Bohemian Grove -- Men Only

· Sunday, July 10, 2011

"Weaving Spiders Come Not Here" is the motto of San Francisco's Bohemian Club. The motto is supposed to represent the club's edict against doing business during its annual Bohemian Grove retreat, which commences on Thursday on 2,700 acres, 75 miles north of the city. As club spokesman and member Sam Singer explained, "It's a group of gentlemen who are really genuinely interested in arts, theater, jazz and rock 'n' roll." The retreat gives members a chance to "get away from work. It's forbidden to talk about or solicit business at the club or grove."

The "weaving spiders" motto also provides cover for a club that discriminates against women.

Thus, in the Bay Area, good liberals and civil libertarians, who would not dream of joining a club that refuses to admit blacks or Jews, raise their glasses in a club that discriminates against women.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul, is a member. Vaughn Walker, the former federal judge who overturned California's same-sex marriage law, is a member. MSNBC anchor Chris Matthews is a member.

Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart is a member. Ditto band member Bob Weir. There are more big names on the right, starting with former President George H.W. Bush, former Gov. Pete Wilson and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Business titans have long bankrolled the retreats. A roster of 2010 members released by norcaltruth.org -- the club does not release its membership -- includes a couple of Rockefellers and the ubiquitous Koch brothers. Hence conspiracy theories about sinister deals cut amid the redwoods.

Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is a member. William R. Hearst III, trustee of the Hearst Corp., which writes my paycheck, has been a member. I have friends who are members.

John McCain has addressed the group. Ditto Francis Ford Coppola. Like good Democrats, Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton have avoided Bohemia. "When I first started and they acquired my services, it was to help handle protests at the grove and the City Club," Singer noted. "Over the years, it's gone from a thousand people to literally one person."

That one person is Brian Romanoff of norcaltruth.org, and he told me he doesn't go there to "protest" so much as to "reach out and inform the members" as to why they should make retreat policy seminars -- on Afghanistan or nuclear power -- public.

He thinks some members are "probably guilty" of war crimes. He doesn't reach out to them. "I don't really want to get to know Henry Kissinger."

Sonoma State sociology professor Peter Phillips attended the retreat in 1994. The club was the subject of his doctoral dissertation. He told me that he met a lot of "ordinary rich guys" and "some very important people." Some men kept coming back to the same camps every year to discuss intimate issues -- their prostates, wives -- in an atmosphere analogous to a men's group.

Phillips also saw and heard a lot of networking. "They're very clearly talking politics and business constantly." No weaving spiders? "I proved the opposite, quite clearly. I heard conversations about business. 'If GE comes in on the deal, we can get the Japanese to join' -- three men walking down a trail together."

Note to Mr. Hearst: I believe in the right to free association. I do not want the government to encroach on men's right to socialize among themselves, or force men to share gyms, bathrooms and poker games with women and shutter fraternities.

The Bohemian Club has a right to exist. California courts have upheld the club's right to exclude female members, but ordered it to hire female staff at the club and at the grove's food facilities.

I also believe in free speech, but that doesn't mean I would say things I believe others have the right to say. I do not believe the Bohemian Club is a social/theater/music club -- although I believe the former member who told me that's what the club's emphasis used to be.

Now I buy Phillips' summation -- that the retreat presents powerful "men celebrating their male eliteness, which is kind of how the world works."

The male-only bastion's discriminatory polices hurt women trying to compete in business and politics -- and everyone in politics knows it.

No matter how hard they try, they can never be a man, and it really is shame that they cannot find happiness in the live God gave them.

Are you really trying to tell us that powerful women, and thier best friends, never have a "get together" to talk about weddding dresses, shoes, jewelry, and other women-- and that the subject of business, Tv deals, and politics never comes up?

I have no interest in the Bohemian or the Hen Party, but I am pretty sure this is gonna be a losing battle for you Debra.

Closet liberal or feminist, I assume your stories come out on Sunday because of the lack of competion. The few times I`ve read your article they have rubbed the wrong way, I wonder why your on the PP, and not a liberal post.

"... to discuss intimate issues -- their prostates, wives...". Your penis envy is extremely juvenile, Debra. Here's a men's club, for men, who want to act and be men, around other men, without interference from meddling females, and you and those like you throw a hissy fit. You are free to establish your own club for females (you can can call it, say, the "Wet Hen Society", how about that, Debbie?), and I can guarantee you that any man who calls himself a man will stand clear of the cackling. And you and your fellow wet hens can talk all you want about your vaginas and your stretch marks. But, please, please, wait until you've passed by "...that time of the month..." before writing a column for the Patriot Post. Mr. Alexander, be on notice, between Debra and Peggy, I am at "neurotic female sensory overload". You should make sure that they take their meds before they write any more columns for your Post. "The Patriot Post is a highly acclaimed advocate of Essential Liberty, the restoration of constitutional limits on government and the judiciary, and the promotion of free enterprise, national defense and traditional American values". So which category does Debra's column fall into; "traditional American values"???

Oh puhleese...who cares. Why is it that females have to always poke their noses into everything? Would we want men intruding into our spa time? Uh, no. Does business get discussed in women only venues. Uh, yes...all the time. Find something else to b!tch about Debra, this is just too boring.

SULLY - your post is every bit as insulting as Debra's column. Try to rise above the fray. Your post is indicative of the reason women get so bent out of shape about crap like what is being written about.

SULLY

veritaseequitas - You're absolutely right about rising above the fray and taking the moral high ground: after all, we need to act like adults while the majority are acting like spoiled brats (like Debra). But look what rising above the fray has got us for the last 40-50 years: rabid and rampant liberalism. Sometimes you have to get into the mud and get dirty to fight these people. I will concede to your point 99% of the time, but not this time. Thanks for your feedback.

Any woman who truly believes that by not being in the Bohemian Club hurts her ability to compete in business and politics has no business being in business or politics. Any woman who is sufficiently savvy and powerful enough to hold her own and achieve her rightful place at the top of our society doesn't need the Bohemian Club as a gateway, crutch, badge or trophy.

Anyone who believes that any particular association or group has so much power that whoever is not invited is thus unfairly deprived of its alleged power and influence has a severe case of ignorance, jealousy and insecurity. This wrongheaded conviction is simple another flavor of class warfare, in which Saunders is a proven devotee and practitioner.

In America, we are FREE to form our associations, friendships and alliances. Our personal success is based on our own accomplishments and achievements, NOT on who our associates are. The men in the Bohemian Club are there because they have achieved greatly on their own FIRST, NOT because they subsequently became members.

This deliberate confusion between personal accomplishment vs. association allows liberals and socialists to focus on the association among members of their opposition and demonize it, just as Saunders is doing here. Saunders plays directly to the ignorance, jealousy and insecurity of people who do not understand what it takes to accomplish and achieve great things in this country, exactly as her fellow liberals and socialists incessantly do.

We Americans do not need to be manipulated into opposing groups that are pitted against each other because one group has worked hard to achieve success, and the other group is egged on to despise them instead of encouraged to work similarly hard towards success themselves. This is just another class warfare tactic that is as old as Aesop's grasshoppers and ants, and just as despicable and anti-American.

Saunders should be ashamed of herself for joining her fellow liberals in sustaining class warfare, and should try achieving success on her own that does not involve a public display of her ignorance, jealousy and insecurity.

Mr.Bones.

Debbie, honey, sweety, chickie, baby. If you haven't figured it out yet "Men Really Don't Care" And why is that? Well it's because many of us.[neanderthal men] Realize far to many women are trading down from the privledge they once had to a lower level. You want to do it all! Knock you panties of sister. But take the time to look back 50,60 years at what you think you've gained. And what you've actually lost. You say you want to be treated like a man.And you can do the same work as your male counter part Bull Crap!!! Oh that's Right! You want to be treated the same only it has to be a little different. Why!Because you are females. All the complaining from so called feminists a real women would never do.I've heard all about the so called rights men have and women don't. Well you have them. It's called the United States Constitution. And The Bill of Rights.Only it's been so bastardized through the years just to keep a small group of bitchy females and bitchy feminized males quiet. You should take some time and read why many of these laws and regulations were passed. You would see the inane ignorance and stupidy behind there passage. But this is the new-amerika.You've come along way baby.So grab a brew, light up a marlboro, and enjoy your fall down lifes Rat-Hole-Alice.The reason you were treated differently than a man is. Because! You Are Different! or hadn't you noticed. And i'm not speaking of physical differences. So the next time you put on a pair of jeans.Ask your self. Why do womens jeans have a zipper in front. Not on the side like they used to? What is it's practical purpose. Then you may gain some insight as to why men don't want to work side by side with the female of our spieces. At a job where he's expected to cover for her. Oh and Debra. It works the other way round too.So do what you ladies excel at.And leave us the hell alone. After a 100 or so years we're not the ones who've been screwing you. It's been your fellow sisters and government flacks you vote for.The saddest part,is they haven't even had the good manners to at least give you a kiss. But that's a progressive or liberal for you. They're all about screwing.Semper Paratus.

Mr. Alexander: I'm becoming very disappointed in you. Why do you allow such frumpy, frustrated females to contribute to your Post? Why are you allowing these rabid liberals dictate the agenda? There are so many other subjects of substance that need to be discussed that Debra's column makes a mockery of.

I've said my piece. I'm done now. For sure, I've wasted way too many minutes addressing this nonsense.

Sully maybe Mr. Alexander is an equal opportunity employer.Or maybe it's about knowing who and what the enemies of freedom and liberty are up to.As you can see by the number of responses there's little intrest in this article. As only a few have taken miss debbie to the woodshed.Semper Paratus.

"The male-only bastion's discriminatory polices hurt women trying to compete in business and politics -- and everyone in politics knows it."

Jeez Saunders--how did you get published here? Do you really believe this statement---do you think Palin, Clinton, Bachman or any other powerful women give a rat's patootie about this club? I sure as hell don't! Get a life already---you do not represent the opinion of strong women of ANY political stripe!

Bob

I must admit being quite confused upon finishing this article.

It starts out as yet another attempt to stretch the elastic term that is "discrimination" but then abruptly segues into the "unfair" privileges and cloak-and-dagger shenanigans of the power elite.

What exactly is the point (or gripe) here...that a very small number of elite individuals conspire in private clubs, or that they do not practice an EEO policy while doing so?

Does Debra Saunders support my right to work out at Curves if it's the most convenient gym for me?

For some reason I think not...

Thank you Merry.Only one observation. You put Mrs.Clinton in with Mrs.Palin and Mrs.Bachman.Mrs.Palin and Mrs. Bachman got to their status on their own.I'm sure their husbands did support them and may have even help them in their quest for public office. But Mrs. Clinton got to where she is,mostly because her husband was a governor and a president. I don't think there's any comparison between the three women. Semper Paratus.

This is too stupid to warrant a reasoned response. I could go on for pages about the mythical "glass ceiling" above the heads of women and about the very real "glass floor" they enjoy. I could talk about different life choices that most women make that lead to different outcomes that have nothing to do with discrimination. I could even go on about a spoiled, wealthy, liberal feminist named Debra Saunders having a forum to spew her irrational nonsense here at the Patriot Post. But my patience with feminism has ended.

Let's try this instead, "Debra, be a doll make me a sandwich. Think you can handle that? That's a good girl."

This column is a template that has been used so many times since 1965 that any of us could write it. It's appeared in Miniature Schnauzer Enthusiast.

Either you believe in free association or you do not. Debra does, except when it annoys her, or gives some perception of advantage to men. As noted by others, similar examples of women do not fire up these presses.

Enough. Drop it. You are wrong, and self-centered, and unfair, and vocal in your unfairness. Mind your own business.

Wow...for a second here I thought I was reading a WND piece.

I fully expect a piece like this from the same folks that steal t-shirt ideas then market them (since retracted from sales). But to find this type of story here....wow.

If you don't like being a woman, change it. I hear some states will pay for it. WND could probably help you find that information.

Wow.

The Bohemian Club should meet at Augusta National Country Club. That would REALLY put gasoline on the feminists' fire.

Look: it's called freedom of association, it's protected by the Constitution and everything, and as the Bohemian Club receives no government funding of any description, there's no "civil rights" issue.

Women may not like it or they may be offended by it, but neither is a sound basis for public policy.

There are literally hundreds of women-only groups, dozens of women-only universities, and so on. Oh, wait: these are a reaction to male oppression/domination, so that makes it okay?

Don't think so, ladies. Find something else to complain about.

Debra, try another career. I go to the gym and there is a ladies-only workout room with frosted glass doors RIGHT OUTSIDE THE MEN'S LOCKER ROOM! How many women work out in there? ZERO! Where do they work out? Between me and the mirror I was using, with their privates thrust up in my married face. (yes, this happens) This is the image I have of you. Make up your !@#$ mind, women!

If you replace the word 'men' in your article with 'women', 'blacks','mexicans', 'transvestites', 'children', or 'non-christians', ...suddenly it's OK in the U.S. But don't DARE be a white male in this country...it's against the law of bitter old spinster women and lazy racists!

Ted R. Weiland

This is part and parcel that comes with giving women the right to vote. ""Amendment 19 and the women’s vote assisted in neutering America’s men, similar to what occurred in Isaiah 3 when Yahweh removed the men from their capacity as leaders and replaced them with women:

' For, behold, the Lord, YHWH of hosts, doth take away … the mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, the captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them…. As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.' (Isaiah 3:1-4, 12)

"R.J. Rushdoony provided the following commentary on Isaiah 3:

'Without the authority of the family, a society quickly moves into social anarchy. The source of the family’s authority is the father or husband (1 Cor. 11:1-15). The abdication by the father of his authority, or the denial of his authority, leads to the social anarchy described by Isaiah 3:12. Women rule over men; children then gain undue freedom and power and become oppressors of their parents; the emasculated rulers in such a social order lead the people astray and destroy the fabric of society. The end result is social collapse and captivity (Isa. 3:16-26), and a situation of danger and ruin for women, a time of “reproach” or “disgrace,” in which the once independent and feministic women are humbled in their pride and seek the protection and safety of a man…. Isaiah clearly saw the absence of the man’s authority as productive of social chaos.' (Rushdoony, "The Institutes of Biblical Law," pp. 200-01)"

Army Officer

Shawn in NYC,

My wife and I dropped our membership to a gym some years ago because of the sort of thing you're saying: There was a common area for working out and a separate women-only area with duplicate equipment. So the little dears who were too shy to work out in the common area where (HORRORS!) a man might be, got to go to their own area (not many did). Needless to say, there was no men-only room and the women did not pay more for this female-only benefit.

Of course as the gym began to kowtow to their female clientele at the expense of their male clientele, the formerly excellent adult gym slowly turned into a playground for kids while mommy worked out.

If I had a dollar for every time I stood around waiting for some chick to get off a piece of equipment while the female-only equipment sat idle in the next room it would have paid my membership dues.

The final straw was when I went in to use the climbing wall and was turned away because it was women-only time. There was no corresponding men-only time, of course.

When we dropped our membership the special-assistant-for-membership-issues (or whatever) asked us why we were cancelling. I told him I didn't care to subsidize a business that actively discriminated against me based on sex as a matter of policy.

He had been so thoroughly brainwashed by the public school system that he actually did not understand that the policy was sexually discriminatory, since it didn't hurt women.

I believe that periodically the rantings of Ms. Saunders are featured in the PatriotPost as a service to its members.

Without knowing what misinformation or other type of distorted messages are being presented to the masses how would we know where they get their crazy ideas about what constitutes equality?

I have learned, over time, to read her articles with the same level of thought that I may give to a children's story. It may have an interesting angle or semi-coherent thought in it somewhere but overall can not be expected to hold up to any degree of serious discussion on the merits of it as an article for adult consumption.
