Judaism's Sexual Revolution: God's Plan for Sex
· Friday, February 3, 2012
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. On today's BreakPoint, you'll learn why we can't let that happen with marriage.
So often we hear that allowing two men or two women to marry will not hurt anyone, and certainly not "straight" people. Well, the truth is, we already know what happens when a society promotes sexual license and devalues marriage. We just have to look at history.
Way back before anyone was talking about so-called "gay marriage," radio talk show host and Jewish theologian Dennis Prager wrote a fascinating article called -- get ready for this -- "Judaism's Sexual Revolution: Why Judaism Rejected Homosexuality."
Before the Jews were placed in the Ancient Near East, the pagan world was already a sexual free-for-all that debased women, boys, and religion itself in the service of male lust. Every aspect of life was sexualized. The pagan gods engaged in no-holds-barred sex, and so did the people. Homosexuality had almost unquestioned acceptance in the ancient world.
But the key issue wasn't gender, it was power. Prager quotes Brown University philosopher Martha Nussbaum, who wrote, "The central distinction in [ancient] sexual morality was … between active and passive roles." Because boys and women were on the receiving end of sexual activity, they were "very often treated interchangeably as [simple] objects of [male] desire."
Not surprisingly, then, women were relegated to the sidelines, important for giving birth and running the home, but not important as real and equal partners to men, who had other sexual options -- with boys and other men.
That's why Judaism's claim that God created sex only for a man and a woman in marriage was so revolutionary -- and despised by pagans ancient and modern pagans I might add as well. As Genesis said, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed."
Prager writes, "This revolution forced the sexual genie into the marital bottle. It ensured that sex no longer dominated society, heightened male-female love and sexuality (and thereby almost alone created the possibility of love and eroticism within marriage), and began the arduous task of elevating the status of women." No wonder, Prager notes, that the "improvement of the condition of women has only occurred in Western civilization," which historically has been the "least tolerant of homosexuality."
Of course, I should note, that it was the Apostle Paul who further carried this Jewish sexual revolution throughout the ancient world. As Sarah Ruden wrote about in her recent book Paul Among the Peoples, predatory homosexuality was common in Rome and Greece; women and children were just property.
Through Paul, however, Christianity ensured that Western Civilization promoted sex within the confines of marriage between one man and one woman, and placed off limits the sexual abuse of boys and slaves.
The point is simply this: God instituted marriage for the good of man (restraining and channeling his sexuality), for the protection and dignity of woman, and the flourishing of human society.
Western civilization, the greatest ever, took this to heart, but forgets it now at its own peril.

Aberant behavior and the left, birds of a feather, flock together. I am not politically correct, and I think those who champion sick and delusional aberant behavior should be mocked, stocked, and loathed by a Christian society, but the left would make them heros. Imoral and unconstituional, anti-American and loathsome, Democrats shouldn't be allowed to live, but they indoctrinate and controll the media, education, and are killing this country.

Aberant behavior and the left, birds of a feather flocking together. The marxist statist filth seems to like anything immoral and strange, and wants to impose their lack of morals on the rest of us. What disgusting absurd logic, they cannot fathom the depths of their own depravity. I am not politically correct, and I think the sick and perverted left, with their homo loving agenda, are actively destroying America. Vote Democrat for the destruction of America.

For marriage between one man and one women to become truly revolutionary, will require something much greater that what's on offer as moral teaching from either Jewish or Christian traditions. In fact Shakespeare got it just right when he wrote his poem Venus and Adonis:
Call it not love for Love to heaven is fled
Since sweating lust on earth usurped His name.
Under whose simple semblance man has fed,
upon fresh beauty blotting it with blame,
which the hot tyrant stains and soon bereaves
as caterpillars do the tender leaves.
Love comforteth like sunshine after rain,
while lusts effect is tempest after sun.
Love's gentle spring doth always fresh remain,
lust's winter comes ere summer half be done.
Love surfeits not, lust like a glutton dies,
Love is all truth, lust full of forged lies.
Now that's revolutionary. It just requires a small correction to human nature to realize such ends! Easier done than said! http://www.energon.org.uk

There's a broader and entirely scientific argument by the way that requires nothing but an appeal to the meaning of the word "nature." Look it up in a good etymological dictionary:
"c.1300, "essential qualities, innate disposition," also "creative power in the material world," from O.Fr. nature, from L. natura "course of things, natural character, the universe," lit. "birth," from natus "born," pp. of nasci "to be born," from PIE *gene- "to give birth, beget" (see genus)."
NB: "lit. "birth," from natus "born," pp. of nasci "to be born..."
ie: the means by which living things maintain their existence after the death of its individual members.

It seems that wherever the forces of evil raise their ugly heads it is the family unit which takes the hit. If the family unit can be disrupted, so will society be nonefectual. The good news is that evil cannot prevail against the church of Christ, and the Church is growing and spreading throughout the world. Even the tribal people of Popua New Guinea are learning about "love and respect."

ya know I could give a rats ass who sleeps with who,it's all the "hater" and "homophobe" labels they pass out simply because I don't agree with their choices and the militant LBGT agenda targeting children and anybody that might not think their behavior is all that. It's weird how they refuse to grant the same freedom to others they seem to have such a violent affinity for.Oh,yea-forget trying to talk to them about the whole issue-impossible to get past the emotional drivel of "it's not a choice" blah, blah, blah.Even after I read the definition of what a choice is -still won't accept it-pure delusion

Prager's analysis equating tolerance of homosexuality with abuse of boys and women is absurd. I don't know anyone who supports equal rights for homosexuals who does not also support equal rights for women. I don't know anyone except for a few freaks (not liberal or conservative) who supports sexual abuse of children.
On the other hands, many people who are intolerant of homosexuals are also weak supporters or non-supporters of women's rights, particular the right to complete control over their own body.
Indeed, women's rights developed DESPITE the Western World's patriarchal society not as a result of it. For 1800+ years of "Western Society" enlightened by Judeo-Christian principles women were at best second class citizens and at worse chattel. Even today, women are relegated to second-class status in the Catholic Church.
The whole premise of this article is fanciful and ahistorical.

A recent survey (paid for with your taxes) found the following:
Conservatives have less sex and less sex partners, but are more satisfied with their sex lives.
Democrats have more sex with more partners, but are less satisfied with their sex lives.
The conclusion was that Conservatives are happier people because they have learned to be happy with what they have.
Democrats are unhappy people because they are never satisfied with what they have, and are always looking for somebody else to screw.

Well Pete, that would be "fewer" sex partners not "less" partners, but then obvious solution would be to have no sex partners and then you can be totally enthralled.

@ Jeffery W-
You really missed the point.
Lets compare how western women are treated vs. ... hmmm...say muslim women!
Let me be just a tad more clear - I'd rather be dead than be a women under Taliban control.
One more point - marriage is btw. one man and one women - period.
You want some kind of 'union'? - go ahead, go to hell.
Next thing the gays will be wanting to marry their pets -that will be special....

I wish I could get my adult children to read this essay. They have been so thoroughly brainwashed by our culture and the schools they have attended that they believe wholeheartedly that homosexuality is ok - that it is a condition homosexuals are born with instead of a choice, that living outside the authority of God is ok - especially where it concerns marriage, that the Islamic fanatics with their insistence of "convert or die" is just another religion that is to be accepted.
I believe the way our culture has degraded at such a rapid pace in the past few decades is the foreshadow of the last days and the tribulation that is foretold in the Bible.

Mr. Wilens:
Dennis Prager's analysis is not ahistorical. See also David Gress's "From Plato to NATO" to see who the earliest gentile converts were to Christianity: Roman, aristocratic women who no longer were chattel as they were now considered, along with their husbands, "joint heirs" of God's grace. Also, their husbands no longer held moral authority to force them into abortions (usually of girls). This was a massive revolution in Roman society, over and against its enculturated paganism and attendant sexual objectification. Simply put, it seems you have been reading history to serve a pagan, liberal pretext rather than uncover objective reality. Gress's book is one of many that can be brought to the table, if you are interested in looking. See also "Kingdoms in Conflict" by Colson, for starters.

You CAN get your children to read this essay. Just be a parent.
One of the reasons our society is collapsing is that parents have abdicated their parental responsibilities as being "too hard". Parents want to blame our culture, our schools and our goverment for brainwashing their children. On the contrary, it's parents who allow their children to be brainwashed that are the problem.

I am laughing as I write this...my children are adults and while I can certainly send it to them, they would just as certainly delete it unread. Thanks though.

Very odd and more than a little ironic that you guys would criticize the Muslims. It is not suprising that they treat women poorly and they also treat homosexuals very poorly as well. They would certainly agree with fundamentalist Christians and Jews on the maltreatment of both.
Regardless of what influence early Christianity might have had, there is no way to characterize 1,000+ years of the Catholic Church (and for the most part its Protestant offshoots) as anything else but repressive toward women and gays.
Only liberalization of these rigid religious orders led to increased rights for women and (much to your chagrin) homosexuals.
So here we are today, determined not to let the fundamentalists (those soldiers of God) control our society. I hate to tell you this, but homosexuality "is" okay from a moral perspective as long as it involves two consenting adults. It may be against your religious beliefs or even offend you, but that does not make it immoral.
Morality is not religion, which differs from culture to culture. Christian Scientists believe it would be proper to deny a blood transfusion that is medically necessary but I beleive that is immoral using objective standards of harm to others. Denying another person necessary medical treatment because of your own relgious belief is harmful.
The point is simplistic arguments based on "The Bible says X is wrong so it is immoral" worked fine in ancient days before something called the Age of Reason. People are still doing this of course, but mostly in primitive cultures like, well like the Muslim societies you criticize so much.

Jesus had more to do with elevating women then the Catholic church. Religion just continued with the same prejudices as previous cultural practices dictated. In the west, it was realized that to keep women down was not worth the negative costs for men, women and children. I surely hope Muslim society one day realizes the horrible costs they are bearing due to the slave mentality forced upon the women.
