an Anwar al-Aulaqi -- spiritual mentor to the Fort Hood shooter and the Christmas Day bomber, and one-time imam at the Virginia mosque attended by two of the 9/11 terrorists?

An Aulaqi preaching in Virginia is a security problem. An Aulaqi preaching at Ground Zero is a sacrilege.

Location matters. Especially this location. Ground Zero is the site of the greatest mass murder in American history -- perpetrated by Muslims of a particular Islamist orthodoxy in whose cause they died and in whose name they killed.

Of course that strain represents only a minority of Muslims. Islam is no more intrinsically Islamist than present-day Germany is Nazi -- yet despite contemporary Germany's innocence, no German of good will would even think of proposing a German cultural center at, say, Treblinka.

Which makes you wonder about the good will behind Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf's proposal. This is a man who has called U.S. policy "an accessory to the crime" of 9/11 and, when recently asked whether Hamas is a terrorist organization, replied, "I'm not a politician. ... The issue of terrorism is a very complex question."

America is a free country where you can build whatever you want -- but not anywhere. That's why we have zoning laws. No liquor store near a school, no strip malls where they offend local sensibilities, and, if your house doesn't meet community architectural codes, you cannot build at all.

These restrictions are for reasons of aesthetics. Others are for more profound reasons of common decency and respect for the sacred. No commercial tower over Gettysburg, no convent at Auschwitz -- and no mosque at Ground Zero.

Build it anywhere but there.

The governor of New York offered to help find land to build the mosque elsewhere. A mosque really seeking to build bridges, Rauf's ostensible hope for the structure, would accept the offer.

I agree 100%; it is a sacrilege. If their intentions were truly honorable, they would be happy with any other location. This particular location was chosen on purpose, it was a deal negotiated by foolish greedy Americans, and it will be a shrine to American gullibility for many years.

The proposal was worded to appear as a peaceful and unifying gesture, while they are laughing behind our backs, which will turn to more hatred in our faces.

Why don't they just put a plane on top of the building when they're done? That would probably be okay with the deal makers too.

If Imam Abdul Rauf is so interested in building bridges, why is he not recommending a multi-cultural center, to include Jews, Christians, etc?

Only fools believe that locating a mosque at Ground Zero is a religious right. It is of course a political statement - like all terrorist statements. They use mosques to hide in and human shields to protect themselves from justice. Wonder what they'll hide in this one? Can anyone spell WMD?

Juan Williams is on FOX right this second claiming that "only Conservatives are opposing" this mosque. He seems ignorant of polls that consistently show 80% and more of Americans strongly opposed to building a mosque near Ground Zero. He claims that while Americans don't like the idea, they know in their hearts Muslims can build wherever they want in this country. Mr Williams never gets around to explaining how he knows what's in the hearts of Americans.

His claim is absurd. If only Conservatives object to this outrage, then that must mean 80-90% of Americans are Conservatives, a revelation that not only surprises me but would seem to spell the destruction of Liberalism in America. One can wish.

The level of dishonesty in this whole debate shows an underlying agenda in the Left. They don't care at all about truth, reality, justice or anything else -- as long as they get to shove yet another outrage down the throats of normal Americans. We know this by observing how Liberals react when different groups are offended by similar events.

Just as the Left ardently believes America is always wrong, so too they are certain Christianity is always wrong. Likewise, as our enemies are always either our victims or at least firmly in the right, Islam is never the aggressor, and is never wrong.

The Left reveals its radical ideology once again to Americans who scratch their heads and wonder how anybody could possibly hold these nutty positions. This time, though, Americans will not simply let the Left have its way rather than argue. This time, we will stand our ground and fight for what's right.

Because Ground Zero is sacred. And it's past time to teach the Left that just because THEY hold nothing sacred doesn't matter to the vast majority of people who do.

Charles has it right. I've never been to New York, I don't like big cities, I have no plans to visit NY. But America was attacked on 9/11 not just NY. Was it just Hawaii that was attacked on Dec.7th 1941? I'm appalled and embarrassed by our gutless President(at a Ramadan dinner no less!) and all others who don't see the true intent of this Mosque. It is no more or less a victory flag for Jihadists and watch for the dancing in the Arab street when this thing opens up and pictures circulate! Our elected leaders are cowards! If I lived in New York I would make it part of my life to watch and listen to what happens in that Mosque! With a video camera.

Juan Williams is totally wrong and is on every subject that comes to mind.

I would have to say that he fits as so many leftists do into the "LIBTARD" category.

His ignorance and those who have never read the Qur'An and the SHARIAH Law, and the real purpose of Islam, merely shows how completely uniformed and ignorant we Americans can be.

Charles as usual right on target. Thank you.

Agreed. Thank you for your voice of sanity. One question - Did the Japanese build a temple at Pearl Harbor? The answer is obvious, as is the reason.

Regular viewer on Fox News.

Does anyone ever wonder why it is taking so long to build anything at ground zero itself? Could it be that Obama's Islamic supporters want to build their mosque there and want the foundation to be able to support what they have in mind?

It is time for Obama to pay for the trouble he has caused. Impeach him now before he does any more damage.

The Muslim religion, in general, is not compatible with a democratic republic. Even though we espouse the principles of free speech and religion, permitting a mosque in sight of ground zero is more than a sacrilege, it is knowingly aiding and abetting the enemy. Treason of the highest order.

Thanks Charles, as usual you shine the real light on the issue. Not enough good people see all the surrounding facts that need to be part of the decision. I will send this article on to many who don't think far enough ahead before they open their mouths. They are all around us, and they vote. Keep the faith people, and keep pushing your friends and family to wake up in time. The time in now.

I think they should build the mosque. I also think there should be a gift shop across the street where you can buy Muhammad t-shirts and posters and statues and they could have a cardboard cutout of Muhammad and you could even get your pic taken with the prophet!

Amen. For what other motive would such a project be pressed against such public and widespread opposition except for the express purpose of offending and stirring up hatred? Why would representatives of a religion that wants the world to believe it is based on love be so adamant about building in a location that clearly leads to hateful sentiments?

If the islamic political system of hate really cared about tolerence, how they are viewed by the rest of the world, etc. they would not purposely do what they are trying to do!

is there a 15 story mosque anywhere in the world?

I feel that the ultimate reason for the proposed mosque is to loudly proclaim "VICTORY" over the United States. The Islamists, i.e., Muslims, want to add another jewel to their collection - like they did in Mecca, Istanbul, etc. Everywhere there is a mosque, it was built over the objections of people they subjugated and forced into their "faith". New York is no different. They won an important battle on 9-11-01, and now the Muslims want to rub our collective face in it.

Please don't let them -- stop the mosque as soon as possible.

It is a sad day in our history when our president, and other elected officials, cow-tow to save their own political skins. If we as a nation allow ourselves to be divided, as it appears to be happening, then we will loose for ever that freedom that so many have died for. Our country has defended the rights of freedom for so many throughout the world and yet we are being led down a primrose path to self destruction tethered by a few self centered individuals who have no clue of, or respect for, our constitution and the many who gave their lives in support of it.

Wake up America and smell the coffee! If we loose our respect for the sacred hallowed grounds then we have succumbed to the whims and wills of fanatics.

Let us pause and give thanks to Obama!

Yes, what other President would continue to shoot himself repeadedly, especially when his party desperately needs him?

Those of us who dearly love this country should salute the continued self destructive efforts of this ill informed, ill advised, ill thinking socialistic President.

Yes, the very one that so many ill advised, ill thinking, socialistic minded Americans elected to the highest office in the land. He is quickly teaching even those that voted him into office that he IS NOT the answer, nor does he pocess constructive answers to the many problems facing our great nation.

Rejoice, he is doing what the Repulicans, Independents and Tea Party were unable to collectively accomplish until now.

Thank you Mr President...keep building that one way road away from America's core values, the very fabric that makes us the greatest nation on earth. Keep doing what you are so good at, divide and conquer in reverse style.....keep destroying yourself and those that "Try" to stand beside you... this is the best thing you could do for our country at this time.

Once you have traveled so far, far away from our country and have taken so many Liberals with you, we will welcome you all back after the elections....just not as our leaders.

BTW: this is my personal first blog of any kind in my life and I am 62....some things just take time!

I don't deny that this fiasco is despicable. Yes, building a mosque at that location is a tasteless - and likely a politically-motivated - act. The owners of the property should have considered this aspect of the decision before they allowed the use of that property for the mosque's purposes, and it is a shameful blight on their reputations that they didn't. Personally, I am opposed to the mosque being built there. Professionally, however, I am forced to admit that this is a country of both religious freedom AND the rule of law - in defense of which principles which this publication has purported to stand above all else. As such, one cannot deny that the owners of the property have the right to do as they wish with their land, so long as it complies with the law, and that the mosque's owners have the right to enter into a contract to lease or purchase the property and to build whatever they wish on it, again, so long as it is in compliance with the law and building codes. It seems the author of this article suggests that an exception be made in this case; that the building codes be altered, or some such regulation implemented to forbid the "sacrilege" - already commenced - of having this mosque imposed upon this hallowed ground. I ask, in all sincerity and with the greatest possible respect to those who died on that fateful day almost nine years ago: would it not be a greater detriment to the historically and uniquely American cause of freedom and the rule of law, for us to discard our principles through the imposition of an ex post facto law, than for us to concede the clear rights of the builders of this mosque and move on with our lives and our efforts to restore our once-great republic? Am I offended by the mosque's location? Yes, but I am more offended by Americans' hasty willingness to trample their own Constitution and to dispense with their own sacred principles in an effort to oppose what amounts to nothing more than a single fly-speck on our political radar. Please consider the broader ramifications of what you are proposing, friends, and make such considerations with our principles in mind. We would not want to win the battle (over this single mosque) at the great cost of losing the war (the struggle to restore our constitutional republic). The rules we make are a double edged sword: when we are strong and many, they will surely work in our favor to slay our enemies, but when we are few and vulnerable, they will just as surely be used to cut us to pieces. Be ware the precedent you set, for it will be turned against you, also.

I am a retired military officer, grew up in NYC it is a shame to even think that a Mosque will be build where over 3000 of out citizen were killed by terrorist and I am not in any way hesitate to use the word terrorist. Let these people build a Mosque some place else but in New York. Let us build a monument of our great nation in their country and see what they have to say. A very dissappointed retired Military Officer and proud US citizen.
